Now we’ve been told a wider ‘reorganisation’ is underway and this show may be allowed to return to FM in November 2020.

UK’s chief scientific adviser Patrick Vallance has £600,000 of shares in vaccine maker GSK – Sir Patrick Vallance has shares in drugs giant GlaxoSmithKline – Sir Patrick Vallance has £600,000 of shares in a pharmaceuticals giant contracted to develop a Covid vaccine for the Government, a report has revealed. The Chief Scientific Adviser, who leads the Government’s expert panel on vaccines, holds 43,111 shares in GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) from his time as president of the drugs company. According to the Telegraph, accounts show Sir Patrick held 404,201 shares when he resigned in 2018 – worth £6.1 million at today’s price. He has already sold more than £5 million in shares he received during his six-year tenure with the company. GSK is one of over 20 pharmaceutical firms around the world racing to provide a vaccine for coronavirus. The manufacturer has deals with the British and US governments to supply them with jabs, subject to terms in a final contract. Insisting that Sir Patrick should have declared his stake in the company, a senior Conservative MP and ex-Cabinet minister told The Telegraph: ‘If he is making decisions on vaccines and advising the Government on them, then he either needs to divest himself of the shares or make a declaration every time he touches on the subject. ‘In the Commons, every time MPs raise an issue in which there is a registered interest, they have to declare it. Every time he is talking about vaccines or on TV, he should put it on the table.’ It is unclear whether Vallance has declared his interest at any stage. Health Secretary Matt Hancock has denied that Sir Patrick’s shares in GSK present a conflict of interest…..

Coronavirus: Group of 40 Tory rebels bid to force PM to offer vote on COVID-19 powers – The potential rebellion reflects the unease among some Conservatives about the continuing use of powers and new restrictions. – Boris Johnson is facing the prospect of a Tory rebellion over the Coronavirus Act – A group of more than 40 Conservative MPs are bidding to force the government to give parliament a vote before the renewal of ministers’ coronavirus powers. Sir Graham Brady, the chair of the influential 1922 Committee of Tory backbenchers, is leading the cross-party effort to amend emergency COVID-19 legislation. Powers under the Coronavirus Act, which was passed in March, have to be renewed by parliament every six months. The potential Tory rebellion reflects the unease among some Conservative MPs about the continuing use of the powers and the latest restrictions announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson this week. Ahead of their first renewal next Wednesday, Sir Graham is seeking to add a provision that each time new powers are used by ministers under the Coronavirus Act, parliament should have the opportunity to debate and vote on their use. His amendment to next Wednesday’s motion has been backed by 40 other Conservative MPs – including former cabinet ministers Sir Iain Duncan Smith, David Davis, Esther McVey and Sir John Redwood – as well as senior Labour MPs Harriet Harman and John Cryer, and the DUP’s Ian Paisley and Sammy Wilson. Former government minister Steve Baker, who is supporting Sir Graham’s amendment, has also tabled his own amendment to omit Schedule 21 powers from the act’s renewal. Schedule 21 of the Coronavirus Act specifies the powers given to police officers, public health officers and immigration officers to take actions against “potentially infectious” people. It also creates criminal offences for non-compliance. A recent Crown Prosecution Service review found that all 121 cases under the Coronavirus Act were found to have been incorrectly charged because there was no evidence they covered potentially infectious people…

Lies, Damned Lies, & UK Health Statistics: The Deadly Danger Of False Positives – Imagine 10,000 people getting tested using those swabs you see on TV. We have a good estimate of the general prevalence of the virus from the ONS, who are wholly independent (from Pillar 2 testing) and are testing only a few people a day, around one per cent of the numbers recently tested in Pillar 2. It is reasonable to assume that most of the time, those being tested do not have symptoms. People were asked to only seek a test if they have symptoms. However, we know from TV news and stories on social media from sampling staff, from stern guidance from the Health Minister and the surprising fact that in numerous locations around the country, the local council is leafleting people’s houses, street by street to come and get tested. The bottom line is that it is reasonable to expect the prevalence of the virus to be close to the number found by ONS, because they sample randomly, and would pick up symptomatic and asymptomatic people in proportion to their presence in the community. As of the most recent ONS survey, to a first approximation, the virus was found in 1 in every 1000 people. This can also be written as 0.1%. So when all these 10,000 people are tested in Pillar 2, you’d expect 10 true positives to be found (false negatives can be an issue when the virus is very common, but in this community setting, it is statistically unimportant and so I have chosen to ignore it, better to focus only on false positives). So, what is the false positive rate of testing in Pillar 2? For months, this has been a concern. It appears that it isn’t known, even though as I’ve mentioned, you absolutely need to know it in order to work out whether the diagnostic test has any value! What do we know about the false positive rate? Well, we do know that the Government’s own scientists were very concerned about it, and a report on this problem was sent to SAGE dated June 3rd 2020. I quote: “Unless we understand the operational false positive rate of the UK’s RT-PCR testing system, we risk over-estimating the COVID-19 incidence, the demand on track and trace and the extent of asymptomatic infection”. In that same report, the authors helpfully listed the lowest to highest false positive rate of dozens of tests using the same technology. The lowest value for false positive rate was 0.8%. Allow me to explain the impact of a false positive rate of 0.8% on Pillar 2. We return to our 10,000 people who’ve volunteered to get tested, and the expected ten with virus (0.1% prevalence or 1:1000) have been identified by the PCR test. But now we’ve to calculate how many false positives are to accompanying them. The shocking answer is 80. 80 is 0.8% of 10,000. That’s how many false positives you’d get every time you were to use a Pillar 2 test on a group of that size. The effect of this is, in this example, where 10,000 people have been tested in Pillar 2, could be summarised in a headline like this: “90 new cases were identified today” (10 real positive cases and 80 false positives). But we know this is wildly incorrect. Unknown to the poor technician, there were in this example, only 10 real cases. 80 did not even have a piece of viral RNA in their sample. They are really false positives.

Covid-19 Tests could be picking up dead virus – Coronavirus: Tests ‘could be picking up dead virus’ The main test used to diagnose coronavirus is so sensitive it could be picking up fragments of dead virus from old infections, scientists say. Most people are infectious only for about a week, but could test positive weeks afterwards. Researchers say this could be leading to an over-estimate of the current scale of the pandemic. But some experts say it is uncertain how a reliable test can be produced that doesn’t risk missing cases. Prof Carl Heneghan, one of the study’s authors, said instead of giving a “yes/no” result based on whether any virus is detected, tests should have a cut-off point so that very small amounts of virus do not trigger a positive result. He believes the detection of traces of old virus could partly explain why the number of cases is rising while hospital admissions remain stable. The University of Oxford’s Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine reviewed the evidence from 25 studies where virus specimens from positive tests were put in a petri dish to see whether they would grow. This method of “viral culturing” can indicate whether the positive test has picked up active virus which can reproduce and spread, or just dead virus fragments which won’t grow in the lab, or in a person.

Evictions as eviction protection ends.  Keir Starmer tells Labour conference: we deserved to lose election – Starmer uses first party conference speech as leader to set out how Labour has changed – Keir Starmer has staked out his intention to make Labour a “competent, credible” opposition, using his first conference speech as leader to promise a new beginning for the party and to say that under Jeremy Corbyn it deserved to lose the 2019 election. Making the speech in a near-empty arts centre in Doncaster as part of Labour’s virtual conference, Starmer condemned Boris Johnson in deeply personal terms, calling the prime minister fundamentally unserious, and “just not up to the job”. He also criticised what he said were repeated government failings over coronavirus, as well as with education and social care, saying the state of the latter system was “a disgrace to a rich nation”. Significant sections of the speech sought to recast Starmer as a different leader to Corbyn, based not just on perceived competence but Starmer’s repeated references to his patriotism, for example his family’s pride when he was awarded a knighthood at Buckingham Palace for his previous work as director of public prosecutions. The speech won a generally favourable reception from those within Labour and the unions, although Momentum, the Jeremy Corbyn-linked campaign group called it “a missed opportunity to show substance”. A key element was an appeal to former Labour voters in “red wall” seats in northern England and the Midlands to look again at the party. Starmer was introduced by Ruth Smeeth, the former Labour MP for Stoke-on-Trent North, who lost her seat in December’s election. It was pointless complaining about the result, Starmer said, adding: “Let’s be brutally honest with ourselves. When you lose an election in a democracy, you deserve to. You don’t look at the electorate and ask them: ‘What were you thinking?’ You look at yourself and ask: ‘What were we doing?’ “The Labour party has lost four general elections in a row. We’ve granted the Tories a decade of power. The Tories have had as many election winners in five years as we’ve had in 75. It’s a betrayal of what we believe in to let this go on. Ex soldiers against ‘green light for torture’ Overseas Operations Bill … Veterans slam Labour’s ‘blatant fence sitting’ as Starmer sacks ministers daring to vote against war crimes bill – Military veterans have condemned Labour’s mass abstention from a Commons vote on the Tory Overseas Operations Bill which critics say could decriminalise torture during military operations. Their comments come after a fiery debate in Parliament on 23 September which saw three Labour MPs, including the popular socialist Nadia Whittome, sacked for rebelling against party leader Keir Starmer’s orders to abstain: Labour’s shadow defence secretary John Healey argued that the bill creates the risk that the very gravest crimes including torture and other war crimes go unpunished Defence minister Ben Wallace shot back by saying it was Labour’s illegal wars which had created the situation in the first place. Veterans, whose voices are usually absent from such discussions, have now told their side. Former soldier Jimmy Young told The Canary that he was concerned about how far the new Labour leadership would go to win right-wing votes: I understand that they’re trying to take back the language of patriotism for the right and claw back voters in that way, but to abstain on a bill that would essentially make actual war crimes easier to happen/harder to prosecute, it looks more like blatant fence sitting than it does ‘We’re the party that looks after squaddies, lads’. He added: Moral principles should never have to play second fiddle to aesthetical voter reach, and its a bit unnerving of the direction Labour might lurch to. A former paratrooper and Iraq veteran, who asked not to be named, said the bill had implications not just for overseas operations, but also for the domestic rule of law: The whole thing undermines the country, making it look like a tinpot dictatorship to the rest of the world. As a soldier, I never thought we should be above the law. It undermines the Army and the standards and ethos it tries to drill into us. It is quite honestly an insult to ordinary soldiers who pride themselves on professionalism. And even from a selfish British pov [point of view] precedents set abroad tend to come back to the UK in one way or another. Ireland is the perfect example of that when we look at things like policing. He also warned that the bill was an attack on the rights of current and former military personnel to make claims against the military for negligence and injury: The bit on soldiers and veterans themselves [being] unable to make legal claims is infuriating. Spent years listening to words like “betrayed” being used by soldiers, civvies and politicians to describe particularly those on the left. Blokes aren’t daft, army life is precarious. And we have little to no say. Expected to damage our bodies and then when we are no good, unlike the officer class, we’re just thrown to the side. This feels like another betrayal.

The visible increase is causing fresh worry for some residents for whom the matter is a “major source of concern”. Recent data from Bristol City Council shows there are about 40 locations across the city where people live in vans parked on the street. Five of these encampments have been assessed as having a “high impact” on the surrounding neighbourhood. And the numbers are starting to swell after nine months of growth was interrupted by a sharp drop during lockdown. The fresh information comes ten months after the council introduced a new policy for dealing with van dwellers that sought to balance the needs of residents with those of people choosing an alternative lifestyle. It was revealed in a response to questions put to city mayor Marvin Rees at this month’s full council meeting. Conservative councillor Steve Smith, who sought the latest figures, said: “These unauthorised sites on highways continue to be a major source of concern for residents in my ward.” Cllr Smith represents the people of Westbury-on-Trym and Henleaze, where two roads are popular with van dwellers – Parry’s Lane on Durdham Down and nearby Westbury Park close to the White Tree Roundabout. Parry’s Lane is especially popular and is often packed end-to-end with large white camper vans parked on both sides of the through road. The written response provided to Cllr Smith identified Parry’s Lane as one of five encampments in the city assessed as having a “high impact” by officers from the council and Avon and Somerset Police. The other four encampments are in Maurice Road next to St Andrew’s Park in St Andrew’s, Kellaway Avenue which runs through Horfield and Bishopston, Co-operation Road in Greenbank, and Mina Road and nearby streets in St Werburgh’s. Whether van dwellers are having a high or low impact on the neighbourhood is assessed using evidence generally derived from police and witness statements, photographs and videos, and officer observations, the council said. The official response noted the number of occupied vehicles in Bristol began rising in June after a sharp drop during the first two months of lockdown. A full survey carried out in March, just before lockdown, found the number of occupied vehicles had grown during the previous nine months…

Even the police don’t want more powers to evict Traveller camps – investigation reveals – 15 September 2020 – Even the police don’t want more powers to evict Traveller camps – investigation reveals – Police do not want more powers to evict unauthorised Traveller camps and instead want more legal sites built – an investigation by the charity Friends Families and Travellers (FFT) has revealed. – The national charity submitted freedom of information requests to all Police Forces and Police and Crime Commissioners in England and Wales, as well as the National Police Chief Council and the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners to get their submissions to the Government’s 2019 consultation ‘Strengthening police powers to tackle unauthorised encampments’.  In the consultation the Government threatened to: – Make trespass a crime – resulting in prison, a fine or your vehicle being taken from you. – Make it a crime for you to stop alongside or on the road – they will be able to move you along. = Make it so police can act when there is two vehicles, instead of six. A car, a trailer and a van would count as three vehicles. A horse drawn wagon would also count as a vehicle, say lawyers. – Make it so police can force you to go to a transit site in another county. – Make it so you are banned from an area for one year instead of three months. – The Government have failed Gypsy and Traveller communities  ‘The Government have failed Gypsy and Traveller communities’ say FFT. Travellers at Appleby Horse Fair (c) Natasha Quarmby – The FFT research shows that only one out of five bodies who responded with their submissions supported the Government proposals to criminalise unauthorised encampments and nearly all of police bodies called for more site provision. Less than one in five agreed with the Home Office proposals to give police power to seize vehicles of those on unauthorised encampments. “The findings clearly demonstrate that only a small percentage of police respondents are in favour of criminalising trespass or strengthening of existing powers, stressing that this will be ineffective unless there is increased site provision,” say Friends Families and Travellers. The full FFT report on their investigation can be seen here. The consultation closed in March 2020 and the Government is expected to release their own results on the consultation later this autumn. There is no point in bringing in more laws which tell Travellers where they can’t go when you aren’t telling them where they can go – Abbie Kirkby, Advice and Policy Manager at Friends, Families and Travellers said: “The hostile approach taken by this Government towards Gypsies and Travellers must stop. We have seen huge opposition to these proposals, opposition not only from the police but from across society in recognition of the implications for human rights and civil liberties. The Government have failed Gypsy and Traveller communities – there is no point in bringing in more laws which tell Travellers where they can’t go when you aren’t telling them where they can go.” In their response to the consultation, the National Police Chiefs Council and the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners said, “We believe that criminalising unauthorised encampments is not acceptable. Complete criminalisation of trespass would likely lead to legal action in terms of incompatibility with regard to the Human Rights Act 1998 and the Public Sector Equality Duty under the Equality Act 2010, most likely on the grounds of how could such an increase in powers be proportionate and reasonable when there are insufficient pitches and stopping places?” The Travellers’ Times understands that Lawyers for Gypsies and Travellers are set to challenge in the High Court any new laws strengthening police powers to evict camps.

US journalist found dead in Istanbul under ‘suspicious’ circumstances – – Andre Vltchek, a Russian-born American journalist, was found dead in his car in Istanbul on Tuesday. Police are treating the circumstances around his death as “suspicious.” The 57-year-old journalist was traveling with his wife Rossie Indira and two drivers who took them from the northern province of Samsun where they stayed for nine days before going to Istanbul. Upon arriving at their hotel in Istanbul’s Karaköy district in the early hours of Tuesday morning, Indira tried to wake Vltchek who she presumed to be asleep, but he was unresponsive. An ambulance was called, and paramedics confirmed that Vltchek had died. Police cordoned off the area while an investigation was launched into his death, during which the journalist’s wife and two drivers will be questioned. Vltchek, an investigative journalist who was born in Russia and became a naturalized U.S. citizen, worked as a reporter in conflict zones from Bosnia to East Timor for a long time. He also penned articles for Der Spiegel and The Guardian. He has been in Turkey for a while and gave an interview to the Aydınlık daily earlier this month. Wife of dead American journalist testifies on husband’s body conditions – The wife of the 57-year-old American journalist Andre Vltchek, who was found dead in his car in the Karaköy neighborhood of Istanbul, bared her testimony to the police, underlining her husband’s condition on late Sept. 22. “One of his legs was paralyzed. He also had diabetes. He was taking two pills,” said Rossie Indira Vltchek, adding details about her husband’s illnesses. “We were coming from Samsun province to Istanbul. When we approached Istanbul, he started sleeping. In the morning we came in front of the hotel. I wanted to wake him up, but he did not respond,” noted the wife. According to the police sources, the couple departed from the Black Sea province of Samsun to Istanbul with a rented VIP van with two drivers. The journalist was found dead in front of the hotel on early Sept. 22. Police declared it as “suspicious death” and seized all belongings in the van. Answering a question about why they went to Samsun, the wife told the police, “Some recommended that the province had fresh air. We were in Serbia on Sept. 5. Then we moved to Samsun. Then we rented the van and the drivers.”…

Stephen Cohen, Noted Author and Historian of Russia, Dies at 81 – SEP 21, 2020 – Noted historian Stephen Cohen died Friday at 81 of lung cancer. Cohen was a writer and professor at New York University and Princeton University who studied Russia, including the rise and fall of communism and Russian leadership. Stephen Cohen appeared on Democracy Now! many times. Here he is in December 2016, speaking about U.S.-Russia relations following the election of Donald Trump. Stephen Cohen: “We now have three Cold War fronts that are fraught with hot war, the possibility of hot war — the Baltic area, Ukraine and Syria — between two nuclear powers. Things are very, very dangerous. We desperately need in this country a discussion of American policy toward Russia. We can’t keep saying an untruth, that this new Cold War is solely the fault of Putin.” That was Stephen Cohen, who died Friday. He is survived by his three children, four grandchildren and his spouse, Katrina vanden Heuvel, editorial director and publisher of The Nation…

Julian Assange ‘very high’ risk of suicide if extradited to US, psychiatrist tells court – Julian Assange – Craig Murray  – Your Man in the Public Gallery: Assange Hearing Day 17 – I must reveal details of Julian’s medical condition which I had withheld, but I think the situation is so serious I must now do that. I did not report that Professor Michael Kopelman gave evidence that, among other preparations for suicide, Julian Assange had hidden a razor blade in his folded underwear, but this had been discovered in a search of his cell. As I did report, Kopelman was subjected to an extremely aggressive cross-examination by James Lewis, which in the morning had focused on the notion that Julian Assange’s mental illness was simply malingering, and that Kopelman had failed to detect this. The razor blade was a key factor in Lewis’s browbeating of Kopelman, and he attacked him on it again and again and again. Lewis stated that Kopelman “relied on” the razor blade story for his diagnosis. He then proceeded to portray it as a fantasy concocted by Assange to support his malingering. Lewis asked Kopelman repeatedly why, if the story were true, it was not in Dr Daly’s clinical notes? Surely if a prisoner, known to be depressive, had a razor blade found in his cell, it would be in the prison medical records? Why had Prof Kopelman failed to note in his report that there was no evidence for the razor blade in Dr Daly’s medical records? Was he hiding that information? Was it not very strange that this incident would not be in the medical notes? In an attempt to humiliate Kopelman, Lewis said “You say you do not rely on the razor blade for your diagnosis. But you do rely on it. Let us then look at your report. You rely on the razor blade at paragraph 8. You mention it again at paragraph 11a. Then 11c. Then paragraph 14, paragraph 16, 17b, 18a. Then we come to the next section and the razor blade is there at paragraph 27 and 28. Then again in the summary it is at paragraphs 36 and again at paragraph 38. So tell me Professor, how can you say that you do not rely on the razor blade?” Lewis then went on to invite Kopelman to change his diagnosis. He asked him more than once if his diagnosis would be different if there was no razor blade and it were an invention by Assange. Kopelman was plainly unnerved by this attack. He agreed it was “very odd indeed” it was not mentioned in the medical notes if it were true. The plain attack that he had naively believed an obvious lie disconcerted Kopelman. Except it was Lewis who was not telling the truth. There really was a concealed razor blade, and what Assange had told Kopelman, and what Kopelman had believed, was true in every single detail. In a scene straight out of a TV legal drama, during Kopelman’s testimony, the defence had managed to obtain the charge sheet from Belmarsh Prison – Assange had been charged with the offence of the razor blade. The charge sheet is dated 09.00 on 7 May 2019, and this is what it reads: Governor, On the 05/05/19 at approximately 15.30, myself and Officer Carroll were conducting a routine matrix search in 2-1-37 solely occupied by Mr Assange A9379AY. He was asked before we began the search if everything in the cell belonged to him, to which he replied “To my knowledge yes”. During the process of this search I lifted a pair of his personal underwear up whilst searching the cupboard. When I lifted them I heard a metal object drop inside the cupboard. When I investigated what it was I saw half of a razor blade which had been concealed in his personal underwear. This had now been placed in evidence bag number M0001094. This concludes my report Signed Off Locke I was later shown a copy and got a quick shot: When on Tuesday Edward Fitzgerald QC produced this charge sheet in court, it did not appear to be news to the prosecution. James Lewis QC panicked. Rather too quickly, Lewis leapt to his feet and asked the judge that it should be noted that he had never said that there was no razor blade. Fitzgerald responded that was not the impression that had been given. From the witness box and under oath, Kopelman stated that was not the impression he had been given either.

Covid 19.  Hitachi pulled out of nuclear power – BBC reporting on collapse of nuclear power industry in UK.  Johnny Aldridge on the now scrapped Bradwell B nuclear power station.  Chris Busby on green build projects after Covid 19. – Hitachi scraps plan for UK nuclear plant Japan’s Hitachi on Wednesday scrapped its multi-billion-pound nuclear plant project in Wales in face of the deteriorating investment environment, in a blow to Britain’s atomic energy programme. The project in Anglesey, already suspended for 20 months because of financial difficulties, was cancelled as “the investment environment has become increasingly severe due to the impact of Covid-19”, Hitachi said in a statement. The company said it would consult with the UK government and others regarding the fate of its licences and the Wylfa Newydd site that would have housed two reactors. “We recognise that this will be very disappointing news for the people of North Wales,” the British government said in a statement. It insisted, however, that “nuclear power will play a key role in the UK’s future energy mix” as the country transitions “to a low-carbon economy”. The cost of building the Anglesey plant had been estimated at up to £20 billion ($25.4 billion, 21.4 billion euros). Its targeted production capacity was nearly three gigawatts — enough to supply around six percent of Britain’s electricity needs. As recently as last month, Hitachi’s Horizon Nuclear subsidiary had insisted it was still committed to the project. Hitachi had been waiting for the British government’s latest energy strategy, which could potentially include new financing models for the nuclear industry. – ‘Urgent need for progress’ – Tom Greatrex, chief executive of Britain’s Nuclear Industry Association, said Hitachi’s decision “underscores the urgent need for progress on new nuclear projects in the UK if net zero carbon emissions is to become a reality”. The government “can secure these economic and environmental opportunities for future generations by setting out a clear pathway for new nuclear power in forthcoming policy announcements,” he said in a statement. Britain’s nuclear power plants built in the last century have either closed or are coming to the end of their lifespan. But the country wants to maintain the 20 percent of electricity it generates from nuclear power to help meet its pledge to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2050 and tackle climate change. The Hinkley Point scheme in southwest England, the only nuclear project under construction, is due to be completed in 2025. However, there is mounting concern at Chinese involvement in the project and further planned British nuclear plants amid strained diplomatic ties between London and Beijing. China General Nuclear Power (CGN) is working alongside France’s EDF in the construction of Hinkley Point, while the pair are also awaiting formal approval for a new plant at Sizewell on the Suffolk coast in eastern England. In both cases, CGN is the minority partner. But in another project, the Bradwell nuclear reactor in southeastern England, it is CGN that will hold the majority stake, pending UK government approval of the project. Diplomatic relations between London and Beijing are fraught after China introduced a controversial security law in former British colony Hong Kong. In addition, Britain recently ordered the phased removal of equipment belonging to Chinese mobile giant Huawei from its 5G network amid alleged security concerns. “If CGN is blocked from Bradwell, they might walk out on Hinkley leaving a huge funding gap,” Steve Thomas, a professor of energy policy at London’s University of Greenwich, told AFP. He described Hitachi’s decision as a “blow” to the UK government. Justin Bowden, a senior official at British energy union GMB, said having foreign companies and governments to fund the UK’s future energy needs was a “fanciful experiment”. “This utterly predictable announcement from Hitachi is the outcome of successive (UK) government failures to act decisively around new nuclear, and in particular how it is financed,” Bowden said. The move also dents Japan’s attempts to expand its nuclear businesses overseas after the Fukushima catastrophe effectively halted demand for new reactors in its home market. They are not our friends.” -Jeff Gibbs, director of “Planet of the Humans” It is hard to think of an American film that provoked a greater backlash in 2020 than “Planet of the Humans.” Focused on the theme of planetary extinction and fanciful proposals to ward it off, the documentary was released for free on YouTube on April 21. The date was significant not only because it was the eve of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, but because a global pandemic was tearing through America’s social fabric and exposing the human toll of the country’s globalized, growth-obsessed economic model. As the director of the documentary, Jeff Gibbs, explained, “When we focus on climate change only as the thing destroying the planet and we demand solutions, we get used by forces of capitalism who want to continue to sell us the disastrous illusion that we can mine and smelt and industrialize our way out of this extinction event. And again, behind the scenes, much of what we’re doing to ‘save’ the planet is to burn the ‘bio’ of the planet as green energy.” Bill McKibben, the founder of 350.org and guru of climate justice activism, is seen throughout “Planet of the Humans” consorting with Wall Street executives and pushing fossil fuel divestment campaigns that enable powerful institutions to reshuffle their assets into plastics and mining while burnishing their image. McKibben has even called for environmentalists to cooperate with the Pentagon, one of the world’s worst polluters and greatest exporters of violence, because “when it speaks frankly, [it] has the potential to reach Americans who won’t listen to scientists.” By Max Blumenthal Even before “Planet of the Humans” was released, however, the producers of the film had fallen under pressure to retract it. Upon the film’s release, a who’s who of self-styled climate justice activists proceeded to blanket the internet with accusations that it was a racist, “eco-fascist” screed that deliberately advanced the interests of the oil and gas industry. When “Planet of the Humans” was briefly yanked from YouTube thanks to a questionable copyright claim by an angry climate warrior, the free speech organization Pen America issued a remarkable statement characterizing the demands for retraction as a coordinated censorship campaign. Perhaps the most provocative critique contained in “Planet of the Humans” was the portrayal of full-time climate warriors like McKibben as de facto lobbyists for green tech billionaires and Wall Street investors determined to get their hands on the whopping $50 trillion profit opportunity that a full transition to renewable technology represents. Why have figures like Google CEO Eric Schmidt, Michael Bloomberg, Virgin’s Richard Branson, and Tesla founder Elon Musk been plowing their fortunes into climate advocacy? The documentary taunted those who accepted these oligarchs’ gestures of environmental concern at face value. The Michael Moore-produced ‘Planet of the Humans’ faced a coordinated suppression campaign led by professional climate activists backed by the same ‘green’ billionaires, Wall Street investors, industry insiders and family foundations skewered in the film. What had this documentary done to inflame so much opposition from the faces and voices of professional climate justice activism? First, it probed the well-established shortcomings of renewable energy sources like solar and wind power that have been marketed as a green panacea. “Planet of the Humans” portrayed these technologies as anything but green, surveying the environmental damage already caused by solar and wind farms, which require heavy mining and smelting to produce, destroy swaths of pristine land, and sometimes demand natural gas to operate. While major environmental outfits have lobbied for a Green New Deal to fuel a renewables-based industrial revolution, and are now banking on a Democratic presidency to enact their proposals, “Planet of the Humans” put forward a radical critique that called their entire agenda into question. ‘Green’ billionaires behind professional activist network that led suppression of ‘Planet of the Humans’ documentary “Planet of the Humans” crossed another bright green line by taking aim at the self-proclaimed climate justice activists themselves, painting them as opportunists who had been willingly co-opted by predatory capitalists. The filmmakers highlighted the role of family foundations like the Rockefeller Brothers Fund in cultivating a class of professional activists that tend toward greenwashing partnerships with Wall Street and the Democratic Party to coalitions with anti-capitalist militants and anti-war groups. “We must take control of our environmental movement and our future from billionaires and their permanent war on Planet Earth. Julian Assange’s extradition court case:  John Pilger on freeing Julian Assange;  Trump offered Assange a pardon – Trump ‘offered Assange pardon’ in return for hacked emails source – Assange’s lawyer says deal offered in exchange for source for the hacking of Democratic emails before 2016 election. – US President Donald Trump offered to pardon Julian Assange if the WikiLeaks founder provided the source for the hacking of Democratic National Committee emails before the 2016 US presidential elections, a London court has been told. On Friday, Assange’s lawyer said she observed a meeting where former Republican US Representative Dana Rohrabacher and Charles Johnson, an associate known to have close ties to the Trump campaign, made the offer in 2017. Lawyer Jennifer Robinson said Assange was told Trump approved of the meeting and Rohrabacher would later meet the president to discuss the reaction to the proposed deal. She said the deal was presented to Assange as a “win-win” solution that would allow him “to get on with his life” and in return would also politically benefit Trump. “The proposal put forward by Congressman Rohrabacher was that Assange identify the source for the 2016 election publications in return for some form of pardon,” Robinson said in a witness statement given to the court. During the 2016 US presidential campaign, WikiLeaks published a series of Democratic National Committee emails damaging to Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton that US intelligence believes were hacked by Russia as part of its effort to influence the election. Russia denied meddling and Trump has denied any campaign collusion with Moscow. A probe by former US Special Counsel Robert Mueller did not establish that members of Trump’s campaign conspired with Russia during the election. Australian-born Assange, 49, is fighting extradition from the United Kingdom to the United States, where he is charged with conspiring to hack government computers and violating an espionage law over the release of confidential cables by WikiLeaks in 2010-2011. The charges carry a maximum sentence of 175 years in prison…

Former Ambassador Craig Murray: Your Man in the Public Gallery: Assange Hearing Day 11  – John Goetz was the first witness this morning. Senior Investigations Editor at NDR since 2011, he was at Der Spiegel from 2007-11. He had published a series of articles on German involvement in the Afghan War, including one on a bombing raid on Kunduz which massacred civilians, for which he had won Germany’s highest journalism award. In June 2010 he went to London to meet with Wikileaks and the Guardian to work on the Afghan War Logs. – In a series of meetings in “the bunker” at the Guardian with the NYT and the other major media partners, the partnership was formed whereby all would pool effort in researching the Afghan War Logs but each party would choose and publish his own stories. This cooperative venture between five major news organisations – normally rivals – was unique at the time. – Goetz had been struck by what seemed to him Julian Assange’s obsession with the security of the material. He insisted everything was encrypted and strict protocols were in place for handling the material. This had been new territory for the journalists. The New York Times was tasked with liaison with the White House, the Department of Defence and State Department on questions of handling the material. – Asked by Mark Summers to characterise the Afghan War Logs, Goetz said that they were fascinating first-hand material giving low level reports on actual operations. This was eye witness material which sometimes lacked the larger view. There was abundant first-hand evidence of war crimes. He had worked with Nick Davies of the Guardian on the Task Force 373 story. – Julian Assange had been most concerned to find the names in the papers. He spent a lot of time working out technical ways to identify names in the tens of thousands of documents. Mark Summers asked f he had been looking for the names for the purpose of redaction, and Goetz confirmed it was for redaction. He had interviewed Assange on the harm minimisation programme of the operation. – On behalf of the group Eric Schmitt of the NYT had been speaking to the White House and he had sent an email identifying 15,000 documents the White House did not want published to prevent harm to individuals or to American interests. It was agreed not to publish these documents and they were not published. Summers asked Goetz if he was aware of any names that slipped through, and he replied not. – Goetz was not so involved for family reasons when the consortium went through the same process with the Iraq war logs. But he knew that when a large number of these were released in the USA under a FOIA request, it was seen that Wikileaks had redacted those they released more heavily than the Department of Defense did. Goetz recalled an email from David Leigh of the Guardian stating that publication of some stories was delayed because of the amount of time Wikileaks were devoting to the redaction process to get rid of the “bad stuff”….

On August 2, all of metropolitan Melbourne was placed on ultra-strict, Stage Four restrictions with residents banned from straying more than 5km from home. Melbourne’s five million residents are also fined $1,652 if they are outside between the hours of 8pm and 5am – despite police not requesting a curfew. Restrictions are set be extended into late October, unless there were fewer than five new daily cases over two weeks. Swinburne University Law School dean Professor Mirko Bagaric noted Melburnians would effectively have been locked up for six months. He argued Victoria’s Socialist Left faction Labor Premier Daniel Andrews was even harsher on Melburnians than the communist governments of China and North Korea as part of a flawed elimination strategy. ‘Only Victoria has chosen to barricade its citizens,’ Professor Bagaric told Daily Mail Australia….

Mild mutation D614G coronavirus also gives positive test? Is the D614G Coronavirus Mutation a New, Less Deadly, Strain? – A version of the coronavirus known as D614G has hit headlines in recent days, after a Malaysian official said it was linked to two outbreaks and claimed it may affect vaccine development. This was followed by a disease expert claiming D614G may be more infectious but less deadly, potentially explaining falling COVID-19 fatality rates around the world. Paul Tambyah, senior consultant at the National University of Singapore and president-elect of the International Society of Infectious Diseases told Reuters on Tuesday evidence suggests the proliferation of D614G in some parts of the world has been accompanied by a drop in death rates. This indicates it may be less deadly than other forms of the virus, he said. “Maybe that’s a good thing to have a virus that is more infectious but less deadly,” said Tambyah. He made the comment after the Malaysian director-general of health said the mutation had been linked to two outbreaks, Reuters reported. Noor Hisham Abdullah claimed D614G was ten times more infectious than other mutations, and vaccines under development may not be able to tackle it….

Consultation on Jubilee swimming pool extended by Bristol City Council around possible closure – A swimming pool in Bristol at risk of closure for the third time in eight years has had a temporary reprieve. The public consultation on Jubilee Pool in Knowle has been extended after more than 4,000 people signed a petition calling for it to be saved. According to Bristol City Council, the Victorian-era pool is facing mounting maintenance costs of at least £260,000 – something they say they cannot afford. Following protests – including the petition which amassed more than 2,000 signatures in one day – councillors voted to extend the public consultation by another month. That means residents now have until November to express their views regarding the pool’s future. Councilor Tim Rippington said: “Jubilee Pool is a much loved community facility for people in Knowle and across south Bristol, including in Brislington, where I live. “It is welcome news that the consultation into the future of the pool now looks set to be extended.” 

Margaret Thatcher, and Victor Rothschild, the man in the shadows – RT – Eyebrows have been raised around the world to see Brits in their thousands dancing through the night in spontaneous street parties following the death of 1980s Prime Minister ‘Iron Lady’ Margaret Thatcher. As the nickname suggests, she had a fearsome reputation round the world for hitting hard for Britain, but at home it was a different story. In the industrial North most knew several families who lost their livelihood on her watch. Londoners saw ominous shifting sands, homeless youngsters begging on the streets whom her regime had turned it’s back on. The taboo not a single commentator has broached though is the shadowy ‘advisory’ role played throughout her premiership by European banking fraternity’s Labour peer Lord Victor Rothschild. He was revealed in the book the Thatcher government tried to suppress, Peter Wright’s Spycatcher, to be behind London’s top secret service appointments. In 1986 Rothschild penned ‘Paying for Local Government’ the policy paper that led to the notorious Poll Tax that fell hardest on the poorest, and which brought Britons onto the streets of London in their hundreds of thousands in 1990, riots echoing London’s Poll Tax revolt of 1381. And according to the then BBC Chairman Marmaduke Hussey, Lord Victor also initiated the sacking in 1987 of the last independent-minded Director General of the BBC, a castration from which the corporation never quite recovered. One word captures the essence of the Thatcher legacy; ‘privatisation’. As an exasperated former Tory Prime Minster Harold Macmillan put it “she’s selling off the family silver!”. And so tens of mind-boggling billions of pounds of silver were auctioned off to the highest bidders, mostly to Rothschild’s kith and kin. From shipyards and public housing to telephones, steel, oil, gas and water, anyone in the world was free to own the infrastructure and manufacturing heart of Britain that was once collectively ‘ours’. Was this to pay the USA Lend-Lease second world war debts? To repay Britain’s humiliating 1976 IMF loan? Or simply to fill the hole left in the national accounts after Thatcher dropped income tax on Britain’s richest by more than half from 83% to 40%? Or was it just daylight robbery? When she refused to join the EMU, the forerunner to the vice-like Euro, she was promptly knifed in the back by those who sing her praises today. Since Thatcher, City institutions have bought up much of our politics and mass media, leaving a post-industrial wasteland ‘museum’ of a nation where the Joseph Rowntree Foundation recently estimated six-and-a-half million British adults are being cruelly blamed, punished and made destitute for ‘not wanting’ full-time jobs, that don’t exist. Today the cracks that Margaret and Victor’s turbo-charged crowbar opened up have become a chasm which is reawakening this nation’s anger at injustice. The £10 million of taxpayers money being spent on Lady Thatcher’s state funeral, by the millionaires for the millionaires, is rubbing salt in the wounds. Hundreds of thousands of Britons who know right from wrong will turn away and raise a solemn glass to the damnation of Margaret Thatcher and her ‘rehabilitation of greed’ this week, demanding better. The sleeping giant of the British public is rousing from its slumber. As millionaire Prime Minister David Cameron reads the Christian eulogy at Lady Thatcher’s lavish funeral, those of Britain’s ruling class who still have something resembling a conscience will do well to heed them. On April 10, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear announced plans to record the license plate numbers of Easter churchgoers and force them into self-quarantine for 14 Days. Fortunately, a judge overturned the edict. Less fortunate was Greenville, Mississippi, where police cars descended on King James Bible Baptist Church for scheduling a drive-up church service. Whitmer began taking a softer tone after a massive citizen protest erupted on April 15th.  The right to a speedy and public trial, and trial by jury is encoded in the Bill of Rights. Jury trials across the nation have been cancelled or postponed again, the suspensions are temporary, but how close are we to acclimating people to eliminating them altogether?Here are examples of egregious rights violations across the nation: A Colorado man was arrested and handcuffed in front of his six-year-old daughter for playing softball with her, which allegedly violated antisocial distancing requirements. Noteworthily, the police themselves were not wearing masks and violated social distancing in making the arrest. Residents of Cameron County, Texas, can face a $1,000 fine for not wearing some form of covering over their nose and mouth.  In Sedgwick County, Kansas, emulating the old Soviet Union, citizens are encouraged to use online forms to snitch on neighbors who may be violating stay-at-home mandates or operating non-essential businesses. Indiana’s Howard County has ordered businesses to stop selling non-essential goods, including books. So book-burning is now part of the medical martial law paradigm. On May 5, Shelley Luther was ordered to be jailed for seven days and fined $7,000 for reopening her Dallas hair salon in in defiance of lockdown restrictions. She was released from jail after the case received nationwide attention.  On May 13, in a scene becoming all too typical, police threw a New York mom onto a subway station floor, and handcuffed her in front of her child, not because she wasn’t wearing a mask, but because she wasn’t wearing it properly.  Google is reporting peoples movements to the government to track whether social distancing and limits on social gatherings are obeyed. Meanwhile, the White House has held a teleconference with execs from Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Twitter to help battle coronavirus, including discussion about how to stop the spread of coronavirus conspiracy theories. Overseas, the situation is often worse. In Singapore, sitting or standing too near another person is punishable by prison terms of up to 6 months and fines of up to $7,000.  In Tunisia, remotely controlled ‘robocops’ enforce lockdown rules and demand to see people’s travel permits. In Greece, Orthodox Bishop Seraphim Stergiulis was arrested for keeping his church open for worship. In Britain, police have set up online forms so people can snitch on neighbors who violate lockdown orders. Paris has banned outdoor exercise during daytime hours. The Danish Parliament has passed a draconian law authorizing the government to test, quarantine and vaccinate citizens without their consent. On May 9, an Australian mother who was peacefully protesting the lockdown’s violation of civil liberties, was arrested and her young son torn away from her.

He had been accused of brandishing a gun around and the police officers had a warrant for his arrest. However, the officers pulled up in unmarked vehicles, without wearing uniforms, and used trickery to draw him out. Sources claim the officers positioned themselves in a cul-de-sac often frequented by teenagers who would party and leave trash behind. The officers began making a lot of noise and Cooper came out to confront them, believing they were nothing more than drunken juveniles. The officers would not identify themselves so Cooper threatened to call the police. As he was heading back inside, shots were fired. The outcome saw a police officer being killed, but so was Cooper. Nobody knows who fired the first shot and it is unclear whether Bill Cooper carried a gun at the time of his death. The mystery surrounding Cooper’s death has led many into believing it was not accidental, but rather a carefully planned and executed plot to remove an “undesirable element.”

Arms dealer, sanctions buster John Bredenkamp dies aged 79 – BULAWAYO – John Bredenkamp, a controversial millionaire businessman who captained the national rugby side before independence has died, the Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) announced on Thursday. He was 79. “It is with a heavy and sad heart that the president of the ZRU announces the sad passing of our former Sables player and captain John Bredenkamp this morning,” the ZRU said in a statement. “May his family and friends be comforted during this sad time. The ZRU is at a loss for words on the passing of our former skipper. May his soul rest in eternal peace.” The cause of death was kidney failure, according to friends. One of Zimbabwe’s richest people, Bredenkamp was reputed to have amassed a personal fortune of US$870 million from activities such as sanctions busting on behalf of the Rhodesian regime, tobacco trading, arms sales and diamond mining in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Born in Kimberley, South Africa, in 1940, Bredenkamp moved to Zimbabwe with his parents as a child, and worked in the tobacco industry after finishing high school at Prince Edward in Harare. He went to work in the Netherlands before founding his own company, the Casalee Group, which was registered in Belgium. From there, Bredenkamp was involved in the sale of Rhodesian tobacco on world markets, through evasion of United Nations sanctions. His company grew to be the fifth biggest tobacco merchant in the world, before he sold it to Universal Leaf Tobacco in 1993…
