Part One – Local and National News Review

Dr Judith Brown joins Tony and Martin to discuss hidden political, financial and media power and deceptive agenda of what she calls today’s ‘De-carbonisation Industrial Complex’. Hottest day ever allegedly recorded on the planet this week. UN Chief, Guterres, on what he sees as the present dangers of man-made climate change. Whilst it’s been an exceptionally cold couple of summer weeks in Bristol…. Humanity suffering from ‘extreme heat epidemic,’ UN chief warns Humanity is suffering from an “extreme heat epidemic,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned Thursday, calling for action to limit the impacts of heat waves intensified by climate change. “Billions of people are facing an extreme heat epidemic — wilting under increasingly deadly heat waves, with temperatures topping 50 degrees Celsius around the world,” he said. “That’s 122 degrees Fahrenheit. And halfway to boiling.” According to the European Copernicus network, July 21, 22 and 23 were the three hottest days ever recorded worldwide, with July 22 holding the absolute record of 17.16 degrees Celsius (62.9 degrees Fahrenheit). Guterres repeated his call for humanity to fight its “addiction” to fossil fuels. “Today, our focus is on the impact of extreme heat. But let’s not forget that there are many other devastating symptoms of the climate crisis: ever-more fierce hurricanes. Floods. Droughts. Wildfires. Rising sea levels. And the list goes on,” he said. “To tackle all these symptoms, we need to fight the disease. And the disease is the madness of incinerating our only home. The disease is the addiction to fossil fuels. The disease is climate inaction,” he stressed, calling in particular on G20 countries to take action. While 2023 was the hottest year on record, and 2024 could set a new record, temperatures well above 40C (104F) are increasingly common. In the space of a year, the 50C threshold has even been exceeded in at least 10 places, from Death Valley in the United States (53.9C on July 7) to Agadir in Morocco, and also in China and India. The intense heat, often less visible than other devastating impacts of climate change such as storms or floods, is nonetheless more deadly. Judith recently completed an online course on climate science by David Siegal who is also a cryptocurrency and blockchain entrepreneur, as advertised on UK Column.

‘Banking Nature’ 2014 documentary by Sandrine Feydel and Denis Delestrac – carbon credits and offsetting pros and cons – land for growing trees taken off poor indigenous people. Drax power station security. Directed by Denis Delestrac and Sandrine Feydel “Buying landscapes, protecting landscapes, accumulating new landscapes-it’s a phenomenal opportunity.” -Steve Morgan, CEO, Wildlands Inc. BANKING NATURE is a film about the growing movement to monetize the natural world: to turn endangered species and threatened areas into instruments of profit. It’s a worldview that posits capital and markets as the planet’s salvation-turning nature into “natural capital.” In this view, the best way to protect endangered species and habitats is to assign them dollar values and measure the “ecosystem services” they provide. These services can then be converted into securitized financial products. The results can be grotesque. In Uganda, we meet men who measure trees to determine how much carbon they store-and a banker from the German firm that sells the resulting carbon credits. Meanwhile, in Brazil, steel giant Vale destroys rainforest, replaces it with tree plantations, and reaps the benefits of environmental credits.A Can we trust the same people whose mismanagement of the mortgage market led to a global economic meltdown to safeguard nature, by turning it into financial instruments for speculators?

ITV – new coal mine planning latest at Whitehaven, Cumbria – court case. High Court hearing over controversial Whitehaven coal mine decision concludes Campaign groups say the original decision to approve the mine in 2022 was “unlawful”. A High Court hearing into two legal challenges against plans for a controversial coal mine in west Cumbria has concluded. Planning permission was granted by the then Secretary of State for Communities, Michael Gove, for the Woodhouse Colliery site in December 2022, which was set to be the first new coal mine in the UK in 30 years. Campaign groups South Lakes Action on Climate Change and Friends of the Earth launched legal challenges, claiming that Mr Gove “failed to account for the significant climate impacts of the mine”, rendering the decision unlawful. The department had been due to defend the claim, but on July 11, Friends of the Earth said the Government had withdrawn its defence and would no longer defend the claims. The hearing before Mr Justice Holgate concluded around midday with a decision in writing expected at a later date. Environmental campaigners gathered outside the High Court in London today. Credit: ITV Border News Outside the High Court, in London, environmental campaigners gathered to show their support. Among them was Maggie Mason from South Lakes on Climate Change. She said: “It’s been so gruelling, it’s been a really, really tiring three days, but to be honest it’s at the end of a fairly tiring five years. “We really felt we had to do it, we had to put the effort in because there are local harms. “There are harms to Cumbria, there are harms to the whole globe.” The lawyers for the developers, West Cumbria Mining, have been defending the decision. They argued that the mine’s emissions will be overall net zero. They put forward the principle of ‘substitution’, meaning that if the coal is being extracted in Cumbria, it isn’t being extracted elsewhere. If the coal was being extracted in the US, for example, then emissions would be higher because it would be transported further.

Technology to track people’s carbon usage. London Climate Resistance Review – home owners charged per metre of driveway. Clean air zones. Buses axed in Bristol  From contact tracing to carbon footprint tracking: WEF’s carrot or stick approach to COVID & climate policy With digital ID and CBDC, it would be easy to turn carbon footprint measurement into enforcement under a social credit system: perspective The World Economic Forum’s (WEF) carrot or stick approach to climate policies is virtually the same as it was for COVID. From COVID contact tracing and vaccine passports to carbon footprint tracking and measuring, the end goal is practically identical — to develop the technological foundation to track and trace every person and object on the planet in order to incentivize, coerce, or otherwise manipulate individual human behavior. Take the latest WEF Annual Meeting of the New Champions, aka “Summer Davos,” that took place in China last month as the latest example of unelected globalists trying to nudge people towards changing their behavior by tracking the carbon footprints of the products they use. Speaking during a session called “How to Stay Within Planetary Boundaries — Carrot or Stick?” Ma Jun, the director of the Chinese NGO Institute of Public and Environmental affairs, said that the Chinese people were aware of tangible things like air and water pollution that they could experience with their own senses, but were less aware of climate issues (i.e. their carbon footprints), which were less tangible, but that measuring carbon footprints could be the solution. “On the climate side [China] is still lagging behind regions like Europe […] which can support very, very tough public policy on the climate side” Ma Jun, WEF, 2023 “In China, people’s awareness on the ecological side and on the pollution control side is much higher than the climate side,” said Jun, adding, “On the climate side, it’s still not quite there. We’re still lagging behind, say, regions like Europe, which can have such a high level of public awareness, which can support very, very tough public policy on the climate side.” China had one of the toughest, most Orwellian responses to COVID while simultaneously rounding up its Uighur population for internment in “re-education camps,” but this man is saying that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) can’t support tough policies on climate? At any rate, Jun went on to explain, “In China, the government have created this 30-60 commitment, but people haven’t really linked their daily lives with that, so how do we create those links? “It’s not like smog; it’s not as palpable as the water pollution and air pollution, so we need to create those [links].”…

Financial institutions should own homes, not people! Keith Cowling, Chair of PRSC who kicked this show out on a thin ‘transphobia’ pretext last month and Chair of Community Land Trust, was himself kicked out of Matlock, Derbyshire for manipulating local community groups and causing division. Infiltrating leftie groups and removing good people is his speciality. Keith explains how it’s not desirable to own your house. he wants you dependent on paying rent, so you can be evicted, Social housing. Keith is a bully in the chair of a board and in now way tries to tease out the best of those around him. He instead runs a coterie of ‘favourites’ bullying out those who question him until he has surrounded himself with sycophants or others who think like he does. A truly toxic individual who tries to come across as caring but, as with BBC and BCfm’s Pat Hart, it just doesn’t wash because he is a fake  individual whose selfishness is barely disguised.

Now Industry has been destroyed anarcho-capitalists are waging War on Agriculture – more money for solar farms £1000/acre than crops £150/acre. Net Zero 2030 – less farm animals. CMA says profit margins too high on energy. Glenn Beck podcast – The War on Farmers. Now the UK has been fully de-industrialised it’s time to destroy farming and farmers, so private equity can buy their land up cheap – Farm profits slumped by 19% in 2023, says Defra report Eastern Daily Press 20th July 2024 Farm profitability fell by 19pc across the country last year, according to the latest government figures – illustrating the ongoing financial volatility in the sector. Defra’s Total Income from Farming (TIFF) is a measure of the total profit from all UK farming businesses in a calendar year. The figure for England in 2023 was £4.5bn, a fall of £1.1bn from 2022. Defra says this decrease was mainly due to a 13.1pc fall in the value of crop outputs, which dropped by £1.5bn to £9.9bn. “Low commodity prices combined with a poor yield resulted in substantial decreases in the value of many crop items, with wheat seeing the largest decrease at £1.2bn less than in 2022,” says the report. These decreases follow a spike in 2022, when high global costs pushed up commodity prices due to the war in Ukraine. Farming leaders said the latest statistics demonstrated the “volatile environment” in which food growers have been trying to make a living in recent years. National Farmers’ Union (NFU) president Tom Bradshaw, who farms near Colchester, said: “We have moved from high commodity prices and soaring production costs in 2022 caused by the tragic situation in Ukraine, to much lower income figures in a weather-affected 2023, as commodity prices fell but production costs remained high.” He added that, since the survey ended, farmers have been struggling with record levels of rain and flooding which has contributed to a “huge drop in confidence among farmers and put a real question mark over this year’s harvest”. “While farmers are well used to dealing with variation year on year, the volatility we’ve seen in the last few years isn’t sustainable,” he said. “Food security is national security, and that’s why we need the new government to be prioritising food production in its policy-making.” Defra’s figures show agriculture’s overall contribution to England’s economy also dipped by £1bn to £10bn last year, an 8.7pc fall compared with 2022. Total livestock output in 2023 remained at £12.4bn, but there was a small increase in income from diversification, which rose from £1.321bn to £1.393bn.

EDF at Hinkley C nuclear power station want to off-set by ‘re-seaing’ some of the Somerset levels. Government plan to ‘re-sea’ North Somerset | Neil Parish | Farming Britain – For rewilding on steroids, look at Somerset. The government believes that nuclear power station Hinkley Point will kill ‘800 acres worth’ of fish. It wants owner EDF to offset that by flooding 800 acres of land with sea water. It wants EDF to re-sea the land.  Experts say Hinkley Point C saltmarsh plan won’t save fish ENVIRONMENTAL campaigners have accused EDF of ‘deliberately avoiding’ taking measures to prevent the killing of millions of fish at Hinkley Point C. The accusations come after EDF revealed plans to install an 800-acre wetland reserve near Bridgwater at Pawlett Hams as an alternative to an acoustic fish deterrent system. The previously proposed system would have used 280 speakers to make noise ‘louder than a jumbo jet’ 24-hours a day for 60 years in order to stop fish from swimming into the plant’s cooling water system, and consequently being injured or killed. According to Fish Guidance Systems, who specialise in manufacturing equipment for such measures, fish under threat include cod and whiting, while migratory species such as Atlantic salmon and shad will have a 90% death rate if trapped in the nuclear processing. The group of experts say EDF now plans to ask for an IROPI (Imperative Reasons of Overriding Public Interest) to determine it should not have to pay for the system, as it argues it would further delay the completion of Hinkley and hold up the UK’s net zero plans. The group also said EDF’s plans to develop salt marshes and wetlands nearby have not been researched in detail, or agreed with the relevant authorities. Dr David Lambert, Managing Director of Fish Guidance Systems said: “This in no way compensates for the enormous loss to the environment and ecosystem. “‘Like for like’ replacement is not achievable or scientifically possible. “Proposed measures will not replace the lost fish. “The Welsh government has previously estimated that 185 million fish a year could be killed – this is utterly unconscionable. “Given the January announcement that Hinkley Point C won’t now be up and running until at least 2031, they have plenty of time to explore options which would prevent unnecessary fish deaths and to look at developments in technology, which will absolutely refute all of their arguments.” Fish Guidance Systems also refuted claims by EDF that the acoustic fish deterrent would create a noise ‘louder than a jumbo jet’ – Dr Lambert said this claim was utterly untrue and that it will not impact any residents along the shore of the River Severn. An online public consultation on the plans has been open since Tuesday, January 9, and will close on Thursday, February 29 – feedback can be submitted via the Hinkley Point C website.

Farmer’s protest in Cardiff – Farms Not Factories film. Rollout of DEFRA’s SFI payment schemes causing ‘widespread uncertainty’ for farmers – report The changes have come at a time when extreme weather, market conditions and sudden rises in input costs are putting farms under immense pressure. Chopping and changing of schemes and initiatives is making is difficult for farmers, the National Audit Office has warned (Steve Parsons/PA) The rollout of new payment schemes for farmers is causing “widespread uncertainty and risks” for the sector, the National Audit Office has warned. The Farming and Countryside Programme aims to transition the UK’s agriculture sector post-Brexit to ensure profitable farms, food security and environmental health by 2028. Recommended by Under the scheme, the Environment Department (Defra) is phasing out EU direct payments to farmers, which were based on land area, and replacing them with agri-environment schemes, based on delivering environmental outcomes alongside food production, such as the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI). The changes have come at a time when extreme weather, market conditions and sudden rises in input costs are putting farms under immense pressure. Some stakeholders told us that farmers’ uncertainty over how schemes will develop and Defra’s caution over sharing information, in areas such as land-use change and the impact on food production and farm viability, are undermining trust National Audit Office report Defra has been taking an iterative approach, making changes and improvements to the new subsidy schemes over time. But the National Audit Office (NOA) released a 56-page report on Tuesday warning that chopping and changing has made it difficult for farmers to plan their businesses to remain viable, produce food and achieve the programme’s environmental goals. The spending watchdog said the take-up of the new schemes is rapidly increasing with 40,700 farmers signing up as of April 2024. Farmer satisfaction with the SFI has also improved over time and Defra achieved a “step-change” in the speed of processing applications from several months to an average of eight days, the report said. However, the department has failed to build farmer confidence, with just 35% saying they trust the department’s ability to deliver change, according to its findings. Almost half (48%) said they are not at all positive about their future in farming, the report warned. We will optimise schemes and grants in an orderly way, ensuring they produce the right outcomes for all farmers while delivering food security and nature recovery in a just and equitable way Defra has not yet provided a long-term view of how it expects the programme to develop, such as the balance of funding between different payment schemes. The NOA outlined concerns that unconstrained demand for the SFI, which pays farmers for basic actions to manage their land in a more environmentally friendly way, could “crowd out” funding for more ambitious, complex schemes like Country Stewardship, which pays farmers for specialist, bespoke actions. The report said: “Some stakeholders told us that farmers’ uncertainty over how schemes will develop and Defra’s caution over sharing information, in areas such as land-use change and the impact on food production and farm viability, are undermining trust.

Radio 4 Media Show – court case for Extinction Rebellion (XR) protestors – turning the court case in to a protest – A police officer suffered concussion and bruising after being knocked off his motorbike in traffic caused by one of the protests on 9 November 2022, prosecutor Jocelyn Ledward KC said at the sentencing hearing at Southwark Crown Court on Thursday. Judge Christopher Hehir said: “The plain fact is that each of you some time ago has crossed the line from concerned campaigner to fanatic. “You have appointed yourselves as sole arbiters of what should be done about climate change.” Sun reporter infiltrated group. – “The UK’s wildest climate trial” 25Jul24 8pm – The trial of five activists who disrupted the M25 in London in 2022 concluded last week with them receiving the longest ever UK sentences for non-violent protest. Summing up, the judge thanked a journalist from The Sun newspaper who provided key evidence after secretly recording a Just Stop Oil meeting. Damien Gayle describes how he navigated reporting restrictions to cover dramatic scenes in court as the defendants attempted to draw attention to their cause.Jack Chapman is a producer who has also been covering the group’s tactics in his Channel 4 documentary, Chris Packham: Is It Time to Break the Law? We explore the ethical and legal challenges of following these activists. It’s a subject that divides opinion. Meera Selva explains why she feels the media as a whole gets the story wrong.

Judith’s Substack – The Control of Information. What is the Decarbonisation Industrial Complex worth? About $1.5 Trillion every year. 4 billion a day at least. Very powerful covert lobbying. Banker, businessmen and politicians form symbiotic trinity that speaks in harmony about the climate emergency. Carbon capture, solar farms, market in global assets, academic jobs, consultants, eco tourism, compliance lawyers, climate credit agencies. Lot of high paid jobs. Net Zero – what’s the problem with it? Do we need it? No cost benefit analysis found. Concentrates on carbon, which dissenting scientists see as a red herring. Problems with heat measurement – most weather stations are now in urban areas, 100 years ago were in rural areas. Heat island effect. LTN restrict activities of citizens, usually without democratic mandate. Dissenters labelled climate deniers. Traffic fines increased ++++++ Traffic use only down 6% and this could be achieved by other methods, ie., free public transport. Some roads in LTN have reduced traffic but other roads have increased traffic and traffic queues, leading to increase in pollution in some roads. Farming restricted. Farmers oil costs have increased 5X plus even more bureaucracy. Cannot make a profit. Are being offered £250 an acre to rewild heir farms. Likely to cause severe food shortages. Net Zero aims to start phasing out cows and sheep after 2030, and reduce food imports. Devastating effect on available food. Some land is only suitable for pasture. Many countries relying on importing solar energy rather than cutting down on petrol use so fuel use continues. Migration increases due to carbon credits and solar farms throwing farmers off their lands. Also devastating for desert wildlife.

Washington gives Netanyahu ‘full backing’ to expand war on Lebanon: Report Netanyahu visits US. LBC Radio – 80% of Israelis disapprove of Netanyahu – Trump says won’t send money to Israel. Washington gives Netanyahu ‘full backing’ to expand war on Lebanon: Report Hebrew media reports that the army is urging Tel Aviv that ‘now is the right time’ for escalation against Hezbollah and Lebanon Former Israeli intelligence and security official Yuval Malka told Hebrew media on 25 July that Washington has greenlit a wider war on Lebanon. “According to the information I received from the delegation and what I know, Netanyahu has received full legitimacy in the United States to wage a war in Lebanon,” Malka told Israel’s Channel 14. “When he arrives in the country, he is expected to head to the ‘Al-Bur’ in Al-Kiryah, and from there he will start the war in Lebanon,” he added, referring to a military complex that houses the headquarters of the Israeli army’s different corps. Netanyahu visited Washington this week for a speech in Congress and talks with officials. The Israeli army has reportedly signaled to the government that the time is ripe for an expanded war against Lebanon, according to a defense analyst for Hebrew media. “The Israeli army is prepared for a major ground maneuver in Lebanon and warns: Any delay will be in Hezbollah’s favor when there is progress in the background in negotiations to release the hostages,” said Amir Bohbot, military editor and senior defense analyst for Israeli news site Walla, on 24 July. “The Israeli army is sending a signal to the government – we are at the height of preparations for war in the north, and now is the right time,” he added. Citing sources, Bohbot says, “postponement for another year or two will lead to the rehabilitation and alignment of Hezbollah and all parties,” and that “the achievements of the Israeli army will be in vain … Hezbollah will have difficulty launching a campaign against Israel without the two division commanders [recently assassinated by Israel].” “The IDF confirms that the forces trained for the ground maneuver mission in Lebanon, including forces that have gained significant experience in the Gaza Strip, raise the IDF to a very high level of competence.”

Robert Kennedy JR – world problems not being dealt with properly. RFK Jr. reinforces possibility of winning 2024 after Biden drops out Robert F. Kennedy Jr. sees Vice President Harris as indistinguishable from President Biden. In a press conference on Sunday evening, the independent candidate reinforced that he is able to beat both former President Trump and Biden — despite Biden announcing hours earlier that he is exiting the race. In a nearly 30 minute address, Kennedy used critical rhetoric toward the government common in his stump speech, focusing heavily on Biden and Trump, while only occasionally ripping into Harris as an unknown entity. Democrats on Capitol Hill and party groups started coalescing around Harris after Biden offered her his endorsement just weeks before the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Harris, Kennedy said, “has never voiced any distinction between herself and President Biden,” when asked why he spoke about Biden as if he were still in the race. “We don’t know what she stands for,” Kennedy said. “According to her, she stands for everything that President Biden stands for.” The environmental lawyer referred to Harris, who pledged to “earn” what she hopes is millions of Americans’ votes in November, as a “war hawk” on China and Ukraine, and said that she has not made an imprint on U.S. domestic policy as VP. He predicted she wouldn’t meaningfully help lessen the country’s financial deficit, a particular area of focus for Kennedy. Kennedy also critiqued the process of moving away from Biden. He accused Democrats of embracing Harris as Biden’s successor because, in his estimation, “it’s the easiest way to hold onto the money.” The third-party candidate, who changed from the Democrat affiliation to run as an Independent, was referring to certain campaign finance rules that make transferring money from the incumbent president to his running mate possible during the election cycle.

Whitney Webb – how Peter Thiel, Bilderberg, convinced Trump t accept J D Vance who called him ‘never Trump’ and Hitler – will Trump be less of a warmonger? No. – big tech merged with security services – The billionaire who fueled JD Vance’s rapid rise to the Trump VP spot — analysis Former President Donald Trump’s selection of Ohio GOP Sen. JD Vance to be his running mate shows one thing remains constant, even in a presidential race upended by an attempt to assassinate one candidate and doubts about whether the other is fit to run: money in presidential politics is still king. Vance, a relative newcomer to national politics, has assiduously courted billionaires and Silicon Valley titans to bankroll his unlikely rise from bestselling memoirist of despair, drugs and generational poverty in Appalachia to a ticket that could seat him a heartbeat away from the presidency. During his rapid rise, he has emerged as an ardent and effective defender of Trump, putting an intellectual gloss on the former president’s raw MAGA populism. But Vance may never have been in serious consideration for the No. 2 spot on the ticket had he not won elective office in a major Rust Belt state in the first place. And big donors, particularly from the tech sector, provided the rocket fuel he needed to advance in electoral politics. Vance’s most prominent benefactor over the years is Peter Thiel, the iconoclastic tech pioneer and investor. Thiel hired Vance at his global investment firm in 2017, and then nurtured Vance’s political rise, donating $15 million to his 2022 Ohio Senate campaign and helping him win a closely fought GOP primary before going on to capture the seat in the general election. Since then, Vance has received entrée to other tech mega-investors and was instrumental in organizing a $12 million fundraiser for Trump in June that included venture capitalists Chamath Paldihapitiya, an early senior executive at Facebook, and David Sacks, who was a key figure in developing Paypal, served as its COO and later founded the social networking service Yammer. Sacks previously chipped in $1 million of his personal fortune to a pro-Vance super PAC, according to FEC records. But it’s the relationship with Thiel that has been the most consequential for Vance. Their personal and financial ties formed long before Vance formally entered politics.

‘Accelerate or Die’ documentary on Sky Arts – what is Accelerationism? – Nick Land. Nietzsche. Ayn Rand. Influenced by 4th Reich Satanic Nazis on LSD such as Nick Land. Accelerate Or Die! (part) 4th Reich Accelerationism LSD Trip, Perils Of Abandoning The Mixed Economy Geopolitics and the Occult The 4th Reich’s Threat: ‘Accelerate or Die!’ Artist Jake Chapman explores whether capitalism and technology are already one and the same, accelerating towards an inevitable climax Accelerationism, amphetamine philosophy, and the Death Trip This is a story about dangerous ideas, and words’ magical power to heal and to harm. It’s about AI, Charles Manson, dubstep, Neo-Nazis, occultism, and a lot of amphetamine, but it’s mainly about Nicholas Land. In 1993, techno-feminist Sadie Plant set up a research unit in the philosophy department at Warwick University called the Cybernetic Culture Research Unit (CCRU). It wasn’t a ‘real’ academic centre — it didn’t have a large grant or any institutional status, it was just a piece of paper on a door. But the name drew people into its vortex. The dominant influence in the CCRU became a 30-year-old mid-career researcher called Nick Land — a fan of continental critical theorists like Deleuze, Guattari and George Bataille. Land and the CCRU mixed together cyberpunk, science-fiction, cryptocurrency, drugs and post-humanism, drained it through the mesh of continental theory, and created Accelerationism. Guardian journalist Andy Beckett has a good definition: Accelerationists argue that technology, particularly computer technology, and capitalism, particularly the most aggressive, global variety, should be massively sped up and intensified — either because this is the best way forward for humanity, or because there is no alternative. Accelerationists favour automation. They favour the further merging of the digital and the human. They often favour the deregulation of business, and drastically scaled-back government. They believe that people should stop deluding themselves that economic and technological progress can be controlled. They often believe that social and political upheaval has a value in itself.

Bangladesh internet blackout, coming to a Western country near you soon? Al Jazeera report – internet down in Bangladesh – Government attacking students. Bangladesh curfews, internet blackout batter economy amid quota protests…. All of that has brought the economy to a screeching halt amid high inflation and fast-depleting foreign reserves. In the past five days, Bangladesh’s economy has suffered losses amounting to more than $1.2bn, according to an estimate by the country’s business community. Aside from the shutdown of almost all industries, there were economic losses due to vandalism and arson attacks, including on the country’s lone metro rail system in Dhaka, and the national television network’s premises. Speaking to business leaders on Monday, Hasina blamed the internet blackout on opposition parties, alleging that their activists had ruptured internet cables across the country. She promised the internet connections would be restored soon. The internet blackout imposed on Thursday night has hit almost all businesses and industries. It has shut down e-commerce and f-commerce, which are Facebook-based businesses popular in Bangladesh. These sectors are estimated to be losing at least $5m in revenue per day. Shahab Uddin, vice president of the e-commerce Association of Bangladesh, told Al Jazeera that it’s not just the businesses that are taking losses. “People in the city got habituated to ordering everything online in the past few years. I also ordered most things, including groceries, online, and my daily life has become a struggle now.” Call centres are facing daily losses of at least $3m per day, Wahid Sharif, president of the Bangladesh Association of Contact Centres and Outsourcing Association, told Al Jazeera. More than two-thirds of the call centre industry’s revenue comes from serving global companies, and the reputational damage that this industry has suffered because of nearly five days of the ongoing internet blackout is “irreparable,” Sharif said.

Gary Waterman on the Illuminati plan for three world wars.  The Third World War must be fomented by taking advantage of the differences caused by the ‘agentur’ of the ‘Illuminati’ between the political Zionists and the leaders of Islamic World. The war must be conducted in such a way that Islam (the Moslem Arabic World) and political Zionism (the State of Israel) mutually destroy each other. Meanwhile the other nations, once more divided on this issue will be constrained to fight to the point of complete physical, moral, spiritual and economical exhaustion We shall unleash the Nihilists and the atheists, and we shall provoke a formidable social cataclysm which in all its horror will show clearly to the nations the effect of absolute atheism, origin of savagery and of the most bloody turmoil. Then everywhere, the citizens, obliged to defend themselves against the world minority of revolutionaries, will exterminate those destroyers of civilization, and the multitude, disillusioned with Christianity, whose deistic spirits will from that moment be without compass or direction, anxious for an ideal, but without knowing where to render its adoration, will receive the true light through the universal manifestation of the pure doctrine of Lucifer, brought finally out in the public view. This manifestation will result from the general reactionary movement which will follow the destruction of Christianity and atheism, both conquered and exterminated at the same time.

– ELECTION FIXING UK STYLE, CRUSHING SMALL POLITICAL PARTIES 1: Battle to get UK Workers Party established.  Andy Hudd, Deputy Head of Worker’s Party, joins Tony and Martin. Workers Party got no MPs – what went wrong? Media blackout. Hope Not Hate leafleted against them in Rochdale. Labour’s plans for the economy – public/private partnerships.  Workers Party – Ten Point Programme Our Ten Point Programme was adopted at our foundation in 2019. It is clear and to the point. It is supplemented by a Manifesto which you can read elsewhere on this site. Leader George Galloway Deputy Chris Williamson Deputy Andy Hudd Deputy Peter Ford Economics The Workers Party believes in an economy that works for the working class people, the vast majority. The workers create all the wealth in society; build the houses, man the hospitals, power the machinery, everywhere you look workers designed, planned, built, maintained or operate the things society needs, yet they do not get their full share. Private interests have run the jobs and the country down. Big private interests step and squash small private interests. The jungle law of capitalism is that the strong take from the weak. We believe in the importance of a planned economy, in a directing role for the state to ensure jobs, industry and the country works fairly. Free-market fundamentalism has gutted Britain of its industries, undermined our manufacturing and productive industries, castrating our society and adversely destabilising proud working-class traditions, culture and way of life. Our country needs the state to guide the economic life of the country in such a way as to promote work, to respect the dignity of labour, and to serve the working people. All adults have a duty to work in a useful fashion, according to their talents and abilities, and society has an equal duty to ensure that useful employment is available to all, part-time or full-time according to the domestic, health and life constraints of the worker.

– ELECTION FIXING UK STYLE, CRUSHING SMALL POLITICAL PARTIES 2: Neil McEvoy, candidate for Propel Party in Wales, on how his election campaign was sabotaged. Electioneering system difficult for small Parties. PR? Vaughn Gethen, Welsh First Minister, out. Neil McAvoy explains what happened behind the scenes. Nation.Cymru website. Neil McEvoy claims up to half his election leaflets haven’t been delivered by Royal Mail Former Plaid Cymru MS Neil McEvoy is claiming that thousands of leaflets for his new party Propel have not been delivered by Royal Mail. Mr McEvoy was a regional MS for South Wales Central from 2016 until 2021. After being expelled by Plaid following a series of complaints made about him, he set up a new party called Propel, of which he is the leader. In the general election he is a Propel candidate in Cardiff West. Every candidate is entitled to have a leaflet delivered free of charge to each household in the constituency where they are standing. Mr McEvoy says he has been contacted by people across Cardiff West who haven’t received his leaflet. Investigating He said: “The Royal Mail are investigating. The longer this is up on social media, the more posts I’m getting and the more people are getting in touch with me to say they’ve not had the leaflet. “Just minutes ago someone from a different part of Radyr got in touch and said they’d got nothing off us. It’s just appalling, really. “It’s looking at maybe 50% coverage of the constituency only, which is just completely unfair. It’s not our election really, because obviously we’re aiming more at the Senedd election in 2026. It’s a ‘let’s get out there’ exercise essentially and the Royal Mail has just not upheld their part of the bargain. “We’ll want compensating for the expense we’ve gone to. It’s appalling really.” Mr McEvoy said he had delivered 50,000 leaflets to Royal Mail for delivery to every household in the constituency. “I’m picking up 1,100 leaflets that are left over. Where have the rest gone? My suspicion is that they have been binned.”BBC: Vexatious Complaints drop after Neil McEvoy leaves Senedd Neil McEvoy was a Member of the Senedd until last May last year Complaints against Senedd members have dropped from 214 to 44 in the past year, the standards commissioner says.

The King’s Speech. Trains renationalised – ROSCOs ‘gravy train’ profits.  Leeds riot – Social Services trying to take kids off family. Leeds children at centre of Harehills riot returned to family member.  Times Radio – Ben Clapworthy on Labour’s transport plans and rail Unions. King’s Speech – education. Labour’s railway renationalisation should be directed at ROSCOs… According to Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee, passenger train companies received £4.4 billion in subsidies in the 12 months up to March 2023, the latest year for which data is available. This amount marked a significant decrease from the £11.7 billion provided by taxpayers to support the passenger rail industry during the financial year 2020-21. In contrast, in pre-Covid 2019, passenger train companies required just £1.7 billion in subsidies. In contrast, ROSCOs have thrived. According to the Office of Rail and Road (ORR), ROSCOs paid £409.7m in dividends in 2022-23, with profit margins soaring to 41.6%, as cited in The Guardian. These companies have benefited from “hell or high water” clauses in their contracts, ensuring lease payments continue despite falling passenger revenues. Financial analysis by the ORR highlights that leasing costs for train operators fell slightly to £3.1bn last year but remain nearly 30% higher than five years ago, The Guardian reported in February this year. The substantial profit margins and dividends of ROSCOs reflect a corporate arrangement where risks are socialised, and rewards are privatised. With taxpayer subsidies twice as high as pre-pandemic levels, the public effectively underwrites the £3.1bn spent annually on leasing trains. The three main ROSCOs — Eversholt, Porterbrook, and Angel Trains — were created during privatisation and maintain their dominance today despite government efforts to bring in competition. Over the past decade, they have paid cumulative dividends of around £2bn. Eversholt, a subsidiary of CK Hutchison, paid £40.7m in dividends in 2022. Porterbrook, owned by a consortium led by Allianz and AIM, paid £80m. Angel Trains, majority-owned by PSP, paid £124.6m. Rail union RMT’s research indicates that Angel, Eversholt, and Porterbrook paid out nearly £1bn in dividends during 2020-21, despite significant taxpayer support to the industry. Much of these dividends went to overseas entities based in Luxembourg and Jersey.

Attempt on life of Donald Trump.  Maps show location of Trump, gunman, law enforcement snipers at Pennsylvania rally shooting New details are emerging on the investigation after a gunman opened fire Saturday at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where former President Donald Trump was addressing a crowd of supporters. Trump was rushed from the stage after shots rang out and later said he was injured by a bullet that struck the upper part of his right ear. The gunman was killed by a Secret Service sniper, officials said. “U.S. Secret Service personnel neutralized the shooter, who is now deceased,” the agency said in a statement. A man in the audience at the rally was killed in the shooting and two others were critically wounded. Early Sunday morning, the FBI identified the gunman as Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, which is outside of Pittsburgh. Multiple law enforcement sources said he was armed with a semiautomatic AR-style rifle and opened fire from the roof of a shed about 410 feet from the stage where Trump was speaking. The gunman’s location was outside of the security perimeter established by the Secret Service around Trump’s rally, according to law enforcement sources. Map shows location of the shooting site at Trump rally This image shows the location of the shooting site, about 400 feet from the stage, at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024. Google Earth/CBS News Satellite maps of the property where the rally took place, which were generated using GoogleEarth and include features to measure distance, appear to corroborate the distance of about 400 feet. Secret Service snipers were positioned on rooftops behind the stage where Trump was speaking. On Saturday, there were four counter-sniper teams on site, a law enforcement official said….

Trump demonised on NZ TV 2023 – shooting Trump doll. TVNZ Breakfast hosts shooting Trump doll sparks outrage, network apologises 24 Jan, 2023 TVNZ is apologising after Breakfast hosts fired at a doll of former US President Donald Trump using a look-a-like gun during a live broadcast. All four presenters took turns during yesterday’s morning show using a bug killer fashioned in the shape of a gun and a Trump doll as a target. The stunt has been widely condemned by viewers questioning whether the action of a mock shooting was appropriate. Today TVNZ said while it was intended to be a fun segment, “further consideration should have been given to the perception created by using this product on a political themed toy. “This segment on Breakfast was intended to be a light-hearted look at the popular Bug A Salt,” TVNZ told the Herald. “Our team trialled the salt bullets on each other’s arms and legs before grabbing a Trump troll doll that was in the office to showcase the product further. “We apologise if this segment upset any of our viewers.” In yesterday morning’s segment, presenter Chris Chang gave a demonstration of the Bug-A-Salt salt gun, used to kill flies and insects, using a doll of former US president Donald Trump as a target. Advertisement Chang then impersonated Trump’s New York accent, saying: “That was huge, we’ve gotta get rid of these guys, they’re coming into our country,” before host Jenny-May Clarkson also shot the doll. Host Matty McLean then addressed viewers by speaking directly to the camera and said: “Get a little doll, a Donald Trump doll, and go hard.” Among the outraged social media users, David Seymour took to Twitter to question the appropriateness of encouraging people to shoot a doll of a politician given recent reporting on political abuse and vitriol. “Trump’s not my favourite politician either, but is this the same TVNZ that’s been complaining about the abuse of politicians for the last week?” “Insane,” Seymour said. Another Twitter user said: “Imagine the outrage if American breakfast TV show hosts took turns shooting a Jacinda Ardern doll with salt guns while laughing and mocking her.”

Tucker Carlson predicting the shooting of Trump. Former Fox News commentator Tucker Carlson has repeatedly pedaled a conspiracy theory that Donald Trump will be the target of an assassination plot, most recently saying in an interview the U.S. is “speeding toward” the former president’s assassination—an ‘unfounded’ claim amplified by other right-wing media personalities… Tucker Carlson claims Trump is going to be assassinated Former Fox News host first floated his assassination theory during his interview with with the ex-president Wednesday 30 August 2023 Tucker Carlson says Trump is ‘speeding’ toward assassination by political opponents Former Fox News host turned Twitter pundit Tucker Carlson once again made dark insinuations when he claimed during an interview that Democrats will attempt to assassinate former President Donald Trump. Carlson first floated the idea that Mr Trump would be killed by Democrats during an interview last Thursday, which coincided with the first Republican GOP debate. Mr Trump skipped the debate to try to upstage it with his Twitter interview. That first exchange began after Carlson pressed Mr Trump for his opinions on the controversial death of child sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. Epstein’s death was officially ruled a suicide, though theories insisting he was killed to cover-up his connections to powerful people persist. “So the reason I’m asking you is I’m looking at the trajectory since 2015 when you got into politics, you know, for real. And then one, they started with protests against you, massive protests, organized protest by the left, and then it moved to impeachment twice. Right. And now indictment,” Carlson said during the interview. “I mean, the next stages is violence. Is, are you worried that they’re going to try and kill you? Why wouldn’t they try and kill you? Honestly.” Mr Trump mostly brushed the question off, calling his opponents “savage animals” before insisting there were “great people” in the Democratic party and saying he wanted to be representative of all Americans, marking a rare occasion in which the former president was made to look moderate in his views. But Carlson brought his violent conspiracy up again during an appearance on The Adam Carolla Show, a podcast hosted by the right wing celebrity. Carolla asked Carlson what “the future holds,” and whether or not “they” would let Mr Trump become president again, which led Carlson down the rabbit hole toward assassination. “If you begin with criticism, then you go to protest. Then you go to impeachment. Now you go to indictment and none of them work. What’s next? I mean, you know, graph it out, man!” Carlson said. “We’re speeding toward assassination, obviously, and no one will say that! But I don’t, I don’t know how you can’t reach that conclusion.” In this instance Carlson did not even centre the supposed scheming on Democrats; he suggested that anti-Trump Republicans could also be gunning — literally — for Mr Trump. “You know what it’s been like. They have decided, permanent Washington,” he said. “Both parties have decided that there’s something about Trump that’s so threatening to them, they just can’t have it.”

BBC’s David Attenborough – suggests  shooting Trump to save the planet. Sir David Attenborough on Donald Trump: ‘We could shoot him. It’s not a bad idea’ ‘What alternative do we have? Do we have any control or influence over the American elections?’ the naturalist says before joking about an alternative solution “Well, we lived through that with earlier presidents – they’ve been equally guilty… But what alternative do we have? Do we have any control or influence over the American elections? Of course we don’t,” he said. Adopting a hushed tone, he said: “We could shoot him, it’s not a bad idea” before chuckling. BBC presenter David Aaronovitch tweets ‘if I was Biden I’d hurry up and have Trump murdered’ after US Supreme Court ruling – before deleting ‘satirical’ post amid backlash A BBC radio presenter has sparked anger after saying that US President Joe Biden should have Donald Trump ‘murdered’. David Aaronovitch, who presents Radio 4’s Briefing Room show, took to X/Twitter yesterday: ‘If I was Biden I’d hurry up and have Trump murdered on the basis that he is a threat to America’s security #SCOTUS’. Critics claimed Mr Aaronovitch had broken the corporation’s rules around employee impartiality. However, he stressed the post was ‘satirical’ before he deleted the tweet 90 minutes later blaming a ‘far right pile on’. It comes after the US Supreme Court ruled that former US presidents have broad immunity from prosecution, extending the delay in the Washington criminal case against Trump on charges he plotted to overturn his 2020 presidential election loss and all but ending prospects the former president could be tried before the November election. In a historic 6-3 ruling, the court’s conservative majority, including three justices appointed by Trump, narrowed the case against him and returned it to a trial court to determine what is left of special counsel Jack Smith’s indictment. Spectator columnist Steven Barratt wrote on X/Twitter: ‘Impartiality’ may not be in the best of health at the BBC…’ A second person said: ‘This post alone is bad enough but even worse when you remember that David is a BBC presenter.’ Another person urged him to delete the post and said: ‘Delete this tweet David. You advocating murder, publicly, and think it is ok .’ Responding to the critic, he said the post was ‘satirical and based on today’s 6-3 ruling on presidential immunity’. When one follower attempted to add a ‘community note’ to his post, he said: ‘That community note should be interesting. ‘But before you go to the effort of writing it, try reading the arguments, the ruling and the dissent in the Supreme Court’s judgment on presidential immunity delivered today.’ Posting 90 minutes when he deleted the post, Mr Aaronovitch said: ‘There is now a far right pile-on suggesting that my tweet about the Supreme Court’s ruling on presidential immunity is an incitement to violence when it’s plainly a satire’. ‘So I’m deleting it. If nothing else though it’s given me a map of some of the daftest people on this site….

Maria Zakarovah on how useless US secret services are and US hit list for assassinations. Ukraine’s attempts to assassinate Putin. Bobby Kennedy Jr, son of Robert Francis Kennedy Jr, regarding the failure of the US special services to protect a presidential candidate: “Unsecured rooftop 150 yards away. Multiple witnesses saying they were screaming at secret service and cops for 3-4 minutes as they watched the guy with the rifle crawl to the spot and line up his shot. Take your secret service and shove it up your ass. Prayers to Trump and his family.” Sunday, 14 July, 2024 – 13:12 Forwarded From Russian MFA: Russian MFA Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova: Dear Bobby and the not-so-dear “congresspersons”, who support and vote for weapons supplies to Zelensky in the United States: 1. Maybe it would be better to use this money to finance the US police and other services which are supposed to administer law in the United States? 2. Yesterday Budanov, one of the heads of Kiev regime, publicly admitted that the Ukrainian intelligence service made attempts to assassinate the Russian President, Vladimir Putin. So, this assassination attempt was made once again with the use of American money, without which the Main Directorate of Intelligence, the Security Service of Ukraine and the Presidential Office, in general, would not have been able to carry out their malicious activities. 3. Through its massive funding and uncontrolled arms supplies, Washington has created a terrorist structure in Ukraine — the Kiev regime. A machine that carries out assassinations, bombings, and acts of terror against both political figures and civilians. The website Myrotvorets, protected by the Americans, deserves special mention: it is basically a hit list of journalists and public activists. The United States of America must carefully re-evaluate its policy to incite hatred toward political opponents, countries and people, as well as sponsor terrorism. The bell has already tolled for Washington!

Donald Trump describes attempt to kill him in Republican convention speech – Donald Trump addressed the Republican convention in Milwaukee as he returned to the stage for the first time since an attempt on his life at a rally on Saturday.  The former president described feeling the bullet strike his ear and being smothered by Secret Service agents. Trump said he narrowly avoided being killed.Who was the shooter? Coming wars under Trump or Biden. Trump’s speech after shooting – explaining what happened. WW3 less likely with Trump?  Trump recounts shooting in marathon Republican convention speech Donald Trump told the Republican National Convention he was “not supposed to be here,” reflecting during a marathon speech on a recent attempt on his life. His address on Thursday night came just five days after his ear was pierced by bullets fired at him by a would-be assassin during a rally in Pennsylvania. The speech, delivered to a hushed crowd, struck in parts a sombre tone and only once mentioned the name of his rival, President Joe Biden. His wife Melania also made a rare public appearance, joining her husband on stage with other family members. During his 90-minute speech, there were familiar targets of Trump attacks such as undocumented migrants, Biden foreign policy and China. But the start was very different, as he recalled the details of last Saturday’s attack in Pennsylvania, describing how a bullet narrowly missed his head and grazed his ear while he turned his head to present a chart of immigration figures. One man, Corey Comperatore, was killed in the attack, after which the suspected gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, was shot dead by authorities. Mr Comperatore was honoured at a memorial service on Thursday, as major questions continue to be asked over security lapses at the event. Trump praised the Secret Service agents who shielded him after the shots were fired, and said he was only alive to tell the story “by the grace of almighty God”.

Evidence Deep State are protecting assassination culprits: Secret Service director says she will not resign after attempted Trump assassination Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle said she will not be stepping down from her role in the wake of the attempted assassination of former President Trump. Cheatle has been thrust into the national spotlight in recent days after a gunman opened fire at a Trump rally on Saturday, grazing the former president’s ear, killing a rally attendee and injuring two others. The Secret Service has faced scrutiny over the incident as questions swirl over how the gunman was able to get close enough to take a shot at Trump during the rally in Butler, Pa. Some critics and lawmakers have suggested that Cheatle should resign or be fired over the shooting. ABC’s Pierre Thomas noted that Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said he has “100 percent” confidence in the Secret Service following the shooting. “I appreciate the secretary’s comments. And we are going to continue to be transparent and communicate with people,” she responded. When asked if she plans to step down following the incident, she said she does not. “I do plan to stay on,” she told Thomas in the interview that aired Monday on ABC News’s “World News Tonight.” She also said her first reaction to the shooting was “shock and concern” for the former president, adding that the shooting “should have never happened.” She reiterated to Thomas that the shooting was “unacceptable” and “it’s something that shouldn’t happen again.” She also said it is her responsibility to look into the incident. “The buck stops with me,” she said. “I am the director of the Secret Service, and I need to make sure that we are performing a review and that we are giving resources to our personnel as necessary.” President Biden directed an independent review of rally security Sunday. Cheatle said in a Monday statement that the Secret Service will “participate fully” in the independent review and work with Congress “on any oversight action.” GOP lawmakers are pledging congressional investigations into the shooting. Cheatle is expected to testify to the House Oversight Committee next week about the incident.

‘Greg Smith’, witness to shooter on roof – 4 mins when intervention could have happened. Deep state opinion of Trump shooting. Witness tells BBC he warned police of gunman on roof Watch: Witness tells BBC he warned police of gunman on roof A man with a rifle could be seen on a rooftop minutes before shots were fired at a Donald Trump rally in Pennsylvania, a witness has told the BBC’s Gary O’Donoghue at the scene. The witness, who called himself Greg, said the man had crawled on top of the building located just outside the event in Butler County.  A man with a rifle was seen on a rooftop minutes before shots were fired at a Donald Trump rally in Pennsylvania, a witness has told the BBC. Greg Smith said the man had crawled on top of a building just outside the event in Butler County on Saturday evening. He said he pointed the gunman out to police. “I’m thinking to myself ‘Why is Trump still speaking, why have they not pulled him off the stage’… the next thing you know, five shots ring out.” The former president was immediately swarmed by Secret Service agents and escorted away. He was seen with blood on his face and later said a bullet had pierced his ear. The gunman was shot dead, officials later confirmed. Mr Smith told the BBC he saw Secret Service agents shoot the man. Mr Smith was listening from outside the rally and said he saw the gunman around five minutes into Trump’s speech. “We noticed the guy bear-crawling up the roof of the building beside us, 50ft away,” he said. “He had a rifle, we could clearly see a rifle. “We’re pointing at him, the police are down there running around on the ground, we’re like ‘Hey man, there’s a guy on the roof with a rifle’… and the police did not know what was going on.” Mr Smith said he tried to alert the authorities for three to four minutes, but thought they probably could not see the gunman because of the slope of the roof.

BILDERBERGER J D Vance – is 4th Reich Bilderberg chief Peter Thiel’s puppy dog! Trump’s Vice President pick J D Vance – at Bilderberg 2017 – what he thinks of Iran.  The billionaire who fueled JD Vance’s rapid rise to the Trump VP spot — analysis…. In 2019 Vance moved back to his native Ohio, where he started his own venture capitalist firm, heavily backed by Thiel and other elite tech investors. By then he was flirting with a potential run for elective office, and Thiel was encouraging him. By the time Vance finally took the plunge in 2021, he had been transformed from one of Trump’s most vitriolic critics (he once called Trump “an American Hitler” in a private message to a friend) into one of his most effective defenders and fundraisers. Thiel brought Vance to his very first meeting with Trump at Mar-a-Lago in February 2021, according to the New York Times. In the 2022 campaign, Thiel made $15 million in donations to Vance’s SuperPAC, Protect Ohio Values, a staggering amount from a single individual for a Senate race, according to OpenSecrets, a nonpartisan group that tracks the influence of money on politics. But that wasn’t all. Thiel also steered at least $200,000 to Vance’s super PAC from a group he controlled called Per Aspera Policy, according to the Kansas City Star and OpenSecrets. Per Aspera is a dark money nonprofit, which means that its spending is used to influence elections, but it is not required to disclose its donors. In the same cycle, Vance’s super PAC also received hundreds of thousands in contributions from the Mercer, Uihlein and Lindner families, all staples of mega-conservative political giving in recent years. It is not entirely clear what Thiel may have wanted in exchange for his largesse. (Thiel declined comment for this story.) Thiel’s philosophy has been described as “techno-libertarian,” but critics say it veers toward authoritarianism, and even fascism (he wrote in an article in a libertarian journal in 2009, “I no longer believe that freedom and democracy are compatible”). A co-founder of PayPal and Palantir Technologies, and an early investor in Facebook, Thiel also has business interests with the U.S. government, which may be especially important at a time when the tech sector is under intense scrutiny from both Democrats and Republicans. Whether his goals are ideological or financial, government watchdogs are watching closely. “We’ve seen this long history of financial entanglements between Thiel and Vance,” said Anna Massoglia, editorial and investigations manager at OpenSecrets. “Thiel’s interests in having Vance in office are not explicit, but there’s no question he has business interests that could be benefited by having someone like JD Vance in his corner.”

Houthi drone strike on Tel Aviv. Wafa Aludaini’s report from Gaza on chemical and biological the present situation there.  Polio virus found in Gaza sewage samples, says health ministry – Officials want an immediate halt to the fighting so clean water can be brought in and sewage lines repaired. The virus that causes polio has been detected in sewage samples in Gaza, according to its health ministry. It said tests had been carried out with UNICEF and that the finding “exposes thousands of residents to the risk of contracting poliomyelitis”. It warned of a potential “new health disaster” if action isn’t taken. Polio mainly affects children and usually spreads through contact with faeces; for example when people don’t wash their hands properly, or from contaminated food or water. The dire conditions in Gaza, where infrastructure has been decimated and thousands are packed together in camps, make transmission far more likely. In a statement, the health ministry called “for an immediate halt to the Israeli aggression, providing usable water, repairing sewage lines, and ending population crowding in places of displacement”.

Amy Fallon, Australian journalist, on Craig Murray’s influence on ICJ genocide in Gaza case, and the freedom of Julian Assange. Patrizia Opulenza poem.  Hands Joined in Hope: Citizens Surround Parliament, Pleading for Gaza – On the hottest day of the year people went into town and joined hands, some of them with strangers, to demand that U K MPs take action to end Israel’s genocide in Gaza. Amy FallonYou could go for years in London without bumping into any one who you know randomly – then you go to a protest and meet half a dozen people who you do. All of the familiar faces that I saw at yesterday’s event at Westminster, where we formed a human chain around the Parliament to demand that MPs take action to end Israel’s genocide in Gaza, stop arming it and support international courts to hold Israel to account, were Assange campaigners. That’s not surprising given that they have a strong sense of social justice. (One of the Assange protesters I saw there even told me that he was one of only two people to go to Sweden to protest when Julian was facing sexual assault allegations there which were later dropped). But all of them seemed to have gone there on their own, along with many others I met who were also alone, on a balmy Thursday night when they could have just gone to the pub. The human chain was similar to the one that people formed around Parliament in 2022 to raise awareness of Julian, sparked by activist Matt O Branain although there was then said to be about 7,000 involved in that event which is probably not a surprise given that it was on a weekend. Palestine is still getting people out and onto the street in large numbers. Two of the Assange supporters who I bumped into had both been up in Blackburn with me for the campaign for Craig Murray – Naila who was one of the managers and artist Daniel Fooks, who is also an activist and a keen supporter of Julian and Craig. “Why did you come here?” asked a guy to one of the other Assange supporters as Naila and I were walking along Westminster bridge past the chain. He was collecting answers for social media. “Because I’m human, that’s all you need to know,” he said. I’d spent the weekend watching the series The Lobby by Al Jazeera. Yesterday’s event, organised by Palestine Solidarity Campaign, came one day before the ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordering Israel to end its occupation of Palestinian territories.

Minute by minute, the day Trump cheated death by a whisker: How shooter told his dad he wanted to borrow his AR-15 rifle to do some target practice before shocking the world with failed assassination attempt By Jonathan Mayo Seven days ago a gunman’s bullet came within millimetres of killing Donald Trump, who told his followers on Thursday: ‘I shouldn’t be here. I had God on my side.’ As debate rages about the assassin’s motive and the mistakes made by those in charge of the former president’s security, Jonathan Mayo gives a gripping minute-by-minute account of the day a peaceful election rally turned to bloodshed…

Saturday, July 13, 10am
At the Butler Farm Show Grounds in Pennsylvania, 30 miles north of Pittsburgh, final touches are being made to lighting rigs, grandstand seating and yards of red, white and blue bunting. Normally the 100-acre Show Grounds are used for agricultural fairs and tractor exhibitions but, today, former US president Donald Trump will be holding an election rally. The ex-president is popular here – in 2016 and 2020, he won Butler County both times with 65 per cent of the vote. The organisers say that since the rally was announced ten days ago more than 15,000 tickets have been sold.

11am
A long-haired 20-year-old man named Thomas Matthew Crooks arrives at the Show Grounds. In May, he graduated from Allegheny County Community College with a degree in engineering but is currently working in the kitchen of a local care home. A few days ago, Crooks asked his boss if he could have Saturday off as he had ‘something to do’. Crooks is wearing a T-shirt with the name of a YouTube channel for firearms enthusiasts called Demolition Ranch on the front, which features videos such as ‘Is the AK-50 any good?’ Thomas Matthew Crooks (pictured) arrives at the show grounds wearing a grey shirt with the name of a YouTube channel for firearms enthusiasts called Demolition Ranch Thomas Matthew Crooks (pictured) arrives at the show grounds wearing a grey shirt with the name of a YouTube channel for firearms enthusiasts called Demolition Ranch Earlier this morning, Crooks drove 35 miles from his home in Bethel Park on the outskirts of Pittsburgh where he lives with his parents and older sister, to reconnoitre the Show Grounds, stopping to buy a 5ft ladder and 50 rounds of ammunition. After hanging around for an hour, Crooks drives away. Later he intends to return and assassinate Donald Trump.

2.30pm
US Secret Service and local law enforcement take up their positions. Three days ago, they made a security assessment of the area and decided where their officers and agents should be deployed. Behind the stage are three large barns where Secret Service sniper teams will keep watch on the crowd, backed up by state troopers in the grass arena. Outside the Show Grounds’ perimeter and about 400ft to the left of the stage is a large factory owned by a firm named AGR International but, as it has a sloping roof, it was decided that it is too much of a health and safety risk for police snipers, so officers will be stationed inside the building instead. Details of the precise location of the stage from which Donald Trump will speak this afternoon have not been made public as such information could be useful to any potential assassin. The Secret Service is proud of the fact that no president under their care has been injured since shots were fired at Ronald Reagan in March 1981.

3pm
The gates to the Show Grounds are opened to the public and everyone entering is scanned for weapons by metal detectors. Thomas Crooks has parked his car at a nearby gas station and as he walks through a detector, a rangefinder in his pocket – used to measure the distance of long-range targets – sets off an alarm. Security finds nothing else incriminating and so Crooks is allowed in, but police keep an eye on him until he eventually leaves the arena. Crooks is walking outside the perimeter of the Show Grounds. Nearby he has concealed a bag containing an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle (one of over 20 legally-owned weapons that belong to his father), ammunition, the rangefinder and a transmitter to activate two explosive devices hidden in the boot of his car to provide a distraction during the shooting. Crooks has left a third bomb in his home. As he walks past the AGR factory building outside the perimeter, the would-be assassin is spotted by police officers who think he looks suspicious, but they lose sight of him.

5.40pm
Donald Trump’s motorcade arrives at the Show Grounds to ecstatic applause and cheering from supporters. Today is Trump’s final public appearance before the start of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee where he will be officially selected as the party’s nominee for president. Trump’s campaign is on a roll after his debate on June 28 with a confused and often incoherent President Joe Biden. Trump declared the following day: ‘Joe Biden’s age is not his problem. It’s his competence.’ Opinion polls put Trump ahead by as much as six points.

5.45pm
A Secret Service sniper in the arena spots Crooks holding the rangefinder near the AGR International factory. He calls in with a report and sends a photo of the man to his colleagues around the arena. Soon police and Secret Service radios are crackling with reports of a ‘suspicious male’ near the building.

6.05pm
It’s the moment the 15,000 people in the Show Grounds have been waiting for – Donald Trump climbs on to the stage wearing his trademark red Make America Great Again baseball cap and joins in their clapping. As the rapturous applause dies down he tells them ‘This is a big crowd. This is a big, big, beautiful crowd’, and they roar back their approval. Trump goes on: ‘Our country is going to hell if you haven’t noticed. Millions and millions of people are pouring in from prisons and mental institutions, we’re going to stop it.’ An officer from the Butler Police Department is searching the area around the factory but has yet to find Crooks.

6.08pm
Crooks uses an air-conditioning unit on an outside wall to clamber on to the factory, and then shimmies up its sloping roof to get a clear view of the stage. He has with him his father’s AR-15 semi-automatic rifle. Below him, a couple of Trump fans named Mike and Amber DiFrischia, who arrived late for the rally, have found a spot close to the perimeter and to their horror spot Crooks and his rifle and assume the crowd must be his target. Amber said later: ‘You don’t know whether to hit the deck, hide or just stand still. It’s very chaotic in those split seconds.’ They decide to run and hide behind a tree and Mike starts filming the gunman Members of the public are pointing towards the factory roof shouting: ‘He’s got a gun!’ In response, an officer from the Butler Police Department is hoisted up 8ft on to the roof by a colleague. As the policeman grips the edge of the building, Crooks swings round and points his rifle at him. Thinking he’s about to be shot and unable to unholster his gun, the policeman drops to the ground and immediately alerts others to Crooks’s location. Investigators believe this unexpected encounter with the officer may have spurred Crooks to ‘hurry his shots’.

6.11pm
On the stage Trump has turned to his right and is pointing to a chart on a giant screen showing the scale of illegal immigration into the United States. Crooks takes aim at the former president’s head. The previous day the 20 year-old visited a gun club where he is a member to practise on the rifle range. The club’s range is 200 yards long – Donald Trump is standing 133 yards, or 400ft away.

6.11pm and 33 seconds
Trump turns very slightly to face the crowd and says: ‘That chart’s a couple of months old and if you really want to see something that’s sad, take a look at what happ-‘. Suddenly shots ring out and Trump hears what he later described as ‘the world’s largest mosquito’ and is hit on his right ear. He winces, touches the side of his face, looks at his hand which is covered in blood and then drops to the floor. Black-suited Secret Service agents in dark glasses storm the stage to cover him. One agent shouts, ‘Get down! Get down!’ Crooks keeps firing and the audience start screaming and a bullet hits the hydraulic line of a forklift holding a bank of speakers and the lift’s arm collapses. In the stands to Trump’s right, former fire chief Corey Comperatore, 50, says to his wife and two daughters, ‘Get down!’ and pushes them towards the ground before he is hit in the head by a bullet. Moments before Trump began his speech the family had been standing off to the side but were offered front row seats. Two other men, David Dutch 57, and James Copenhaver 74, are critically injured by the gunfire. Crooks fires eight times in all. In the midst of the chaos, a woman in a black baseball cap sitting behind the stage calmly gets out her phone and starts filming, a move that ignites the internet with wild conspiracy theories about her involvement in the shooting. Others point out that it merely shows how numbed many Americans have become to mass shootings.

6.11pm and 41 seconds
By now the Secret Service are completely screening the former president and in the melee Trump’s shoes have come off. The microphone on the lectern picks up an agent saying: ‘What are we doing? What are we doing? Where are we going?’ The crowd are confused, some are filming on their phones, some grab their children and run for the exits, others point in the direction of the AGR factory building.

6.11pm and 50 seconds
Over the screams there is the sound of a single gunshot as Crooks is shot dead by a Secret Service sniper who according to one eyewitness, virtually ‘blew his head off’. Crooks left a bullet proof vest inside his car, leading investigators to believe he intended to die that day. A Secret Service agent shielding Donald Trump says to his colleagues: ‘Go around to the spare. Go around to the spare.’ (A spare is a spare SUV limousine.) In the stands Corey Comperatore’s wife Helen screams, ‘He’s been shot! He’s down!’ Emergency Room doctor Jim Sweetland hears her shout and rushes over to find the firefighter on the floor wedged between two benches, with blood and brain matter everywhere. With the help of others, he gets Cory on to a bench so he can treat him, but Cory isn’t breathing so Dr Sweetland carries out CPR while someone else applies pressure to the headwound.

6.12pm and 6 seconds
Two fully armed and armoured members of the Hawkeye Secret Service Counter Assault team take positions beside the stage. The agents around Trump are reluctant to move in case the would-be assassin strikes again, but then they get confirmation in their earpieces. An agent says: ‘Shooter’s down. Shooter’s down.’

6.12pm and 33 seconds
Trump says to the agents around him, ‘Let me get my shoes.’ One replies, ‘Sir, we’ve got to move to the car, sir,’ but Trump insists they get his shoes first so they are thrown off the stage towards the spare limo and an agent picks up his MAGA hat. Press photographers have surrounded the huddled group, capturing pictures of blood running down the side of Trump’s face.

6.12pm and 47 seconds
The agents are about to rush Trump off stage, but he recognises the power of the moment and tells them, ‘Wait, wait, wait!’ Trump then stands up with his hair dishevelled and fist pumps the crowd mouthing, ‘Fight, fight, fight!’ They roar their relief. Veteran photojournalist Evan Vucci who has taken pictures in riots and warzones has sprinted to the side of the stage where he reckons the agents will lead Trump to safety. He said later: ‘In my head, I just kept saying to myself, ‘Slow down, slow down. Compose, compose.’ As an agent looks right down the lens, and as a bloodied Trump raises his fist with the Stars and Stripes flying behind him, Vucci takes an iconic photo. The Secret Service agents can’t delay any longer and help Trump down the steps towards the waiting limo. Trump raises his fist one final time and gets in.

6.14pm
After Dr Sweetland has carried out of CPR on Corey Comperatore for two minutes, a Pennsylvania state trooper taps the medic on the shoulder and together with another officer picks up the wounded man, in Sweetland’s words, ‘like a rag doll’ and on to a stretcher. All Sweetland can say to reassure the firefighter’s distressed family is ‘Corey’s going to go to a place where he can get help.’ Around them everyone is subdued. Trump supporter Saurabh Sharma told a reporter: ‘It wasn’t like what you’d expect out of a crowd that just experienced something like this, everyone was really quiet. ‘There were a few women crying. They were saying, “I can’t believe they tried to kill him”.’

6.30pm
Donald Trump arrives at the Butler Memorial Hospital and staff carry out several tests including a CT scan which all come back normal. Ronny Jackson, who served as Trump’s White House doctor, told reporters later that Trump was missing part of his ear. ‘He was lucky. It was far enough away from his head that there was no concussive effects from the bullet. ‘And it just took the top of his ear off, a little bit of the top of his ear, as it passed through.’

8.42pm
Trump sends out a message on his Truth Social website thanking the Secret Service and law enforcement for their rapid response. ‘I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. ‘It is incredible that such an act can take place in our country.’ Soon after, his motorcade pulls away from the hospital escorted by police.

11pm
Matthew Crooks calls the local police to report his son missing. He tells them that Thomas had asked to borrow a rifle for a trip to a shooting range and said he’d be home at 1pm but hadn’t returned. Soon after, the FBI arrive to search the Crooks’ house. A shocked Matthew Crooks tells news network CNN that he is trying to figure out ‘what the hell is going on’.

Aftermath
Even after a thorough search of Thomas Crooks’ mobile phone and computer, his motive for wanting to assassinate Donald Trump continues to mystify the investigators. It was revealed that Crooks was a member of the Republican Party and although a loner at school and college he had impressed his teachers with his conscientious work. There remains widespread anger that the Secret Service had not apprehended Crooks sooner and had allowed Trump to take the stage despite there being a threat. Leading Republicans have called for Secret Service director Kim Cheatle to resign. Senator John Barrasso said: ‘Someone has died. The President was almost killed. The head of the Secret Service needs to go.’ David Dutch and James Copenhaver survived the shooting but firefighter Corey Comperatore died from his wounds. A GoFundMe page for his family has so far raised more than $6 million (£4.6 million).

Part One – Local and National News Review

Matt O’Branain from the Julian Assange campaign joins Tony and Martin. Matt, from NZ, had been campaigning to free Julian Assange for many years and came to UK for this reason. Meet the activist who has worn an orange jumpsuit every day for two years “If we can’t have journalism that ends wars, what the hell are we doing?” A man, now living in Bristol, has been wearing an orange jumpsuit every day for the last two years. Matt O Branain wears clothing resembling those worn by prison inmates to raise awareness over the ongoing Julian Assange extradition case. Originally from New Zealand, Matt arrived in the UK two years ago after organising a human chain for Assange with fellow supporters. Matt – who engages in creative forms of protest to help raise awareness of the Assange case – is currently planning on performing a Haka dance outside the High Court in London. Mr Assange, who founded Wikileaks, is currently being held in Belmarsh prison in London after being charged by the US government under the Espionage Act for publishing thousands of classified diplomatic documents, including the Iraq and Afghan war logs. Mr Assange will attend the High Court in London this Monday (May, 20, 2024) which could conclude a 13-year legal battle over his extradition to the US. The Assange campaigner said his dedication to the cause began four years ago when he was still living in New Zealand and working as a Media Design teacher. At the time, he co-founded his own organisation to raise awareness and wrote letters to various politicians in New Zealand and Australia. He initially set up a crowdfunder to travel to the UK and has since relied on a network of Assange supporters to help fund his full-time activism. He has been living in Bristol for almost a year and regularly attends the pro-Palestine demonstrations locally. Over the last few years, his orange jumpsuit and ‘free assange’ sign that he always wears around his neck has attracted attention from members of the public. But since Israel began bombing Gaza seven months ago, the response from the public to his standard explanation for wearing the costume has changed. Matt said: “When I used to tell people that there’s an award-winning journalist in jail in London for exposing US war crimes, people used to look at me blankly. But now because of Gaza, people have seen images of children’s mutilated bodies on their phones and they know what a war crime looks like, their response is shock.”…

Matt recently met General Petraeus and asked him whether the incarceration of Julian Assange was good for America. It was Matt’s idea in 2022 to have a human chain around Belmarsh high-security prison where Julian was being held but DEA and Stop The War SWP boss John Rees changed it to the Houses of Parliament. Aucklander Inspires Demonstration Around British Parliament To Free Julian Assange, Aucklander Matt Ó Branáin has inspired a historic demonstration in London on October 8th, to free jailed Australian journalist Julian Assange. Matt’s proposal to #HugBelmarsh prison with a Human Chain of 1,100 people went viral. Due to some difficulties, it has turned into a #FreeAssangeHumanChain of 5,000 to surround British Parliament, where the decision to free Julian can be made. Matt has launched a campaign for kiwis to help him represent New Zealand there. He is asking for help with travel costs and he will add the names of all who donate to special flax ribbons he will weave and take to the event. Matt says ‘I’m really excited at the prospect of getting to London to join this huge event I’ve helped inspire. This is the most crucial Human Rights case this century, and this will go down in history. I feel both humbled and in awe of what a difference any one of us can make, when we inspire others to unite. There’s nothing we can’t do when we stand together.’ Matt says he needs help to pay for his flights because ‘being an activist and also a musician doesn’t pay the bills like it used to.’ Matt was encouraged by other supporters to launch the campaign and represent New Zealand at the event. ‘I’m asking kiwis to get behind me so I can represent them. I know from talking to people everywhere I go, nobody wants an Aussie journalist to die in prison for telling the truth. We gotta get him out. Our Government, Jacinda Ardern, needs to make urgent diplomatic representations to the UK and US, to ensure his release. All our rights are imperilled by his imprisonment, and by the US charges against him. There isn’t a bigger threat to the Western Democratic system than this case.’ Matt will also be part of a public activation in Auckland’s Aotea Square tomorrow, 2pm. He and other supporters will wear orange Guantanamo Bay style prisoner suits, and stand on chairs, like a famous sculpture ‘Anything to Say?’ by artist Davide Dormino, portraying Assange, Snowden and Manning. The group will invite passers-by to get up on a chair alongside them, and share photos on social media to highlight the case. Matt is a teacher, media-designer and musician, who became intensely engaged on the Assange case when he read the findings of the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture Nils Melzer, which concluded that Julian was being ‘tortured to death’ by the UK, US and Sweden, for revealing Human Rights crimes, and the charges against him will make it a crime to reveal state crimes. Julian is detained in solitary confinement in London’s Belmarsh Prison, and hundred’s of Doctors warn he is likely to die in the next few months if not freed. Since then Matt has devoted the vast majority of his time to campaigning on this issue. Matt formed Aotearoa 4 Assange with a group of activists, lawyers, and journalists. He recently committed to wearing what he calls ‘Gitmo Chic’ every day till Julian is free. It’s an orange Guantanamo Bay prisoner suit, and chalkboard sign. Matt says ‘It’s been starting conversations everywhere I go. Kiwis are not at all happy when they hear about what’s happening.’ Matt said he ‘wanted a way to show how important this case is, and express that I don’t feel safe or free if an Australian journalist can be tortured to death for telling the truth. I wouldn’t hesitate to reveal the Human Rights Julian revealed. So I’m a criminal too.’

No comeback for trigger-happy Israeli killers. Plus 972 Magazine – IDF troops have no rules and can shoot as they please. False flag Buca massacre. ‘I’m bored, so I shoot’: The Israeli army’s approval of free-for-all violence in Gaza Israeli soldiers describe the near-total absence of firing regulations in the Gaza war, with troops shooting as they please, setting homes ablaze, and leaving corpses on the streets — all with their commanders’ permission. In early June, Al Jazeera aired a series of disturbing videos revealing what it described as “summary executions”: Israeli soldiers shooting dead several Palestinians walking near the coastal road in the Gaza Strip, on three separate occasions. In each case, the Palestinians appeared unarmed and did not pose any imminent threat to the soldiers. Such footage is rare, due to the severe constraints faced by journalists in the besieged enclave and the constant danger to their lives. But these executions, which did not appear to have any security rationale, are consistent with the testimonies of six Israeli soldiers who spoke to +972 Magazine and Local Call following their release from active duty in Gaza in recent months. Corroborating the testimonies of Palestinian eyewitnesses and doctors throughout the war, the soldiers described being authorized to open fire on Palestinians virtually at will, including civilians. The six sources — all except one of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity — recounted how Israeli soldiers routinely executed Palestinian civilians simply because they entered an area that the military defined as a “no-go zone.” The testimonies paint a picture of a landscape littered with civilian corpses, which are left to rot or be eaten by stray animals; the army only hides them from view ahead of the arrival of international aid convoys, so that “images of people in advanced stages of decay don’t come out.” Two of the soldiers also testified to a systematic policy of setting Palestinian homes on fire after occupying them.

What really happened to free Julian Assange after Australian MPs came to Washington and the UK court hearings? Assange plea came after warning that U.S. would lose extradition fight After years of Justice Department efforts to bring the WikiLeaks founder to the United States to stand trial, the near-collapse of the case in a British court sent prosecutors hurtling toward a plea deal. On April 4, a Justice Department attorney in Europe sent a dire message to colleagues back home: Their five-year battle to bring Julian Assange from Britain to the United States to stand trial for publishing hundreds of thousands of secret diplomatic and military files was likely to fail. Sign up for Fact Checker, our weekly review of what’s true, false or in-between in politics. If a deal was not made with the WikiLeaks founder before a U.K. court’s April 16 deadline to provide assurances related to free speech, they would lose all their leverage and possibly their British attorneys, who increasingly saw the case as unwinnable. “The urgency here has now reached a critical point,” the Justice Department trial attorney wrote, in an email reviewed by The Washington Post. “The case will head to appeal and we will lose.” For months, according to multiple people familiar with the case, the U.S. trial team attorneys had been pushing senior officials at the Justice Department to approve a deal that would have involved Assange pleading guilty to multiple misdemeanors, which he could do remotely, rather than in the Virginia court where he had been charged in 2018. A WikiLeaks representative would then appear in court and plead guilty to a felony on behalf of the nonprofit organization. But top officials in the Justice Department did not act on the idea. “Time is short and my understanding is that the present plea proposal is currently on the [deputy attorney general’s] desk,” another member of the trial team emailed to leaders at the Justice Department’s counterintelligence and export control unit on April 4. Forced into action, the United States managed to stave off Assange’s appeal for two more months. In the end, the plea agreement allowed Assange to return home to Australia after he admitted on a remote Western Pacific island to a felony violation of the Espionage Act. The near-collapse of his prosecution for the 2010 and 2011 exposures of American actions overseas shows how the case was troubled from beginning to end by the implications for free-speech rights at home and by fraught interactions with foreign courts. And it fractured an already contentious relationship between prosecutors on the case, who had been pushing for a plea deal for the past year, and senior officials in the Justice Department who held out for a felony conviction for Assange.

WIKILEAK ENDS THE IRAQ OCCUPATION 1: WikiLeaks website publishes classified military documents from Iraq By CNN Wire Staff October 25, 2010 Washington (CNN) — The whistle-blower website WikiLeaks published nearly 400,000 classified military documents from the Iraq war on Friday, calling it the largest classified military leak in history. The latest round of leaked documents provides a new picture of how many Iraqi civilians have been killed, a new window on the role that Iran has played in supporting Iraqi militants and many accounts of abuse by Iraqi’s army and police, according to The New York Times. The Times was one of a handful of news organizations that was provided early access to the papers. According to new documents, the vast majority of slain civilians were killed by other Iraqis. The U.S. military is notifying Iraqis named in the documents, Pentagon Press Secretary Geoff Morrell told CNN. “There are 300 names of Iraqis in here that we think would be particularly endangered by their exposure,” he said. “We have passed that information on to U.S. Forces Iraq. They are in the process right now of contacting those Iraqis to try to safeguard them.” The Pentagon had not previously warned Iraqi civilians who have cooperated with the United States that their names may be posted on the Internet. “We don’t want to start notifying people and then find out that their names aren’t in any of these documents that are released,” Col. David Lapan, a top Pentagon spokesman, said earlier Friday. “Why put people through the trouble and the concern for no reason?” The Pentagon denounced the release, which WikiLeaks said comprised 391,832 reports. “This is all classified secret information never designed to be exposed to the public,” Morrell told CNN Friday. “Our greatest fear is that it puts our troops in even greater danger than they inherently are on these battlefields. That it will expose tactics, techniques and procedures — how they operate on the battlefield, how they respond under attack, the capabilities of our equipment … how we cultivate sources (and) how we work with Iraqis.”

WIKILEAK ENDS THE IRAQ OCCUPATION 2 Obama: Iraq war will be over by year’s end; troops coming home CNN Fri October 21, 2011 President Barack Obama on Friday announced that virtually all U.S. troops will come home from Iraq by the end of the year – at which point he can declare an end to America’s long and costly war in that Middle Eastern nation. … …The negotiations were strained following WikiLeaks’ release of a diplomatic cable that alleged Iraqi civilians, including children, were killed in a 2006 raid by American troops rather than in an airstrike as the U.S. military initially reported. U.S. troops have already started the drawdown. For instance, a brigade from Fort Bliss, Texas, that was originally scheduled to be among the last to leave Iraq was being pulled out of the country months ahead of its planned departure, military officials told CNN last week. Besides withdrawing more units, others will not head overseas as planned. That includes about 775 Georgia-based soldiers from the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division, which announced Friday it will not deploy to Iraq in December as previously scheduled. Gen. Lloyd J. Austin III, commander of U.S. forces in Iraq, has said that Iraq wouldn’t be able to defend its borders if U.S. troops pulled out and also questioned Iraqi forces ability to defend its airspace. But Panetta, en route to Indonesia, said history shows that Iraq will be ready. “We’ve taken out now about 100,000 troops and yet the level of violence has remained relatively low,” the defense secretary said. “And I think that’s a reflection of the fact that the Iraqis have developed a very important capability here to be able to respond to security threats within their own country.” Regardless, officials insisted that the drastic pullback of troops does not mean an end to the U.S. government’s presence in Iraq. …

Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital hit in Kiev, Ukraine – false flag? Other false flags involving NATO. Kremlin says, without stating evidence, that Ukrainian fire hit Kyiv children’s hospital MOSCOW, July 9 (Reuters) – Russia denied on Tuesday that it had attacked a Kyiv children’s hospital and said Ukrainian anti-missile fire was to blame for Monday’s strike. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov repeated Moscow’s insistence that it does not attack civilian targets in Ukraine. Ukrainian authorities say Russia struck the main children’s hospital in Kyiv with a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile and rained missiles on other cities across Ukraine on Monday, killing at least 41 civilians in the deadliest wave of airstrikes for months. The head of the U.N. human rights monitoring mission in Ukraine said its analysis was that the strike was likely caused by a direct hit from a Russian missile. Strikes are carried out against critical infrastructure facilities, against military targets that are in one way or another related to the military potential of the regime.”

‘Presstitute’ book by Udolf Ulkotte – press infiltrated by secret services. TikTok good for getting information out. Need internet free from censorship with control over privacy. Presstitutes Embedded in the Pay of the CIA: A Confession from the Profession (2019) by Dr. Udo Ulfkotte (Author), John-Paul Leonard 18 months on the bestseller list in Germany. Now it’s finally here! Ever get the feeling the media tries to manipulate or lie to you? You have plenty of company! And you are right — the facts are in. A world-class media insider has blown the whistle on what really goes on inside the media industry. Author Udo Ulfkotte was a respected journalist for 17 years with Germany’s newspaper of record, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. He begins this explosive exposé by first owning up to his own career, where he had to sell out to have the job. He then reveals the deceptive tricks and secret networks of power within the media. How perks are used to bribe journalists and opinion makers to twist their reporting. How the tone of corruption is set from the top — play along or quit. How the long arm of the NATO press office enrolls the media to get Europe to support more foreign wars. Ulfkotte names hundreds of names and gives you a behind-the-scenes look at the organizations that influence the German media with one-sided propaganda, such as The Atlantic Bridge, Trilateral Commission, German Marshall Fund, CFR, and Aspen Institute. He unmasks the intelligence agencies behind these lobbies groups and the propaganda techniques they use, such as US Embassy grants for projects to influence European public opinion. When the CIA holds the hand that holds the pen Would you be surprised to learn that spies sit and write articles in newspaper editorial offices? Which are then published on op-ed pages under the names of well-known journalists? Or which journalists receive bribes for their reporting? Have you heard how prestigious “journalism prizes” are a reward system for cooperation? Much as “Heroes of Labor” were honored for writing the best communist propaganda in the former East bloc. Seen from the inside, the difference between journalist and propagandist isn’t as far as you might like. The elite owners of the media feel it’s their right to think for us, and to mold public opinion to their agendas. Their Freedom of the Press is Freedom to Censor the news. Our nation depends on the media to understand our world, just as each one of us depends on our eyes and ears. The media are our senses. When they hide the truth, or lie to us, they put us all in danger. A million people died in Iraq, Libya and Syria because the press didn’t just report the news, didn’t just lie about the news, but they invented and sold the events that served as pretexts for wars. The author spent years in the Middle East, surviving an attack with chemical weapons supplied by US and German firms. This book is a veteran’s guide to the media spider’s web. It shows how the system works, sharpens your common sense skepticism, and increases your immunity to the controlled media’s attempts to do our thinking for us. You will gain a whole new perspective on media reports. A good idea of how much you can believe the news on TV or the radio: almost nothing. Ulfkotte dissects the German media establishment, which media outlets are owned by political parties, the journalists that are under their influence, and what keeps them there. You will see how whole countries are manipulated – and who is pulling the strings and why. Here is the bad news about the news: our idea of a free press with a broad spectrum of opinion is pure fantasy. Very often, what is called the “news” is simply brainwashing.

Diamonds in the Cesspoolways to get best out of internet. Armies of trolls – Brigade 77 and Unit 8200. Russia 1/2 million casualties in Ukraine war? Inside the British Army’s secret information warfare machine They are soldiers, but the 77th Brigade edit videos, record podcasts and write viral posts. Welcome to the age of information warfare A barbed-wire fence stretched off far to either side. A Union flag twisted in a gust of wind, and soldiers strode in and out of a squat guard’s hut in the middle of the road. Through the hut, and under a row of floodlights, I walked towards a long line of drab, low-rise brick buildings. It was the summer of 2017, and on this military base nestled among the hills of Berkshire, I was visiting a part of the British Army unlike any other. They call it the 77th Brigade. They are the troops fighting Britain’s information wars. “If everybody is thinking alike then somebody isn’t thinking,” was written in foot-high letters across a whiteboard in one of the main atriums of the base. Over to one side, there was a suite full of large, electronic sketch pads and multi-screened desktops loaded with digital editing software. The men and women of the 77th knew how to set up cameras, record sound, edit videos. Plucked from across the military, they were proficient in graphic design, social media advertising, and data analytics. Some may have taken the army’s course in Defence Media Operations, and almost half were reservists from civvy street, with full time jobs in marketing or consumer research. From office to office, I found a different part of the Brigade busy at work. One room was focussed on understanding audiences: the makeup, demographics and habits of the people they wanted to reach. Another was more analytical, focussing on creating “attitude and sentiment awareness” from large sets of social media data. Another was full of officers producing video and audio content. Elsewhere, teams of intelligence specialists were closely analysing how messages were being received and discussing how to make them more resonant. Explaining their work, the soldiers used phrases I had heard countless times from digital marketers: “key influencers”, “reach”, “traction”. You normally hear such words at viral advertising studios and digital research labs. But the skinny jeans and wax moustaches were here replaced by the crisply ironed shirts and light patterned camouflage of the British Army. Their surroundings were equally incongruous – the 77th’s headquarters were a mix of linoleum flooring, long corridors and swinging fire doors. More Grange Hill than Menlo Park. Next to a digital design studio, soldiers were having a tea break, a packet of digestives lying open on top of a green metallic ammo box. Another sign on the wall declared, “Behavioural change is our USP [unique selling point]”. What on Earth was happening? “If you track where UK manpower is deployed, you can take a good guess at where this kind of ‘influence’ activity happens,” an information warfare officer (not affiliated with the 77th) told me later, under condition of anonymity. “A document will come from the Ministry of Defence that will have broad guidance and themes to follow.” He explains that each military campaign now also has – or rather is – a marketing campaign too. Ever since Nato troops were deployed to the Baltics in 2017, Russian propaganda has been deployed too, alleging that Nato soldiers there are rapists, looters, little different from a hostile occupation. One of the goals of Nato information warfare was to counter this kind of threat: sharply rebutting damaging rumours, and producing videos of Nato troops happily working with Baltic hosts….

Battleground drones – AI swarm drones. ‘Where’s Daddy?’ drone attacks by IDF in Gaza. Use of AI in multiple surveillance – war position. Israel’s ‘Where’s Daddy?’ AI system helps target suspected Hamas militants when they’re at home with their families, report says An Israeli AI system called “Where’s Daddy?” tracks suspected Hamas militants to their homes. Civilians are often “collateral damage” in the following strikes, one unnamed officer told +972 Magazine and Local Call. The IDF has said it “makes various efforts to reduce harm to civilians to the extent feasible.” As civilian casualties continue to mount in the wartorn Gaza Strip, reports of Israel’s use of artificial intelligence (AI) in its targeting of Hamas militants are facing increasing scrutiny. A report by the Israeli outlets +972 Magazine and Local Call earlier this month said that Israeli forces had relied heavily on two AI tools so far in the conflict — “Lavender” and “Where’s Daddy.” While “Lavender” identifies suspected Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) militants and their homes, “Where’s Daddy” tracks these targets and informs Israeli forces when they return home, per the report, which cites six Israeli intelligence officers who had used AI systems for operations in Gaza, including “Where’s Daddy?” “We were not interested in killing [Hamas] operatives only when they were in a military building or engaged in a military activity,” one of the officers told +972 and Local Call. “On the contrary, the IDF bombed them in homes without hesitation, as a first option. It’s much easier to bomb a family’s home. The system is built to look for them in these situations,” they added. Another source told the publications that this method had often led to the deaths of civilians, describing them as “collateral damage.” The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement: “The IDF outright rejects the claim regarding any policy to kill tens of thousands of people in their homes.” Misidentification The “Lavender” system is also known sometimes to identify targets with tenuous or no links to militant groups, the sources said, adding that it made “errors” in around 10% of cases. Those erroneous identifications have included people with the same name or nickname as a militant or who were in possession of devices previously used by a militant, the sources added. Brianna Rosen, a senior fellow at Just Security and a strategy and policy fellow at the University of Oxford’s Blavatnik School of Government, estimates the margin of error to be even higher. “Israel’s permissive targeting criteria and errors in AI output are likely compounding” the risks to civilians, Rosen said, adding that those risks to civilians increase “as war speeds up.” “So target verification and other precautionary obligations required under international law are much harder to fulfill, implying more civilians will be misidentified and mistakenly killed,” she continued. Officers also told +972 Magazine and Local Call report that human input in the target identification process was minimal, with one saying they essentially “rubber stamp” the machine’s picks after little more than “20 seconds” of consideration — which was largely to double-check the target is male. …

Turn Key? Turnkey Tyranny: Surveillance and the Terror State Connecting Edward Snowden’s revelations about NSA surveillance with inequality, climate change and the “war on terror,” artist Trevor Paglen argues that future administrations will respond to environmental and economic crises with the authoritarian tools of a rising “Terror State.” By exposing NSA programs like PRISM and Boundless Informant, Edward Snowden has revealed that we are not moving toward a surveillance state: we live in the heart of one. The 30-year-old whistleblower told The Guardian’s Glenn Greenwald that the NSA’s data collection created the possibility of a “turnkey tyranny,” whereby a malevolent future government could create an authoritarian state with the flick of a switch. The truth is actually worse. Within the context of current economic, political and environmental trends, the existence of a surveillance state doesn’t just create a theoretical possibility of tyranny with the turn of a key—it virtually guarantees it. For more than a decade, we’ve seen the rise of what we might call a “Terror State,” of which the NSA’s surveillance capabilities represent just one part. Its rise occurs at a historical moment when state agencies and programs designed to enable social mobility, provide economic security and enhance civic life have been targeted for significant cuts. The last three decades, in fact, have seen serious and consistent attacks on social security, food assistance programs, unemployment benefits and education and health programs. As the social safety net has shrunk, the prison system has grown. The United States now imprisons its own citizens at a higher rate than any other country in the world. While civic parts of the state have been in retreat, institutions of the Terror State have grown dramatically. In the name of an amorphous and never-ending “war on terror,” the Department of Homeland Security was created, while institutions such as the CIA, FBI and NSA, and darker parts of the military like the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) have expanded considerably in size and political influence. The world has become a battlefield—a stage for extralegal renditions, indefinite detentions without trial, drone assassination programs and cyberwarfare. We have entered an era of secret laws, classified interpretations of laws and the retroactive “legalization” of classified programs that were clearly illegal when they began. Funding for the secret parts of the state comes from a “black budget” hidden from Congress—not to mention the people—that now tops $100 billion annually. Finally, to ensure that only government-approved “leaks” appear in the media, the Terror State has waged an unprecedented war on whistleblowers, leakers and journalists. All of these state programs and capacities would have been considered aberrant only a short time ago. Now, they are the norm. Terrorism works by instilling so much fear in a society that the society begins to collapse on itself. Politicians claim that the Terror State is necessary to defend democratic institutions from the threat of terrorism. But there is a deep irony to this rhetoric. Terrorism does not pose, has never posed and never will pose an existential threat to the United States. Terrorists will never have the capacity to “take away our freedom.” Terrorist outfits have no armies with which to invade, and no means to impose martial law. They do not have their hands on supra-national power levers like the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. They cannot force nations into brutal austerity programs and other forms of economic subjugation. But while terrorism cannot pose an existential threat to the United States, the institutions of a Terror State absolutely can. Indeed, their continued expansion poses a serious threat to principles of democracy and equality.

War on Gaza: Death toll from Israeli assault could exceed 186,000, Lancet warns Letter published by experts in the medical journal estimated that some 10,000 people could still be buried in the rubble in Gaza – A letter written by experts and published in the medical journal, the Lancet, estimates that the actual death toll of Palestinians killed in Gaza could exceed 186,000. The official death toll of Palestinians killed since Israel’s war on Gaza began in October is 38,153, according to Gaza’s health ministry. However, the letter emphasised that this figure is likely a dramatic underestimate and does not account for the thousands of people buried under the rubble or for the mounting “indirect” deaths as a result of Israel’s destruction of Gaza’s food distribution, healthcare and sanitation systems. “The total death toll is expected to be large given the intensity of this conflict; destroyed health-care infrastructure; severe shortages of food, water, and shelter; the population’s inability to flee to safe places; and the loss of funding to UNRWA, one of the very few humanitarian organizations still active in the Gaza Strip,” the letter said. The letter estimated that the number of bodies still buried in the rubble is likely to exceed 10,000, as 35 percent of Gaza’ buildings have been destroyed, according to UN data. Citing the transparency watchdog Airwars, which conducts detailed investigations of incidents of civilian harm in areas of conflict, the names of identifiable victims are often omitted from the ministry’s fatalities lists. It added that data collection is becoming increasingly difficult for the Gaza health ministry.

Declassified – US covert flights to Israel from Cyprus airbase – UK planes with weapons for Israelis – Revealed: America’s secret special forces flights to Israel from UK base on Cyprus – The US military has been flying covert planes to Israel from RAF Akrotiri since the bombing of Gaza began, Declassified has discovered. Unmarked planes are being used by US forces to fly from Cyprus to Israel, including as recently as June 26 The aircraft are believed to be used by highly secretive 427th Special Operations Squadron and the CIA Declassified also finds 26 huge US military transport planes have landed at UK base on Cyprus, believed to be carrying weapons for Israel Revelations could further implicate British ministers in war crimes The US Air Force has been sending unmarked planes from Britain’s base on Cyprus to Israel since it began bombing Gaza, it can be revealed. The planes are all C-295 and CN-235 aircraft, which are believed to be used by American special forces. Declassified has found 18 of these aircraft which have gone from the sprawling British air base on Cyprus, RAF Akrotiri, to Israel’s coastal city Tel Aviv since October 7. Akrotiri is the key node in the international effort to arm and provide logistical support for Israel’s assault on Gaza. But the UK government has always refused to divulge any information about US activities at Akrotiri, which is known to include transporting weapons to Israel. Asked in May how many US Air Force (USAF) flights had taken off from the base since October 7, defence minister Leo Docherty said: “The Ministry of Defence does not comment on the operations of our Allies.” But Declassified discovered the unmarked planes that flew from Akrotiri to Israel from November to June have a serial number showing they are operated by the USAF. Most of these journeys had the flight number GONZO62. Six more unmarked C-130 planes have gone from Akrotiri to Tel Aviv since the bombing of Gaza began, which are believed to be USAF, but it was not possible for Declassified to locate their operator. The C-130 can carry 128 combat troops and almost 20 tonnes of cargo. The new information could further implicate British ministers in war crimes in Gaza. In November 2023, a US military official revealed that American special forces were stationed in Israel and “actively helping the Israelis”. A spokesperson for the UK Ministry of Defence would only tell Declassified: “In response to the situation in Israel and Gaza, we are working with international partners to de-escalate the conflict, reinforce stability and support humanitarian efforts in the region. Any use of UK bases will be in line with these objectives.”

Crispin Blunt saying UK could be committing war crimes by supporting Israel Crispin Blunt released under investigation Reigate MP Crispin Blunt has been released under investigation following his arrest last year. He was detained by police in October on suspicion of rape and possession of controlled substances and released on conditional bail pending further inquiries. Mr Blunt, who served as a justice minister between 2010 and 2012, was re-bailed in January, having previously identified himself as the man detained by the force and released on conditional bail. In a statement on Tuesday, Surrey Police said a man in his 60s who had been arrested on October 25 in Horley on suspicion of rape and possession of controlled substances has not had his bail extended and has been released under investigation. The decision not to re-bail Mr Blunt will be further reviewed in July, Surrey Police said, adding that the investigation remains ongoing. Mr Blunt, 63, has said he will “co-operate fully” with the investigation and is “confident” he will not be charged. He was first elected to parliament in 1997 as a Conservative. He had the Tory whip withdrawn following the arrest and currently stands as an independent MP.

Declassified – Israel money to Labour Mug shots. Kier Starmer track record. Apparatchiks of Political Parties have destroyed political morals by extracting faith from major parties. Israel lobby funded half of Keir Starmer’s cabinet Exclusive: Labour’s top team has accepted hundreds of thousands of pounds from pro-Israel funders. Pro-Israel lobbyists have donated to 13 out of Labour’s 25 cabinet members since they were first elected to parliament, Declassified can reveal. The list of recipients includes prime minister Keir Starmer, his deputy Angela Rayner, chancellor Rachel Reeves, foreign secretary David Lammy and home secretary Yvette Cooper. Jonathan Reynolds, who will oversee arms exports to Israel as UK trade secretary, is another beneficiary, alongside Labour’s election mastermind Pat McFadden, whose responsibilities now include national security. Some of the donations were provided by Labour Friends of Israel (LFI), a lobby group which takes MPs on “fact-finding” missions to the region. Reeves, McFadden, Reynolds and technology secretary Peter Kyle were recently listed as vice-chairs of LFI. Other major funders include pro-Israel businessmen Trevor Chinn and Stuart Roden. The total value of the donations amounts to over £300,000. Labour Friends of Israel LFI does not disclose its funders, but was revealed during an undercover Al Jazeera documentary in 2017 to have close relations with the Israeli embassy in London. The organisation’s parliamentary officer, Michael Rubin, was secretly filmed saying LFI and the Israeli embassy “work really closely together, but a lot of it is behind the scenes”. Joan Ryan, a former Labour MP and LFI chair, was also filmed discussing a potential £1m payment with an Israeli embassy official. Seven members of Starmer’s cabinet have accepted LFI funding to visit Israel, including Reeves, Lammy, and health secretary Wes Streeting. While Starmer has not received funding from LFI, he has addressed a number of the organisation’s events. In a keynote speech to its annual lunch in November 2021, he repeated the racist and colonial adage that Israel was founded by “social democrats who made the desert flower”. In October 2023, Starmer said that LFI was “an invaluable source of energy and ideas for me and my team”. His health chief Streeting meets regularly with LFI inside Westminster, according to Middle East Eye. Israel lobby organisations have also funded advisers to Starmer’s cabinet team.

11 donors boosted Labour Party – Express. Rachel Reeves and private equity story. PR system in NZ. FPTP voting system. Bodies in bags on Clifton Bridge. Keir Starmer’s Labour Party boosted by £19.5m from just 11 donors – this is who they are We have taken a look at the 11 donors who have boosted the Labour Party. Labour has received a massive £19.5million cash injection from 11 donors, we have taken a look at who these people are and why they are boosting the party’s funds. Labour has accepted 1,949 cash donations totalling £53.3m since Keir Starmer became leader in April 2020, according to the latest figures on the Electoral Commission website. As of early July, it had received 39 more, totalling almost £9.3m, according to the Telegraph. Here is a look at the 11 donors who have contributed £19.5m: Lord David Sainsbury of Turville: £7.6m Lord Sainsbury has donated over £40m to political parties since 2004 – including nearly £16m to Labour. From 1992 to 1997, he served as the Chairman of Sainsbury’s (a supermarket chain established by his great-grandfather John James Sainsbury in 1869) and was made a life peer in 1997 as a member of the Labour Party. He’s handed over £5.1m during the Starmer years, plus another £2.5m cheque that’s waiting to be accepted. Ecotricity £3.3m The Labour Party has accepted donations from company Ecotricity which was founded by Dale Vince, a wealthy climate change activist. Mr Vince has also funded Just Stop Oil, an environmental group, and has also given cash to Greenpeace and Extinction Rebellion. Speaking to Sky News ahead of the Election, Mr Vince has said he donated to Labour to “help them win, to help them into Government so they have the chance to deliver their agenda, which is my agenda, social justice and a green economy”.

Water bills to increase – but not enough. Carla Denyer – water story. Private water companies need to tap out, it’s time to nationalise It is deplorable that if private water companies get their way, your bill could be rising by a whopping 44% – all while they’re still paying their shareholders dividends. That would mean an extra £183 coming out of your pocket over the next five years. Regulator Ofwat has stepped in and said it wants firms to limit rises for households to an average of £19 per year (which is 21%) until 2030. Of course, the water companies have warned that the regulator has ‘got this wrong’ and that increase won’t be enough to sufficiently address problems like sewage leaks. The proposed price hikes can be challenged by the water firms, with a final decision due at the end of the year. But I believe these demands should not be accepted and this reward for failure must not continue. That’s why the Green Party has called on new PM Keir Starmer to take water companies into public hands. The provision of such a basic human need as water should not be based on profit. Public ownership is a matter of both social and environmental justice. It is also a pragmatic necessity. Payouts in dividends to shareholders of water companies between 1991 and 2019 amounted to £57billion. This is nearly half the amount spent on investment in infrastructure (£123bn) over the same period. With water back in public hands, the Government can invest in crumbling infrastructure and in cleaning up our rivers, waterways and coastlines, without such colossal sums leaking out to shareholders and spilling over into fat-cat salaries. But how feasible is it to take water companies into public ownership? About 90% of water services around the world are publicly owned, but over 90% of the English water companies are owned by international investors, private equity funds, and banks, according to lobbying group, We Own It. Taking back control of water is largely a matter of political will. If the Government committed to this course of action, it could use existing regulations to bring failing private companies into becoming publicly owned and publicly accountable. For example, the water regulator has powers to stop the payment of dividends if such payments risk the company’s financial resilience. They can also take enforcement action against water companies that don’t link dividend payments to performance.

Together Declaration – Milliband to ban combustion cars quicker. Are diesel cars more polluting than petrol? The Conversation. Tesla losing value as electric cars have problems Fact Check: are diesel cars really more polluting than petrol cars? Diesel cars have recently become subject to considerable negative publicity thanks to the amount of toxic emissions they produce. Some governments are planning to discourage their use or even ban them from urban areas altogether. Yet some diesel car owners have reacted angrily, arguing they bought the vehicles because they were supposedly the environmentally friendly option. Diesel was promoted as a more environmentally friendly fuel as part of the EU’s response to the 1997 Kyoto Protocol to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, especially carbon dioxide (CO2). Diesel engines are “lean-burn”, meaning they use less fuel and more air to get the same performance as a petrol engine. So, while diesel fuel contains slightly more carbon (2.68kg CO2/litre) than petrol (2.31kg CO2/litre), overall CO2 emissions of a diesel car tend to be lower. In use, on average, this equates to around 200g CO2/km for petrol and 120g CO2/km for diesel. We want to ensure the knowledge of scientists reaches millions. Join us. But even when governments were promoting diesel cars, we knew there were issues with toxic emissions (those immediately harmful to humans, not CO2). Heating air in an engine produces nitrogen oxides (NO?) which include the toxic nitrogen dioxide (NO2), greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O) and nitric oxide (NO), which reacts with oxygen to form NO2. In a petrol car, these can be cleaned up by a three-way catalytic converter so that it emits on average around 30% less NO? than a diesel car, without after-treatment. We know that long-term exposure to nitric oxide can significantly increase the risk of respiratory problems, and so these emissions have been regulated for some time. The fine particulate matter (PM) that diesel engines produce also causes cancer and can have acute respiratory effects. Particulate filters in car exhausts can reduce PM emissions by more than 90%, but they require good operating conditions and regular maintenance. They can also produce more nitrogen dioxide, making diesel one of the main sources of this toxic gas.

UK missiles to Ukraine – Telegraph. Dual state – security state has a veto. What’s in Covid vaccines?. Covid leaked from Wuhan lab. Sergei Lavrov says what he thinks of Starmer winning election. UK hasn’t allowed Ukraine to use Storm Shadow missiles inside Russia, MoD clarifies Zelensky appears to distance himself from earlier comments after source says no permission has been granted Britain has been forced to clarify it has not given permission for Ukraine to use Storm Shadows to strike inside Russia in an awkward diplomatic moment for Sir Keir Starmer. Downing Street said on Thursday, government policy “had not changed” regarding the deployment of the long-range missiles, despite comments from the Prime Minister that suggested he was loosening restrictions on how the missiles are used. The British Government has allowed Kyiv to fire the missiles against targets in Crimea and mainland Ukraine since they were delivered last year, but has banned the country from using them to hit targets inside Russia. Officials are concerned such a move would escalate the war, and could draw the UK into a conflict with Russia. Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president – who has been meeting world leaders at Nato’s 75th anniversary in Washington – announced on Wednesday evening that he had been granted permission to use strategic cruise missiles in Russia. Posting on X, formerly Twitter, Mr Zelensky shared a photograph of himself and Sir Keir, with the caption: “This morning, I learnt about the permission to use Storm Shadow missiles against military targets in Russian territory. Today, we had the opportunity to discuss the practical implementation of this decision.” Sources confirmed the missile has not been used this year and stressed that Mr Zelensky would have to “seek assurances elsewhere” before Ukraine could fire the cruise missiles into Russian territory. They added that these assurances were not a done deal. A senior defence source said the situation was “more nuanced” than Ukraine’s president had suggested. They added that permission to launch the strategic missile into Russia would require a sign off from three countries, one of which is the United Kingdom. France manufactures the Storm Shadow alongside the UK. “It’s not going to happen,” the source added when asked if Ukraine will fire Storm Shadow into Russia. On Thursday night Sir Keir told the Nato summit that he had “reaffirmed our unshakeable support for Ukraine’s ultimate victory.” He said the alternative was “unthinkable” as he described Russia using “some of the deadliest weapons in its arsenal on innocent children”, when it struck a children’s cancer hospital in Kyiv earlier this week. Sir Keir said Britain would provide £3 billion per year to Ukraine and speed up the delivery of military aid. As the “generational threat” from Russia demands a “generational response”, he confirmed plans to boost British defence spending to 2. 5 per cent of gross per cent of their GDP on defence,” he said. “But in light of the grave threats to our security, we must go further.” Earlier this year Lord Cameron, the former foreign secretary, met president Zelensky in Kyiv, where he made comments about Ukraine’s right to defend itself which were interpreted by Russia as a “dangerous” threat to use British-gifted missiles on Russian territory. Adml Sir Tony Radakin, the Chief of the Defence Staff, later clarified that the cruise missile could only be used inside Crimea and the mainland of Ukraine.

New Security Minister Dan Jarvis – WW3 coming? Russian nuclear missiles.UK has to be ‘incredibly careful’ to avoid direct Russian retaliation – Sir Keir Starmer has told the Ukrainian president that British missiles can be used for defensive strikes against targets inside Russia. We’ve just been speaking with the new security minister, Dan Jarvis, and we started with the news that Sir Keir Starmer has told the Ukrainian president that British missiles can be used for defensive strikes against targets inside Russia. Asked how concerned we should be about Russian retaliation, Mr Jarvis said Ukraine is “a massively important security issue” and the UK has “a massive stake” in what happens in the war. “We will want to work closely with all of our allies to make sure that our partners in Ukraine get the support that they need to respond to Putin’s illegal invasion.” Pushed on the question of Russian retaliation, he replied: “Of course, we’ve got to guard against that, and of course, we’ve got to be incredibly careful.”

Scott Ritter new book ‘Covering Ukraine’. Stupidity and desperation of comparing Putin to Hitler – Alistair Crook as we explores this critical question and uncover the profound shifts in global geopolitics. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s stark declaration to the U.S. ambassador marks the dawn of a low-intensity conflict era with the United States. We’ll break down Russia’s strategic responses, examining the formation of an alternative security framework with BRICS nations and other nuclear powers. This episode promises to shed light on Russia’s perspective regarding Western intentions to escalate the conflict in Ukraine and the broader consequences for international relations.  Listen closely as we dissect the West’s fundamental misunderstandings of Russian policy and the intricate web of global commodity management. Learn about the United States’ manipulation of commodity prices for financial and political leverage and Russia’s potential pivot towards a new security and financial architecture. Alistair Crook provides keen insights into whether Western leaders grasp the enormity of losing Russia and the significant transformations this loss entails, including the creation of a potential BRICS currency and the hurdles of expanding its membership. We also tackle the internal disconnect between Western leaders and their electorates, challenging the capability of Western policymakers to understand and respond to the global shifts initiated by Russia and other rising powers.

Kremlin responds to Biden’s latest Putin insult – The US president didn’t just make endless gaffes, Joe Biden also called the Russian leader a “murderous madman” at the NATO summit in Washington US President Joe Biden’s latest insult of Russian President Vladimir Putin is “unacceptable,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists on Friday. During a press conference following this week’s NATO summit in Washington, Biden stated that “some of the oldest and deepest fears” in Europe had “roared back to life because once again a murderous madman was on the march,” referring to the Russian president. Biden suggested that the Ukraine conflict has been “a rude awakening” for those “who thought NATO’s time had passed.” Commenting on the NATO summit and Biden’s remark, Peskov stressed that the Kremlin sees the US president’s behavior as “absolutely unacceptable, impermissible for a head of state.” The spokesman added that such statements “do not paint the American leader in a good light,” and noted that Moscow continues to “pay direct attention” to such outbursts. Peskov was also asked to comment on the numerous gaffes that plagued Biden’s speech during the summit, including mixing up Russia and Ukraine, announcing Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky as “President Putin” and referring to former President Donald Trump as the US vice president instead of Kamala Harris. The spokesman stated that “we have paid attention to the fact that the whole world has paid attention to this,” but stated that Moscow can offer no other comments on this matter, other than stating that “it is clear that these are slips of the tongue.” Biden confuses Zelensky with Putin (VIDEO) READ MORE: Biden confuses Zelensky with Putin (VIDEO) He noted that the resonance caused by Biden’s continued gaffes are all in the context of US domestic political discussions, and that “this is none of our business, this is an internal matter for the United States.” Biden’s repeated gaffes have recently led to a number of high-ranking Democrats and major donors to call for the aging president to withdraw from the race and give way to another candidate. Concerns over the 81-year-old’s mental and physical prowess deepened following his debate with Republican frontrunner Donald Trump last month. During the debate, Biden appeared to struggle finishing his sentences, repeatedly mixed up words, and lost his train of thought on several occasions. Nevertheless, Biden has dismissed concerns over his age and mental decline and has vowed to stay in the race and serve out a full second term if reelected, arguing that he is the best person to defeat Trump in November.

Ikbail Mohammed, pro Palestinian, wins Dewsbury and Batley. Newly elected MP speaks at pro-Palestine protest following UK election. Middle East Eye. Newly elected independent MP Iqbal Mohamed, who secured a seat in Yorkshire in the UK general election for the first time since 1907, delivered a speech at a pro-Palestine demonstration in London on Saturday, urging the new Labour government to take action on Palestine. Muslim voters credited for election of five independent pro-Palestinian MPs. Candidates running on a ceasefire ticket won more than 300,000 votes, forcing Keir Starmer’s party into second place in seats across the UK  Four pro-Palestine independent candidates beat Labour in General Election FOUR pro-Palestine independent candidates have won seats at Westminster in the General Election. Although the news has mostly been about Labour winning a landslide majority and the SNP performing poorly, four independent candidates who openly support Palestine have won in their constituency. Jeremy Corbyn, Adnan Hussain, Iqbal Mohamed, and Shockat Adam have all won seats at Westminster with a few of them causing a shock upset. Adam might be the biggest surprise as he beat Labour’s Jonathan Ashworth in Leicester South by just shy of 1000 votes as he said “this is for Gaza” in his winning speech.

Part One – Local and National News Review

Donald Mack, freelance journalist and former stand-up comic, joins Tony and Martin. Labour wins general election with a landslide. Turnout down. How all the Parties faired. Workers Party gets 200,000 votes but no MPs. Pro-Palestine candidates defeat Labour in several seats in General Election FOUR pro-Palestine independent candidates have won seats at Westminster in the General Election. The 51-year-old had previously canvassed for Labour but turned his back on the party as he felt they no longer listened to the local community. The war in Gaza was a big political point in Adam’s campaign as he told the Middle East Eye: “The Palestinian cause is very close to the community’s heart yet when they needed a loud and clear and distinct voice it was lacking. “How can we stand by when we are seeing massacre upon massacre?” Former Labour leader Corbyn managed to retain his seat as an independent in Islington, where he has been an MP for more than 40 years. Corbyn won 24,120 votes with Labour’s candidate Praful Nargund securing a total of 16,873. The now-independent MP had called for an end to the occupation of Palestine by Israel last year as he said it was “the only means of achieving a just and lasting peace”. Elsewhere, Mohammed gained Dewsbury and Batley from the Labour candidate Heather Iqbal after winning an impressive 15,641 votes, in comparison to Labour’s 8707. He previously said: “My initial focus will include fighting for a ceasefire and two-state peace agreement in Gaza, tackling the cost-of-living crisis, fighting to save the NHS and Dewsbury Hospital, funding for all essential services, town regeneration, safer streets, and environmental and consumer safety and protection.” Hussain beat Labour’s Kate Hollern in Blackburn by the slimmest of margins as just 132 votes separated the pair. The new MP had run his campaign with Gaza as the main focal point.

Although we were promised a room nobody to open it was to be found any time or anywhere so this week’s show came from a hastily assembled trestle table in a corridor in St. Pauls’ Kuumba Centre. LABOUR’S shadow paymaster general Jonathan Ashworth, who played a prominent role in the party’s media campaign, lost his seat to a pro-Palestine independent candidate. The senior shadow cabinet member was beaten by Shockat Adam in Leicester South, with 14,739 votes to 13,760. Adam’s policy pledges included protecting the NHS, standing up for global peace and justice and championing affordable housing. Adam said he would support a ceasefire in Gaza, something which Ashworth had failed to vote for at Westminster. In Islington North. ex-Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn dedicated his victory as an independent to the people of his constituency, as he enjoyed sweet success over his former party. He successfully retained his long-held seat of Islington North in London, beating his Labour rival by more than 7000 votes. In his victory speech, he claimed his campaign had shown “what kinder, gentler and more sensible, more inclusive politics, can bring about”….

Starmer’s Labour: The “party of NATO” prepares a UK government of genocide and war The Labour Party’s key pledge to Britain’s ruling elite is that it can be trusted in government as “the party of NATO” and national security. Sir Keir Starmer’s keynote June 3 speech pledged to make the military “fit to fight”, as he boasted that Labour had ditched the pacifist baggage of his predecessor Jeremy Corbyn. Starmer did so alongside 10 of the party’s 14 general election candidates with a military background. This was a record number for the party said Starmer repeatedly. On June 11, with Starmer about to launch a militarist manifesto, Labour boasted that the number of armed forces and veteran candidates had risen to 19. Labour’s manifesto states that every policy the party will pursue in government is subordinate to the primary mission of national security. “No policy commitment in pursuit of Labour’s missions matters unless we uphold the first duty of any government: to keep the country safe. Peace and security are hard earned. They require constant vigilance.” The manifesto complains that “over the last 14 years geopolitical tensions have risen, while the Conservatives have hollowed out our armed forces.” This is followed by a commitment to NATO’s de facto war with Russia, declaring that “Now Putin is attempting to break European security with his full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Labour will meet this challenge by strengthening our armed forces and protecting our national security.” All defence policies are listed in this context. “Our commitment to the UK’s nuclear deterrent is absolute. It is a vital safeguard for the UK and our NATO allies. As the party that founded NATO, we maintain our unshakeable commitment to the alliance, and we will apply a NATO test to major defence programmes to ensure we meet our obligations in full.” Without naming Russia and China, the document then states, “in recent years, threats to our safety and security have multiplied and diversified. Alongside greater conventional threats, we are faced with the growing emergence of hybrid warfare, including cyber-attacks and misinformation campaigns which seek to subvert our democracy. To ensure the UK is fully prepared to deal with these interconnected threats, Labour will conduct a Strategic Defence Review within our first year in government, and we will set out the path to spending 2.5 percent of GDP on defence.”

Starmer gets cool £500k from Israelis: Pro-Israel tycoon gives Labour half a million pounds Stuart Roden started a company with an Israeli special forces veteran and a senior Conservative. He’s now among Labour’s top election donors. Stuart Roden, the chairman of Israeli venture capital firm Hetz Ventures, has given the Labour party over half a million pounds ahead of the UK’s general election, Declassified has found. His donations worth £570,000 were registered with the Electoral Commission after Rishi Sunak called the snap poll. He is among a number of pro-Israel businessmen in Britain to have contributed to Labour’s election warchest, with figures such as Gary Lubner also donating £900,000 to the party in recent weeks. Roden is joined at Hetz Ventures by an array of former Israeli soldiers, many of whom have served in elite intelligence units. He is also the prime funder of a Zionist educational programme in Britain which teaches children that the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) are acting proportionately in Gaza. Roden was filmed shouting at peaceful pro-Palestine protesters outside the Labour party conference in October. “You murdered children” he screamed at the crowd, which included elderly women, telling journalists the demonstration should be banned. Roden began working in the City of London in the 1980s and launched Hetz Ventures in 2018. His net worth was estimated in the following year’s Sunday Times Rich List at around £280m, putting him among Britain’s 500 wealthiest people. Roden owns a thoroughbred racehorse with Andrew Lloyd Webber that Frankie Dettori rode to victory at Ascot. His company, Hetz, describes itself as “the first choice investor for ambitious early-stage Israeli startups”. Based in Tel Aviv, the firm’s three founding partners are Roden, ex-Conservative party chairman Lord Feldman, and London-born former Israeli special forces soldier Judah Taub. Feldman was described by the Financial Times as “David Cameron’s oldest political friend”. Taub “served as an officer in a classified intelligence unit” and passed through Sayeret Matkal, Israel’s version of the SAS. He served 111 days for the Israeli reserves since 7 October, apparently in Gaza, which he describes as a “privilege rather than a burden”. Other members of the Hetz leadership team include Pavel Livshiz and Yael Barsheshet, both of whom have served in elite Israeli military intelligence units. The company has volunteered for the Israeli “war effort” in Gaza “with food packing, donations, and farming”. Roden defended the Israeli military during a recent interview with the British press.

Keir Starmer got 500,000 fewer votes than Jeremy Corbyn

Voters are disillusioned and ignorant. How is Labour going to rejuvenate Country. Better pay, better housing, better NHS. How will wars/ financial collapse effect economy and spending? Workers Party statement.  General Election candidates – result After four and a half years the Workers Party of Britain are now the 6th largest Britain-wide party by votes cast: Labour 9,712,011 Cons 6,814,469 Reform 4,091,549 Lib Dems 3,499,933 Green 1,939,502 Workers Party 210,194 We can hold our heads high that we gained over 200,000 votes. Many however will be understandably disappointed we will not have an MP in the next Parliament. In Rochdale, Yardley and Hodge Hill we were only hundreds of votes away… Then again, with our fierce anti-imperialist and socialist politics the establishment put every obstacle in our way. From little Rishi’s address condemning our victory in Rochdale earlier this year, an almost total mainstream media blackout to the violence against our activists on the streets, the ruling class have used every dirty trick to undermine our party, our politics and the British working class. Our party will not disappear quietly into the night. Workers continue to die from austerity, Palestinians are still undergoing genocide and so all that has changed is the ruling class have brought in new management to do their dirty work. For the struggles ahead workers now need more than ever their own political party, it is the only way we can organise ourselves, educate ourselves and be united in action. For workers, our unity is our strength!

Are Ofcom, the UK broadcasting regulator election cheats? – how it works. Reform C4 undercover report – actor? Update on complaints about Channel 4 News’ ‘Undercover inside Reform’s campaign’ Published: 3 July 2024 – We received over 270 complaints about Channel 4 News’ ‘Undercover inside Reform’s campaign’. Given the election period, we have urgently assessed them against the due accuracy, due impartiality and offence rules under the Broadcasting Code. For all of these complaints, we have concluded that they do not raise substantive issues warranting further investigation. Any person or organisation directly affected by a programme has 20 working days from broadcast to make a fairness and privacy complaint to Ofcom. We would not comment further on fairness and privacy cases, in line with our published procedures. Ofcom will not investigate Channel 4 News after Nigel Farage’s Reform UK claimed the broadcaster used an actor as a “plant” in its undercover investigation into his campaign. The UK watchdog said it had received more than 270 complaints about Channel 4 News’s programme titled Undercover Inside Reform’s campaign, which saw a canvasser named Andrew Parker filmed using a racial slur to describe Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. After the expose aired, Reform’s party secretary Adam Richardson said in a letter to the Electoral Commission that it was “entirely evident that Mr Parker was a plant within the Channel 4 news piece”, adding that the broadcast “cannot be described as anything short of election interference”. On Wednesday, Ofcom said after “urgently” assessing the complaints against the due accuracy, due impartiality and offence rules under the Broadcasting Code, “we have concluded that they do not raise substantive issues warranting further investigation”. A spokesperson for Channel 4 News said: “Since this report aired, Channel 4 News has strongly stood up for its accurate, rigorous and duly impartial reporting, which speaks for itself. “Ofcom’s decision underscores the integrity of Channel 4 News’s journalism and high editorial standards. “The programme will continue to refute any claims that we – or the production company we worked with – knew or paid the Reform UK canvasser, Mr Andrew Parker. “We met Mr Parker for the first time at Reform UK’s campaign headquarters in Clacton, and he was filmed secretly via the undercover investigation.” The row with Channel 4 stems from an undercover report on activists involved in Mr Farage’s bid to win a Westminster seat at the eighth attempt. The footage showed Mr Parker using the racist term about Mr Sunak and suggesting migrants should be used as “target practice”. Another canvasser described the Pride flag as “degenerate” and suggested members of the LGBT community are paedophiles. It comes as Mr Farage is embroiled in a dispute with the BBC, claiming the audience for Friday’s Question Time special was “rigged” and refusing to appear on the flagship Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg show unless the corporation apologises. A BBC spokesperson previously said the broadcaster refutes the claims.

If the UK had a Proportional Representation (PR) voting system this would be the outcome on Friday yougov Labour 218 (+18) Con 132 (-240) Reform UK 104 (+104) Green 78 (+77) LibDems 76 (+68) SNP 19 (-29) [no mention of Galloway’s party] If the UK had Proportional Represention this would be the outcome on Friday If every vote counted for every party and was then represented in Parliament this would be roughly what the make up would be. Compare this on Friday to the First Past The Post system in which votes only count locally. A very different representation will emerge in which we effectively live in a two party state and no other party historically gets much of a look in. Do we want a state governed forever by two parties or do want something that is more closely resembling a democracy?

PR vs FPTP. What UK Parliament would look like under PR [see graphic].  General election 2024: What was the vote share and how Parliament could look with proportional representation Parliament would look very different under a proportional representation voting system Sir Keir Starmer’s Labour party has won a landslide victory at the general election, securing well over the number of seats needed for a majority government. With just a handful of seats left to declare results, Labour has won at least 410 seats in the Commons, while the Conservatives are set to fall well below their previous low of 156 MPs set in 1906. General elections in the UK are held using the first past the post (FPTP) voting system, which involves the public voting for an MP from a list of candidates to represent their local constituency in Parliament. The government is formed by the party that wins the most seats. The system is criticised by some for favouring the larger parties and campaigners have instead called for proportional representation (PR) to be used at general elections. Proportional representation would see the number of seats each party has correspond more closely to the actual share of the vote they won nationally. The largest share of the vote has gone to Labour this year, with 33.9 per cent of the vote after results from 641 constituencies. The party has secured 410 seats, but under a PR system, that number would not be so high.

How Starmer persecuted Julian Assange while DPP: The rest of Starmer’s speech. Starmer on Russia and Ukraine. Exclusive: Ken Loach calls out Sir Keir Starmer, what were his dealings in the Julian Assange case Don’t you dare get cold feet As DPP, Sir Keir Starmer tempered his supposed love of liberty by fast-tracking the extradition of Julian Assange (a process now making its way through the courts). He flouted legal precedents by advising Swedish lawyers not to question Assange in Britain: a decision that prolonged the latter’s legal purgatory denied closure to his accusers in Sweden and sealed his fate before a US show trial. Leaked emails from August 2012 show that, when the Swedish legal team expressed hesitancy about keeping Assange’s case open, Sir Keir’s office replied: ‘Don’t you dare get cold feet’. Documents released under Freedom of Information requests to Italian magazine La Repubblica confirm the very close relationship between the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and Sweden in the Julian Assange case. The files contain hundreds of mostly redacted emails sent over a five-year period. But according to one authoritative source, the number of CPS documents relating to the case may be much greater than has so far been disclosed. In May 2017, the Swedish authorities announced they had ceased all remaining investigations into alleged sexual assault by WikiLeaks founder Assange. But the Metropolitan Police arrest warrant for skipping bail would remain in force. Subsequently, Assange’s legal team sought a ruling that the Met warrant should be rescinded, but the court ruled otherwise.

Starmer saying Israel does have right to cut of food and water to Gazans. US to criminalise pro Palestinian speech. Starmer’s speech on defense. Israel ‘has the right’ to withhold power and water from Gaza, says Sir Keir Starmer 11 October 2023Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has decried the actions of Hamas as ‘terrorism’ and said Israel has the “right to defend herself.” Speaking to Nick Ferrari from the Labour Party conference, Sir Keir told LBC: “Hamas’ actions are terrorism and Israel has the right to defend herself. “Israel has the right to do everything it can to get those hostages back safe and sound. Hamas bears responsibility,” he added. He said the world has “obviously” witnessed terrorist acts carried out by Hamas. He also said “Israel has the right” to withhold power and water from Palestinian civilians. “Obviously, everything should be done within international law,” he added. “I’d call on all responsible states to call this out for what it is in utterly condemning these actions from Hamas,” he added….

1/2 UK population smoke cannabis. Farage’s opinion on decriminalisation of drugs. Who’s going to be new leader of Conservatives? Starmer more loyal to Davos than Westminster. Nadine Dorries. Patrizia Opulenza poem. A video has emerged which places Starmer beyond anti-democratic, and towards technocratic fascism Starmer has launched a war on the limited democracy we have in the UK In January 2023, Emily Maitlis asked Labour Party leader Keir Starmer: You have to choose now between Davos or Westminster? Starmer replied: ‘Davos’ Davos refers to the World Economic Forum. Multinational corporations, usually with a turnover of at least five billion dollars, fund it as members. Starmer continued: Westminster is too constrained. It’s closed and we’re not having meaning. Once you get out of Westminster whether it’s Davos or anywhere else, you actually engage with people that you can see working with in the future. Westminster is just a tribal shouting place. So Starmer admits it, if he becomes prime minister, he’ll be working with the transnational capitalist class, over even parliamentary democracy. Starmer’s war on democracy? Of course, Starmer can’t simply dissolve the limited democracy we have. Instead, he is going to war with key parts of it, in favour of a concentration of power. For this election, Labour’s ruling National Executive Committee (NEC) didn’t just select candidates. Five of them imposed themselves as candidates. But this war goes beyond the Labour leader and the NEC blocking local members from selecting prospective MPs. At the 2021 September Labour conference, Starmer tried to overrule the one member one vote system for electing the party’s leader. The system was introduced in 2014 and led to the rise of Jeremy Corbyn. He tried to replace it with the electoral college system. This reduces the say of members to just one-third of the vote. At the time, Labour MP Zarah Sultana called it an “elitist… stitch up”. But the one member one vote system remains. While members all get one vote, a percentage of MPs must first nominate the leadership candidate. The thing is, Starmer was successful in doubling that from 10% of MPs to 20%. Fast forward to 2024 and Starmer’s team aims to give MPs and only MPs the power to select the leader, if a contest is triggered while Labour is in government. This would be even more of an increase in concentration of power away from the democratic membership and towards MPs. And from Starmer’s comments on Davos, he then wants to reduce the power of MPs further in favour of transnational elites. Instead of joining the Tory Party, Starmer is controlling the labour movement through leading it. We must oppose him.

Hidden agendas of Starmer government. Labour plans House of Lords age limit and immediate end to hereditary peers – constitutional reform proposals explained The Labour party has committed to immediately legislating to remove hereditary peers from the House of Lords if elected to government. It will also impose retirement on members of the House of Lords at the age of 80. This would immediately reduce the size of the upper house of parliament. There are 91 hereditary peers, and figures from 2020 show that, at that time, there were 154 peers aged over 80 and 297 peers aged 70 to 79. This is the first part of a two-phase reform set out in the party’s 2024 election manifesto. The second phase is less clear. The broad direction is to improve the appointments process to improve national and regional balance in the House of Lords. The manifesto reiterates Labour’s commitment to replacing the Lords with an alternative second chamber that is more representative – but this will be achieved via a consultation with the British public about how politics can best serve them. Join our readers who subscribe to free evidence-based news This is reasserting Labour’s commitment towards more significant constitutional change, in line with the recommendations made by a commission led by former prime minister Gordon Brown in 2022. But it is kicking a decision on what exactly this will look like, and when, into the long grass. Brown had wanted a fully elected house. The manifesto also hints at measures to restore the reputation of the upper chamber, with tougher requirements on attending (at the moment a peer has to be absent for months on end to be suspended). It will be easier to remove disgraced peers and the appointments process will be improved. However, crucially, there is no detail on any of these plans.

WW3. Haiti. Victor Orban wants Russia to keep Donbass region and a peace deal. Reminisces of a Future website. ‘Washington: War from Independence to Iraq’..?.. book. IDF against IDF Generals do, Netanyahu doesn’t want Gaza ceasefire – story. Newborn babies can’t survive in Gaza. Israeli Generals Want Truce in Gaza, Putting Them at Odds With Netanyahu – Israeli Generals, Low on Munitions, Want a Truce in Gaza – Israel’s military leadership wants a cease-fire with Hamas in case a bigger war breaks out in Lebanon, security officials say. It has also concluded that a truce would be the swiftest way to free hostages. Israel’s top generals want to begin a cease-fire in Gaza even if it keeps Hamas in power for the time being, widening a rift between the military and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has opposed a truce that would allow Hamas to survive the war. The generals think that a truce would be the best way of freeing the roughly 120 Israelis still held, both dead and alive, in Gaza, according to interviews with six current and former security officials. Underequipped for further fighting after Israel’s longest war in decades, the generals also think their forces need time to recuperate in case a land war breaks out against Hezbollah, the Lebanese militia that has been locked in a low-level fight with Israel since October, multiple officials said. A truce with Hamas could also make it easier to reach a deal with Hezbollah, according to the officials, most of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive security matters. Hezbollah has said it will continue to strike northern Israel until Israel stops fighting in the Gaza Strip. Known collectively as the General Staff Forum, Israel’s military leadership is formed from roughly 30 senior generals, including the military chief of staff, Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, the commanders of the army, air force and navy, and the head of military intelligence. The military’s attitude to a cease-fire reflects a major shift in its thinking over the past months as it became more clear that Mr. Netanyahu was refusing to articulate or commit to a postwar plan. That decision has essentially created a power vacuum in the enclave that has forced the military to go back and fight in parts of Gaza it had already cleared of Hamas fighters.

Hamas not defeated, now stronger. CFR’s Foreign Affairs magazine: ‘Hamas is winning’ US Foreign Affairs magazine confirmed on Friday: “Hamas is stronger today than it was on October 7. Its cause is more popular and its appeal stronger than before October 7.” The magazine wrote in a report: “After nine months of gruelling war, it is time to recognize the stark reality: there is no military-only solution to defeat Hamas,” adding that “Hamas is neither defeated nor on the verge of defeat.” It also noted: “Israel has invaded northern and southern Gaza with approximately 40,000 combat troops, forcibly displaced 80 percent of the population, killed over 37,000 people, dropped at least 70,000 tons of bombs on the territory (surpassing the combined weight of bombs dropped on London, Dresden, and Hamburg in all of World War II), destroyed or damaged over half of all buildings in Gaza, and limited the territory’s access to water, food, and electricity, leaving the entire population on the brink of famine.” According to the magazine: “Although many observers have highlighted the immorality of Israel’s conduct, Israeli leaders have consistently claimed that the goal of defeating Hamas and weakening its ability to launch new attacks against Israeli civilians must take precedence over any concerns about Palestinian lives. The punishment of the population of Gaza must be accepted as necessary to destroy the power of Hamas.” However, Foreign Affairs states: “The central flaw in Israel’s strategy is not a failure of tactics or the imposition of constraints on military force—just as the failure of the United States’ military strategy in Vietnam had little to do with the technical proficiency of its troops or political and moral limits on the uses of military power. Rather, the overarching failure has been a gross misunderstanding of the sources of Hamas’s power. To its great detriment, Israel has failed to realize that the carnage and devastation it has unleashed in Gaza has only made its enemy stronger.” “Despite its losses, Hamas remains in de facto control of large swaths of Gaza, including those areas where the territory’s civilians are now concentrated,” it added. “According to a recent Israeli assessment, Hamas now has more fighters in the northern areas of Gaza, which the IDF seized in the fall at the cost of hundreds of soldiers, than it does in Rafah in the south.” The report also pointed out that Hamas: “Could still strike in Israel;

British Government inventing Skripal’s story – lawyer Holborn never met them British Government Invents Phantom Skripals to Refuse to Testify in the Novichok Inquiry By John Helmer, A new lawyer appeared in a London court on Friday claiming to represent Sergei (lead image, left) and Yulia Skripal. Jack Holborn, a barrister specializing in what he calls human rights, told Lord Anthony Hughes, who is conducting a public inquiry into the alleged Novichok death of Dawn Sturgess in 2018, that the Skripals should not be called to give evidence or testify in the case. Holborn claimed the Skripals are fearful for their security. “No security measures are perfect”, he said. Holborn has not been in contact with the Skripals, however. He refuses to answer questions put to him on what visual contact or other communications he has had with either Sergei or Yulia Skripal. Instead, he was told what to say at the hearing by the law firm of Kingsley Napley which the British government is paying to show that the Skripals are participating in the Novichok case. The spokesman for Hughes and the inquiry was asked to explain Holborn’s presence in court for the first time on Friday. She was also asked what authority the Skripals had given Holborn to represent them. The spokesman answered: “Kingsley Napley has been designated as the recognised legal representative of the Skripals under r[ule] 6 of the Inquiry Rules 2006. By rule 8, the recognised legal representative may appoint a team to assist them and Kingsley Napley have accordingly instructed counsel to appear on their clients’ behalf.” In other words, there has been no contact between the lawyers who say they represent the Skripals, and the Skripals themselves. The judge and government are refusing to give evidence that Sergei Skripal is alive, and that Yulia Skripal is not in prison. The problem for the British Government is that if the Skripals are allowed to give live evidence at the Hughes inquiry, there is no telling what they may say to contradict or discredit the six-year official narrative of the Russian Novichok attack in England. The lawyer for the inquiry, Andrew O’Connor KC, told Hughes on Friday morning this was a “difficult question as to whether either or both of Sergei and Julia Skripal should give oral evidence.” He also acknowledged there was the same problem in revealing what the Skripals have already said. “In the case of the Skripals, the transcripts of their police interviews have not yet been provided to CPs [Core Participants] but will be very shortly.” In fact, the Skripal transcripts will be so redacted, the officials and lawyers admitted in court, it is uncertain what the Skripals believe had happened to them, and why. Release of the redacted Skripal transcripts from March of 2018 risks being contradicted by fresh written statements to the Hughes inquiry from the Skripals, so that form of testimony is also being barred. Since March 4, 2018, when the Skripals slumped unconscious on a Salisbury town bench and were kept in hospital under police guard, three British prime ministers — Theresa May, Boris Johnson, and Rishi Sunak — have continued the story that three Russian military officers attacked the Skripals with a Novichok nerve agent they had brought by plane into England, and sprayed on to the door handle of Sergei Skripal’s home; that was several hours before he and his daughter showed symptoms and collapsed….

Attacks on Mosques and Churches in Dagestan, Russia. Rockets fired at beach in Sevastopol, Russia. Ukraine turning to terrorism to win war. ‘Terror attack’ on synagogue, churches in Russia’s Dagestan: What we know What do we know about the victims of the synagogue attack? Russian authorities said on Monday that 20 people, including 15 police officers and five civilians, were killed. Sergei Melikov, the head of the Dagestan region, said the civilians killed included an Orthodox priest, Nikolai Kotelnikov, who had worked for more than 40 years at the church in Derbent. More than a dozen people are in the hospital after sustaining injuries in the attack, Al Jazeera’s Daniel Hawkins reported from Moscow. What’s the significance of Dagestan? Dagestan, with a majority Muslim population, is home to more than 50 different ethnicities. It is also known as “the Mountain of Languages” or “Mountain of Nationalities”. Russian President Vladimir Putin has long held the North Caucasus region up as a poster child of integration and loyalty to the Russian state. This was evident when the Kremlin chose Dagestan for its first Putin photo op following former Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin’s failed coup attempt last year. In Dagestan, Putin was seen mingling with locals, taking photos, in an apparent show of confidence. Dagestan also borders Chechnya, which has long been home to a simmering secessionist movement that Russia attempted to crush through two wars — between 1994 and 1996, and then between 1999 and 2009. Those tensions in Chechnya have at times spilled over into Dagestan. In 1999, a Chechnya-based armed group entered Dagestan with more than 1,000 fighters, evoking a Russian military response. After more than a month of fighting, Russia recaptured all parts of the region. More recently, Russia’s Federal Security Service arrested four people in Dagestan over Moscow’s Crocus City Hall attacks, pointing to Russian concerns over separatism in the region. Amid Israel’s war on Gaza, Dagestan also made global headlines when on October 29, 2023, a crowd stormed Makhachkala airport to protest against the landing of a flight from Israel’s Tel Aviv. The crowd chanted anti-Israel slogans. This prompted the temporary closure of the airport. At least 60 people were arrested. Russia blamed Ukraine and the West for the airport unrest. Who carried out the Dagestan attack? Some experts believe that a link between the attackers and the ISIL/ISIS armed group cannot be ruled out. “It is possible and probably highly likely that there is a connection with ISIS groups because as we know ISIS has a kind of a network. It isn’t a hierarchical structure. People who affiliate themselves with ISIS can carry out these kinds of attacks,” Domitilla Sagramoso, lecturer in Security and Development at the Department of War Studies, King’s College London, told Al Jazeera. “I think what makes it likely that there is an ISIS connection is the kinds of targets: Orthodox churches, synagogues,” Sagramoso added. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Putin had received reports on Sunday’s attacks. Russia’s Investigative Committee, the country’s top state criminal investigation agency, said all five attackers had been killed. “We understand who is behind the organisation of the terrorist attacks and what goal they pursued,” Melikov, the Dagestan leader, said, adding that foreign forces had been involved in preparing the attack, without sharing any details. “This is an attempt to cleave apart our unity.”…

Covert Action magazine – Alfred de Zayas ‘ The Human Rights Industry’ – Russia excluded from UN. UN report – anyone supporting Israel could also be guilty of war crimes – Black Rock and banks profiting from Gaza attack. Intelligence Services Have Penetrated and Corrupted Human Rights NGOs, Says Former Senior Lawyer with the Office of the UN High Commissioner Jeremy Kuzmarov – June 7, 2024 On April 7, 2022, the UN General Assembly voted to exclude Russia from the UN Human Rights Council. The resolution received the required two-thirds majority of those voting, minus abstentions, in the 193-member Assembly, with 93 nations voting in favour and 24 against.[1] The vote was highly politicized and reflected the success of the Western information war against Russia, which was falsely blamed for launching an unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, and for committing the overwhelming majority of atrocities in the war, including a massacre at Bucha, a suburb of Kyiv, which independent investigators concluded was actually carried out by Ukraine.  Alfred de Zayas, a former senior lawyer with the Office of the UN High Commissioner and Secretary of the UN’s Human Rights Committee, wrote in his book The Human Rights Industry (Atlanta: Clarity Press, 2023) that the UN General Assembly’s decision to exclude Russia “added to the general atmosphere of Russophobia that we have seen over the last three decades,” and “to the world’s perception of engineered bias in the UN itself, where the manipulation of States’ votes was enabled by a failure to call for a secret ballot, as requested by Russia.”[2] Alfred de Zayas. Born in Cuba, de Zayas grew up in Chicago and obtained a law degree from Harvard and Ph.D. in modern history from the University of Göttingen. He worked with the United Nations from 1981 to 2003 as a senior lawyer with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Chief of Petitions. [Source: wikipedia.org] De Zayas noted further that, if exclusion were undertaken objectively by the General Assembly, one would expect the exclusion of other offenders, including but not limited to the following: Several NATO countries, for the war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by their force during the wars of aggression against Yugoslavia, Iraq, Libya, Syria, etc. Saudi Arabia, among others, because of its genocidal war against the people of Yemen and because of the gruesome assassination of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul in 2018. India for its systematic war crimes and gross violations of human rights against the people of Khashmir, including widespread extra-judicial executions. Azerbaijan because of its aggression against the hapless Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) during the blitzkrieg of September-November 2020, where the crime of aggression, war crimes and crimes against humanity were committed, including torture and execution of Armenian prisoners of war. Decades of systematic killing of human rights defenders, social leaders, syndicalists and Indigenous peoples by successive Colombian governments and lethal paramilitary forces. According to de Zayas, the UN’s Human Rights Council, since its creation in 2006, has not served human rights well; rather it has manifestly served the geopolitical and informational interests of the United States and the European Union. These interests center on the demonization of Russia, which guarantees “that the maw of the U.S. military-industrial-digital-financial complex can continue to be fed, and its war on the world, contrary to the purposes and principles of the United Nations, can be pursued, even when it pushes the purported ‘rules-based’ international order.”[3]

The Human Rights Industry De Zayas’s book, The Human Rights Industry, focuses on the politicization and weaponization of human rights discourse at the UN and double standards of the International Criminal Court (ICC) which has evolved into a neo-colonial instrument that prosecutes primarily African leaders and enemies of the U.S. and West. (the recent arrest warrant for Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu may be a step in the right direction, but where are the warrants for U.S. leaders for their many crimes?) [Source: thegrayzone.com] The Human Rights Industry further spotlights the fact that human rights NGOs have been compromised by corporate foundations and Western intelligence agencies. De Zayas writes that he supports the work of many NGOs and idea of people’s power but finds that too many NGOs “go to foreign countries primarily to create confusion, interfere in the internal affairs of those states, and pave the way for ‘color revolutions’ and undemocratic regime change.”[4] The human rights industry’s deceptions are especially insidious in that they manipulate people’s genuine concern for human welfare in a way that compels them to support U.S. military intervention or regime-change operations that are detrimental to human rights. The Chinese Human Rights Defenders (CHRD), a major source of Xinjiang genocide allegations, was among the human rights NGOs that received funding from the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), a CIA cutout founded in the 1980s that advances disinformation in the service of U.S. corporate-military power. he CHRD lists its address to the office of Human Rights Watch (HRW), which has long-standing ties to Western intelligence and a history of promoting fabricated atrocity stories against targets of U.S. regime change like North Korea and Iraq, while ignoring the plight of victims of U.S.-backed violence, such as the people of eastern Ukraine. Financed heavily by George Soros, HRW and contemporaries like Amnesty International spend a disproportionate amount of time discussing issues related to LGBTQ rights while failing to condemn neo-liberal economic policies that leave people without access to clean water or adequate health care and education, and support coercive economic measures (i.e., sanctions) that are in violation of the UN charter. A person in a suit Description automatically generatedGeorge Soros [Source: medias-presse.info] Amnesty International was founded by Peter Benenson (1921-2005) who worked in British military intelligence during World War II and, in 1966, admitted that Amnesty had been infiltrated by British intelligence agents. The CIA and Israeli Mossad were also said to have been involved in Amnesty, whose chairman at one time received instructions from the Israeli Foreign Ministry, according to de Zayas.[5] The long-standing intelligence and Western government connections may help explain Amnesty’s failure to address the plight of exploited indigenous people of North and South America, or the plight of exploited migrant workers, and Kafaa workers who live in conditions of modern-day slavery, along with that of people struggling for self-determination like the Bubi people of the Island of Bioko, the South Cameroonians, the Kashmiris, the Sahrawis, the Kurds, the Yemenis, the Ngonis of Nigeria, the Tamils of Sri Lanka, the Ryukyuans of Okinawa, the West Papuans, and the Catalans of Spain, among others. A group of women wearing headscarves Description automatically generatedKashmiris have suffered terribly under Indian occupation but their plight has not been spotlighted by Amnesty, HRW or other Western human rights NGOs because there is no benefit to Western countries in trying to save them and India is now viewed as a strategic bulwark against a rising China. [Source: blogs.dunyanews.tv] De Zayas makes clear that HRW has a particularly odious record in supporting illegal U.S. military interventions under the Responsibility to Protect Doctrine (R2P), which uses invented human rights crimes as a pretext for wars that have devastated whole societies—like Libya in 2011. HRW further helped justify Donald Trump’s extrajudicial execution of a top Iranian General (Qassem Soleimani), and has taken its resentment of China to unhinged levels, likening Beijing to Nazi Germany.

Chris Hedges on genocide in Gaza and end of Israeli credibility. Nero’s Guests talk… Hezbollah bombing northern Israel. Hedges was hired by The New York Times in 1990. He covered the first Gulf War for the paper, where he refused to participate in the military pool system that restricted the movement and reporting of journalists. He was arrested by the U.S. military and had his press credentials revoked, but continued to defy the military restrictions to report outside the pool system. He entered Kuwait with the U.S. Marine Corps. He was taken prisoner in Basra after the war by the Iraqi Republican Guard during the Shiite uprising. He was freed after a week. Hedges was appointed the paper’s Middle East Bureau Chief in 1991. His reporting on the atrocities committed by Saddam Hussein in the Kurdish-held parts of northern Iraq saw the Iraqi leader offer a bounty for anyone who killed him, along with other western journalists and aid workers in the region. Several aid workers and journalists, including the German reporter Lissy Schmidt, were assassinated and others were severely wounded. Hedges became the Balkan Bureau Chief for The New York Times in 1995 reporting from the besieged city of Sarajevo. He later covered the war in Kosovo. He and his photographer, Wade Goddard, were the first journalists to travel with armed units of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) at the inception of the insurgency mounted against the occupying Serbs.

UK being subservient to US. Psychological warfare. Michael Hudson on internationalism run by nationalist US leading to creation of BRICS. Russia and China CRUSH NATO’s Plan as Ukraine FALLS Apart | Michael Hudson  The July 4 landslide defeat of the neoliberal pro-war British Conservatives by the neoliberal pro-war Labour Party poses the question of just what the media mean when they describe the elections and political alignments throughout Europe in terms of center-right and center-left traditional parties challenged by nationalist neo-fascists…. What are called extremist right-wing parties are now the populist anti-war parties What is called the “far right” is supporting (at least in campaign rhetoric) policies that used to be called “left,” opposing war and improving the economic conditions of domestic labor and farmers – but not those of immigrants. And as was the case with the old left, the right’s main supporters are the younger voters. After all, they are bearing the brunt of falling real wages throughout Europe. They see that their path to upward mobility is no longer what it was for their parents (or grandparents) in the 1950s after World War II ended, when there was much less private-sector housing debt, credit-card debt or other debt – especially student debt. Back then, everyone could afford to buy a house by taking out a mortgage that only absorbed 25% of their wage income, and was self-amortizing in 30 years. But today’s families, businesses and governments are obliged to borrow rising sums just to maintain their status quo. The old division between right and left parties has become meaningless. The recent rise in parties described as “far right” reflects the widespread popular opposition to the US/NATO support of Ukraine against Russia, and especially to the consequences for European economies of that support. Traditionally, anti-war policies have been left-wing, but Europe’s “center-left” parties are following America’s pro-war “leadership from behind” (and often under the table). This is presented as an internationalist stance, but it has become unipolar and U.S.-centered. European countries have no independent voice. What turns out to be a radical break from past norms is Europe following NATO’s transformation from a defensive alliance to an offensive alliance in keeping with U.S. attempts to maintain its unipolar dominance of world affairs. Joining America’s sanctions on Russia and China, and emptying out their own arsenals to send weapons to Ukraine to try and bleed the Russian economy has not hurt Russia, but strengthened it. The sanctions have acted as a protective wall for its own agriculture and industry, leading to import-displacing investment. But the sanctions have hurt Europe, especially Germany. The global failure of today’s Western version of internationalism The BRICS+ countries are expressing the same political demands for a break from the status quo that national populations in the West are seeking. Russia, China and other leading BRICS countries are working to undo the legacy of debt-ridden economic polarization that has spread through both the West, the Global South and Eurasia as a result of the US/NATO and IMF diplomacy. After World War II, internationalism promised a peaceful world. The two World Wars were blamed on nationalist rivalries. These were supposed to end, but instead of internationalism ending national rivalries, the Western version that prevailed with the end of the Cold War has seen an increasingly nationalist United States lock in Europe and other satellite countries against Russia and the rest of Asia. What poses as an international “rules-based order” is one in which U.S. diplomats set and change the rules to reflect U.S. interests, while ignoring international law and demanding that American allies follow U.S. Cold War leadership. This is not peaceful internationalism. It sees a unipolar U.S. military alliance leading toward military aggression and economic sanctions to isolate Russia and China. Or more to the point, to isolate European and other allies from its former trade and investment with Russia and China, making those allies more dependent on the United States.

Christian faith of UK PMs, SinceQueen Elizabeth II died we had the first nn-CHristian, Rishi Sunak a Hindu’used car salesman’. Does Keir Starmer’s atheism matter? … Starmer has made sincere efforts to reach out to believers. In 2022 he launched a network of ‘Faith Champions’, 16 parliamentarians with a brief to build links between religious groups and Labour – or as he Starmerishly put it: ‘MPs and peers will be message carriers and engage with specific communities.’ Last month he interviewed Sadiq Khan to mark Eid, and told a newspaper that, to keep up the Jewish traditions on his wife’s side of the family, the Starmers occasionally attend synagogue and say some Jewish prayers once a week. (Part of the Friday evening home time which he hopes to set aside when in office.) So Starmer does ‘do God’, in a way; just not very convincingly. He got 40 seconds into the conversation with Khan before shifting the subject away from Muslim belief on to the logistics of visiting Mecca (‘There is this theme coming up about visas…’). After mentioning his family’s Jewish roots last month, he mysteriously remarked, ‘They’re not Jewish for reasons I won’t bore you with’, and wouldn’t elaborate. Does Starmer’s insensitivity to religion matter? It just might. Take his policy of introducing VAT on school fees. Eton and Harrow can take it. But what about the Christian, Muslim and Jewish institutions with attendances below 300 and fees of, say, £6,000 a year, which run on goodwill and prayer? Again, the proposed ban on ‘conversion therapy’ was abandoned by the Tories partly because every way of framing it was an obvious threat to religious freedom: as the Evangelical Alliance observed, an expansive ban ‘would place church leaders at risk of prosecution when they preach on biblical texts relating to marriage and sexuality’ and could ‘criminalise a member of a church who prays with another member when they ask for prayer to resist temptation’. Labour’s manifesto promises to institute a ban, without explaining how they would avoid putting traditional religious believers on the wrong side of the law. ‘We met in a gender-neutral facility.’ Progressive politicians long to harness the public spirit and ethical seriousness of religious communities. As Starmer told religious charities earlier this year: ‘We will welcome anyone who wants to make our national life better to take their place at the table, to shape the future.’ But those communities’ deepest commitments often make them difficult to co-opt. Ask Pastor Irukwu. Ask Janet Daby, briefly Starmer’s shadow minister for faith, women and equalities, who had to resign after she publicly mused about protecting the conscience rights of Christian marriage registrars. Winston Churchill joked that, although he was not a pillar of the church, he liked to think of himself as a ‘flying buttress’ – i.e., supporting the church from outside. Starmer could never deliver that line: not just because it is too witty and knowledgeable, but because it implies a certain respectful distance from the church, a willingness to let religious communities get on with it. Starmer, on the other hand, gives the impression that he views faith as a resource to be exploited. But when he comes to religious groups with flattering words and promises of a ‘partnership’, the wisest answer may be: please, just leave us alone.
