A report has warned that chronic poverty could result in the UK seeing the kind social divide not seen since the Victorian era. A study by the Centre for Social Justice has found the most disadvantaged in Britain are no better off than 15 years ago and that lockdowns had a ‘catastrophic effect’ on the nations social fabric. The UK is in danger of slipping back into a Victorian-age gap between mainstream society and an impoverished underclass, a report has warned. Some 13.4 million people lead lives marred by family fragility, stagnant wages, poor housing, chronic ill health and crime, according to the Centre for Social Justice. The CSJ’s report – Two Nations: The State Of Poverty In The UK – argues that the most disadvantaged in Britain are no better off than 15 years ago, at the time of the financial crash, and cites evidence that switching from welfare to work isn’t worth it for them.

The most recent five year average to 2017/18 was about three times more than that at £5.3 billion, which is equivalent to a 212% increase (or tripling). These are both in 2017/18 prices. A Labour councillor dramatically resigned from her party during a speech at a full council meeting. Zoe Goodman is a councillor for Filwood ward who is not standing in the May 2024 local elections. Prior to the full council meeting, Goodman had spoken at a pro-Palestine protest on College Green. In City Hall, Goodman resigned from the Labour Party after presenting a petition calling for a ceasefire in the Israel-Palestine conflict. “Unfortunately, as a result of how the genocide in Gaza and our response to it has been treated by the national Labour Party and some of those in the local Labour group, I am resigning from the Labour Party today,” Goodman said. She added: “Free Palestine, free Gaza, ceasefire now.” After the end of the council meeting, in which there were angry scenes when Acorn members confronted mayor Marvin Rees, a Palestinian flag was projected onto the side of City Hall.
Residents of Barton House in Bristol confronted Mayor Marvin Rees one month after being evacuated from their homes due to safety concerns. The clash, which happened during a full council meeting, started after members of the community union Acorn asked whether they would be able to return to their homes in time for Christmas. But the group of around a dozen residents were told they could not ask any further questions, which lead to chanting and shouting. One councillor described the scene as “intimidating”, but Acorn denied this, instead saying residents were “understandably upset”. Hundreds of people were evacuated from the tower block after it was found to be structurally unsafe. The meeting was adjourned but videos show security stepping in, with a further confrontation in the foyer. More than 400 people were evacuated from the tower block in November after surveys found the building could collapse if there was a single fire in a flat. Most residents are being housed in a nearby Holiday Inn while a further survey is completed. The results are expected later this week and will determine whether residents are able to return.

World leaders, international rights groups and United Nations officials have criticised the United States for vetoing a UN resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza and failing to halt the war that has killed more than 17,400 Palestinians and about 1,100 people in Israel since October 7. A UN resolution on the pause in hostilities failed to pass on Friday at the UN Security Council after the United States vetoed the proposal and Britain abstained. The remaining 13 of the 15 current members of the UNSC voted in favour of the resolution put forward by the United Arab Emirates and co-sponsored by 100 other countries. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said the US’s veto made it “complicit” in war crimes in Gaza. “The president has described the American position as aggressive and immoral, a flagrant violation of all humanitarian principles and values, and holds the United States responsible for the bloodshed of Palestinian children, women and elderly people in the Gaza Strip,” a statement from his office said. Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh said the veto was “a disgrace and another blank cheque given to the occupying state to massacre, destroy and displace”. Palestine’s UN envoy Riyad Mansour told the UNSC that the result of the vote was “disastrous”. “If you are against the destruction and displacement of the Palestinian people you must stand against this war. And if you support it then you are enabling this destruction and displacement regardless of your intentions … Millions of Palestinian lives hang in the balance. Every single one of them is sacred, worth saving.”
The Israel-Gaza war has taken a severe toll on journalists since Hamas launched its unprecedented attack against Israel on October 7 and Israel declared war on the militant Palestinian group, launching strikes on the blockaded Gaza Strip. CPJ is investigating all reports of journalists and media workers killed, injured, or missing in the war, which has led to the deadliest month for journalists since CPJ began gathering data in 1992. As of December 16, CPJ’s preliminary investigations showed at least 64 journalists and media workers were among the more than 19,000 killed since the war began on October 7—with some 18,000 Palestinian deaths in Gaza and the West Bank and 1,200 deaths in Israel. The deadliest day of the war for journalist deaths was its first day, October 7, with six journalists killed; the second-deadliest day occurred on November 18, with five killed. How Israel Uses an AI Genocide Program to Obliterate Gaza Jonathan Cook Washington Report on Middle East Affairs, January/February 2024, pp. 24-26 IT SHOULD ALREADY have been evident from the scale of death and destruction inflicted on Gaza over the past weeks that Israel was implementing a policy of ethnic cleansing and genocide against Palestinians in the besieged enclave. Now Israeli whistleblowers have provided details of how these crimes against humanity are being carried out—and how they are being rationalized internally within Israel’s military and political echelons. An extraordinary series of testimonies jointly published by the Israel-based publications 972 and Local Call last week established that the huge death toll of Palestinian civilians is, in fact, integral to Israel’s war aims, not an unfortunate side effect. The known dead so far are estimated at almost 16,000, with a further 6,000 missing, presumably crushed under rubble. Two-thirds of those killed by Israel are women and children. Two years ago, during an earlier attack on Gaza, Israeli military officials admitted for the first time that a computer was supplying them with potential targets. The intention appears to have been to bypass the restraints imposed by human assessments of likely casualties by outsourcing the killings to a machine. The whistleblowers confirm that, given new, generous parameters of who and what can be attacked, the artificial intelligence system, called “Gospel,” is generating lists of targets so rapidly the military cannot keep up. Israel’s inputs are now so broad that they allow the bombing without warning of high-rise apartment blocks, so long as it can be claimed that one person residing there is believed to have a connection to Hamas. As Hamas not only has a military wing but runs the enclave’s government, the new policy potentially widens the circle of targets to include civil servants, police, health workers, educators, journalists and aid workers. That helps explain how, according to United Nations figures, some 100,000 homes in Gaza have been levelled or made uninhabitable and at least 1.7 million Palestinians displaced, some three-quarters of the enclave’s population.

For the first time in its bloody 75 year history, Israel could be facing its most serious legal troubles next year. The Jewish State finds itself facing two of the world’s top legal courts: first, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) is due to give its legal opinion on the nature of the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, in February 2024. Then, at some point next year, the Occupation State is to face the International Criminal Court (ICC), which has already initiated a criminal investigation into Israeli actions in both the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip. The request came after the UNGA voted 90 in favour and 8 against, last December, to refer Israel to the Court as the highest UN legal body. The Court is precisely asked to give its legal opinion on several issues including: Israel’s prolonged occupation, annexation of Palestinian Territories, settlement expansion and denial of Palestinians’ right to self-determination, among others. The ICJ sums up the referral as the “Legal Consequences” arising from the Policies and Practices of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem.” In a practical sense, this means the entire issue of Israeli occupation is, for the first time ever, being scrutinised by the World Court in which all UN members are members by default. The very Israeli occupation is already judged as illegal, a fact accepted by all countries, including the US. On top of that, Israel has never really complied with any UN resolution related to its occupation of Arab and Palestinian land. Even its protector, the US, recognises the fact that occupation is illegal. Yet, occupation “policies and practices” have never before been legally questioned by the ICJ, given its worldwide jurisdiction—the UN’s Court is accepted by all UN member states, including the State of Palestine and Israel—Palestine was admitted to the UN in 2012. Whatever the opinion of ICJ will be, it is a landmark victory and a turning point for the Palestinian struggle for independence. While the ICJ does not have any power to reinforce its ruling, let alone its opinion, the fact that Israel stands accused before that Court is more than simple legal victory for the Palestinians—it is a case of anti-colonialism in the 21 Century. The ICJ is expected to face pressure from the US, Israel itself and others who support it, like the United Kingdom. However, its deliberations appear to be straightforward, since the UN has many times described the Israeli occupation as illegal.

The prime minister also said that, “whoever is against a Palestinian state should be for” transferring the funds to Gaza, because maintaining a separation between the PA in the West Bank and Hamas in Gaza helps prevent the establishment of a Palestinian state. Netanyahu also spoke about his Bar-Ilan speech, in which he expressed support for a demilitarized Palestinian state a decade ago. At the time, Netanyahu said, he told then-US vice president Joe Biden his conditions for a Palestinian state: that it be demilitarized, that Jerusalem remain unified and that Israel have full security control, including freedom of action for the IDF and the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) to prevent terrorism against Israel. Netanyahu recounted that Biden responded that it wouldn’t really be a Palestinian state, but that he can call it whatever he wants. Advertisement In addition, he told the Likud candidates in the faction meeting that he opposes any population transfers of Jews or Arabs, and that he’s “against uprooting even one person.” He said that he had voted for the 2005 Gaza disengagement at first because it was only about territory, but when the discussions moved to moving thousands of people, he resigned from the government. Party leaders across the political spectrum have criticized Netanyahu’s policies towards Gaza in general and the payments specifically.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been slammed as calling for ‘a holy war of annihilation’ against the Palestinian people in the besieged Gaza Strip after he invoked the ‘Amalek’, a nation in the Hebrew Bible that the Israelites were ordered to wipe out in an act of revenge. ‘You must remember what Amalek has done to you,’ he said in a speech yesterday announcing the start of a ground invasion in Gaza, adding that Israeli soldiers were part of a legacy that goes back 3,000 years.
Albert Pike, who was a captain for the US army during the American Civil War, is alleged to have penned a doctrine to an Italian politician outlining plans for three global conflicts to bring a one world government. It plots how and why the first and second world wars raged in the early 1900s – and provides a chilling prophecy over a third and final battle. The letter features heavily in the book Satan, Prince of this World, by former naval officer William Guy Carr. It was reportedly sent by Pike, a freemason, to Italian politician Giuseppe Mazzini and was dated August 15, 1871. he letter, it is claimed, suggested World War 1 was planned to overthrow the Tsars in Russia and make Russia a communist stronghold. World War 2 was sparked as a catalyst to destroy Nazism, so communism could take over wearier governments and for a sovereign state of Israel to beset up in Palestine. The third global war, according to Pike, will be fought between the west and leaders of the Islamic war . He insists on calling October 7 “Israel’s 9/11,” even comparing how the Bush administration, like Israel, was “caught by surprise” by the terrorist attacks that day (in fact, Bush had been forewarned of an impending attack). Now Netanyahu had a pretext for justifying Israel’s latest and most brutal invasion of Gaza. News has seeped out, however, that he was forewarned by Egyptian intelligence that Hamas was on the verge of orchestrating attacks in Israel. In fact, he was repeatedly warned by Israeli intelligence that the political turmoil surrounding his advocacy for changing the Israeli judiciary threatened Israeli national security. Which raises the unavoidable question: Did Netanyahu let October 7 happen to achieve his ambitions: silencing his critics, fighting corruption charges, staying out of jail, and rallying the country around a wartime president bent on destroying Hamas? Much of northern Gaza has been reduced to rubble, and it is his goal to obliterate southern Gaza as well. Perhaps he is thinking that only then, after destroying Hamas and forcing Palestinians out of Gaza, can he convince international lenders to support his long-held scheme of turning Israel into an energy corridor. Netanyahu — and possibly President Joe Biden — are likely taking the “long view,” convincing themselves that the world will forget what happened once economic development takes off in the region, powered by Israel’s abundant offshore natural gas in the Leviathan Field and Gaza Marine. Work has already begun on another infrastructure project: building the so-called Ben Gurion Canal, from the tip of northern Gaza south into the Gulf of Aqaba, connecting Israel to the Red Sea and providing a competitor to Egypt’s Suez Canal.

Sir Keir Starmer on Tuesday vowed a new approach on illegal immigration after Tory criticism that he has no plan B to the Government’s troubled Rwanda scheme. The opposition leader used a speech at Silverstone Technology Park in Buckinghamshire on the fourth anniversary of the 2019 election to position Labour as ready to lead a “decade of national renewal”, in contrast to the “psychodrama” engulfing Rishi Sunak’s Conservatives over Rwanda. “We cannot let the Tories take this country down with them, we cannot let them kick the hope out of our future,” he told an audience at the Silverstone race track, promising to rev up reform over at least two terms of Labour rule. But Conservative Party chairman Richard Holden accused Sir Keir of “planning to try and block our plans to stop the boats” and of lacking “the principles needed to lead Britain”. Ministers also say his “national renewal” plan is fatally undermined by his “flip-flop” approach to issues such as housing, after Labour voted down a Government move to relax waterway pollution restrictions on new building. The 2019 election saw Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour slump to its worst defeat since 1935, but polls now point to a stunning turnaround that leaves Sir Keir in reach of the keys to No10. “We have changed the Labour Party fundamentally. So it’s a party that is ready to serve, ready to stand for the country, has got a plan for the future,” he told BBC Breakfast. “Compare that, four years on, with a Conservative Party that is fighting amongst themselves self-indulgently, people positioning themselves for some future leadership race, instead of concentrating on the issues that the country is facing.” The Labour leader reiterated his intention to scrap the Prime Minister’s controversial Rwanda deportation scheme, calling it a “gimmick” and “political performance art”, in favour of more bilateral returns agreements.

Hundreds of Biden administration staffers held a vigil outside the White House late Wednesday calling for a lasting cease-fire in Gaza as the Palestinian territory’s healthcare system collapsed and the U.S.-armed Israeli military bombed the entirety of the besieged strip. The staffers donned masks and sunglasses to conceal their identities, likely out of fear of retaliation from an administration that has been accused of cracking down on dissent against President Joe Biden’s support for Israel’s assault on Gaza. Josh Paul, a former State Department official who resigned in October over the administration’s weapons transfers to Israel, also took part in the demonstration and delivered remarks on behalf of the staffers. “We were horrified by the brutal October 7 attacks on Israeli civilians, and have been horrified by the disproportionate response by the Israeli government, which has indiscriminately killed thousands of innocent Palestinian civilians in Gaza and displaced over a million more,” said Paul. “We have seen refugee camps, hospitals, schools, and entire neighborhoods bombed. We have seen dead men, women, and children pulled from the rubble in their pajamas. We have seen harassment, humiliation, and degradation of many kinds. Tensions rose between Venezuela and Guyana on Tuesday as Caracas proposed a bill to create a Venezuelan province in a disputed oil-rich region and ordered the state oil company to issue licenses for extracting crude there. Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro proposed at a government meeting that a bill be sent to the National Assembly for the creation of a “Guyana Esequiba” province in a region Guyana has administered for over a century. He also said oil, gas and mining licenses must be issued immediately. Guyanese President Irfaan Ali called Maduro’s statements a “direct threat” against his country, and rejected the measures announced by the Venezuelan leader. On Sunday, Venezuela held a controversial non-binding referendum on the region’s fate that yielded an overwhelming 95-percent “yes” vote for Caracas’ designs on Essequibo, or Esequiba as it is known in Venezuela. Maduro gave an ultimatum to oil companies working under concessions given by Guyana to withdraw their operations within three months. He also said a town bordering the disputed area, Tumeremo, would become the headquarters of Venezuelan efforts to defend its interests there, adding authorities would conduct a census and begin issuing identity cards without giving details of how that would occur. Earlier Tuesday, Guyana said it would approach the UN Security Council for help if Venezuela makes any moves following the referendum, which Guyana had sought to stop with an urgent application to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague. Guyana’s Attorney General Anil Nandlall told AFP “any action or any attempt to take any action pursuant to the referendum will necessitate a resort to the UN Security Council as an injured party.”
The preliminary research, which hasn’t been peer reviewed, is from law professors at Columbia University and New York University and details a “significant” and “unusual” spike five days before the attacks in short selling in the most popular fund linked to Israeli companies. Short selling is a way to bet against the value of a security. Those bets against the value of the MSCI Israel Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) in the days before the October 7 attack “far exceeded” the short selling activity that took place during the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2014 Israel-Gaza war and the 2008 global financial crisis, the paper finds. “Our findings suggest that traders informed about the coming attacks profited from these tragic events,” the authors wrote. A ‘shocking’ paper Jonathan Macey, a professor at Yale Law School, told CNN the paper is “shocking.” “The evidence that informed traders profited by anticipating the terrorist attack of October 7 is strong,” he said. “Regulators appear to lack the ability to discover the entities responsible for this trading, which is unfortunate. ” The authors’ most striking finding is a surge in short sales—bets that a security’s price will fall—of an exchange-traded fund (etf) listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker eis, which tracks an index of Israeli shares. In September an average of 1,581 shares a day of EIS were sold short, representing 17% of the daily total trading volume. On October 2nd, five days before the attacks, a whopping 227,820 shares were shorted, representing 99% of total volume. Any other claim is baseless.” During a recent visit by senior IDF officers to various brigade headquarters, a troubling revelation came to light. It became apparent that surveillance camera footage along the Gaza border, dating back to the day the war with Hamas broke out, had mysteriously vanished. The Israeli army released footage on October 22 of its Maglan commando unit deploying a new precision-guided 120mm mortar bomb called the Iron Sting, against Hamas in Gaza. Yet, more than one month after Israel launched the aerial bombardment of Gaza following a surprise Hamas attack, it has killed at least 11,400 Palestinian civilians, and injured 30,000 in the besieged strip and the occupied West Bank.
