Trump’s tariffs. Economic crash and war? Chief Secretary to the Treasury Darren Jones is preparing to make big cuts to departmental budgets as part of the June spending review. Downing Street sources say a reshuffle is planned in the fallout. High stakes for Darren… As ever with Labour figures their thinking is baked in during union activity. Jones’ is interesting… The treasury secretary served as official delegate for Unite South West Young Members back in 2011 and served on its executive, during which he filmed himself at the March for Alternative protests against Osborne’s budget cuts. Co-conspirators may remember that protest descended into violence with protestors “on the rampage, smashing windows and attacking property around Oxford Street” while battling riot police – though Jones was not involved in any violence. He described the large-scale public sector strikes that year as “brilliant.” How things change… At the same time Jones’ Unite executive sent a delegate to Cuba on a “solidarity trip” to stay in a “camp with comrades from every corner of the globe.” The conclusion Jones’ group officially drew was that “the very existence of the Cuban state, organized to a broad extent around socialist principles, offers confirmation that there can be alternatives to capitalism.” Darren’s current superior has a framed picture of a Soviet asset above her desk… Jones also wrote in the Advocate Socialist magazine in February of that year that private schools shouldn’t exist: “I fail to understand how anyone can see education and health as anything but core provision of the state and how others fail to see that, in these arenas, there is no room for shareholder profit and the harsh realities of the market.“ When it comes to immigration the chief secretary praised the courts for blocking Theresa May’s attempt to impose a temporary cap on non-EU immigrants – he said he “loves a good bit of judicial intervention” over that one. Meanwhile Jones wrote in the Plymouth Herald that all Brits “have an inbuilt sense of grandeur following our imperial past and that, with our current Government’s aversion to the European project, a tone of nationalism rests upon us all.” Not much funding for stopping the small boats in the spending review then… Jones is in charge of public spending for the entire UK which is 44% of the country’s GDP. France, UK preparing military intervention in Odessa — Foreign Ministry Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova dismissed the proposed “coalition of the willing” as nothing more than “a meme” MOSCOW, April 9. /TASS/. Paris and London are finalizing arrangements for a military intervention in Odessa, with talks occurring during a meeting of Western chiefs of general staff in Kiev, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a briefing. Zakharova revealed that Ukrainian, British, and French military officials met in Kiev on April 4-5 to develop operational plans for what they referred to as a “multinational peacekeeping contingent” in Ukraine. “In reality, these discussions were focused on preparations for Franco-British military operations targeting Ukraine’s Black Sea ports, particularly Odessa,” the diplomat emphasized. Furthermore, the spokeswoman dismissed the proposed “coalition of the willing” as nothing more than “a meme.” These Kiev discussions followed earlier talks during a March 27 summit in Paris, where participants from the so-called coalition deliberated on post-conflict security guarantees for Ukraine, including potential military deployments. Notably absent from both meetings was the United States, whose support, according to media reports, is seen as essential by some potential contributors to any peacekeeping mission. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned on March 12 that Moscow would regard any NATO troop presence in Ukraine, irrespective of designation or scale, as an unacceptable threat to Russian security.
Oli Fletcher of Farming Explained video blog – Lady Balfour the Fascist founder… History of Organic Farming. Episode 21 – The Organic Movement. The rise of European Fascism inspired the British aristocracy to develop an ultra-conservative revolutionary movement intended to restore feudalism and return the aristocracy to their former position as the ‘ruling class’. William Sanderson established a racist, misogynistic critique of industrial society. Gerard Wallop, Viscount Lymington and later 9th Earl Portsmouth put his significant wealth behind the idea, giving rise to the English Mistery. The Mistery attempted to hijack the conservative party and install Lord Lloyd as a dictator. Upon failure, Lymington founds the English Array and Lady Eve Balfour’s estate becomes the Haughley Experiment, to defend their blood-and-soil ideology from scientific critique. Rolf Gardiner leads Kinship in Husbandry during the war, while Jorian Jenks is temporarily interned for being a threat to national security. After the war they found the Soil Association, which included Jenks and Gardiner who corresponded with Nazi Food and Agriculture Minister Richard Walter Darre after. The effects of this are discussed – the Sustainable Farming Incentive, the Land Recovery Schemes etc. We take a look at the Soil Association’s selective account of its own history, its focus on ‘Lady Eve’, and the claims of its supporters on BBC Radio 4’s ‘Great Lives’. Sarah Langford, author of ‘Rooted’, and Patrick Holden, former director of the Association, both speak very fondly about Lady Balfour while continuously dodging questions about why she wasn’t taken seriously in her lifetime. And we follow Lymington as he abandons his soil in favour of new ‘servants’ in British Kenya. Jenks concluded in 1945 that to counter industrialised farming he would join forces with the farmer Lady Eve Balfour, who herself had been mightily inspired by Gardiner’s experiments with organics. Together they co-founded the Soil Association. Jenks went on to become the lead theorist in the organic movement, writing a number of books on soil health and nutrition and becoming editor of Mother Earth, the Soil Association’s in-house magazine, a role he held until his death in 1963. The Soil Association today remains proud of Balfour and her organic farming trials at New Bells Farm in Suffolk, as well as her radicalism, sexuality and opposition to the Church tithe taxes then levied on farmers (a cause that was taken up by Mosley’s blackshirts who “protected” a number of East Anglian farms in the 1930s from the bailiffs authorised to extract payments to the Church). Jenks and Gardiner meanwhile have been posthumously cancelled by the Soil Association, their roles as the practical trailblazers, lead theorists and polemicists for organic farming expunged from the record. Away from farming, Britain’s Green fascists heartily promoted the physical and spiritual benefits of connecting with nature. Mosley found this focus all a bit wishy washy for his masculine brand of politics. Indeed, the primary reason why Rolf Gardiner began to distance himself from the BUF was due to his belief that Mosley failed to go far enough in emphasising rural social issues. Gardiner’s and Williamson’s belief in the power of nature to heal mankind stemmed in part from their shared interest in the philosophy of Dr Rudolf Steiner. In particular they advocated the importance of exposing the young to wildlife and rural life, both in their education and free time. The spiritual outdoorsiness of the Steiner school model is advocated by the UK Green Party today, its sometime schools spokesperson, Samantha Pancheri, stating Steiner schools are “broadly compatible” with their own education policies that shun the formality and Ofsted-assessed rigidity preferred by mainstream parties.

MP Dan Norris arrested on suspicion of child sex offences and rape – MP Dan Norris has been arrested on suspicion of rape, child sex offences, child abduction and misconduct in a public office. The Labour Party says it “immediately suspended” the MP for North East Somerset and Hanham after being made aware of his arrest. Avon and Somerset Police confirmed that a man in his 60s was arrested on Friday and released on conditional bail. BBC News has contacted Norris for comment. Norris, 65, was elected as the MP for North East Somerset and Hanham in 2024, defeating the Conservative MP Jacob Rees-Mogg. He had previously been in Parliament from 1997 to 2010 representing the seat of Wansdyke. The MP was a junior minister under Gordon Brown and was an assistant whip under Tony Blair. Norris has also served as the Mayor of the West of England since 2021 but is due to step down ahead of May’s local elections. According to the West of England Combined Authority website, Norris previously worked as an NSPCC-trained child protection officer. In a statement, Avon and Somerset Police said: “In December 2024, we received a referral from another police force relating to alleged non-recent child sex offences having been committed against a girl. “Most of the offences are alleged to have occurred in the 2000s but we’re also investigating an alleged offence of rape from the 2020s. “An investigation, led by officers within Operation Bluestone, our dedicated rape and serious sexual assault investigation team, remains ongoing and at an early stage. “The victim is being supported and given access to any specialist help or support she needs. “A man, aged in his 60s, was arrested on Friday (April 4) on suspicion of sexual offences against a girl (under the Sexual Offences Act 1956), rape (under the Sexual Offences Act 2003), child abduction and misconduct in a public office. “He’s been released on conditional bail for enquiries to continue.” A Labour Party spokesperson said on Saturday: “Dan Norris MP was immediately suspended by the Labour Party upon being informed of his arrest. “We cannot comment further while the police investigation is ongoing.” The suspension means Mr Norris, the MP for North East Somerset and Hanham, is also understood to have had the party whip suspended, meaning he is not able to sit as a Labour MP in the Commons.

Did Lloyds Bank Kill My Business – [iPlayer] BBC Panorama 07Apr25 For 15 years, reporter Steve Brodie has been following the cases of dozens of entrepreneurs who say Lloyds Bank failed their businesses and ruined their lives. Some Lloyds customers have made criminal complaints to the police about their former bank, but none have resulted in a full investigation. Lloyds says it has always worked to support business customers who got into difficulties following the financial crash. Now Panorama reveals new documents from inside the bank as well as whistleblower evidence which raises serious questions about the way the bank treated some of its customers. Lloyds accused of failing small firms as it cut lending Steve Brodie, Celia Watson, Emily Buchanan and Mitchell Labiak Lloyds Bank business customers and whistleblowers have accused it of failing small firms as it tried to reduce lending after the financial crash of 2008. Business owners who borrowed from Lloyds around that time have told the BBC their firms collapsed after the bank introduced them to its Business Support Unit (BSU), intended for clients it considered were struggling. A whistleblower told Panorama there was a “pattern” of “pigeonholing” small businesses as “distressed” when they were “salvageable”. Lloyds said it “categorically denied” the allegations and its BSU “supported many thousands of customers”. During the banking crisis of 2008, the government bailed out banks to save them from collapse, including Lloyds which got £20bn of taxpayers’ cash. Then Prime Minister Gordon Brown said as a condition of the bailout banks must protect lending to small and medium sized businesses. But over 15 years, the BBC has heard allegations that Lloyds’ BSU failed small firms. James Ducker, who sold financial products to businesses for Lloyds in 2009, said “the approach to lending became do not lend. Beyond that, get as much money back that we’ve lent as possible.” He said customers in the BSU were “easy pickings”. A whistleblower who worked for a consultancy firm brought in by Lloyds to advise small businesses in the BSU told BBC Panorama that in their experience the companies described by the bank as distressed “probably weren’t distressed, they were salvageable. I believe there was a pattern. There’s no other way to put it.” Wishing to remain anonymous, the whistleblower accused the bank of “planning the administration of these entities in advance of reports that were produced. The business plan was completely ignored. They weren’t interested in saving the company.”

Adam Bolton, Times Radio – former Tory MP Sir Ivan Lawrence on not filibustering about dangers of fluoride in water. Joy Warren – Fluoride Free Alliance. The longest 20th Century House of Commons speech was made by Conservative MP Sir Ivan Lawrence, who spoke for four hours 23 minutes against the Fluoridation Bill in 1985. Sir Ivan, a barrister, was an experienced enough public speaker to keep extemporising on the topic, although his efforts were not enough to prevent the motion becoming law. “I don’t think I even had any water with me,” he recalls. “It was the adrenaline that kept me going. “Unfortunately, everyone thought this was a great wheeze. “There were various people interrupting me – ‘Is my right honourable friend aware that he’s promised me a lift home tonight?’ and so on.” A friend later told Sir Ivan he kept Hansard’s transcript of the debate by his bed to help him get to sleep at night. FLUORIDATION IS A BAD MEDICAL PRACTICE 1) FLUORIDE IS THE ONLY CHEMICAL ADDED TO WATER FOR THE PURPOSE OF MEDICAL TREATMENT In pharmaceutical medicines which possess marketing authorisations, fluoride is classified as a drug when used to prevent or mitigate disease. As a matter of basic logic, adding fluoride to water for the sole purpose of preventing tooth decay (a non-waterborne disease) is a form of medical treatment. This converts potable drinking water into a prophylactic medicine. All other water treatment chemicals are added to improve the water’s quality or safety, which fluoride does not do. Three Courts of Law since 1958 have ruled that fluoridated water is a medicine. (The Supreme Court of Canada, 1958; Scotland, 1983; The Supreme Court of New Zealand, 2018). In England, a piece of Primary Law, the Medicines Act 1968 s.130, defines a medicine and although fluoridated water is not specifically mentioned, the definition of a medicine in the Act matches the physical state and intention of the compound created when an active substance (fluoride) is added to a carrier (drinking water). Shaw (2012) writes: “Water fluoridation is currently permitted [in England and Wales] by the Water Act 2003, but this appears to contradict legislation and regulations governing food and healthcare in the UK and the EU. It is concluded that the status quo rests on the legal fiction that fluoridated water does not constitute a medication.”

However the best part for me was the description of how Yeltsin tried to convert Russia into a western style capitalist economy with predictably disastrous results for the majority of ordinary Russians. Some other good stuff I liked were the stories of Russians turning up at London estate agencies and car showrooms with suitcases stuffed full of money trying to buy property and cars. Amazingly the US government has indicated that they don’t want these people but the British government are happy to have them here because they are spending their money here, Can’t help but feel that most ordinary Russians would have been better off under the old communist regime.

Berezovsky was living and looking forward to his return to Russia. Of course, he was hoping for indulgence. ‘Boris was killed only because he possessed information which he was going to share with Putin. ‘I am absolutely sure that Boris had video and audio evidence about certain oligarchs who offered to organise a coup in the country, promising him to be seen as being at the head of the attack. ‘Berezovsky planned to come back to his motherland with this sensational material. ‘You understand it now: those people he had gathered compromising materials for, considered him to be a serious threat.’….

Litvinenko’s father doesn’t think Putin killed his son. Litvinenko’s father: ‘The British duped me – Putin did NOT kill my son’ (2012) – Valter Litvinenko (right) now realizes he was completely duped by the British government and the Russian mafia The father of late Russian security officer Aleksandr Litvinenko says he pursued a smear campaign against the Russian government out of grief, but changed his mind after Aleksandr’s widow revealed his son had been working for British intelligence. After his son died in London from radioactive polonium poisoning in November 2006, Walter Litvinenko was among those who accused Russia of assassinating Aleksandr. But he changed his attitude after his son’s widow Marina revealed that he had been working for British intelligence. “If I knew back then that my son worked for the MI6, I would not speculate about his death. It would be none of my business. Although I am not 100 per cent sure he did work for them,” he said in an interview with RT. He added that if it was true and Aleksandr, once a security officer with the Russian special service FSB, had defected to British intelligence, the Russians may have had a right to kill him as a traitor. “He might as well have been killed by Russian secret services. They had a right to do it because traitors are to be killed,” he said. “Back then I was convinced he was not a traitor but I am not so sure now, so I won’t draw any conclusions.” He calls his son a victim of a grand spy game. But he doubts that Andrey Lugovoy, who British police have named their chief suspect, had a hand in his death or acted as a government agent. “The FSB wouldn’t send some dumbhead to spill polonium on himself, to leave traces all over my son. It appears that someone left traces of polonium on Lugovoy intentionally. Polonium traces were found at the stadium, on the road and even on a plane. It’s strange to think that Lugovoy would be such an idiot.” Walter Litvinenko authored a number of articles and gave several interviews in which he accused the Kremlin of many crimes, including killing his son. “I was guided only by anger over my son’s death at the time. The grizzly death of Aleksandr Litvinenko became a major scandal which soured relations between Russia and Britain for several years. Russia refused to extradite Lugovoy for a trial in London and Britain refused to accept a trial on Russian soil. Some Western media accused Moscow of assassinating Litvinenko for his anti-Putin publications. British justice so far confirmed that the cause of Litvinenko’s death was polonium poisoning, but seems no nearer to uncovering how it happened or who, if anyone, is to blame.

Trump, hosting Netanyahu, urges end to Gaza war, thinks that is not ‘too distant’ WASHINGTON, April 7 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday he would like the war in Gaza to stop and thinks that will happen relatively soon, as he hosted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House. Asked if he would deliver on his election campaign promise to end the war in Gaza, Trump said: “I’d like to see the war stop, and I think the war will stop at some point, that won’t be in the too-distant future.” Israel launched the war after Hamas-led fighters attacked southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing some 1,200 people and taking 251 hostage, according to Israeli tallies. Since then, Israel has so far killed more than 50,000 Palestinians, according to local health authorities. Trump said work was ongoing to free hostages held by Hamas, but said securing the release of all the hostages was “a long process.” Trump and Netanyahu spoke to reporters in the Oval Office after their meeting. Following the January ceasefire that saw some hostages released, Netanyahu said, Israel was working on “another deal we hope will succeed.” “We’re committed to getting all the hostages out, but also eliminating the evil tyranny of Hamas in Gaza and enabling the people of Gaza to freely make a choice to go wherever they want,” he said. Netanyahu said he had also discussed with Trump the U.S. president’s “bold vision” for the future of Gaza, a reference to a proposal for the U.S. to take over the enclave that Trump put forward multiple times during the opening weeks of his administration. Trump’s plan has been globally condemned as a proposal for ethnic cleansing. Trump on Monday said having “a peace force like the United States there controlling and owning the Gaza Strip would be a good thing” and once again suggested that Palestinians from Gaza could be moved to different countries.

How Private Banking Replaced Public Money By Michael Hudson Tuesday, April 8, 2025 This article explores the historical shift of money from a public utility to a tool of private profit, tracing its roots from ancient civilizations to modern financial systems. It examines how governments once controlled money to serve societal needs but lost that power to private banks, especially after the rise of neoliberalism. Case studies like Japan show the dangers of debt-driven economies, while China’s public debt model offers contrast. The piece also revisits America’s original protectionist strategies—focused on public infrastructure and high wages—versus today’s distorted policies that favor monopolies, rentier wealth, and financial elites. It advocates for rethinking finance as public service. Michael Hudson: The problem is not government debt, it’s private debt. People who say that government debt is the problem are people who want to get rid of the government and take it over themselves. What gives money its value? Money is basically a public utility. Prior to Western civilization, money was always kept in the public sector, in the palace sector, and that’s because what gives money its value is that governments accept it for paying taxes. Money has always been a product of the government, but in the late 19th century, banking began to be thoroughly privatized and taken out of the hands of any government that controlled it. The banks did two strategies. One was, if you were a global self-country, one of the new republics that got independent in the 19th century, they couldn’t pay their debts, and so England and France would impose national monetary commissions to take control of the fiscal policy of governments. So governments lost their ability to tax and make policy to the foreign financial sector. In the United States, the United States did not have a foreign debt, but the banks replaced the treasury with the Federal Reserve and the central bank. And the purpose of central banks today in every country is to take control of tax policy, monetary policy and credit creation in the hands of the commercial banks, not in the hands of the government. Well, the advantage of having the government as the creditor, as it was in Mesopotamia, in the Bronze Age, is that if most debts were owed to the palace, the palace ruler could cancel the debts and write them down. But if you have a government without a private sector, then you can’t write it down. Look at what happened in Japan. You mentioned Japan. Japan kept lending more and more money to finance the purchase of real estate. And the real estate, housing or an office building, is worth however much a bank would lend to buy it. And the Japanese banks lent so much money that just the real estate around the palace area, the Ginza district, was worth more than the entire state of California. Well, after the Plaza Accord and Japan was obliged to raise its exchange rate, Japan adopted America’s neoliberal policy and left all of these debts in place. And so Japan entered a permanent depression by about 1990 that it’s never been able to escape from. So Japan is an example of what happens to a country that basically is run to serve the interests of private sector bankers. In China right now, China has the ability to write down the debts because there’s not going to be a domestic oligarchy that’s going to overthrow it because the debts are not owed to private sector banks, they’re owed to the government. And the government can write down debts that ultimately are owed to itself. You’d also be writing down debts that are owed to a lot of people who borrowed money to create banks to relend. You’d wipe out the creditor class…..
