The growing economic might of BRICS countries, their significance as one of the main driving forces of global economic development, their substantial population and abundant natural resources form the foundation of their influence on the international scene. What Would a U.S. Debt Default Mean for the World? Failing to raise the debt ceiling could have global economic repercussions. U.S. President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy once again failed to reach a deal extending the $31.4 trillion U.S. debt ceiling on Monday. With less than 10 days until the United States potentially defaults on its debt, countries around the world are bracing for the economic waves that could ripple through the global economy if no deal is reached. The United States has never intentionally defaulted on its debt, so the exact impact that doing so now could have on the international financial system is unknown. However, most economists predict it would be bad—and widespread. “No corner of the global economy will be spared,” Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics, told The Associated Press. More than $500 billion in U.S. debt is traded globally every day, and much of that debt is held by foreign governments and investors. A default could see foreign investors charging the United States more money to borrow if Washington becomes a risky investment. Already high interest rates could soar. And some economists even predict a default could create worse conditions than during the 2008 global financial crisis. But one nation’s economic tragedy is another’s golden ticket. Fueled by fears of U.S. sanctions, both Russia and China have long sought to replace the dollar with the renminbi, reported FP’s Christina Lu, with the so-called BRICS nations considering establishing a common currency to spark de-dollarization. Defaulting on the country’s debt could be enough to convince third-party nations that the United States isn’t trustworthy and that their economies would be better served by investing in Moscow and Beijing.
Bristol special needs funding £42m in debt Bankruptcy warning for Bristol City Council as special needs education costs spiral Special needs education is costing the council millions over budget each year Council accountants are warning urgent action is needed to avoid bankruptcy as the cost of providing special needs education spirals. Bristol City Council spent millions of pounds over budget on special needs education, and is now working to bring this down despite rising demand. In the last financial year the council spent £94.6 million on the high needs block, £16 million more than was initially budgeted. Added to overspends on previous years, the council now has a total deficit of £42.5 million for special needs education, and just three years to reduce this. Normally councils are not legally allowed to keep spending more than they have budgeted for, and must balance their books. But parliament has given special permission for councils to run deficits in their schools budget — but only until March 2026. Dire warnings were sounded during a schools forum meeting on Tuesday, May 23, about what could happen in Bristol if this deficit isn’t reduced and the books aren’t balanced by the time this hard deadline is reached. One headteacher said: “This is going to be quite difficult.” Angel Lai, council finance manager, said: “There’s a risk to the local authority if we don’t turn the financial position around and we can’t afford it, because we don’t have the reserves to cover the overspend as it is, let alone if the position keeps on deteriorating. So it’s a huge financial risk to the local authority. “If we do nothing and let it carry on, when the statutory instrument ends the local council will run out of money. And if you run out of money — bankruptcy. So this is how severe the problem is. Based on modest forecasts provided by the Department for Education, by 2025/26 we are in a position to reach an in-year balance. But it will take us a bit of time.”…
Chris Youett, journalist, on universities as businesses taking on foreign students.- Foreign university students have been bringing relatives over and staying – Net migration in UK reaches new record of more than 600,000 Net migration to the UK has climbed to a record level, official statistics released today have revealed. Around 606,000 more people are estimated to have moved to the UK than left in the 12 months up to December last year, according to data from the Office of National Statistics (ONS). The increase is up from 504,000 in the 12 months up to June last year. Higher levels of immigration over the past 18 months are due to people travelling from non-EU countries to find work and study, the ONS said. People are also moving here for humanitarian purposes, from countries including Hong Kong and war-torn Ukraine. They also include overseas students – although there are signs that those who arrived in 2021 to study are starting to leave, according to the ONS data. The figures released today are significantly lower than expected, with predictions net migration could have soared to up to almost 1million. However they represent the Conservative party’s failure to deliver on a 2019 manifesto pledge to bring overall net migration numbers down after post-Brexit controls were introduced. Downing Street declined to apologise when questioned by journalists – as Labour mocked Home Secretary Suella Braverman for failing to appear in the Commons to address the figures. Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper asked: ‘Where is the Home Secretary who is in charge of these policies? ‘She’s gone to ground, there are reports she is not even going to do media, she has not come to this House.’ ‘What is the point of her?’ Ms Cooper said. Shadow immigration minister, Stephen Kinnock, earlier told LBC Radio: ‘They have failed to have a strategy in place for our local labour market, and as a result of that, employers are being forced to reach for overseas immigration. ‘We need a much more balanced approach, ensuring we have the immigration we need of course, but that there’s much more opportunity for skills, productivity training, workforce planning to get our economy firing on all cylinders again.’ Prime Minister Rishi Sunak conceded the numbers were too high – but denied they were ‘out of control’. “Numbers are too high, it’s as simple as that,’ he told ITV’s This Morning. ‘And I want to bring them down.’

Rodents are running riot across the country and new data shows the places hit hardest by invasions of scurrying rats. Infestations have soared to 618 a day nationwide – and one area of London has seen its rat population explode with a whopping 90% increase. Many other UK cities are also suffering rampant pest problems with a total of 225,430 residential rat infestations dealt with by local authorities last year. It marks a significant 12% rise in call outs since 2020, when there were 201,871 – the equivalent of 552 a day. The figures were revealed after insurance company Direct Line submitted a freedom of information request to every authority in Britain earlier this year and 181 responded with usable data. An estimated £36million was spent on pest control visits to homes, the insurer found, with each council shelling out, on average, £101,044. Research showed that Swansea, Wales, was the most rat-ridden place in the UK with a total of 16,767 infestations in 2022, marking an 8% increase on the year before. Second on the list was Southwark with 16,664, but perhaps more alarmingly, the south London borough suffered an astonishing 90% rise in recorded infestations. Other notable increases in the number of infestations were Sunderland with 85% and Glasgow with 31%.

The Neuralink implant company wants to help restore vision and mobility to people by linking brains to computers. It says it does not have immediate plans to start recruiting participants. Mr Musk’s previous ambitions to begin tests came to nothing. The FDA said it acknowledged Neuralink’s announcement. An earlier bid by Neuralink to win FDA approval was rejected on safety grounds, according to a report in March by the Reuters news agency that cited multiple current and former employees. Neuralink hopes to use its microchips to treat conditions such as paralysis and blindness, and to help certain disabled people use computers and mobile technology. The chips – which have been tested in monkeys – are designed to interpret signals produced in the brain and relay information to devices via Bluetooth. Experts have cautioned that Neuralink’s brain implants will require extensive testing to overcome technical and ethical challenges if they are to become widely available.

I have no aversion to it or to most of its instruments. 1 have objected, both in the past and recently, to a few of its policies . . . but in general my chief difference of opinion is that it wishes to remain unknown, and I believe its role in history is significant enough to be known.
