Serious failings in Bristol’s council housing says Government regulator Council chiefs have apologised to tens of thousands of tenants There are ‘serious failings’ in the standard and management of Bristol’s council housing – and the city is one of four across the country to be given a damning judgement by the Government’s social housing regulator today. Council chiefs have apologised to every single council tenant in the city for the failings, which have been outlined in a scathing report from the Regulator of Social Housing. The report found there is a huge backlog of repairs to around half the council homes in the city, but even more worryingly, there are thousands of overdue fire safety ‘actions’, and the council could not show that it is meeting carbon monoxide safety requirements for almost all its 26,700 homes. The council has admitted dealing with the backlog will take so many years council chiefs can’t even put a target date by which things will be sorted, meeting the Government’s new standards will take ‘tens of millions’ of pounds, and they and other local authorities are now appealing to the new Labour Government for extra funding to sort out the homes. The Regulator of Social Housing is the Government’s official authority to ensure council and housing association properties are up to legal standard – and their damning judgement makes it clear that Bristol City Council, as a council housing landlord, is failing to meet the legal requirements. Bristol’s judgement comes on the same day the RSH issued similar judgements on councils in Guildford, Sheffield and Cambridge, but Bristol’s was the largest scale of failure. The RSH said it found that: “Bristol City Council could not evidence that it is meeting carbon monoxide safety requirements for over 22,000 homes (out of 26,700 total homes). It also reported 1,900 open damp and mould cases, more than 16,000 overdue repairs and 3,000 overdue fire safety actions. In addition, the council does not have up-to-date data about the condition of tenants’ homes,” the judgement said. Responding to the judgement today, Bristol City Council said the number of overdue repairs was more like 11,000 – the 16,000 figure included occasions when council housing tenants reported the same issue more than once. Bristol City Council, Guildford Borough Council, Octavia Housing and Sheffield City Council have each been given a C3 grading by RSH, which means there are ‘serious failings and they need to make significant improvements’. This is the first time RSH has published consumer gradings for social landlords, following the changes to its role in April 2024. What does the Regulator say? “Landlords must provide safe and decent homes for tenants, have an effective complaints process, and put things right when there are problems,” said the chief of regulatory engagement at the RSH, Kate Dodsworth. “The judgements we published today show that each of these landlords have issues which they need to address promptly. All landlords need to make sure they deliver the outcomes in our standards and inform us when there are material issues. “Our new approach to regulation, which started in April, gives us new tools to scrutinise landlords’ performance and, where there are issues, drive them to deliver long-term improvements for the benefit of tenants,” she added.

New city council chief to receive £192k salary The new chief executive will start in January 2025 The incoming chief executive of a city council is set to be paid £192,000 a year, a council meeting has heard. Nick Hibberd will receive the annual salary from Bristol City Council when he replaces the interim chief executive Paul Martin on 6 January. His salary was revealed at a council meeting on Tuesday after councillor Kelvin Blake successfully challenged the decision to withhold the figures. Council leader Tony Dyer, council leader, said Bristol had the “lowest salary paid to its chief executive among core cities”. He told councillors he received permission to reveal the salary after initially refusing due to personal data reasons. Hibberd has more than 25 years’ experience at a senior level of local government, and most recently worked for London Borough of Croydon’s corporate management team, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said. Dyer said the role was graded independently using an approved method and comparing it with similar positions elsewhere. He said Hibberd’s salary would rise each year in line with national Joint Negotiating Committee pay awards for senior council officers. “I agree it’s vitally important that we are very careful with how we spend public money,” Dyer said. “It’s also important that we respect individual privacy.” In August, Dyer warned the council was at risk of going bankrupt as it faced a £22m overspend. Hibberd has been approached for comment about his salary.

Gaza – the conflict – BBC Radio 4 documentary series. Ruthless Zionist terrorism. The Conflict Middle East The First Intifada (1987): What impact did the Palestinian uprising have? We look back on the region’s history and discuss what it can teach us about the future. Jonny Dymond brings together a carefully curated panel of experts, academics and journalists to talk about the conflict in the region. What has happened in history to lead us to this point? And, what can history teach us about what might happen next? This week, Jonny is joined by BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner, Dr Dina Rezk, associate professor of modern Middle Eastern history at Reading University and Dr H A Hellyer, senior associate fellow at the think tank RUSI. They explore the First Intifada, a mass uprising by Palestinians, in 1987 against 20 years of Israeli occupation, and its lasting impact on the region. This episode was made by Keiligh Baker with Ivana Davidovic. The technical producer was Dafydd Evans and David Crackles. The assistant editor is Ben Mundy. The senior news editor is Sam Bonham. The BBC has been the subject of intense scrutiny over the last week for its handling of the conflict so far, including for opting not to name Hamas as terrorists, citing impartiality. Meanwhile, the Palestine Action group has soaked the entryways of BBC buildings with blood-red paint, accusing the BBC of “biased and inaccurate reporting” and “manufacturing consent for the occupation’s genocide of Palestinians”. This week, there were reports that the BBC has received around 800 complaints that it is biased against Israel, and almost exactly the same number complaining that it’s biased against Palestinians. This is the kind of two-sided response that may probably make the BBC breathe a sigh of relief that it’s getting this whole impartiality thing just about right. But what does it mean for the experience of us listeners on an individual level? Personally, I find it helpful to listen to specific reporters who have proven knowledge and experience rather than try to absorb the entire output of a whole organisation. So I’m listening to Doucet, and also to Katya Adler, whose new daily explainer series Understand Israel and the Palestinians (Radio 4) has just been parachuted into the schedules at the last minute this week. Like Doucet, Adler has a depth of experience here. Adler’s first child was born in the region when she was the BBC’s Middle East correspondent more than 10 years ago. She has, since then, developed her journalistic gift for explaining complex international politics on other stages – she was the BBC’s go-to reporter for explaining the EU’s Brexit negotiations as they were ongoing – but here, Adler returns to explore the social and political structure of the region she knows so well. Any broadcaster with a depth of expertise in the history and politics of the Middle East faces the challenge of finding a way to report on the latest developments to listeners who will come to their programmes with their own range of knowledge and experience. Listeners may have firmly taken a side already, or may feel overwhelmed by the complexity of the situation. It takes skill to speak to all of these people with the same clarity and care, and without being patronising. Doucet and Adler are masterful at this. Whatever the successes and failures of the BBC as a whole, these individual reporters are shining under pressure. And there’s a broadcaster away from the BBC who is doing an excellent job, too, and he’s not even a broadcaster by training. Former Tory cabinet minister Rory Stewart, who presents The Rest is Politics (Goalhanger Podcasts) with Alastair Campbell, gave one of the most succinct and accessible, even-handed explanations of the history of the conflict that I’ve ever heard. He doesn’t shy away from calling Hamas terrorists, either. Episode 178: Israel at War is the episode you want for the explainer, but there have also been further episodes on the theme, featuring more in-depth discussion emerging through interviews with both the Israeli historian Yuval Noah Harari, and Husam Zomlot, the Palestinian ambassador to the UK. In a time of dehumanisation, violence and fear, listening to clear and insightful programmes like these feels like a way to hold onto a little more humanity, and a little more hope.

‘The Beginning of the End of Humanity’, Tanya Haj Hassan – Dr. Chris Hook, a Bristol Emergency Doctor who also works for Medicine Sans Frontier (MSF), joins Tony and Martin. He has been working as an emergency doctor in Gaza this year. US surgeon breaks down reading stories from Gaza doctors. US paediatric surgeon Dr Tanya Haj-Hassan broke down in tears at a UN hearing as she recounted stories from her medical colleagues in Gaza about the ‘pain and depravity’ they are enduring. A growing international outcry Dr Haj Hassan’s testimony comes as international recognition of the genocide in Gaza has grown. Last week, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity. The International Court of Justice is also hearing a genocide case against Israel over its conduct in Gaza. Despite a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire, the Israeli military has continued its assault, which began after a Hamas attack last year. The Health Ministry in Gaza reported that three massacres of families occurred in the past 24 hours, killing 48 and injuring 53. Many victims remain trapped under rubble, as ongoing strikes prevent rescue operations. Dr Haj Hassan criticised the global community for its inaction, saying, “Palestinians don’t need pity. They don’t need praise. They need meaningful solidarity and urgent intervention to end these atrocities.” The human cost of inaction Beyond the immediate medical crisis, Dr Haj Hassan described a society pushed to its breaking point. Entire families have been wiped out, schools and universities obliterated, and basic utilities such as water and sanitation destroyed. She painted a grim picture of life for Gaza’s children, who face constant bombardments, hunger, and the spread of disease. “A child who lived in an apartment and attended school 14 months ago is now trying to survive under a tent in the cold, without food or clean water,” she said. “Every aspect of life in Gaza has been dismantled.” Gaza’s Health Ministry on Thursday confirmed that 48 more Palestinians had been killed in the last 24 hours, pushing the total death toll since the conflict began last year to 44,330. Over 104,933 people have been injured, and countless remain trapped under rubble as rescuers struggle to reach them due to relentless bombardments. A plea for accountability Dr Haj Hassan concluded her testimony with a call for global action. She warned that the precedent set in Gaza — where international law is systematically violated — poses a threat to global stability. “The genocide in Gaza is not just a tragedy for Palestinians; it signals the erosion of international norms and the rule of law,” she said. In a message to the world, she quoted a Palestinian nurse who remains trapped in Gaza: “We are being buried every minute. We disappear every minute. I want the world to know I am a human being, not a number or a name on a list.” Dr Haj Hassan also reflected on the historical gravity of the current crisis, saying, “One day someone will dig up the records of our testimonies, pleading for 14 months.” “They will dig up the records of Palestinians covering their own genocide when international journalists were unprecedentedly banned from entering. Palestinian children setting up press conferences to tell the world that their lives mattered. We will have to reckon with this history.” Dr. Tanya Haj Hassan, a pediatric intensive care doctor with Medical Aid for Palestinians, shared the horrific realities of Gaza. Witnessing systematic targeting of civilians, healthcare workers, and hospitals, she described the unimaginable toll on Palestinian lives. Despite personal loss, healthcare workers persist under constant threats. Dr. Haj Hassan called for urgent global action, urging the international community to move beyond pity to meaningful support, emphasizing the courage and resilience of those on the frontlines. Gaza genocide is The Beginning of the End of Humanity’  Israel turned Jabalia into a barren desert and made our home a grave After burying our grandfather, my displaced family and I were forced to flee our home in northern Gaza, struggling to survive bombs, starvation and the ’roundabout of death’ When my family was forced to flee Jabalia last month, we had two options: die and leave our bodies under the rubble or on the road, to be torn apart by stray dogs, or survive with the constant threat of death looming over us, enduring the bitter taste of another Nakba, or catastrophe, until we die. From that moment on, we became refugees for the second time in less than two generations. We were forced to leave behind apartments, buildings and lands that meant everything to us. In the blink of an eye, we became nothing. It was in Jabalia that my father dedicated years of hard work to build a 200 sqm apartment for me – a symbol of hope and stability for my future family. Every tile and ornament was chosen with love, a testament to our dreams of a peaceful life. After the war began, I bought solar energy equipment for charging and lighting. I did not overspend on it because I thought a day like this might come when I would have to leave everything behind. Since the beginning of the war on Gaza, the Israeli army has launched three brutal ground operations in Jabalia. While the third operation is still ongoing, hundreds of bodies lie under the rubble, scattered in the streets and inside homes. On the evening of 5 October 2024, the Israeli military carried out intense air strikes, paving the way for a ground invasion the following morning from both the eastern and western sides of Jabalia. The incursion forced us to flee the shelter we had sought and return to our house in the centre of Jabalia, where all of our relatives gathered. We hoped that the operation would be limited and that the army would withdraw after two days. During this time, Jabalia transformed into a barren desert. There was no water, food or safe place. Hospitals and schools were reduced to rubble and medical assistance was a distant memory. Living there became impossible. As time passed, the advance of military vehicles and the intensity of air strikes increased and it became hellish. Those were the hardest days of my life and the lives of all my family members. On the evening of 7 October, the army launched a fierce air strike nearby that shook the very foundations of our home. Just two minutes later, my grandfather took his final breath and died. He spent his last day barely able to catch his breath, panting in fear, his lips trembling until the end. At the time of my grandfather’s passing, Israeli military vehicles were just a few metres away from our home and had surrounded the cemetery. This made burying him there impossible. It took us until morning to decide how to temporarily bury him in light of the circumstances. When the morning of 8 October arrived, we contacted the hospital and requested an ambulance, but they told us they could not move or reach us. I suggested that we bury him in a nearby area, but my father saw that as too risky and decided to bury him at home. Trapped in the house, my siblings and I started digging the grave. We broke through a 7cm-thick layer of concrete, then dug in the sand to a depth of 60cm and a length of 170cm. Fear engulfed us as the strikes, bombings and gunfire continued.

US mercenary firms compete for ‘huge contracts’ to control security in north Gaza: Report Infamous Pentagon contractors Constellis and Orbis are the front-runners to take over for the Israeli army once the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in north Gaza comes to a halt Israel is examining the launch of a “pilot program” that could see US private security firms replace the army in northern Gaza to “accompany food and medicine convoys” for Palestinians who remain in the devastated region, according to a report by Israeli daily Globes. Among the top competitors for the multi-million dollar contract are Constellis, the direct successor to infamous mercenary company Blackwater, and Orbis, a little-known South Carolina company run by former generals that has worked with the Pentagon for 20 years. Officials say the pilot program for north Gaza aims to “prevent Hamas or other gangs from taking over the aid trucks and free the IDF soldiers from the dangerous mission.” In recent weeks, Gaza’s interior ministry established a new police force to deal wth groups of bandits and gangs that have been raiding humanitarian aid shipments and blackmailing international organizations in the southern Gaza Strip. The UN has said these gangs are likely “benefiting from a passive if not active benevolence” or “protection” from the Israeli army. In October, a third US security firm – Global Delivery Company (GDC) – which describes itself as “Uber for warzones” – claimed to be working with another firm to create and manage “humanitarian bubbles” in Gaza. GDC is run by Mordechai Kahane, an Israeli businessman who worked with Israeli intelligence during the war on Syria to arm extremist groups seeking to topple the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Although no official figure exists about the size of the contracts being offered by Tel Aviv for these mercenary firms, Globes cites Lt. Col. Yochanan Zoraf, a researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) and former advisor on Arab affairs in the Israeli army, as saying the figure will likely reach “billions of shekels per year.” “These are not companies that will manage the daily lives of the residents,” Zoraf claims, adding that “peripheral responsibility for the defense of [north Gaza] as well as the civil responsibility itself” falls at Israel’s feet. The former army officer also says Tel Aviv will likely “ask that the US – or an outside party – finance the program.”

Huckabee is a staunch supporter of Israel. After his appointment, Trump released a statement in which he said Huckabee “loves Israel, and the people of Israel, and likewise, the people of Israel love him. Mike will work tirelessly to bring about Peace in the Middle East!” His appointment demonstrates a “very hawkish, very pro-right-wing Israel” approach by the Trump administration, Yossi Mekelberg, an expert on Israel at the Chatham House think tank, told Al Jazeera. He said Huckabee’s appointment is similar to that of David Friedman, who served as US Ambassador to Israel between 2017 and 2021 and supports Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank. Huckabee views Israel as an “overwhelming ally of the United States”, Paul Musgrave, an associate professor of government at Georgetown University in Qatar, told Al Jazeera. “He will certainly be a strong voice for a pro-Israel faction in the administration and the country,” he said. Huckabee has tied his evangelical faith to support for Israeli control of the West Bank and his support for Israeli settlements, which are illegal under international law. In an interview in 2017 with the CNN news network, he said: “There is no such thing as a West Bank. It’s Judea and Samaria (the territory’s biblical name). There’s no such thing as a settlement. They’re communities, they’re neighbourhoods, they’re cities. There’s no such thing as an occupation.” Huckabee has gone as far as to question Palestinian identity.

Pro-assisted dying group has its origins in eugenics – and it all revolves around your favourite chocolate company What does a sitting Labour MP, a multimillion charitable trust, and the most prominent UK-based pro-assisted dying lobby group have in common? It turns out, quite a lot actually – and all of them may be about to ruin your favourite confectionery treat forever. However, the string of perturbing connections the Canary is about to reveal has far more alarming, and dangerous implications. This is because it exposes the shocking eugenics origins and links of the foremost pro-assisted dying organisation in the UK – Dignity in Dying. Worse still, it sheds light on the fact that eugenics is the thread weaving through its long history – and still casts a shadow over it to this day. In particular, it revolves around one famous family who is still a key backer of the group, and also supports other organisations that grew out of the eugenics movement. It’s vital context ahead of the second parliamentary reading on Kim Leadbeater’s assisted dying bill. Most importantly, it underscores all the more why MPs must take chronically ill and disabled people’s concerns about a slippery slope of assisted suicide, extremely seriously in the upcoming vote. Assisted dying: the eugenics origin of a prolific lobby group Labour peer Lord Arthur Ponsonby was another founding member. As the Spectator wrote, he: put forward the Voluntary Euthanasia Bill in 1936, arguing against the ‘mistaken notion’ that the Bill was about sparing people pain, insisting that it was really about ‘being a burden’, intended for those who ‘are no longer of any use’. Worse still, it’s not only Millard and Ponsonby Dignity in Dying has seemingly hidden from its history. Co-founder of VES Dr Charles John Bond was a consultant surgeon at Leicestershire Royal Infirmary. Crucially, he was another Eugenics Society associate, member, fellow, and vice-president. Bond sat on the Committee to establish the Bureau of Human Heredity and wrote a number of racist eugenics-orientated publications. For instance, this included one titled: ‘Causes of Racial Decay’. In a 1930 speech at the Modern Churchmen’s conference, Bond’s ableist, classist eugenicist beliefs were on full display. He purportedly told the conference that: sterilisation… should be applied to cases of irresponsible persons of low intelligence and weak will. In short, Dignity in Dying began life as an organisation neck-deep in the abhorrent racist, classist, ableist eugenics movement. Naturally, it’s not a fact the group likes to shout about today. CADBURY DESCENDANTS SUPPORTING ASSISTED DYING TODAY Today, George Woodall Cadbury’s daughters and grandchildren have carried his work on birth control forward too. Caroline Ann Woodroffe and Lyndall Elizabeth Boal, their husbands, and some of their children are now the GW Cadbury Trust’s trustees. It’s still a regular funder to Planned Parenthood. In 2023 for instance, it donated £5,155 to the organisation. Incidentally, Caroline also penned her father’s obituary for the Guardian, lionising his and wife Barbara’s long-term work with Planned Parenthood. What’s more, Woodroffe has continued in the tradition of her parent’s work in various women’s sexual health and fertility job roles. One that stands out is her former chairship of the Birth Control Trust. This is because, once again, it’s another organisation with a direct line back to the eugenics movement. The Galton Institute founded it in 1977, and crucially, the institute was none other than the Eugenics Society in shiny new wrapping. Only, its new namesake was hardly a break from its eugenics provenance either. Instead, it was a hat tip to yet another rampant early eugenicist, Francis Galton. And in the legacy of her forebears’ nexus of eugenics, birth and population control, as well as voluntary euthanasia, Woodroffe too has ties to the modern-day rebranding of the VES. Specifically, she appears to have thrown her support behind Dignity in Dying’s call for legalising assisted suicide for terminally ill patients. In particular, as an epidemiologist, she signed the Dignity in Dying instigated Healthcare Professionals for Assisted Dying (HPAD) campaign in support of the organisation’s aims in 2012. Her name doesn’t appear in its more recent webpage iterations. However, the organisation appears to have pared down the information it publicises on its supporters more generally across its website.

Living in caves in Bristol. Bristol man living in cave on side of cliff as he ‘can’t afford home in city’ With benefits and council housing hard to come by, some of Bristol’s homeless population have resorted to living in caves, despite bitter cold in the winter months A YouTuber visiting Bristol has found a homeless man “living in caves” to avoid the sky-high rents in the city. Joe Fish ventured to the fifth-most expensive place to live in the UK, in the hope of discovering whether rumours of “cave dwellers” in the city are true. He walked to the “outskirts” of the city and through thick woodland “on the side of the cliff” before finding his answer. An unnamed cave-dweller showed Joe around his surprisingly neat and tidy cave. He said that, without a bank account, it was impossible to access benefits and even those high street banks that offer a so-called “homeless person’s account” require proof of address from account holders. Without any hope of finding a permanent place to live, he has resorted to the caves, sorting himself out some running water and setting up a sink to wash his dishes. There is also a double bed and a “natural filter” drain. But the troglodyte life isn’t for everyone. He stressed: “A lot of people come out and think it’s great, it’s wonderful, but it’s alright until suddenly it becomes winter.” The caves are also sometimes used as shelters by drinkers and drug users, which means they need to be regularly cleaned out. “I sort of generally take care of the place,” the man explained. “I’ve already cleaned six bagfuls of cans and bottles out of there. “There were loads of old sleeping bags that you know you wouldn’t ever want to sleep in again so we got rid of all of them and and basically cleaned out all the cr*p.” Joe, who has catalogued the UK’s housing crisis through his channel, was stunned by what he had discovered. He explained: “Things have got so bad in Bristol that people have literally reverted back to the Stone Age and are now inhabiting caves … I’m literally in shock I can’t believe that things have got this bad for some people.”

It therefore follows that nothing it does, whatever democratic rights and freedoms it tramples on, can be criticised. Like the scoundrel and pound shop patriot that he is, Starmer wraps up everything in the Union Jack. All politicians lie when they need to get out of a sticky situation. No better example of this was Boris Johnson. However even Johnson is a model of probity compared to Starmer. Not because he is an interesting individual in himself, quite the contrary. Listening to Starmer is akin to watching paint dry. What is fascinating is seeing how someone can become the walking, talking embodiment of the security state. That is the clue to Starmer’s complete absence of charisma or personality. It is easy to laugh at Starmer but that would be a mistake, because he is certainly dangerous. He is a man who is quite happy to trigger a nuclear war if the ‘special relationship’ with the United States demands it. The only thing that gets Starmer animated is the story of his Corbyn supporting tool-maker father. The fact that he spent most of his first speech to Labour Party conference going on about his boring family says everything about what motivates him. Most Labour politicians start off on the left and move to the right. Even Tony Blair was once on the soft left. Starmer however has always been on the NATO right. Apart from his commitment to Britain’s alliance with the United States and the virtues of neo-liberal, free-market capitalism, coupled with his devotion to the Security State and the necessity of removing as many of our freedoms as possible, it is difficult to work out whether Starmer ever had any firmly held convictions. People often point out that Starmer is a liar, which is true, but this misses the point. When Starmer says something he does it because he believes that it will give him an advantage and serve his purpose at the time. The question of whether or not it is true is secondary. In reality it is simply besides the point. It’s not that Starmer deliberately sets out to tell a lie. It’s just that whether or not something is true has no meaning for him. What Starmer says is dictated by whether he feels it is beneficial to him and his politics. Starmer lives in a world of lies and for him the truth is an alien being. That is why it is unfair to simply call Starmer a liar when his whole political method is based on entirely different criteria. Starmer is what might be called politically autistic. The truth is irrelevant. Lying is part of his political pathology. Of course it is amusing that one minute he calls Corbyn a friend and the next minute he’s telling everyone he’ll cross the street to avoid the fellow. Or that he’s telling LBC’s Nick Ferrari that Israel ‘does have that right’ to cut off food, water etc. and the following day, following the inevitable outcry, he’s denying he ever said it. All this shows is that despite having plenty of practice, Starmer isn’t a good liar. No better example is there than the 10 Pledges that Starmer made to get elected. Of course Starmer didn’t believe a word of them but then why should he? He knew that Labour Party members were stupid enough to believe anything he told them so he told them what they wanted to hear. Who can blame him? Leaks expose secret British military cell plotting to ‘keep Ukraine fighting’ Kit Klarenberg·November 16, 2024 – Project Alchemy was founded on the personal orders of Lt. General Charlie Stickland, who is charged with “planning, executing and integrating UK led joint and multinational overseas military operations” as the head of Britain’s Permanent Joint Headquarters. Stickland boasts in leaked communications that his family “come from a long line of pirates and buccaneers.” In his email signature, the general identifies himself as an “LGBTQ+ Advocate” in rainbow-colored text. Stickland and his assistant, Maj. Ed Harris, did not answer The Grayzone’s calls to their personal phones, nor did they respond to detailed questions submitted to them through WhatsApp.Leaked files show top UK military figures conspired to carry out the Kerch bridge bombing, covertly train “Gladio”-style stay-behind forces in Ukraine, and groom the British public for a drop in living standards caused by the proxy war against Russia. Emails and internal documents reviewed by The Grayzone reveal details of a cabal of British military and intelligence veterans which plotted to escalate and prolong the Ukraine proxy war “at all costs.” Convened under the direction of the British Ministry of Defense in the immediate aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the cell referred to itself as Project Alchemy. As British leadership sabotaged peace talks between Kiev and Moscow, the cell put forward an array of plans “to keep Ukraine fighting” by imposing “strategic dilemmas, costs and frictions upon Russia.” The leaks obtained by The Grayzone expose a hidden hand behind Britain’s policy in Ukraine, showing in unusually granular detail how it aimed to engineer a long, grinding war through covert operations that stretched the bounds of legality. Project Alchemy’s proposed schemes spanned every conceivable field of warfare, from cyber attacks to “discreet operations” to outright terrorism. The secret cell even put forward a plan to “aggressively pursue” and “dismantle” independent media outlets – including The Grayzone – through an aggressive campaign of legal harassment and online censorship, so they “would be forced to close.” The incendiary blueprints were fed to the highest levels of the British state and national security structure, where they were apparently well-received. Founded by a senior British Ministry of Defence official, Project Alchemy is composed of veteran military and intelligence operatives united by a desire for all-out war between the West and Russia. Some have trained Ukrainian forces in clandestine sabotage tactics. Members of the national security cabal tacitly acknowledged that their proposed operations stretched the bounds of British law. Thus they suggested that London should be “prepared to creatively use the law” to meet its goals, and even be willing to erase “legal restrictions on UK deniable ops” against Russia. Some of Project Alchemy’s most extreme recommendations have already been implemented, often with calamitous results. These include the cell’s proposal to strike Crimea’s Kerch Bridge, which prompted a Russian escalation that saw punishing attacks on Ukraine’s electricity infrastructure. Alchemy also envisioned the construction of a secret, Gladio-style army of Ukrainian partisan fighters to carry out assassination, sabotage, and terror missions behind enemy lines. It appears the British premier, Keir Starmer, fell under the influence of the Project Alchemy cabal soon after his election in July, when he eagerly embraced the role of “wartime prime minister.” After pledging to support Ukraine “as long as it takes,” however, Starmer is quietly backing away from the maximalist policy. In Kiev, Ukrainians are left to ponder how their “friends” in London got them into this mess, and why they can not, or will not get them out of it. The British spooks who gathered around Project Alchemy reasoned that the longer the proxy war continued, the more Russian president Vladimir Putin’s “credibility at home and abroad drops, and his ability to fight NATO is degraded.” Today, Project Alchemy’s gambit has clearly backfired, as Putin remains popular within Russia, while a crumbling Ukrainian army loses territory by the day despite constant re-arming by the West. But the war planners in London remain staunchly committed to escalation, refusing to shelve their diabolical proposals.

Hertfordshire police admit they breached the human rights of journalist arrested at protest Tom Bowles was arrested whilst photographing a Just Stop Oil protest by officers untrained in the important role of the media at protests He was detained for over 14 hours, his equipment was seized and his family home was searched late at night Hertfordshire police have admitted his arrest was unlawful and that his human rights were breached. On 7 November 2022 Tom, a professional photographer, was photographing a Just Stop Oil protest on the M25. He was arrested for conspiracy to commit public nuisance despite making clear to numerous officers that he was there as a member of the press just doing his job. He repeatedly offered officers his press card, which has a hotline on the back that would have instantly verified that he was a member of the press. His arresting officer later admitted not understanding anything about the press, or how a press card works. Tom was one of a number of journalists arrested unlawfully at protests in November 2022. An independent review carried out shortly after his arrest found that officers were directed to arrest, finding that “arrest was the likely outcome regardless of the information obtained”. The review also found that Tom’s arresting officer had not completed required training on the rights of reporters and photographers during public order situations, despite that “it was entirely foreseeable that journalists were going to be present at sites of activity with a view of reporting on the impact” [2]. Tom pursued civil action against Hertfordshire police, who admitted that his arrest was unlawful and a breach of his human rights. The police have also agreed to pay compensation to Tom and his family as part of an out of court settlement. Tom and his family were represented by Molly Cox at Bhatt Murphy Solicitors and Jude Bunting KC at Doughty Street Chambers. Molly Cox, Tom’s solicitor at Bhatt Murphy Solicitors, said: “Freedom of the press is fundamental to our democracy. In arresting Tom, the police prevented him from reporting on a climate protest, in essence silencing government opposition and dissent. We welcome the Chief Constable’s admission that Tom should never have been arrested, and hope that Hertfordshire and other forces have learnt from the ordeal Tom and his family have been through”.

Manchester 2017 terrorist attack – not able to sue MI5. Skripals can’t testify. There were failings by MI5 and multiple other parties…’ More than 300 people affected by the Manchester Arena bombing cannot continue their legal action against MI5, judges at a specialist tribunal have ruled. Survivors and people bereaved by the 2017 terror attack brought a case to the Investigatory Powers Tribunal (IPT) against the Security Services, claiming at a hearing earlier this month that the failure to take ‘appropriate measures’ to prevent the atrocity infringed their human rights. But in a ruling on Friday, Lord Justice Singh and Mrs Justice Farbey said the cases could not proceed as they were brought too late. Lord Justice Singh said: “We are particularly conscious of the importance of the rights concerned… We are also conscious of the horrendous impact of the atrocity on the claimants and their families. “Any reasonable person would have sympathy for them. The grief and trauma which they have suffered, particularly where young children were killed, is almost unimaginable. Nevertheless, we have reached the conclusion that, in all the circumstances, it would not be equitable to permit the claims to proceed.” The IPT is an independent judicial body which provides right of redress to anyone who believes they have been the victim of unlawful action by a public authority using covert investigative techniques. The public inquiry into the 2017 attack found the bombing might have been prevented if MI5 had acted on intelligence received in the months before when two pieces of information about the bomber, Salman Abedi, were assessed at the time by the security service to not relate to terrorism. But inquiry chairman Sir John Saunders said, having heard from MI5 witnesses at behind-closed-door hearings, he considered that did not present an ‘accurate picture’. Following publication of the inquiry’s final report last year, MI5’s Director general Ken McCallum expressed ‘deep regret’ that intelligence was not gathered which may have stopped Abedi in his tracks, and said he was ‘profoundly sorry’ that MI5 was unable to prevent it. It took almost six years for the failings of MI5 to be revealed, confirmed when the Inquiry chair published his Volume 3 findings in March 2023, in which he said MI5 had missed a ‘significant opportunity’ to prevent the attack. “This report concluded that within this six-year period, the Security Service corporate witnesses X and J gave evidence on oath that had presented an inaccurate picture, and the same inaccurate picture had been presented to Lord Anderson when he compiled his report in December 2017. Seven years have now passed since the atrocity in May 2017 – six years of that seven-year delay was caused by MI5. “This judgment certainly doesn’t exonerate MI5. There were failings by MI5 and multiple other parties leading up to and on the actual evening of 22 May 2017 and collectively we continue to support our clients in their fight for full accountability and justice.”

£500m defence cuts.  UK ministers scrap warships, helicopters, and drones in £500m defence cuts Defence secretary John Healey cancels six ‘outdated’ defence projects The defence secretary has announced emergency cuts to the UK military, including the Royal Navy’s two amphibious assault ships, a frigate and 31 helicopters. John Healey has blamed the disputed £22bn black hole left in the finances by the Tories. However, the Conservatives have warned that the cuts have come because Labour refuses to spend 2.5 per cent of GDP on defence. Mr Healey told MPs that Labour had “a dire inheritance” from the Tories in defence so needed to scrap six “outdated” defence projects which will save £500m over the next five years. “We have begun to fix the foundations going forward,” he added. “For too long our soldiers, sailors and air staff have been stuck with using outdated equipment.” The emergency statement caught MPs by surprise on Wednesday and has left doubts over whether the UK could take back the Falklands if they were invaded again. The scrapping of HMS Bulwark and HMS Albion leaves the UK without any amphibious assault ships. In addition, the frigate HMS Northumberland is beyond economic repair and will be decommissioned along with two Wave-class tankers. Mr Healey said that HMS Bulwark and HMS Albion had been “superficially retired” by Tory ministers “but kept on the books at a cost of £9m a year”. The defence secretary said that the service chiefs had agreed to his “common sense decisions which previous governments had failed to take”. He added: “These will not be the last difficult decisions I will have to take.” Thirty-one helicopters –14 Chinooks and 17 Pumas – are also to be permanently grounded. The UK’s replacement helicopter programme is still some years away. There were 294 helicopters in the armed forces last year. Also going are the Watchkeeper MK1 drones, which cost around £5m each, but have been beset by issues and will be grounded. However, Mr Healey did announce new retention payments for armed forces personnel who sign up for additional years of service. He said: “I can announce today that I am introducing, from April, a new £30,000 retention payment for a cohort of tri-service aircraft engineers who sign up for [an] additional three years of service. This will affect and be open to around 5,000 personnel in total. “And from January, a new £8,000 retention payment for army personnel who served four years, supporting 4,000 personnel each year for three years. So 12,000 troops in total.”

Peter Lynch commits suicide in prison – what he said on protest. Father-of-four rioter Peter Lynch who died in prison ‘took his own life’ while serving two years in jail for violent disorder and abusing police at anti-migrant protest A father-of-four rioter who was jailed for shouting abuse at police officers outside a hotel housing asylum seekers took his own life in prison, according to sources. Peter Lynch, 61, a father of four, died on Saturday night at HMP Moorland near Doncaster, in South Yorkshire, the prison service confirmed. Prison service sources said he took his own life, although it has not been officially confirmed. He was serving a two year and eight months prison term after being jailed in August. The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO) is now carrying out an independent investigation into his death. Lynch, who had diabetes, thyroid issues and angina, and recently suffered a heart attack, was put behind bars for screaming at police outside a hotel in Rotherham housing asylum seekers. The grandfather, who was described as a conspiracy theorist, went to the Holiday Inn Express in Manvers on August 4 waving a placard which accused police officers, MPs, Nasa, and the Environment Agency of being ‘corrupt’. During his sentencing on August 22, Lynch, who was called a ‘family man’, pleaded guilty to violent disorder after he shouted ‘racist and provocative remarks’ Lynch would have been eligible for the early release scheme which was recently introduced by Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood, reported The Telegraph. A prison service spokesman said: ‘HMP Moorland prisoner Peter Lynch died on October 19 2024. As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will investigate.’ The PPO told MailOnline: ‘The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman is carrying out an independent investigation into the death of Peter Lynch that occurred on 19 October 2024 at HMP Moorland. ‘We offer our condolences to his friends and family.’ Lynch’s sentencing hearing was told he was a ‘full participant’ in the riot and was filmed calling officers ‘scum’ after screaming: ‘You are protecting people who are killing our kids and raping them.’ Asked by Judge Jeremy Richardson KC about the meaning of the placard he was holding, Ian West, defending, said: ‘It’s a general conspiracy theory against anyone and any form of authority. This was slightly off-topic from what was going on that day.’ Judge Richardson told him: ‘You did not yourself attack any police officer, as far as can be detected, but what you did was encourage by your conduct others to behave violently and you were part of this mob.’ The father of four and grandfather of three was branded by the judge as a ‘disgraceful example of a grandfather’, reported the Guardian. ‘You were unquestionably endeavouring to rev up the situation the best you could,’ Judge Richardson added.

Reports of the strikes come after Ukraine was given permission from Washington to fire US-supplied missiles at Russian territory. The government has refused to comment on the reports for operational reasons, but officials confirmed Defence Secretary John Healey spoke to his Ukrainian counterpart on Tuesday night. Ministers are likely to exercise caution in their response to the reports due to concerns over Russia’s reaction, as well as to ensure the move is not seen as being led by the UK. In the Commons earlier, Healey said: “Ukraine’s action on the battlefield speaks for itself.” Ukraine’s Defence Minister Rustem Umerov has also declined to confirm that his country has used the Storm Shadow missiles within Russian territory, but said it was “using all the means to defend our country”. Matthew Miller, the US State Department’s spokesman, would also not comment on the use of the UK-supplied missile or whether the US was providing navigational assistance for their use. When asked by the BBC if Ukraine was consulting with or informing the US about the use of missiles provided by the UK, Mr Miller said he would not “speak publicly to the use of another country’s weapons”…

Following Putin’s nationwide address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called for a strong response from world leaders to Russia’s use of a new generation hypersonic missile, saying it was a major step up in the “scale and brutality” of the war. “The world must react. Right now there is no strong reaction from the world,” Zelensky said in a statement published on Telegram, adding: “This is an obvious and serious increase in the scale and brutality of this war.” Putin declared that Russia would issue advance warnings if it launches more strikes with such missile against Ukraine to allow civilians to evacuate to safety. And he warned that US air defense systems wouldn’t be capable of intercepting Russian missiles. Putin said the attack on Dnipro struck a missile factory a new missile called “Oreshnik,” a Russian word meaning “hazel.” “We believe that we have the right to use our weapons against military facilities of the countries that allow to use their weapons against our facilities,” he said. “And in case of escalation of aggressive actions, we will respond resolutely in a mirror way.”

The British-made missiles are being used as part of Ukraine’s fightback against Russia Ukraine has fired British-made Storm Shadow missiles into Russia for the first time. The missiles were fired into the Kursk region on Wednesday morning, in response to Russia deploying North Korean troops in its war against Ukraine, an unnamed Western official has told Bloomberg. The news follows earlier reports that the UK would likely follow the lead of the US in authorising Ukraine to use weapons they’ve supplied to strike targets in Russia. Prime Minister Keir Starmer previously told Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky that British-supplied Storm Shadow missiles can be used to strike military targets, while the US previously stood firm in their agreement that their weapons could only be used in Ukraine-owned space. Prior to the authorisation, many called on the UK government and the US to give Ukraine permission to use the long-range missiles on Russian territory. Former defence minister Mark Francois said that, without the weapons, President Zelensky’s forces were fighting with “one hand tied behind their backs” more than two years after the Russian army began its full-scale invasion. But why was there a reluctance to give the green light and what difference could these missiles make to the war?

Recently-published Foreign Office documents on its flagship aid project in Ukraine, which supports privatisation, note that the war provides “opportunities” for Ukraine delivering on “some hugely important reforms”. The government in Kyiv has in recent months been responding positively to these calls. Last month, president Volodymyr Zelensky signed a new law expanding the privatisation of state-owned banks in the country. It follows the Ukrainian government’s announcement in July of its ‘Large-Scale Privatisation 2024’ programme that is intended to drive foreign investment into the country and raise money for Ukraine’s struggling national budget, not least to fight Russia. Large assets slated for privatisation currently include the country’s biggest producer of titanium ore, a leading producer of concrete products and a mining and processing plant. Ukraine envisaged privatising the country’s roughly 3,500 state-owned enterprises in a law of 2018, which said foreign citizens and companies could become owners. The process stalled as a result of coronavirus and then Russia’s invasion in February 2022. But hundreds of smaller-scale enterprises are now being privatised, bringing in revenues of UAH 9.6bn (£181m) in the past two years. “The resumption of privatisation amid the full-scale war is an important step, which is already yielding results,” Ukraine’s economy minister Yulia Svyrydenko said last month…

Even though colonial empires are formally a thing of the past, the old methods – pressure, manipulation and interference in sovereign affairs – are still being used and simply have new forms. Britain is not an exception here, but rather a “trendsetter”. Thus, suffering from phantom pains, longing for the empire over which “the sun never sets” and feeling nostalgic for the lost dominance, Great Britain (along with its like-minded Franco-Saxon associates) resorts to blackmailing and sanctions, and overthrows unwanted regimes through “color revolutions”, with Ukraine being one of the victims of such revolutions in 2014.   And I’m saying this to show that you have no moral right to accuse and reproach my country, and will never have. We have set the goal of getting rid of the nationalist and neo-Nazi “hornet’s nest” on our borders. As long as the threats emanating from it, including the absorption of Ukraine by NATO, are not eliminated, as long as discrimination against the Russian-speaking people on the grounds of the language, faith and history is not stopped, as long as Ukraine does not stop whitewashing and glorifying Hitler’s accomplices, our special military operation will continue. Its goals will be implemented in any event – diplomatically or militarily – whatever peace plans and schemes are being developed in the West in the interests of saving the entertainment actor Zelensky and his clique. And we’ll achieve our goals regardless of the militaristic agony of the Democratic administration, which after its epic fail in the presidential elections, whereby it lost the trust of the most Americans, has issued (according to some media) suicidal “permission” to Zelensky’s regime to use long-range weapons to strike deep into Russia. Perhaps Joe Biden himself, for many reasons, has nothing left to lose, but what astonishes us is the short-sightedness of the UK and French leaders, who are rushing to play along with the outgoing administration and are dragging not only their own countries, but all of Europe into a full-scale escalation with drastic consequences. This is precisely what our former Western partners should think about before it is too late….

A nine-day-long hikoi, or peaceful march – a tradition of the Maori – was undertaken in protest against a bill that seeks to reinterpret the country’s 184-year-old founding Treaty of Waitangi, which was signed between British colonisers and the Indigenous Maori people. Experts say that the Maori came to the uninhabited islands of New Zealand from East Polynesia on canoe voyages in the 1200s. Over hundreds of years of isolation, they developed their own distinct culture and language. Maori people speak te reo Maori and have different tribes, or iwi, spread throughout the country.New Zealand became independent from the United Kingdom in 1947. However, this was after Maori people had suffered mass killings, land grabs and cultural erasure over more than 100 years at the hands of colonial settlers. There are currently 978,246 Maori in New Zealand, constituting around 19 percent of the country’s population of 5.3 million. They are represented by Te Pati Maori, or the Maori Party, which currently holds six of the 123 seats in Parliament. On February 6, 1840, the Treaty of Waitangi, also called Te Tiriti o Waitangi or just Te Tiriti, was signed between the British Crown and around 500 Maori chiefs, or rangatira. The treaty was the founding document of New Zealand and officially made New Zealand a British colony. While the treaty was presented as a measure to resolve differences between the Maori and the British, the English and te reo versions of the treaty actually feature some stark differences. The te reo Maori version guarantees “rangatiratanga” to the Maori chiefs. This translates to “self-determination” and guarantees the Maori people the right to govern themselves. However, the English translation says that the Maori chiefs “cede to Her Majesty the Queen of England absolutely and without reservation all the rights and powers of Sovereignty”, making no mention of self-rule for the Maori. The English translation does guarantee the Maori “full exclusive and undisturbed possession of their Lands and Estates Forests Fisheries”. “The English draft talks about the British settlers having full authority and control over Maori in the whole country,” Kassie Hartendorp, a Maori community organiser and director at community campaigning organisation ActionStation Aotearoa, told Al Jazeera….

Writing on social media on the day Russia invaded, she said the war could have been prevented if the US and its Western allies had recognised Russia’s “legitimate security concerns” about Ukraine’s bid to join Nato. The following month, she said it was an “undeniable fact” that there were US-funded biolabs in Ukraine that could “release and spread deadly pathogens” as she called for a ceasefire.

The former president said the plan would “reclaim our democracy from Washington once and for all” by eliminating the deep state —a supposed network of shadowy and powerful figures secretly controlling the government and a frequent feature of right-wing conspiracy theories. Although Trump repeatedly mentioned the deep state during his time in the White House, the former president said in a video earlier this year that he “wasn’t a believer” in the theory until recently. The establishment of a commission to expose the supposed network was just one element of the plan announced by his 2024 campaign on Tuesday. Here are all 10 points of the plan: Executive Order to Fire ‘Rogue Bureaucrats’ “I will immediately re-issue my 2020 executive order restoring the president’s authority to remove rogue bureaucrats,” Trump said in the video on Tuesday. “And I will wield that power very aggressively.” The executive order issued by Trump in October 2020, which was never fully implemented, established a new employment category for federal workers called “Schedule F.” Under the new category, civil servants with jobs tied to “policy-determining, policy-making, or policy-advocating” effectively lost civil service employment protection for federal employees that had been in place for more than 135 years. Trump has made it clear that he intends to reinstate the order if elected in 2024. Democrats introduced a provision to last year’s National Defense Authorization Act that would have blocked the order, but the provision was removed from the final version of the bill passed in December.

Grayzone -Gladio manuals to be republished in Ukraine – Project Alchemy Leaked files expose high-level UK military plot to destroy The Grayzone – In a bid to “keep Ukraine fighting,” a covert cell of British military strategists and spooks plotted to destroy “media outriders” that threatened their narrative. Among their top targets was The Grayzone. Leaked documents obtained by The Grayzone have revealed the existence of a British military-intelligence cabal, which plotted since the onset of the Ukraine proxy war to prolong the conflict “at all costs.” Known as Project Alchemy, the secret cell was convened under the watch of the British Ministry of Defense, and overseen by a high-ranking Lieutenant General, Charlie Stickland. As we revealed in part one of this ongoing investigative series, Project Alchemy put forward an array of highly aggressive schemes, from cyber attacks to “discreet operations” to outright terrorism inspired by notorious Operation Gladio, the Cold War-era pan-European CIA and MI6 “stay-behind” fascist terror army. Its stated objective was to “keep Ukraine fighting” for as long as possible, no matter the cost. Complementing its calls for clandestine special forces-style attacks on Russian territory, Project Alchemy proposed an aggressive propaganda blitzkrieg, under the bland banner of “information operations.” In order to manage Western public, which was likely to turn against a long war if its economic costs grew too steep, the cabal’s members whipped up a menu of malign attacks on disruptive media outlets through a campaign of legal harassment. Among the British military cabal’s top targets was this outlet, The Grayzone. Through Project Alchemy’s leaked files, we learned that the same shadowy figure who plotted to destroy this alongside London-based celebrity client journalist Paul Mason was nominated to direct the project’s information warfare campaign. He is Amil Khan, a veteran psychological warfare operative previously exposed by The Grayzone for running an array of covert propaganda operations, from astroturfing pseudo-leftist YouTube influencers to fomenting regime change from Syria to Ethiopia. Khan’s involvement in Project Alchemy suggests his crusade against this outlet was approved at the highest levels of the UK’s national security state. Underlining London’s obsession with maintaining control of the Ukraine proxy war’s narrative, The Grayzone was earmarked for destruction just days after Russian troops crossed into Ukrainian territory.

There was no immediate comment from Gallant, who was sacked as defence minister earlier this month after Netanyahu said he had lost trust in him over the management of the ongoing military operations in both Gaza and Lebanon. Israel’s main opposition leader Yair Lapid called the court move “a reward for terrorism”. Israeli airstrikes kill 88 Palestinians in northern Gaza – At least 88 Palestinians have been massacred after Israeli airstrikes pounded two districts in northern parts of the besieged Gaza Strip. During two overnight Israeli airstrikes in Gaza City on Thursday, at least 66 people were killed in Beit Lahia and 22 others, including at least 10 children, in Sheikh Radwan, local Palestinian media reported. The deadly strikes also wounded dozens of people in the targeted areas. According to reports, Israeli artillery heavily shelled Beit Lahia, while helicopters continuously fired munitions at the area. Israel has been employing an artificial intelligence firing system jointly manufactured by an Indian arms company during its ongoing genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, according to a report. Israel unleashed its bloody Gaza onslaught on October 7, 2023, after the Hamas resistance group carried out its historic operation against the usurping entity in retaliation for the regime’s intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people. The Tel Aviv regime has so far killed at least 43,985 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured 104,092 others, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. The Collective Biden: Blinken and the Spawn of Brzezinski – by Harley Schlanger On his departure from his eleventh visit to Israel since October 7, 2023, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken again displayed the naked hypocrisy that has characterized his role as a key figure in what some analysts are calling the “Collective Biden” regime.  Speaking to reporters at the airport after meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu and Israeli security leaders, Blinken said, “Since October 7, Israel has achieved most of its strategic objectives when it comes to Gaza,” referring to allegedly destroying Hamas’ leadership, with the crowning achievement being the murder of Hamas leader Sinwar — who Blinken singled out as the “main obstacle” to a peaceful resolution — and degrading its military capacity. “Now is the time to turn these successes into an enduring strategic success. And there are really two things left to do — get the hostages home, and bring the war to an end, with an understanding of what will follow.” He neglected to mention that these are the same goals he had defined since the initial Hamas attack, which had been the supposed subject of his previous ten shuttles in a year to the region. Further, to describe as “successes” the murder of more than 42,300 Palestinians, the destruction of 55% of the buildings in Gaza, and most of the hospitals and medical facilities there, leaves the distinct impression that he is referring to success in committing genocide. He added that this means that now there exists the “opportunity to end the war, to keep Hamas out, and make sure Israel does not stay….We fully reject any reoccupation of Gaza.” As Blinken was hyping the hoped-for success of his mission, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) continued a brutal campaign in northern Gaza, which has killed more than 600 Palestinians in seventeen days, while targeting hospitals near the Jabaliya refugee camp that is under assault. And while he adamantly asserted the Biden administration’s insistence that reoccupation must be rejected, members of Netanyahu’s cabinet, including National Security Minister Ben-Gvir, and his Likud party, attended a settler’s movement rally at which Daniella Weiss, a leader of the movement, stated their goal is to “settle the entire Gaza Strip, not just a part of it, not just a few settlements, the entire Gaza Strip from north to south.”

Stoltenberg, 65, stepped down from his post as head of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization last month. He served as a head of NATO for 10 years. He is also a former prime minister of Norway, his home country, representing the Labor Party. Jens Stoltenberg will also be the next chair of the Munich Security Conference, a role he will start in February 2025. The official website for Bilderberg meetings refers to Stoltenberg as incoming co-chair.

Senedd members voted 26 votes to 19 against the motion. The Welsh First Minister, Eluned Morgan and Secretary for Health and Social Care, Jeremy Miles, both voted against the motion. There was opposition from Senedd members from all major parties including Labour, Liberal Democrats, Plaid Cymru and the Conservatives. The power to introduce assisted suicide is not devolved to Wales but is reserved to Westminster. Assisted suicide campaigners appear to have brought forward the motion with the expectation that they would have the numbers to win the vote on the motion and be able to claim that there was overwhelming support from the Welsh Parliament for Kim Leadbeater’s assisted suicide Bill, which is currently before the House of Commons. BDS movement: Lessons from the South Africa boycott Those who led UK’s Anti-Apartheid Movement reflect on what new legislation means for latest generation of boycotters. Parallels have been drawn with the Thatcher government’s approach towards those who lobbied for sanctions on the apartheid-era South African government during the 1980s. “An obvious comparison [with BDS] is that of the Anti-Apartheid Movement [AAM] in the 1980s,” said Andrew Smith of the Campaign Against Arms Trade. The AAM was the primary body that advocated for the boycott of South African goods. “Throughout the 1960s to 1980s, more than 100 local authorities decided to ban South African goods from their offices and schools,” Smith explained. “In 1981, Strathclyde [in Scotland] went one step further by announcing an end to pension fund investments from companies with South African subsidiaries and banning South African sports teams from its playing fields.” Strathclyde’s local council was soon joined by Cambridge, Newcastle and Glasgow, as well as most inner London boroughs. By 1985, more than 120 local councils had engaged in some form of anti-apartheid protest. Approximately two-thirds of the UK population lived in local authorities that supported the AAM. “I can’t imagine any sitting ministers suggesting that any of these boycotts were with hindsight wrong or suggesting that they increased community tensions or led to council tax increases,” Smith added. A message from the Anti-Apartheid Movement Al Jazeera asked former members of the AAM who were heavily involved with the boycott movement against South Africa from the 1960s until the 1990s what they think of the new law. Lord Hughes, a British Labour politician and the chairman of the AAM from 1975 until 1995, when it was disbanded, said: “I fully support Israel’s right to exist, despite its deficiencies. Nevertheless, as someone who successfully moved a boycott of South African goods in 1962 when a member of Aberdeen City Council, I fully support the right to use a boycott as a legitimate expression of those who oppose Israel.” “The AAM used a variety of methods to oppose the apartheid regime, which in the end did lead to its downfall,” he said, adding: “Boycotting was a very effective propaganda tool.”

Isaac’s article on St. Paul’s and Malcolm X centre This Neighbourhood Fights Apartheid by Isaac Kneebone-Hopkins In the 1980s, a black working-class area of Bristol became an ‘apartheid free zone’. Their community ban on racist institutions inspired thousands — and created a model to be used for today’s fight for Palestinian freedom. In 1985, St. Paul’s in Bristol, a predominantly black working-class community, initiated the grassroots St. Paul’s Apartheid-Free Zone Campaign (SPAFZ) as an offshoot of the Anti-Apartheid Movement group (AAM). SPAFZ aimed to eliminate apartheid goods in the area through community organising and building a campaign that would later serve as a nationwide model. Jagun Akinshegun, chair of SPAFZ, describes the campaign’s simple and emotive logic: ‘You hit people where it hurts because you hit their economy, which means they won’t have the money to buy arms to turn on the people.’ The strategy was similarly straightforward: contact all St. Paul’s shopkeepers, use persuasion and leaflets detailing apartheid connections to gain buy-in, and secure signatures on a campaign statement. This commitment, publicised in newsletters, bound shopkeepers to remove South African goods with regular spot-checks. Every one of the twenty-seven local businesses in the area signed up. Gerard Omasta-Milsom, a former Bristol student activist turned AAM national organiser, explains the campaign’s dual structure, emphasising how local activism helped support the ANC’s demand for international sanctions. ‘It made it quite straightforward for the AAM to regard its role as implementing that,’ he says. Maintaining a visible presence, the campaign also organised public events like picketing, vigils, apartheid-free breakfasts, and public meetings with African National Congress (ANC) representatives, all of which enhanced community engagement. Expanding beyond local businesses, a SPAFZ campaign letter influenced the Southwest Co-operative Wholesale Society boycott, leading to a nationwide boycott across the society’s 1000 stores in October 1985. Major General Joseph Garba of the United Nations visits St Paul’s Apartheid Free Zone. Encouraged by this success, the campaign went on to target larger retailers. After just three weeks of campaigning, including a petition, letter-writing, and weekly pickets of sixty-plus people, the Tesco store in Bristol’s Eastville became the first Tesco in the country to boycott South African goods in June 1986.

Organisers said it stopped Robinson’s supporters building momentum on the far right. Robinson was remanded in police custody on Friday, and his supporters gathered today in numbers of up to 25,000. They chanted Robinson’s name alongside several racist and Islamophobic chants including “who the f*ck is Allah”, “Muslim paedos off our streets” and “stop the boats”. Speakers on Robinson’s demonstration included former leader of the fascist PEGIDA street movement, Lutz Bachmann, who was forced to stand down as leader after a photo surfaced of him imitating Hitler. In 2018, the government denied his entry to Britain due to his history of cocaine dealing and incitement to racial hatred charges. The counter demonstration, kept apart by a heavy police presence, heard from speakers including Jeremy Corbyn, Diane Abbott and John McDonnell plus trade union general secretaries. The Stand Up to Racism protest was called under the slogan “Stop Tommy Robinson, stop the far right” and many of the speeches, placards and chants at the event were against the far right and in support of refugees.

Rachel Reeves has now tried to reboot the growth agenda with her Mansion House speech on Thursday night. Her mission is to boost the amount UK private pension funds invest in UK private markets and infrastructure. Her problem is that simply making a speech is not enough. And many, many pensioners do not want the Government telling them how their money is to be invested. There were some parts of the Chancellor’s approach that do make sense. She is building on the reforms I started as pensions minister, and Jeremy Hunt brought forward in the summer of 2023 with the Mansion House Compact. That compact stated that 5pc of the default pension funds would be invested into unlisted equities in the UK by 2030. Rachel Reeves has decided that this is not enough. Her decision to force local authority pension schemes to merge is fine in principle, and seeks to emulate the Canadian and Australian example. Greater size will potentially save administration costs and definitely increase buying power. But local authorities are responsible for over 5m local government pensions: many of those members want their own democratically elected authority investing as they see fit. With forced mergers, that influence is massively diminished.

Israel murders Palestinian Dr Adnan Al-Bursh in prison – Sky News can reveal new information about the death of one of Gaza’s best-known doctors – who died earlier this year while in Israeli prison. Testimony from an inmate at the prison where Dr Adnan Al-Bursh died has detailed claims about the moments leading up to his death. The surgeon documented the early months of the war between Hamas and Israel on his phone as he continued to work in northern Gaza before being detained by Israeli forces. Sky’s John Sparks has been speaking to those who saw him in his final days. The Israel Defence Forces say Dr Adnan Al-Bursh “did not die under the responsibility of the IDF”. The Israel Prison Service says “no such events have occurred under IPS responsibility.” ‘He was the light of my life and I lost him’: How a famous surgeon died in an Israeli prison after being taken from Gaza hospital When war in Gaza erupted last year, Dr Adnan Al-Bursh worked around the clock while documenting the horror unfolding around him. Then he was detained. Now, Sky News has spoken to people who claim to have witnessed the circumstances leading to his death. In April, the surgeon was taken to an incarceration facility near Jerusalem called Ofer Prison. He died shortly after his arrival. News of the surgeon’s death was announced in a statement from two Palestinian prisoner support associations at the beginning of May. The Israelis offered no explanation or cause of death. Sky News has spoken to people who claim to have witnessed the moments before Dr Al-Bursh’s death. A prisoner, who says he previously knew Dr Al-Bursh in Gaza, provided details in a deposition to lawyers from the Israeli human rights organisation HaMoked. “In mid-April 2024, Dr Adnan Al-Bursh arrived at Section 23 in Ofer Prison. The prison guards brought Dr Adnan Al-Bursh into the section in a deplorable state. He had clearly been assaulted with injuries around his body. He was naked in the lower part of his body. “The prison guards threw him in the middle of the yard and left him there. Dr Adnan Al-Bursh was unable to stand up. One of the prisoners helped him and accompanied him to one of the rooms. A few minutes later, prisoners were heard screaming from the room they went into, declaring Dr Adnan Al-Bursh (was dead).” While some people might suggest that Dr Adnan Al-Bursh was a terrorist, Daqqa said: “If you want to formally answer this question, he was not charged until now. And many of these detainees are not charged from Gaza.” In a statement to Sky News, a spokesman for the Israel Prison Service said: “IPS is a law enforcement organisation that operates according to the provisions of the law and under the supervision of the state comptroller and many other official critiques.

Core Principles of Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) The central idea of modern monetary theory (MMT) is that governments with a fiat currency system under their control can and should print—or create with a few keystrokes in today’s digital age—as much money as they need to spend because they cannot go broke or be insolvent unless a political decision to do so is taken. We must remember that money is debt, and debt is created by bank lending. We must also remember that fiat currency is not backed by any form of asset. It is not linked to gold or silver or anything else. It is simply a government promise to pay that gives a fiat currency its value. And what we’re talking about is how money of that type is created by the government and how that money created by the government functions within the economy of which we’re all a part. Most of the time, most of economics tries to ignore this issue. It pretends, in many cases, that money hardly exists, which is quite absurd….

They represented the old industries that used to dominate the city. Many have names which are easy to recognise, such as the Butchers, who can trace their beginnings back to the year 975, and the Fishmongers. Others bear the names of lost trades, like the Mercers and Bowyers, who traded cloth and made longbows. All would set standards for their goods and often held exclusive rights over their trade in the city, thus wielding political power. Probably the most famous guild member, Sir Richard (Dick) Whittington, left his fortune for the Mercers to run, for the benefit of the city The other side of their work was welfare and charity: funerals for deceased members, hospitals, and homes for the poor. Today, they sit on billions of pounds of assets, donated by members over many centuries, including the fortune of Dick Whittington, the former lord mayor. They were ordered as long ago as 1884, after a Royal Commission’s investigation, to spend more on the public good or risk their existence, external. But did they? And are they now?

Together, they are bigger landowners in the city than supermarket chain Sainsbury’s or the National Grid. Seven nuclear reactors to power Google’s AI ambitions – Google announced on Tuesday that it has signed a deal with nuclear energy startup Kairos Power to purchase 500 megawatts of “new 24/7 carbon-free power” from seven of the company’s small modular reactors (SMRs). The companies are reportedly looking at an initial delivery from the first SMR in 2030 and a full rollout by 2035. “The grid needs new electricity sources to support AI technologies that are powering major scientific advances, improving services for businesses and customers, and driving national competitiveness and economic growth,” Michael Terrell, Google’s senior director of Energy and Climate, wrote in a Google Blog on Tuesday. “This agreement helps accelerate a new technology to meet energy needs cleanly and reliably, and unlock the full potential of AI for everyone.” Terrell argues that the adoption of nuclear power will complement the company’s existing solar power and wind power investments and help it achieve its net-zero energy goals. He also touts nuclear energy as a source of high-paying, long-term jobs, citing a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) estimate that building out to 200 gigawatts of capacity by 2050 will require an additional 375,000 workers. Google is far from the only major tech company eyeing nuclear energy as the answer to its AI power problems. Amazon Web Services purchased a 960-megawatt data center campus from Houston-based Talen Energy in March for a sum of $650 million. In September, Microsoft announced that it is working to restart Unit 1 at New York’s Three Mile Island in an effort to power its AI data centers. That same month, Oracle announced that it is designing a 1-gigawatt data center that will be powered by a trio of small nuclear reactors. “The location and the power place we’ve located, they’ve already got building permits for three nuclear reactors,” Oracle CEO Larry Ellison said during a quarterly investors call. “These are the small modular nuclear reactors to power the data center. This is how crazy it’s getting. This is what’s going on.” Kairos is also facing increasing competition from other small modular reactor manufacturers. Westinghouse, for example, is currently testing a micro reactor that can run 24/7 for five years without needing to be refueled. Given the astronomical energy (and cooling) requirements of today’s frontier AI models, these advancements can’t come soon enough.

Gabbard, however, has accused the hundreds of thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters of being puppets of a “radical Islamist organisation”, in an apparent reference to Hamas. The pro-Israel views of Gabbard are not dissimilar from those of many Democrats. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has also accused pro-Palestinian protesters of being financed by foreign groups. But in many instances, Gabbard has set herself apart from Democrats and embraced the full-throttle support of Israel of the Republican Party. In 2015, she spoke at the Christians United for Israel (CUFI) conference, a major right-wing and Christian pro-Israel organisation based in the US, where she lauded the US-Israel relationship. Despite all of her anti-war and anti-US intervention views, Gabbard has supported Israel’s war on Gaza, which has killed more than 40,000 Palestinians, the majority of whom are women and children. Even though she has supported ending US military support to foreign governments for helping fuel conflicts and wars, she doesn’t extend that call to Israel and also opposed a ceasefire in Gaza. According to a 2019 analysis by The Intercept, more than 100 individuals affiliated with the Hindu nationalist Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) organisation have donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to Gabbard’s political campaigns since 2011, when she first ran for Congress. She has also praised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and claimed that there was “a lot of misinformation” around the 2002 Gujarat riots that took place while Modi served as Gujarat’s chief minister. A BBC documentary released last year revealed a previously unpublished report by British diplomats that concluded Modi was “directly responsible” for the “climate of impunity” that enabled the violence, in which around 2,000 people were killed in pogroms against the Muslim community.

In 2017, the Indian Government dialed back Gates’ vaccine regimen and evicted Gates and his cronies from the NAB. Polio paralysis rates dropped precipitously. In 2010, the Gates Foundation funded a trial of a GSK’s experimental malaria vaccine, killing 151 African infants and causing serious adverse effects including paralysis, seizure, and febrile convulsions to 1,048 of the 5,049 children. During Gates 2002 MenAfriVac Campaign in Sub-Saharan Africa, Gates operatives forcibly vaccinated thousands of African children against meningitis. Between 50-500 children developed paralysis. In 2010, Gates committed $10 billion to the WHO promising to reduce population, in part, through new vaccines. A month later Gates told a Ted Talk that new vaccines “could reduce population”. In 2014, Kenya’s Catholic Doctors Association accused the WHO of chemically sterilizing millions of unwilling Kenyan women with a phony “tetanus” vaccine campaign. Independent labs found the sterility formula in every vaccine tested. After denying the charges, WHO finally admitted it had been developing the sterility vaccines for over a decade. Similar accusations came from Tanzania, Nicaragua, Mexico and the Philippines….

The study, published Tuesday in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, evaluated nearly 300 sets of mothers and children in Mexico and tested the children twice for cognitive development over the course of 12 years. Fluoride is not added to public water supplies in Mexico, but people are exposed through naturally occurring fluoride in water and fluoridated salt and supplements. The study found a drop in scores on intelligence testsfor every 0.5 milligram-per-liter increase in fluoride exposure beyond 0.8 milligrams per liter found in urine. However, although the researchers found a potential connection to a child’s exposure to fluoride in utero, they found no significant influence from fluoride exposure on brain development once a child was born. “Childhood exposure to fluoride is safer than prenatal. There is pretty good science now to support the fact that the fetal system tends to be more sensitive to environmental toxicants than once the child is born,” said the study’s lead author, Howard Hu, founding dean of the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto. The authors measured fluoride exposure for the Mexican mothers and their children by looking at the chemical content in their urine. “Since we’re using an integrated biological marker, it will give you a fairly standardized measure,” Hu explained. Previous studies measured fluoride exposure by analyzing it in the environment, such as in water. On average, the researchers found that the mothers had 0.90 milligrams per liter of fluoride in their urine. Currently, there have been no such measurements for pregnant American women. There are similar measurements from a study in Poland that found healthy pregnant women to have fluoride levels just less than what was found in the Mexican women. “The levels in this population that were measured in urine were high, but not crazy high,” said Linda Birnbaum, director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Birnbaum was not involved in the study.

A gang ‘armed with a baseball bat and machete viciously attacked’ leafletters, including a relative, of a General Election candidate who were out canvassing in Sutton Coldfield. Wajad Burkey has now suspended his campaign and said he fears for his own life after the shocking incident. One man was beaten and left with head injuries in the brutal attack. Police are now hunting the culprits. The attack took place while three people were canvassing in Beaconsfield Road, Sutton Coldfield, on Sunday evening. Mr Burkey, representing the George Galloway-fronted Workers Party in Sutton Coldfield, told BirminghamLive: “[They] were leafleting for me when a gang of eight men turned up with baseball bats and machetes – they started beating [them up]. [One] has head injuries and is now in Heartlands hospital.” As a result of the shocking incident, Mr Burkey said: “I have suspended my campaign as I am fearful frankly for my life.” James Giles, who is standing in Hodge Hill and Solihull North for the Workers’ Party and who is helping coordinate local campaigns, described it as a heinous attack and an affront to democracy. “I hope candidates from all parties will immediately condemn this heinous attack and the police use the full force of the law to bring the perpetrators to account.”

At the time of writing, with many more votes still to be counted, Harris has 69 million votes, more than 12 million below the 81.2 million votes Biden had in 2020. Trump is currently at 72.6 million, less than 2 million away from the 74.2 million votes the Republican received in the 2020 election. Still, even with the remaining votes yet to be counted, Harris is set to fall short of Biden’s tally four years ago. The race between Biden and Trump saw record-breaking voter turnout, with more than 158 million ballots cast for all presidential candidates across the country. The total number of votes cast in the 2024 race looks set to fall below this, which could partially explain the drop-off in support for Harris. Millions of voters could still be added to Harris’ total when the Democratic stronghold of California, which is currently on 55 percent reporting, concludes its counting.

I shan’t be satisfied till I have seen them all settled overseas. In this country in 15 or 20 years’ time the black man will have the whip hand over the white man.” I can already hear the chorus of execration. How dare I say such a horrible thing? How dare I stir up trouble and inflame feelings by repeating such a conversation? The answer is that I do not have the right not to do so. Here is a decent, ordinary fellow Englishman, who in broad daylight in my own town says to me, his Member of Parliament, that his country will not be worth living in for his children. I simply do not have the right to shrug my shoulders and think about something else. What he is saying, thousands and hundreds of thousands are saying and thinking – not throughout Great Britain, perhaps, but in the areas that are already undergoing the total transformation to which there is no parallel in a thousand years of English history. In 15 or 20 years, on present trends, there will be in this country three and a half million Commonwealth immigrants and their descendants. That is not my figure. That is the official figure given to parliament by the spokesman of the Registrar General’s Office. There is no comparable official figure for the year 2000, but it must be in the region of five to seven million, approximately one-tenth of the whole population, and approaching that of Greater London. Of course, it will not be evenly distributed from Margate to Aberystwyth and from Penzance to Aberdeen. Whole areas, towns and parts of towns across England will be occupied by sections of the immigrant and immigrant-descended population. As time goes on, the proportion of this total who are immigrant descendants, those born in England, who arrived here by exactly the same route as the rest of us, will rapidly increase. Already by 1985 the native-born would constitute the majority. It is this fact which creates the extreme urgency of action now, of just that kind of action which is hardest for politicians to take, action where the difficulties lie in the present but the evils to be prevented or minimised lie several parliaments ahead….

Describing it as a “blot on the landscape” built with “no evidence” that bats were at risk from the trains, Sir Jon Thompson said: “This shed, you’re not going to believe this, cost more than £100m.” Thompson, questioned at an industry conference about the huge costs of building HS2, said the railway’s budget was driven partly by legal constraints and the demands of conflicting agencies, as well as government indecision, with more than 8,000 different permits needed along the route. He gave the example of the Sheephouse Wood bat protection structure, adding: “We call it a shed.” Thompson told the Rail Industry Association conference in London: “To build a railway between Euston and Curzon Street in Birmingham, I need 8,276 consents from other public bodies, planning, transport, the Environment Agency or Natural England. They don’t care whether parliament did or didn’t approve building a railway.” He said the “bat shed” was his favourite example of the problems caused. The Bechstein’s bat was “generally pretty available in most of northern Europe, western Europe”, he said. “But nevertheless, under the Wildlife Act, 1981, it’s deemed to be a protected species in the UK, this bat, even though there’s lots of them.” The bat is rare in the UK and deemed to be “vulnerable” in Europe, according to the IUCN conservation network’s red list.

When it was built in the 1960s, as an office for British Petroleum, it was the tallest building completed in the square mile since St Paul’s Cathedral in 1710. Today, the tower near Moorgate station is again leading the market in City real estate — but in a different way. Brookfield, the Canadian investment group, last month put Citypoint on the market, seeking offers over £500mn. If it sells, it would be the largest office building to change hands in the City in more than two years. The hiatus in dealmaking has been the main outward symptom of a downturn in commercial real estate that began after interest rates started to rise in March 2022. Higher rates make the debt that is the lifeblood of real estate deals much more expensive. Prices across commercial property, a category that includes shops, offices, hotels and warehouses, have fallen about 20 per cent from their peak in 2022, analysts estimate. But predictions of a crash akin to the one that followed the 2008-10 financial crisis have so far not materialised. Relatively few buildings in distress have surfaced, and only a handful of lenders have been hit by bad loans. Standard monopolized the petroleum industry during the 1870s by cartelizing the stage of production where entry was difficult – petroleum transportation. Standard enforced the transportation cartel by shifting its refinery shipments among railroads to stabilize individual railroad market shares at collusively agreed on levels. This method of cartel policing was effective because Standard possessed a dominant share of refining, a dominance made possible with the assistance of the railroads. The railroads facilitated Standard’s refinery acquisitions and prevented new refiner entry by charging disadvantageously high rates to non-Standard refiners. While Standard used its dominant position in refining to sell refined product at a monopoly price and to purchase crude oil at a monopsony price, Standard did not possess independent market power in refining. The Pentagon Press Secretary, Major General Pat Ryder, announced on November 1, 2024, that the Department of Defense had ordered the deployment of new fighter squadrons, tanker aircraft, B-52 long-range strategic bombers, and Arleigh Burke-class destroyers equipped with Aegis ballistic missile defense systems. According to Air & Space Forces Magazine, the combat aircraft deployment will consist of six B-52 bombers and a squadron of F-15E Strike Eagle fighters. The US Central Command confirmed the arrival of B-52 Stratofortress strategic bombers from the 5th Bomb Wing of Minot Air Force Base in its area of responsibility on November 3, 2024. They will likely operate from Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar. “[Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin] continues to make clear that should Iran, its partners, or its proxies use this moment to target American personnel or interests in the region, the United States will take every measure necessary to defend our people,” Ryder concluded. These deployments are expected to begin arriving in the region in the coming months following the departure of the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group. The latter was deployed to the region in August 2024 as part of a larger strategic response to regional threats.
