Turnout was low. Bristol City Council local election results in full for every ward. Here are the results in full for every ward in Bristol of the local elections held on Thursday, May 2. The votes have now all been counted in the Bristol City Council local elections. The Greens are officially the largest party in the chamber, but fell agonisingly short of an overall majority. The party ended with 34 councillors, two shy of the magic figure of 36 required to be bigger than all the other groups combined. Both Labour and the Liberal Democrats made gains over the Conservatives, but Labour, which ran the council for the last eight years under outgoing mayor Marvin Rees, whose role has been scrapped following a referendum to move to a committee system, ended with a net loss of two councillors, leaving them on 21. The Greens gained an extra 10 seats. The Lib Dems have eight members in the chamber, an increase of three, while the Tories lost half of their 14 seats and now have just seven. Both Knowle Community Party councillors – who defected from the Lib Dems after the 2021 local elections to form their own party – were voted out, including veteran Cllr Gary Hopkins, and were replaced by Greens.

Home Secretary James Cleverly argued Labour’s proposals would “make the UK the asylum capital of the world”. “This half-hearted, poorly thought through, pale imitation of what is already in place, but without the deterrent of Rwanda, will inevitably see numbers go up,” he told the BBC.

Too many “adopt a kind of defensive crouch” instead of taking action, but Britain can choose to make a difference together with its partners, he said. We in Britain and the wider West have agency – the question is if we have the courage to use it – the courage to act,” Lord Cameron said in his address at the National Cyber Security Centre. He said the Government needs to do more to prioritise security than when he was prime minister to bolster resilience against covert foreign influences. Cameron instanced attacks on Britain’s democracy in the UK and referred to a suspected Russian operations in the UK.

Problems with Greens and Labour sharing power on Bristol Council. What a Green-led Bristol City Council will look like The party’s success at the local elections means they are highly likely to run the authority and attempt to deliver their manifesto pledges The Greens are set to run Bristol City Council – so what can we expect that to mean and what policies are likely to be introduced? Cllr Tony Dyer, the man almost certain to be the new leader, has insisted that while the party is open to ideas from the other political groups, the Greens were triumphant thanks to their manifesto, so fulfilling its promises must be their priority. The document is only 14 pages long. Two of these, at the start and end, are photos of their candidates. Another is a contents page, followed by a brief foreword from group leader Cllr Emma Edwards, a role she will retain even if Cllr Dyer is council leader, and there is also a page outlining what Katy Grant, who finished third in the Avon & Somerset police and crime commissioner election, would have done in the role. That leaves nine pages of actual policies and pledges, although one big complication is the fact that the party is two seats short of an overall majority so will have to rely on support from at least one other group to get anything approved. The proposals include a blanket 20mph speed limit, half-price bus travel for young adults, more residents’ parking zones, which would reverse Labour’s policy over the last eight years in power, protections for libraries and council tax benefits, fewer tower blocks, more affordable homes, decarbonisation schemes, active travel, a workplace parking levy and the possibility of a tourist levy, drug consumption rooms and tidal power from the Severn Estuary. Here is what the Greens hope to achieve:

The used electric car timebomb – EVs could become impossible to sell on because battery guarantees won’t last – find out if you are affected Money Mail can today reveal a timebomb looming in the second-hand market for electric vehicles (EVs). [FROM BEHIND PAYWALL] Our investigation found that many EVs could become almost impossible to resell because of their limited battery life. Experts said that the average EV battery guarantee lasts just eight years. After this time, the battery may lose power more quickly and so reduce mileage between charges. Many EVs will lose up to 12 per cent of their charge capacity by six years. Some may lose even more. Yet the cost of replacing an EV battery is astonishingly high, our research found. In some cases, the cost of a replacement battery is as much as £40,000. For certain EVs, the cost of replacing the battery could be ten times the value of the vehicle itself on the second-hand market. That means used EVs have a limited lifespan — which makes them a bigger and bigger risk as the years go by. Research into EV batteries is yet to be conclusive and the second-hand EV market is new, given the first popular EVs were rolled off the production line in 2009. Last night, one motoring expert said customers should be wary of buying a used electric car beyond its warranty (typically eight years), as after that timespan there is no easy way of measuring how much the battery will degrade before it needs replacing. This may mean you end up needing to pay for an expensive new battery. Motor expert Shahzad Sheikh, who runs the YouTube channel Brown Car Guy, said: ‘With a decaying battery, the range will be poor and you may find it becomes increasingly hard to resell the vehicle after eight years. Buyers will know that they’ll only get a small amount of life out of the car so will pay only a small sum, if anything at all.’ This problem is exacerbated by the fact all new cars coming onto the market by 2035 will be electric and motorists will have to get used to paying around £10,000 more than it’s petrol equivalent, for a vehicle which is not built to last as long. Take a new petrol-driven Renault Clio — it costs around £20,000, while its all-electric opposite, the Renault Zoe, costs closer to £30,000. While you can drive a traditional petrol or diesel car for around 200,000 miles over 14 years before the engine needs fixing or replacing, by comparison a new EV is typically guaranteed under a warranty for 100,000 miles over eight years. Weather also plays a part in how long your battery will last and EV batteries operate best at a temperature between 25-45 degrees Celsius. If you live in a place with freezing winter temperatures, then this will slow the chemical reactions in EV batteries, which can also reduce the charge held over time — and therefore lower a car’s overall range. So you are better off charging your EV car inside a garage rather than outside during the cold winter months. Tom Barnard, of EV experts Electrifying.com, advises motorists to buy a second-hand car with a battery still under warranty. This typically covers the first eight years of motoring or 100,000 miles — whichever comes first. He says: ‘If you purchase an EV older than eight years with more miles on the clock then you are taking a gamble on the battery holding out. You cannot just look at the mileage clock as with a traditional car. ‘There is a wide combination of other variables to consider with an electric car battery. ‘Battery degradation might also become a more important consideration in the future — as we try to be more sustainable — and perhaps be included in an MOT. So, our advice for those who might be nervous about battery life is to buy a car that is still covered by warranty.’ Concerns about battery cost are not helped by a lack of transparency within the industry — with prices of a new battery not advertised. Money Mail requested prices directly from Nissan and no definitive answer was given. Purchasing a battery for your second-hand electric vehicle is not an isolated cost either. You must also consider the labour cost of replacing it, says David Smith, a director at car dealer and garage Cleevely Electric Vehicles, in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. ‘As a general rule-of-thumb you might budget £2,000 for a specialist to do the task. Batteries are typically placed flat along the length and breadth of the car just above the floor plate and usually not too difficult to get at. ‘But it is a specialist job, and you also need a full understanding of the wiring and may have to reset the computer on the vehicle to accept a replaced battery. Some firms, such as Tesla, will only allow their own dealerships to do the job.’ And what of the fate of an old EV battery that can no longer be used in a car? They typically fetch £1,500 and can be used for holding energy storage for solar panels, but many fear they will end up in landfill. Now a host of new start-ups are racing against the clock to find a way to recycle car batteries past their prime including JB Straubel, former chief Technical Officer of Tesla, who has launched Redwood Materials. Mr Barnard says: ‘The old batteries have an intrinsic worth because of the valuable metals inside them — and even if they are no longer practical for storing electricity they have a scrap value. ‘It is still a relatively new market and we can expect it to grow more as we move towards a more renewable future.’

This first part describes what we believe is the CIA’s main conduit for influencing the UK left, the anarchist collective Plan C and identifies the organisations it utilises as fronts. The second part will recount how and why we consider these known Plan C fronts to be responsible for the collapse of the Corbyn project, both as an electoral initiative and wider movement. Nearly five years ago, Jeremy Corbyn was defeated in the 2019 General Election. This defeat was preceded by years of sabotage – from both left and right – and catastrophic capitulations from the Labour leadership, most notably over the largely cooked up “antisemitism crisis” scam. Since then, the Corbyn project has collapsed almost completely, and the left has once again split into varying rival factions. Once again, the left can’t be trusted to organise a piss up at a party conference. How did it go so wrong? We believe that we now have enough evidence to support the claim that what became the “Corbyn Project” was tainted from inception. It was never going to succeed because those who set it up in the first place did not want it to succeed, at least with Corbyn as leader and this at least partially explains why the very organisations supposedly established to support Corbyn accepted the terms of debate set by his internal and external enemies. One explanation for this is that many organisations were, formed, from the start by Plan C, a CIA cutout with a paramilitary wing operating in Syria under CIA direction, in the form of activists sent to the middle east as part of their “Rojava Cluster”. Whilst we do not have enough material to identify specific individuals as CIA assets, we believe that the evidence we have demonstrates that: a) Plan C is, as an organisation a CIA asset or cutout/intermediary; b) Plan C played a major role in establishing the organisations that would become known as the Corbyn movement; c) Plan C then used this position to sabotage and destroy “Corbynism” from the inside

AstraZeneca Covid vaccine victims hail withdrawal of jab globally, saying ‘no one else will suffer now’ – as lawyers warn Brits harmed by rare side effect linked to 81 deaths may have run out of time to claim compensation because of three-year cut-off AstraZeneca’s vaccine was once heralded as a ‘triumph for British science’ AstraZeneca’s landmark decision to withdraw its Covid jab worldwide was hailed by victims of an extremely rare but fatal side effect, who said it ‘means no one else will suffer from this awful adverse reaction’. The pharmaceutical titan’s vaccine, once heralded as a ‘triumph for British science’, has come under intense scrutiny in recent months for a very rare complication that causes blood clots and low blood platelet counts. It has been linked to 81 deaths in the UK as well as hundreds of serious injuries. The jab, developed with Oxford University, can no longer be used in the European Union after the company voluntarily withdrew its ‘marketing authorisation’, coming into effect today. Similar applications to withdraw the vaccine will be made in other countries which had previously approved it, including the UK. Around 50 million doses were given in Britain. AstraZeneca’s withdrawal comes months after it admitted in legal documents that its jab can cause the thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS) reaction. One of those seeking compensation for injuries linked to AstraZeneca’s vaccine is father-of-two and IT engineer Jamie Scott. He was left with a permanent brain injury following a blood clot and bleed on the brain after getting the vaccine in April 2021. The 47-year-old has been unable to work ever since.

As the first magazine in the world, Nya Tider discloses where and when 2024 year’s Bilderberg meeting will take place. Nya Tider has been in contact with the Swedish government office and invoked the country’s constitutionally protected principle of public access to official records, in order to be able to obtain documents relating to the global lobby group’s communication to the Swedish government. Finally, we get to see an e-mail sent to Angela Kennedy, employed as a secretary to Sweden’s EU Minister, Jessika Roswall (Moderate party). It states that the Bilderberg Group meeting takes place in the Spanish capital of Madrid from May 30 to June 2. The message reads as follows: “Hello Angela – Thanks for the call earlier today. As I mentioned, it concerns the minister’s availability to attend the Bilderberg Meetings in Madrid on May 30 from 5 pm until June 2 at lunch. Great if you have the opportunity to tune in and come back shortly. Wish you a nice weekend.” The invitation to Bilderberg came from Sara Nyman at Investor AB, the mighty Swedish business family Wallenberg’s investment company. Source: Nya Tider/Swedish government. The e-mail reveals a startling fact. Sara Nyman, who invited the minister, in fact has no position within the Bilderberg group. Instead, she is employed at Investor AB as an executive assistant to Marcus Wallenberg, which in practice means that she is the closest secretary to the Swedish business magnate. It is also from an e-mail address at Investor AB that she contacts the cabinet committee. Marcus Wallenberg is vice chairman of Investor AB, the Wallenberg sphere’s investment company through which it owns large shares – and thus gains decisive influence – in large Swedish and international companies. For example, Investor AB is the largest shareholder in the bank SEB, where Marcus Wallenberg is chairman of the board of directors. Marcus Wallenberg is also a member of the Bilderberg group’s exclusive steering committee, which is responsible for the invitations. The fact that his secretary is now inviting the EU minister indicates that it is Mr. Wallenberg himself who is responsible for which Swedish ministers get the privilege of participating in the exclusive lobby meeting, which only gathers about 100 people from all over the world. Marcus Wallenberg is a member of the Bilderberg group’s steering committee and the person responsible for which Swedish ministers get the privilege of participating in the lobby meeting. Photo: Investor AB. In her reply to Sara Nyman, the secretary at the Swedish government’s cabinet committee, Angela Kennedy, responds that EU Minister Roswall will not be able to participate. Which ministers will participate is thus still unknown to the public. Susanne Grund, another secretary at the cabinet committee, writes to Nya Tider that they cannot find any additional documents relating to the Bilderberg group meeting of 2024. This despite the fact that the meeting starts already this month. The Bilderberg Group’s well-known strategy is to wait until the very end to make the meeting and its participants public, with the aim of making media scrutiny more difficult. Information before or after the meeting is also not made public by any governments, claiming that whoever attends the meeting does so as a “private person”. The information that the meeting will take place in Madrid at the end of the month has been completely unknown until Nya Tider’s disclosure. The message that Sara Nyman sent to the cabinet committee ends with a text that underlines the private nature of the content. “This message (including any attachments) contains confidential information intended for a specific individual and purpose, and is protected by law. If you are not the intended recipient, you should delete this message and are hereby notified that any disclosure, copying, or distribution of this message, or the taking of any action based on it, is strictly prohibited.” Nya Tider was the only Swedish newspaper to reveal that the government’s NATO negotiator Oscar Stenström attended the Bilderberg meeting last year in Lisbon, Portugal. His presence was secret: he was not on the official list of participants. Shortly after the meeting, he resigned from his position at the government office and was instead employed by Marcus Wallenberg.

As mass student protests quickly spread to campuses across the United States last week, and others took hold in Britain and elsewhere in Europe, the western media gave centre stage to one man to arbitrate on whether the demonstrations should be allowed to continue: US President Joe Biden. The establishment media reverentially relayed the president’s message that the protests were violent and dangerous, treating his assessment as if it had been handed down on a tablet of stone. Biden declared the protesters had no “right to cause chaos”, giving the green light for police to go in with even greater force to clear the encampments. This week, Biden raised the stakes further by suggesting the protests were evidence of a “ferocious surge” of antisemitism in the US. According to reports, more than 2,000 protesters have been arrested after some university administrators – under growing pressure from the White House and their own wealthy donors – called in local police….

Voting for elections in an apartheid state where 56% have no right to vote and an additional 8% have the right to vote with zero political significance whatsoever as well as being prevented by law from changing that system. 2. Granting legitimacy to the parliament by voting for that very regime, which is responsible for The Crime of Apartheid, a crime that is equivalent in its severity to The Crime of Genocide. 3. The abolishing of this supremacist apartheid regime will certainly not come from the privileged group, but rather in spite of that public, and it is also totally irrelevant what that public thinks of these issues. As in every similar situation – that regime will fall once it loses the legitimacy that it currently receives via the propaganda apparatus of Haaretz newspaper, the Orwellian discourse of lies of the Association for Civil Rights in Israel, and the facade of democracy in its parliament. That loss of legitimacy, along with a massive mobilization from the outside, such as that of the BDS movement, may indeed bring about a fundamental change. The element which is most hindering and inhibiting this change is that group which falsely insists that there is even the slightest form of democracy here.

New leader for SNP, after Greens let down. Scottish independence. Brexit. UK local election results. Tories lose half their Councillors. New Police and Crime Commissioner, Bristol. Shock analysis says Labour will FAIL to win majority at Westminster election – SHOCK analysis has predicted Labour will FAIL to win a majority at the next election. Taking the results so far announced in the English local elections on Friday, Sky News elections analyst predicted Keir Starmer’s party will become the largest party after the General Election. But in a major twist, Professor Michael Thrasher said they would fall short of an overall majority – meaning they would need to cut a deal with a smaller party to form a government. He said the party would win 294 seats – which is 32 seats short of the 326 boundary needed to form a majority. With more than half of wards declared, Professor Thrasher said Labour’s vote has risen from 33% in 2019 to 35% on the current estimate. He said the Tories were on just 26% of the vote, a 19-point drop compared with the 2019 General Election and one of its worst ever performances in any set of local elections. Meanwhile, the LibDems are 16% up five points on 2019, though Sky News said the party often out-performed in local elections. But a major assumption in the analysis is that votes for nationalist parties like the SNP in Scotland and Plaid Cymru in Wales will be unchanged. This means Labour will need to win big in Scotland to gain even a slim majority. The party currently holds two seats in Scotland but is projected to win seats across the Central Belt.

Bristol Clean Air Zone row erupts over expansion prospect – MP becomes embroiled in political storm after challenging Greens over their policy – A political row blew up after Labour MP Darren Jones challenged Bristol’s Greens to come clean on whether they would expand the city’s Clean Air Zone. Mr Jones demanded answers in an open letter on social media on Tuesday, April 30, hours after Green Cllr Heather Mack refused to rule out extending the CAZ. The MP told Green national co-leader and outgoing Bristol city councillor Carla Denyer that including more roads in the zone would be of “great concern” to residents living outside its boundaries and asked her to clarify the party’s stance urgently ahead of Thursday’s local elections. Cllr Denyer replied on X – formerly Twitter – that an expansion was not the Greens’ policy but that they would “never rule out a measure if evidence showed it would save lives”. Bristol North West MP Mr Jones received hundreds of replies to his post, with the vast majority criticising him. Several called it an “embarrassment” while one accused him of “playing dog-whistle politics”. In a follow-up post on Wednesday morning, Mr Jones said he supported the current CAZ but was opposed to an expansion. The storm was sparked following comments by Cllr Mack (Green, Lockleaze) during a local elections debate on BBC Radio Bristol on Tuesday morning. She said the CAZ was introduced because 300 people a year were dying from polluted air in the city and that more data and time was needed to assess the zone’s impact on air quality before its future could be determined. She said: “I’m not ruling out expanding it or not expanding it – neither is on the cards right now. “It’s not in our manifesto, it’s not something we’re immediately planning to do.” Cllr Andrew Brown (Lib Dem, Hengrove & Whitchurch Park) agreed that extending the zone could not be ruled out.But cabinet member for housing services and energy Cllr Kye Dudd (Labour, Southmead) said that once levels of nitrogen dioxide had fallen to within legal limits, the CAZ had “done its job” and his party had no plans to expand it. Tory group leader Cllr Mark Weston agreed the scheme should be scrapped when Bristol’s air was legally compliant because it was costing families money…

Last year, Mr Rees tried to be selected as Labour’s parliamentary candidate for the new Bristol North East seat, but lost out to another candidate. This year, he was awarded an OBE for services to local government. In his farewell speech in March, Mr Rees said: “14,500 homes will have been built since 2016 including many affordable and social. More houses and more affordable houses will be built in the city this year than in any year since 2004, when a Labour government was supporting cities to build. We have the biggest council house building programme in a generation. “We are a city of contradictions. Among them is the way we combine being home to some of the nation’s leading talent, a thriving creative sector and a high number of business start ups — with a collective lack of self-belief that, when it’s full blown, turns into a debilitating cynicism. “We’ve seen this clearly around mass transit. When I came in, the political debate was dominated by car parking and fun Sundays. Today, the city talks about inclusion, homes and growth, billion pound regeneration programmes, carbon reduction and the climate challenge, biodiversity, race and class, and building a future city. “And from giving a Ted Talk at the global conference in Vancouver, to launching 3Ci, and speaking on behalf of the global Mayors Migration Council at several UN conferences on migration and refugees, we are shaping national and international agendas.” Technically the mayor’s term is expected to end on Tuesday, May 7, when newly-elected councillors are sworn in, according to council sources. But he is thought to have already cleared his office in City Hall and left the building earlier this week. Mr Rees declined to be interviewed for this article, due to existing diary commitments.

The annual number of people booked into temporary accommodation has also doubled over the same period. Figures released after a Freedom of Information request to Bristol City Council show that in April 2017, there were 8,266 households on the housing register in Bristol. This has risen steadily over the past few years, and now stands at 21,411 according to the latest figures. During 2016–17, there were 1,314 households booked into temporary accommodation throughout the whole year. ‘Households’ include families, couples and single people. The latest figures show that during 2022–23, there were 3,657 booked into temporary accommodation throughout the year. The rising number of people desperate for somewhere to live in Bristol raises questions about how the housing crisis has become more severe. Housing is playing a key role in upcoming local elections, and will be on the minds of many voters when they cast their ballot on Thursday, May 2.

This major UK city could trial free public transport Glaswegians aged 22 to 59 could be getting bus and subway travel on the house Glaswegians — we don’t want to get your hopes up, but your city could be on its way towards offering totally free public transport. Glasgow City Council has officially been given support to develop a pilot that will give locals access to buses and the subway on the house. It hopes that providing free transport would help reduce inequality in the city and be a step towards achieving net zero carbon emissions. A pilot would see 1,000 people between the ages of 22 to 59 given free access to public transport for nine weeks straight. People outside of that age range already have free bus travel in the city. The scheme would work by providing each participant with preloaded travel cards, allowing them to access all modes of transport within zones 1 and 2 of the city. Obviously, the pilot won’t come cheap. It’s expected to cost around £250,000, and while funds have been allocated to support the development of the trial, no money has been allocated for its actual delivery yet. Once more funding is secured and the pilot goes ahead, data and responses from participants would be used to ‘feed into wider decision-making on the future of public transport within Glasgow’. If it was to be rolled out, a study revealed that offering every Glaswegian age 22 to 59 free public transport over nine weeks would cost around £95.7 million. And that’s not including extra back office and admin costs. Everything is still in its early stages, but watch this space! Transport in one of the UK’s biggest cities could soon get a radical overhaul…

The council currently owns a number of commercial investments, including offices at Aztec West 600 near junction 16 of the M5, which are currently occupied by Elbit Systems UK. Councillors approved a motion at the full council meeting in Bridgwater on Tuesday afternoon (April 23), agreeing to sell the property as soon as possible and to pursue all legal avenues to evict the company, describing it as “a major UK-based provider of weapons to the Israeli Defence Forces”. The company subsequently contacted the council to state that none of the military weapons or equipment it produced was being used to supply Israel in the ongoing Gaza conflict. The council has now withdrawn its statement and apologised to the company – but said it still intended to sell off the premises as soon as possible. In a statement published on Friday afternoon (April 26), a spokesman said: “On April 23, 2024, Somerset Council voted on a motion in respect of a commercial investment property it owns at 600 Aztec West. =”That motion included a statement that ‘the tenant Elbit UK [is] a major UK based provider of weapons to the Israeli Defence Forces, used in the current Gaza catastrophe’. Elbit Systems UK Ltd. has contacted us to say this is factually incorrect and they do not supply weapons or military equipment to the Israeli Defence Forces or the Israeli Ministry of Defence. “The council would like to apologise and withdraw the statement that Elbit Systems UK Ltd. supplies military equipment to the Israeli Defence Forces or the Israeli Ministry of Defence.” The council subsequently clarified that this decision does not reverse the other parts of the approved motion, and that it would continue to pursue the sale of the building.

Lord Rothschild and Rupert Murdoch are extremely well regarded by and connected to leaders in these sectors. Their guidance and participation will prove invaluable.” (Not to mention political connections. Calderdale police constable Mohammed Adil, 26, shared two images in support of Hamas – a banned group in the UK – just weeks after the October 7 attack on Israel that killed 1,200 people and saw another 250 being taken hostage. The messages Adil shared on his WhatsApp stories in October and November last year show a Hamas fighter wearing a Hamas headband, prosecutor Bridget Fitzpatrick told Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday morning.

The image posted on October 31 had writing on it saying: “Today is the time for the Palestinian people to rise, set their paths straight and establish an independent Palestinian state.” It was said to be a quote from the leader of Hamas’s military wing, Mohammed Deif. The image on November 4 had another message on it, saying: “We will hold accountable all those who occupied our lands and Allah will hold accountable all those who remained silent against this occupation and oppression.” The second quote was said to be from Abu Ubaida, a spokesman for the Al-Qassam brigade – whi is Hamas’s military wing. Two of Adil’s colleagues reported to their superior officers that they had viewed images posted by Adil on his WhatsApp stories which caused them “concern”, the prosecution said. Adil had 1,092 contacts on his WhatsApp at the time who would have been able to access the images for 24 hours, Ms Fitzpatrick said. Adil was arrested on November 6 and had his mobile seized. He answered no comment to all questions during his interview…

However, Global made no reference to the petition or Myska’s absence, insisting that the changes were part of a “refreshed weekend schedule”. LBC said: “As part of the changes, Sangita Myska is leaving the station at the end of her contract, after nearly two years with the station.” The station’s senior managing editor Tom Cheal added: “We’d like to thank Sangita for her fantastic contribution to LBC and wish her every success in the future.” Nearly 25,000 people have signed a petition asking LBC to reinstate Myska, with listeners speculating on social media that the absence was linked to an interview she conducted with Israeli government spokesperson, Avi Hyman, over its military action in Gaza.

The plan was that Roger Cook would pose as the representative of a reactionary Middle Eastern regime eager to join the nuclear club and keen to buy enough plutonium 239 to make several small nuclear bombs Back in Britain, the programme hired an eminent consultant nuclear engineer who built us a highly accurate replica nuclear device in a briefcase from information freely available on the internet. There were several options, but the programme opted to replicate a relatively simple bomb that would operate in one of two modes – in that even if it failed to produce a nuclear explosion, it would still act as a very effective Radiological Dispersal Device – an RDD. These evil devices later became known as ‘dirty bombs’, so called because triggering them would disperse countless millions of highly radioactive particles over the target area and could render that area uninhabitable for centuries. In a seedy back-street maisonette in Moscow, Cook’s Mafiosi targets negotiated to sell him 25 kilogrammes of Plutonium 239 for $200 million and offered a sample from a stash kept under the stairs next to their vacuum cleaner. The situation was as bizarre as it was dangerous and the sample later tested out as the real thing. Also on offer was a ready-made bomb in the form of an SS-20 nuclear warhead. Naturally, that was as far as the programme took the transaction, but the vendors were reported to the Russian security services, the FSB, later that day. They were promptly arrested and the illegal nuclear material was recovered. So, it was relatively easy to build a dirty bomb – and as the Cook Report would prove, relatively easy to acquire the nuclear material needed to do so. And if mere journalists could do this, surely a terrorist could too.

UVA President Jim Ryan wrote in a message that officials had learned that “individuals unaffiliated with the university” who presented “some safety concerns” had joined the protesters on the campus.
