Spy cops scandal. Radio Nick spy cop. Woman tells spycops inquiry of ‘deep mistrust’ of police after relationship with undercover officer Ellie, who now lives in Australia, tells policing inquiry she was deceived by officer infiltrating animal rights groups A woman has told a public inquiry in London that she was left devastated and deeply mistrustful of police after an undercover officer deceived her into an intimate relationship at a young age. The woman, known only as Ellie, who now lives in Australia and is a dual national, told the undercover policing inquiry on Thursday that she had a year-long relationship with James Thomson while he concealed his real identity from her. For 16 years after the sexual relationship ended in 2002, Thomson maintained close relations with her, regularly emailing her and kissing her when they met up. He sent five emails to her asking her to send photographs of her in lingerie but she refused. He finally her told her the truth in 2018. On one occasion, in 2015, he had sex with her. This occurred a year after the spycops inquiry had been commissioned by the UK government to scrutinise allegations of misconduct by undercover officers who infiltrated political movements. One of the key issues in front of the inquiry is how for decades the undercover officers have regularly formed sexual relationships with women without disclosing that they had adopted fake personas and had been sent to spy on political activists. Thomson, who infiltrated animal rights campaigners between 1997 and 2002, is set to be questioned next month by the inquiry, which has said there were “very many troubling aspects” to his deployment. Earlier this month, David Barr, the inquiry’s chief barrister, said Thomson “has, on his own admission, told many lies to date. He has lied not only to those he mixed with while deployed but also to his managers and to the inquiry.” Among the allegations he will face are that he fabricated claims that an animal rights activist was seeking a gun to take revenge on a political opponent, developed a second fake identity without the authorisation of his Metropolitan police superiors, and broke the law while obtaining multiple identity documents. Thomson was forced to admit to the inquiry that he had deceived two women into sexual relationships while undercover after initially denying this.

Caerphilly election – Plaid Cymru win, Reform come second. Russia post the collapse of communism – Putin. Turnout just over 50% Vote share in 2021 to 2025. Reform at the top with 34.2, Plaid Cymru on second with 19, Lib Dem third with -1.2, Conservative fourth with -15.3 and Labour last with -34.9. The turnout for the by-election was just over 50% – higher than 2021’s 44% in Caerphilly. The national average for a Senedd vote has never been over 50%. Reform won only 495 votes four years ago but ended in a two horse race with Plaid Cymru in Thursday’s poll, coming second with 36% of the vote. Despite the result Reform candidate Llyr Powell said he thought Reform will form the next Welsh government. Starmer ‘deeply disappointed’ at Caerphilly by-election defeat Labour suffered its first parliamentary defeat in Caerphilly for 100 years as Plaid Cymru claimed victory in the Welsh Parliament by-election. Nigel Farage’s Reform pledged to “throw everything” at the campaign but its candidate, Llyr Powell, could only finish second to Plaid’s Lindsay Whittle, who took 47% of the vote with a majority of 3,848. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said he was “deeply disappointed” at the loss, adding: “We clearly need to do much more.” The result saw a swing of 27% from Labour, which has held the seat in Westminster since the 1920s and in the Senedd since it began at the turn of the century. Turnout was just over 50% – higher than 2021’s 44% in Caerphilly – compared to the national average for a Senedd vote which has never been over 50%. Reform won only 495 votes four years ago but found itself in a battle with Plaid Cymru, coming second with 36% of the vote. Labour’s Richard Tunnicliffe won just 11% of the vote and came third. The constituency was visited by a series of senior figures from the party in the last few days, including Farage, who campaigned in Caerphilly on Thursday. Despite the result Llyr Powell said he thought Reform would form the next Welsh government. “We’ve got more people turning out to vote now when they’ve got a party they believe in.” On Friday, Farage predicted May’s Senedd election would be a “two-horse race between Reform UK and Plaid Cymru”. “The total collapse of the Labour vote to Plaid was to a party that people know well and to a popular local politician,” he wrote on social media. Llyr Powell was Reform’s candidate for the by-election and finished second Labour had held Caerphilly since the National Assembly, as the Welsh Parliament – or Senedd – was then called, opened in 1999. The result leaves the party two seats short of a majority, making it harder for it to govern ahead of a crucial vote on its budget in January.

Order of the Garter The highest order of knights in Great Britain, [in Europe actually, ed.] founded by king Edward III in 1350. Links to the centuries-old witch cult were uncovered by British anthropologist Margaret A. Murray. Edward conceived the Order in 1344 and formally created it on St. George’s Day, April 23, 1350, in honour of the Holy Trinity, the Virgin Mary, St. Edward the Confessor and St. George, the patron saint of England. The Order is sometimes called The Order of St. George. According to legend, the Order resulted from an episode at court. While the king danced with the Countess of Salisbury, her garter fell to the floor. The king swooped it up and placed it on his own leg, saying, “Honi soit qui mal y pense” (“Shame on him who thinks evil of it”). The remark became the Order’s motto. The official emblem was a dark blue ribbon edged in gold, bearing the motto in gold letters; this ribbon was worn below the left knee. The Order originally numbered 26: 12 knights led by Edward, plus 12 knights led by the Prince of Wales. Beginning in 1786 the Order was opened to admit others. In modern times, the order has a dean and 12 canons. In The Witch-cult in Western Europe (1921), Murray reads a great deal of significance into the numbers of the Order. The original groups of 13—12 plus a leader—equate with the supposedly traditional number in a witches’ Coven. thIrteen is still represented in the modern structure: a dean plus 12 canons. Murray also points out that Edward’s mantle, as Chief of the Order, bore 168 garters. He wore another garter on his leg, and the total of 169 equals 13 times 13. According to modern witch lore, garters were worn as a secret means of identification. Gerald B. Gardner, in Witchcraft Today (1954), suggested that the countess of Salisbury was a witch and that Edward immediately recognized her dropped garter as her secret identification and gallantly saved her from being exposed and brought to trial. Garters, however, were in fashion at the time, and it was not unusual for ladies of the court to be wearing them. Gardner further speculated that a Black Book, containing the Order’s original constitution, was spirited away after Edward’s death in 1377. Most likely, the purpose of the Order of the Garter was nothing more than what Edward publicly intended it to be: purely one of chivalry. Virginia Guiffre – book comes out after she dies. Her Tweet where she says she’s not suicidal and many important people want her dead. Jeffrey Epstein victim Virginia Giuffre — who killed herself at her Australian home — once declared, ‘In no way, shape or form am I suicidal’ Virginia Giuffre — who is thought to have killed herself at her home in Western Australia — once sternly warned she would never commit suicide. The Jeffrey Epstein victim turned whistleblower made the statement in a post on X in 2019, replying to another user who claimed the “F.B.I. will kill her to protect the ultra rich and well connected.” “I am making it publicly known that in no way, shape or form am I suicidal,” she wrote. “I have made this known to my therapist and GP – If something happens to me – in the sake of my family do not let this go away and help me to protect them. Too many evil people want to see me [quieted].” The old tweet was resurfaced on X and shared by well-known conservatives including including House Republicans Nancy Mace and Marjorie Taylor Greene. Rep. Mace shared the screenshot of Giuffre’s old tweet, saying “This gave me goosebumps.” Rep. Taylor Green posted a photo of Giuffre with Prince Andrew, who she also accused of sex trafficking, with the words, “The truth needs to come out more matter who is responsible (sic.)” “She was a very nice person who had a lot of bad luck,” he said sadly, declining to give further detail before adding the family is taking her death hard. The advocate’s suicide came just weeks after she made headlines for saying she had “four days to live” following a collision with a bus.

Grooming scandal – Alexis Jay Inquiry – no one guilty. PMQs four victims have resigned from grooming scandal new Inquiry. Jess Phillips to go? Grooming gang survivors call on ‘Safeguarding Child Abusers’ Minister Jess Phillips to ‘step down’ Calls have been made for Jess Phillips to ‘step down’ from her role as safeguarding minister after three survivors on her Grooming Gang Panel sensationally quit yesterday. When Fiona Goddard was a teenager, she was placed in care in Bradford. She told Channel 4 News that she was exploited, abused by adult men and fell pregnant at 15. The men have been prosecuted, but she told Channel 4 News she still doesn’t know why it was allowed to happen. Along with other grooming survivors, she said that she felt taking part in the inquiry would help her uncover the truth, institutional failures and cover-ups. But on Tuesday Ms Goddard quit the inquiry. “But I do not feel like the current direction of the inquiry is going to get to the truth. I’ve had multiple concerns, it wasn’t just one incident that led me to this decision.” Ms Goddard alleges that the inquiry was being watered down, by widening the scope to include other areas of sexual abuse or child sexual exploitation. Labour MP Jess Phillips, who heads up the inquiry, denied in parliament on Tuesday, allegations of intentional delay, lack of interest or widening of its scope and dilution. In response to Phillips’ announcement, Fiona said the safeguarding minister “needs to step down.” Fiona pointed to text and email exchanges that she’s recently released between herself and Phillips. In them, she revealed that she “confronted Jess and asked her about widening the scope” of the inquiry. Channel 4 News asked for a government response to Fiona’s allegations, but no one was available to comment. Instead Labour MP for Bolsover, Natalie Fleet spoke to the programme. She’s also a survivor of grooming and a member of the Women and Equalities Committee. After listening to Fiona’s interview, Fleet was asked by Channel 4 News presenter Ciaran Jenkins what she made of Fiona Goddard’s criticism of the government. “I don’t blame her for not trusting institutions,” she said. “I don´t trust institutions either.” In terms of accusations of a cover-up, Fleet responded saying “no way, Jess Phillips would never do that.” While one survivor remains on the inquiry, Fiona Goddard said that she believes survivors were never at the heart of it. “It was a box-ticking exercise,” she said. “We have been failed, over and over again.”

Mark Saunders from Despite TV on how he made award-winning collaborative films in London. Mark Saunders, who has died aged 68, was an independent film-maker, engaged in participatory media practices since the early 1980s. In 1982 he founded the media co-operative Despite TV and in 1990 Spectacle Productions, a TV production company specialising in documentary and community-led investigative journalism on topics such as the struggle for housing, urban development, human rights and social justice. Despite TV emerged after the creation of Channel 4, which gave professional film-making equipment to community groups. Making use of this new, more accessible video technology, Despite TV produced regular video magazines on local London issues, and longer films focusing on subjects such as the Wapping dispute (Despite the Sun, 1986), the London Docklands Development Corporation’s takeover of the old docks (Despite the City, 1988) and the poll tax riots (The Battle of Trafalgar, 1990, broadcast on Channel 4). These highlight Mark’s most innovative technique – a community group video diary, based around an event, forensically analysed and edited to draw out deeper context. Combining interviews and footage from other sources, amateur film-makers trained by Mark captured a huge amount of data from every angle. Mark collaborated with communities, educational institutions, NGOs, local councils and cultural institutions, and gave participants the tools to speak for themselves. Interested in the effects of German reunification, he established the media collective Jakow Videocoop in 1991 in the former East German city of Rostock, to produce The Truth Lies in Rostock for Channel 4. From 1994, he worked with residents of Marsh Farm in Luton, on three films about the transformational power of community-centred activities, the third of which, Exodus from Babylon (1997), was broadcast on Channel 4. In 2000 Mark formed a video group on the Silwood estate in Rotherhithe, south London, which captured more than 350 hours of footage over 20 years. Some of the groups he established remained active for many years, thus allowing hundreds of participants from diverse backgrounds and of different ages to contribute. He had plans to develop an “active archive” of his work and a home is being sought for his collection. Born in Plaistow, east London, to Thomas Saunders, an architect, and Betty McCrea (nee Mermod), Mark grew up in Upminster and went to Hornchurch grammar school. He graduated with a degree in film, television and photography from the London College of Printing, and then a master’s in screenwriting from the University of the Arts London.

Green Council of Bristol decide bailiffs won’t be sent to those on benefits. Poorest Bristol residents in debt to council will no longer face bailiffs One bill-payer said she was “living in fear” for months after bailiffs turned up Thousands of Bristol’s poorest households will no longer be targeted by bailiffs for debt to the city council, in a major victory for campaign group ACORN. Council leader Cllr Tony Dyer has confirmed that the authority will stop sending enforcement agents to vulnerable people who are unable to pay. These include residents on income-related benefits, working people on low pay, and those who have lost jobs, significant hours of employment or tax credits. Community union ACORN has hailed it as a huge triumph after high-profile protests prompted talks with Cllr Dyer, who has agreed to stop the use of bailiffs to collect any form of council debt from people least able to afford it. The campaign group said an estimated 36 per cent of Bristolians were on benefits and that, with low-income households added, many more than one in three people in the city will be protected from bailiff visits and repossessions. ACORN Bristol branch secretary Wesley said: “This victory has been a long time coming. “It’s taken the hard work of hundreds of low-income ACORN members and several public demonstrations to win a firm commitment from council leader Tony Dyer. “All Bristolians on benefits – that’s a third of Bristolians – will be able to breathe easier knowing bailiffs won’t be knocking at their doors. “This commitment is substantial, and we look forward to working with the council to put it into practice and go even further in slashing the use of bailiffs. “The days of intimidation and fear are numbered – dignity over debt has won.” Cllr Dyer (Green, Southville) said: “I support ACORN’s ask for the government to reinstate a centrally funded council tax benefit and to explore fairer alternatives to council tax, which the Green Party has long called for. “As a council, we welcome government’s commitment to ensuring a fairer approach to debt collection and would like to see local crisis funding fully restored to ensure that there is a viable support alternative to debt enforcement. “In the meantime, we are already identifying vulnerable debtors on our system so we can stop sending bailiffs to those debtors who are unable to pay. “This would almost certainly include those on income-related benefits, including working people on low incomes. “It also includes people who are identified as temporarily vulnerable when their income has significantly dropped, such as where they have lost work or material working hours, welfare benefits and tax credits. “As a local authority, we have a statutory duty to collect council tax to fund essential public services such as education, social care, waste collection, and emergency response. “We take this responsibility seriously and are committed to following a fair and proportionate recovery and enforcement process which considers vulnerabilities.” ACORN launched its campaign against Bristol City Council’s use of bailiffs in October 2024 and confronted Cllr Dyer on his way to give a talk at M Shed months later. Then in May this year, dozens of the union’s members marched on City Hall led by a knight in full medieval armour, announcing their demands from a scroll and placing ‘Wanted’ posters on the front doors. That was despite the authority’s policy stating it would follow a “fair and proportionate recovery and enforcement process”, taking into account vulnerability and the ability to pay. ACORN members claimed they had been unfairly intimidated and bullied by debt enforcers. One of them, Sharon, said: “For months, bailiff action completely wrecked my life – I was living in fear, struggling to breathe under the pressure, and choosing between rent, food, and heat. “When no one else would listen, ACORN stood by me.

Beast Tech – planned digital ID. Clarence Wilcock, dry cleaner, caused the end of ID after WW2. When the British fought off ID cards Compulsory ID cards are nothing new in the UK. They were issued to all British civilians during World War II. That is until one ordinary man said no. Clarence Willcock, a 54-year-old dry cleaner from suburban north London, must rank as one of the unlikeliest Davids ever to take on a Goliath. Mr Willcock was stopped on December 7 1950 while driving his car along Ballard’s Lane by uniformed police constable Harold Muckle, who demanded to see the motorist’s identity card. ID cards had to be carried by everyone over 16 Mr Willcock refused. Pc Muckle told him to produce the compulsory card at the local station with 48 hours. “I will not produce it at any police station,” Mr Willcock replied. With this act of defiance, Mr Willcock brought crashing down a giant bureaucracy which had, since the outbreak of World War II in 1939, forced an identity card on every civilian in the UK – man, woman and child. When Willcock v Muckle eventually reached the High Court in 1951, Lord Chief Justice Goddard said the continuation of the wartime ID card scheme was an “annoyance” to much of the public and “tended to turn law-abiding subjects into law breakers”. Mr Willcock was sent on his way. With Home Secretary David Blunkett this week stressing the advantages of reintroducing a compulsory identification card, Lord Goddard’s judgement that the wartime system was a cause of public “resentment” may again be cited by critics of the idea. But, Mr Willcock aside, were wartime ID cards so very unpopular? “I don’t think anybody had any objections,” says Geoffrey Styles, who was issued with his card as a schoolboy in 1939. “There was a great fear of invasion. I remember my father was decorating the house and my mother asked why he was bothering: ‘The Germans will be here soon’.” The ID cards – few of which contained a photograph of the holder – were most commonly used in conjunction with a ration card, so that civilians could claim their allowances of food and other goods. “It was rationing that people minded more that the ID cards. I never felt that I was being monitored or that Big Brother was watching me,” says Mr Styles. He also says that in his tight-knit east London community, everybody knew everybody else, making the carrying of ID cards slightly redundant. “My ID card eventually went into a drawer. I can’t ever remember being asked to show it.” Former government minister Tony Benn – a critic of Mr Blunkett’s new ID card plans – agrees that the wartime “atmosphere” made the public more accepting of the curtailing of civil liberties. “During wartime it is a bit like living in a police state.” However, unlike modern ID cards which could, theoretically, carry electronic data the holder cannot themselves see or retrieve, Mr Benn says the wartime documents were “just a little bit of paper and very simple, carrying just your name and address”. The simplicity of these cards – while perhaps making them more palatable to those forced to carry them – was also a factor undermining the continued implementation of a national ID system. The cards were presumably a laughable hurdle to the forgers employed by the Nazis in Germany or blackmarketeers at home. Indeed, the failings of the ID system allowed many thousands of military deserters to roam the UK, according to a new book, An Underworld at War, by Donald Thomas. Geoffrey Styles was never asked to show his ID card However, it might not have been concerns about security shortcomings, civil liberties or Clarence Willcock which prompted Winston Churchill’s 1952 government to end ID cards. The system was expensive and difficult to administer, and offered few benefits. “Let us have the credit for ‘setting the people free’,” wrote one Treasury minister in 1952, though he was really gleefully looking forward to “the consequential staff economies”. The demise of the system was forecast while the fight against Hitler was still fierce. In October 1944, Registrar General Sir Earnest Holderness said that he did “not believe that public opinion will stand for the retention of [national registration] in its present form”. Sir Ernest reasoned that once law-abiding citizens no longer needed to provide details of their address to ensure their ration allowances, they would not bother to keep their ID cards up to date merely because the government asked them to. “In peace time, the records would probably have to be checked by some annual or periodical canvass,” he said, clearly not savouring such a task.

How post-structuralism successfully paralysed the left: Prof. Gabriel Rockhill, “The Global Theory Industry & Left Anti-Communism” A comprehensive lecture on the global theory industry, its intellectual history, and the material social forces shaping it, particularly emphasizing left anti-communism and its impact on critical theory. Prof. Rockhill traces their personal intellectual journey from an initial engagement with radical critical theory rooted in the Frankfurt School and French theory (structuralism and post-structuralism) to a materialist critique of these traditions and the broader apparatus of knowledge production under neoliberal capitalism. The central argument is that the dominant global theory industry promotes a generalized critical theory that cloaks conservative and anti-communist worldviews in radical discourse, limiting genuine revolutionary and anti-capitalist thought. Prof. Rockhill discusses the historical conditions that gave rise to this phenomenon, highlighting the role of US national security agencies (like the CIA) in shaping intellectual discourse during the Cold War through organizations such as the Congress for Cultural Freedom. The talk also addresses the challenges faced by scholars operating within the academy, which is deeply intertwined with capitalist and state power structures, limiting intellectual autonomy and reinforcing ideological boundaries. Prof. Rockhill advocates for a shift from idealist, subjectivist approaches to a materialist, objective framework that examines the institutional, economic, and political forces shaping knowledge production. Emphasizing solidarity, collective struggle, and engagement with actual socialist and anti-capitalist traditions, the lecture calls for a reinvigoration of Marxist and historical materialist analysis as tools for radical social transformation.

Sadiq Khan marked his 55th birthday in style, hosting a bash on the £268million superyacht moored in the heart of London, and owned by billionaire sports magnate Shahid Khan. The 122-metre luxury vessel, Kismet, was anchored near London Bridge when the Mayor of London joined other guests aboard for a private celebration hosted by his friend, the Pakistani-American businessman. Kismet, one of the most luxurious yachts in the world, boasts a helipad, onboard nightclub, full-service spa, and swimming pool. It was designed in Germany by Lürssen Yachts and is adorned with a sculpted jaguar on the bow, a nod to its owner’s Jacksonville Jaguars NFL team. Shahid Khan, 75, is worth an estimated $13.3billion (£10.9billion) and also owns Fulham Football Club, whose Craven Cottage stadium sits just along the River Thames A spokesperson for the Mayor said: “Sadiq attended a private event hosted by Shad, who is a friend,” and confirmed that any hospitality received will be transparently declared. The yacht is expected to remain moored near London Bridge, just a short stroll from the Mayor’s former City Hall base, nicknamed the “Glass Onion”, now under refurbishment following the office’s move downriver to The Crystal in Royal Victoria Dock. Our generation is running out of time to save the free internet built for us by our fathers,” said Durov in an X post on Thursday. “Once-free countries are introducing dystopian measures,” said Durov, referencing the European Union’s Chat Control proposal, digital IDs in the UK and new rules requiring online age checks to access social media in Australia. “What was once the promise of the free exchange of information is being turned into the ultimate tool of control.” “Germany is persecuting anyone who dares to criticize officials on the Internet. Privacy protections are a cornerstone of Bitcoin and the broader cryptocurrency industry. Bitcoin was created to operate pseudonymously, using addresses instead of names, and allowing peer-to-peer transactions without the involvement of banks, among other measures. Germany may have blocked the EU’s Chat Control EU lawmakers were set to vote on the Chat Control law next week, which critics argue undermines encrypted messaging and people’s right to privacy as it requires services such as Telegram, WhatsApp and Signal to allow regulators to screen messages before they are encrypted and sent. The legislation, however, has been dealt a heavy blow, with the head of Germany’s largest political party coming out in opposition. Germany, which holds 97 seats in the European Parliament, was expected to have the final say on whether it would pass. Bristol Beacon pays compensation to zoo campaigners after attempted cover-up Organisers lost thousands when their launch event was cancelled after the zoo boss intervened Bosses at the Bristol Beacon cancelled an event launching a campaign calling for Bristol Zoo to reopen, hours after private pressure from bosses at the zoo – and then tried to cover it up, Bristol Live can reveal. The council-owned concert and events venue ended up having to pay the organiser of the campaign, whose booking was cancelled at short notice, thousands of pounds in compensation. That money – more than £3,500 – was eventually paid to help with the costs incurred by organisers of the Save Bristol Zoo campaign in setting up and publicising the public meeting, that was cancelled just a week before it was scheduled at the end of April this year. The Beacon said it cancelled the event because it was ‘likely to cause significant reputational damage’ to both the Beacon and Bristol Zoo. But organiser Tom Jones said he suspected the zoo itself was involved in the decision to cancel. He asked whether the Beacon had been contacted by anyone at the zoo and had been told ‘we’re aware of the petition, nothing more’. He therefore made a ‘Subject Access Request’ about himself to the Beacon. He then also demanded compensation for the money he’d spent setting up the event. In the months that followed, the Beacon told Mr Jones he’d only get compensation if he dropped request for the Beacon’s internal emails, and only if he signed a ‘non-disclosure agreement’ confidentiality contract – which would have banned him from ever explaining why the event was cancelled. In the end Mr Jones refused, was awarded compensation and forced the release of emails, which revealed that Bristol Zoo chief executive Justin Morris had indeed emailed the Beacon’s chief executive just a few hours before the booking was cancelled, and that the Beacon’s leadership team agreed not to tell Mr Jones about that intervention.

Old Men at the Zoo, The – 5 x 55 minute episodes: A Tall Story | Godmanchester’s Plan | Exodus | Armageddon | The Year Of The Yeti Simon Carter (Stuart Wilson), the zoo’s newly-appointed young secretary, finds himself surrounded by fanatical old men whose answers to the impending crisis all ignore either morality or reality. The titular old men themselves are extremely well-played with Robert Morley as the deliciously wicked and politically manipulative press baron and zoo president, Lord Godmanchester; Andrew Cruickshank as curator of insects, Mr Sanderson; Richard Wordsworth as curator of birds, Mr Price; and Marius Goring as curator of reptiles, Emile Englander. Carter’s wife, Martha (Toria Fuller) returns from America where she has left their children for safety and the zookeepers make arrangements for war. Sanderson prepares butterflies to survive an atomic blast while Price plans to smash his aviary’s glass to release the birds. Meanwhile, the new director of the Zoo, Sir Robert Falcon (Robert Urquhart), is making plans for Empire Day, a grand Victorian spectacle and Carter is furious that Falcon is ignoring the threat of war. Lord Godmanchester calls Carter from Snowdonia (where he has retreated to prepare for a post-war devolved government) urging Carter to support the project as a means of raising national morale. At home, Martha has admitted to Carter that she slept with Falcon while she was abroad and has moved into the basement in preparation for an attack. Carter tells her that he will know when a war is imminent because the Home Office will order the destruction of dangerous animals. The next morning, soldiers arrive at the zoo to shoot the animals and a Home Office official calls Carter to tell him that missiles are on their way in 20 minutes….

Bailiff Free Britain! Today, 300 ACORN members from across England and Wales travelled to Leeds and shut down a conference that hosted some of Britain’s biggest bailiff firms. The bailiffs legged it straight away, so we hosted our own panel on our fight for a Bailiff Free Britain! We then moved onto Leeds City Hall and occupied the lobby there. After months of being ignored by the Chair of Leeds’ Strategy and Resource Board, Asghar Khan, we managed to secure a meeting to talk about our campaign and put our demands to him. This is the first national action in our Bailiff Free Britain campaign, but it won’t be the last. Hundreds of ACORN members shut down conference in bailiff day of action Hundreds of ACORN members from across England and Wales came together in Leeds this week for the first national day of action in our Bailiff Free Britain campaign. Over 300 members from branches across the country disrupted the annual conference of the Civil Court Users Association, one of the main events for bailiff and debt collection companies. The conference hosted representatives from some of Britain’s largest enforcement firms, but when ACORN arrived, they didn’t stick around for long. Members filled the building, hung banners from the balconies, and within minutes the event was abandoned. With the building taken over, ACORN members inside hosted our own panel on the fight for a Bailiff Free Britain. Members shared experiences of being in council tax debt, bailiff harassment, and the impact on families and communities. Together we made it clear that the days of bullying and intimidation for profit are numbered. After shutting down the conference, members marched to Leeds Civic Hall where a group occupied the lobby to demand that Leeds City Council and Cllr Asghar Khan meet with ACORN Leeds. The council had ignored requests for a meeting for months, but after hundreds of members arrived and made themselves heard, Cllr Khan came down to meet us in person. A formal meeting to discuss ACORN’s demands and the wider campaign was quickly confirmed.

But now, as global stock markets continue to soar, top financial experts are warning that bubbles may be forming that could cost ordinary investors thousands of pounds if they pop. The US stock market is up over 11 pc, the world’s most valuable company Nvidia is up around 32 pc, and the gold price is up an impressive 56 pc. Growing numbers of investors are asking themselves how long this run can continue – and jitters are setting in. On Friday, Donald Trump’s move to ramp up his trade war with China, threatening even higher tariffs, led to a sell off in US and global stock markets. Shares were rising again yesterday, but the bigger fear is that investors have got carried away with the AI tech revolution. Jemma Slingo, pensions and investment specialist at Fidelity International, says: ‘2025 has been a great year for investors so far – despite some bumps in the road. Global stock markets have been climbing, and alternative assets such as gold and silver have soared in value. Nerves are setting in, however.’ Millions of ordinary investors will have benefited thus far and will now be sitting on more valuable pension pots, bumper stocks and shares Isas and other investments as a result. Kristalina Georgieva, managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) warned last week that stock market valuations are heading towards levels seen during the dot com internet bubble of 25 years ago. Back then, the US stock market fell by 50 pc and it took years for some UK investors to make back their losses. Officials at the Bank of England made similar comparisons, warning last week that the risk has increased of a sharp market correction that could lose investors’ serious amounts of money. It is notoriously difficult to spot a bubble while you’re in it. It is only really when a bubble bursts that you can be sure it ever existed. And investors may miss out if they sell out of investments in the belief that a bubble could burst when in fact markets continue to rise. To help you decide if your investments are at risk, Money Mail ran the rule over popular investments that have surged in value in recent months – and asked top experts to rate how likely it is that they are in ‘bubble’ territory. AI and tech companies Technology companies are largely listed on the US Nasdaq index, which is up 15 pc so far this year. The value of many individual firms that comprise that index are up even more than that, including computer chip-maker Nvidia, cloud computing giant Oracle and Advanced Micro Devices, another chip-maker. The recent rises have pushed the PE ratio of the Nasdaq to 33, and its CAPE ratio to 46. That means that investors are taking a big bet on the money rolling in at US tech firms – and any wobble could precipitate a fall in share prices. Wealth managers at Quilter warn there are far more tech companies on the Nasdaq with no profits or revenues today than in the past. It is a worrying sign when companies are valued highly when they have yet to turn a profit – it means they are unproven and valuations may be based on an optimistic view of their future earning-power. Lindsay James, investment strategist at Quilter, says: ‘This clearly implies that there is a raised risk of a bubble in some areas of the market, but even if that is the case it gives no signal whatsoever about whether that could pop this week or years from now.’ While high, the PE ratio is still considerably lower than just before the dotcom bubble burst. Pyle says the PE for the Nasdaq Index in March 2001 was a jaw-dropping 175.’ Shares in popular AI companies in particular have seen astronomical growth in recent months as investors bet on them emerging as winners of one of the most compelling trends of our time. Chipmaker Nvidia is hitting all-time highs and is now worth an eye-watering $4.45 trillion (£3.5 trillion). Nvidia has a PE ratio of 51. Bubble-ometer score: 8/10 Gold and gold miners The price of gold now exceeds $4,000 per troy ounce – an all-time high as investors turn to the asset class as a safe haven amid the US government’s shutdown, global conflicts, and tepid global economic growth. There are many good reasons why prices have risen. Gold can offer some protection against inflation and many governments have been buying it to reduce dependence on the US dollar. But, with no income, and few uses in the real world other than as decoration and a store of value, analysts say it is hard to pinpoint what a sensible price for gold really is. Dennehy says: ‘There are many reasons to believe that the gold price could continue to rise. Ordinary investors have only this year started to buy more gold than they sell and their increased appetite for it could help push up the price. Shares in gold miners are still cheap so could rise further. However, the gold price is volatile. It wouldn’t be a shock if this advance had a breather, perhaps for a few months.’ Bubble-ometer score: 6/10

The case would have gone ahead. That’s how the system works. ‘The Prime Minister would speak to the attorney general and he’d say, ‘I’ve looked at this case, make sure this case goes ahead,’ call the DPP and tell them to do it.’ So who the hell’s side are you on? Challenge to Starmer by ‘victim’ of China spy scandal – as prosecutors told Labour was anxious to woo Beijing Labour’s manifesto position on China appeared in an ‘independent’ statement by a top national security official accused of collapsing the case against two alleged Beijing spies. A huge political row broke out yesterday over evidence given by deputy national security adviser Matthew Collins, who told prosecutors that Labour wanted to pursue a ‘positive relationship’ with Beijing shortly before the case collapsed. An earlier statement provided by the top civil servant when the charges were laid, at a time the Conservatives were in Downing Street, had no such references. It has been alleged that Labour allowed the case to collapse as it seeks closer economic ties with Beijing, with Mr Collins refusing to brand China an enemy of Britain in his witness statements and so delivering a fatal blow to a prosecution brought under the Official Secrets Act. Senior Tories last night questioned whether Mr Collins had come under political pressure to include his wording. Both of the suspects, English teacher Chris Berry and former parliamentary researcher Chris Cash, have denied any wrongdoing and not guilty verdicts were entered when the case against them fell apart last month. Sir Keir Starmer also faced fresh questions about why he failed to act to try to save the case when he was warned last month it was in danger of collapsing. During angry exchanges in the Commons, former security minister Tom Tugendhat accused the Prime Minister of putting bureaucracy ahead of leadership.

Ken McCallum, head of MI5, China spying on UK speech. Shadow Home Secretary, Chris Philp, Times Radio – China is a hostile state which is operating secret police stations in the UK. In his speech, Sir Ken said “Chinese state actors” presented a threat to UK national security but added that the “overall balance” of the UK’s relationship with China was “a matter for the government”. “When it comes to China, the UK needs to defend itself resolutely against threats and seize the opportunities that demonstrably serve our nation,” he said. The Conservatives have accused the government of allowing the spy case to collapse to avoid jeopardising economic relations with China. Downing Street said it would have been “absurd” for the PM to step in last month after being told the case was going to collapse, stressing it was a “criminal matter” for the CPS to handle independently. In a letter to the prime minister, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch said the events leave “a strong impression that your government undermined Britain’s national security because you are too weak to do anything other than appease China”. In his reply, Sir Keir argued that the prosecution’s case relied on the then Conservative government’s policy towards China at the time of the alleged offences, between 2021 and 2023. “In other words, the prosecution’s case required demonstrating that the position of the then Conservative government was that China was an enemy of the United Kingdom,” he said, and it was “plainly wrong” to suggest that had been Tory policy. The head of the CPS Stephen Parkinson is also in the firing line, with MPs suggesting there was sufficient evidence to put the case before a jury. He is reported to have told senior MPs on Wednesday that the evidence was “5%” short of what would have been required to stand a chance of getting a conviction. The Conservatives have written to the CPS to ask what evidence it had wanted the government to provide. And the chairs of four parliamentary committees have written to Mr Parkinson asking for “a fuller explanation for the dropping of charges”. Labour MP Emily Thornberry, who chairs the foreign affairs committee, told the BBC’s World at One: “I can’t see that the jury would have had any problem deciding that China was a threat. “I really don’t understand why they [the CPS] were being so pusillanimous about it.” Another signatory, Labour MP Matt Western, has said the Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy is launching a formal inquiry into the case.

Man convicted of 38 paedophile offences revealed as police informer who spied on UK activists Trial of Nick Gratwick, 68, who schemed to rape children as young as six, exposes previous role among green protesters At his trial, his defence said that he had created a fake persona to string along abusers and extract information so they could be prosecuted. A man who schemed to rape children as young as six was revealed at his trial to have been a police informer who spied on environmental activists. Nick Gratwick, 68, was found guilty on Friday of 38 “abhorrent” paedophile offences, including plans over the last two years to pay to rape or sexually assault children in the UK and abroad. The trial at Guildford crown court, in Surrey, heard the contents of graphic conversations on encrypted applications which were described by the National Crime Agency (NCA) as “some of the worst seen by specialist child abuse investigators”. Gratwick discussed harming children for sexual pleasure, arranging to pay a Romanian mother to allow him to rape her daughter, and advised others on how to drug children to abuse them. The radio engineer, of Mitcham, south London, was also found guilty of possessing more than 1,300 photographs and videos of children being abused. In an astonishing twist, the trial also exposed his previous role as an informer who worked for the police infiltrating prominent environmental and animal rights protests for six years in the 1990s and 2000s. He masqueraded as an activist keen to protect the environment and to prevent the exploitation of animals, but, unknown to campaigners, he was at the same time secretly passing information to the police. Among the campaigners he spied on were those taking part in the Newbury bypass protest, a landmark campaign to prevent the chopping down of thousands of trees in a largely protected ancient landscape to make way for a 9-mile bypass around Newbury, in Berkshire. In 1996, thousands of activists set up 30 camps along the planned route, erecting treehouses, digging a tunnel and clinging to trees to stymie the plans. The road ended up costing £74m to build, £5m to police and £25m for the 800 security guards employed to deter the campaigners. Nearly 800 arrests were made. Activists told the Guardian that Gratwick played a prominent role in helping to organise the protests, supervising the acquisition and distribution of equipment, such as rope and harnesses, to assist the protests. Craig Logan, a campaigner, said: “Literally people from every camp would come and talk to him about what they were doing at their camp, what they want to build, what they were trying to do. I can’t think of a better role that you could have for an informant … he’s absolutely at the core of it.” Gratwick was known by the nickname “Radio Nick”, as he was instrumental in establishing a network of CB radios – at a time before mobile phones were being used widely – so that activists in different camps could communicate and warn each other about the impending police actions. Recruit spies with MICE – money, ideology, compromise, ego Former CIA analyst reveals the peculiar reason people become spies and betray their country As much as people hope that its high browed ideas such as ideology that drives people to betray their country and hand secrets over to a rival power, it’s actually something far more intimate Betraying your country and becoming a spy for a foreign power can be done for high and mighty reasons but one common thread running between those who have chosen to do it is far less heroic and far more unexpected – daddy issues. The motivations behind spies has long fascinated people. Speaking with the Mirror, Gordon Corera, the BBC’s Security Correspondent, explained the motives. He said: “It’s the endless question about spies. About getting deep into their motivation. The acronym MICE – money, ideology, compromise, ego – is thrown about but this is a little reductive.  “It’s often more complicated than that. It’s one of the fascinated things that if you go back in history it can be something very personal, very intimate. To do with how they deal with their boss, or wives or even there parents that is at the root of it.” David McCloskey, former CIA analyst and author of Moscow X, added to this putting his finger on one of the key connecting features of the turncoats. He said: “It’s pretty stock-in-trade in the CIA to assume that there’s something wrong with the people who are doing this. These are not normal people, it’s not a normal thing to say: ‘I’m going to provide critical information that I’ve been entrusted with to a foreign government. “If you look at a lot of people who have conducted espionage over time is a general through line of daddy issues. Not everyone with daddy issues becomes a spy but most people who have betrayed their countries have daddy issues. Kim Filby was a British intelligence officer who turned double agent for the Soviet Union in the early stages of the Cold War. He was a key member of the notorious spy ring – the Cambridge Five. Gordon and David are teaming up to discuss the murky world of espionage in their new podcast, The Rest Is Classified. Documents seen by The Mail on Sunday reveal the former prime minister urged Business Secretary Peter Kyle to consult a technology institute founded by his friend Larry Ellison in a private meeting last year. Mr Ellison, the world’s second richest man, has donated or pledged a staggering £257million for the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change. He founded the Ellison Institute of Technology (EIT), a research centre in Oxford, and is chairman of tech giant Oracle, which has a £700million IT deal with four Whitehall departments. Experts say Oracle is now in pole position to profit from plans to force millions of adults to sign up for a digital ID card. And an exclusive MoS analysis can reveal that after Sir Tony’s meeting with Mr Kyle, Mr Ellison’s organisations have enjoyed astonishing access to the very top of Government. Indeed, staff from Oracle and EIT have met with ministers and senior officials no fewer than 29 times in nine months. Mr Kyle, Health Secretary Wes Streeting and Chancellor Rachel Reeves have met bosses from Oracle. This has all the hallmarks of yet another cosy deal between Labour insiders and powerful vested interests.’ Official papers released under Freedom of Information laws show Sir Tony met Mr Kyle, then technology secretary, at the former PM’s London office on September 12, 2024. During the meeting Sir Tony ‘noted the work of the Ellison Institute… and recommended that SoS [Secretary of State Peter Kyle] sought a briefing on their work’, according to official civil service minutes obtained by investigative website Democracy for Sale. He highlighted how the institute could become ‘an excellent resource’. The documents show an official at Mr Kyle’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology was instructed to ‘look at how we should engage’ with the institute. Sir Tony is among a ‘faculty of fellows’ at EIT, whose campus in Oxford is due to be completed in 2027. The papers also show that Sir Tony asked the cabinet minister ‘where he could support the department’ and highlighted the huge cost savings that digital identity cards could bring. ‘TB noted that the Indian Government had saved $15 billion in fraudulent costs using digital ID,’ the minutes of the meeting state. On Saturday, representatives for Sir Tony said that in the meeting he discussed ‘the investment Larry Ellison is making in science and technology in the UK’. Keir Starmer last week provoked a backlash after announcing that anyone who wants to work in the UK will need a digital ID card. Sir Tony has long championed the policy and his think-tank told the MoS on Saturday that the roll-out would ‘boost the British economy’. But civil liberties groups have warned it risks creating ‘a dystopian nightmare’, while a petition against the plan on Saturday passed 1.6million signatures.

Prof David Nutt Psilocybin is a hallucinogenic chemical in magic mushrooms ‘Absurd’ laws dealing with magic mushrooms, ecstasy and cannabis are hindering medical research, according to a former government drugs adviser. Prof David Nutt says he has funding to research the use of the chemical psilocybin – found in fungi known as “magic mushrooms” to treat depression. But he says “insane” regulations mean he cannot get hold of the drug. The Home Office said there was “no evidence” that regulations were a barrier to research. It is not the first time Prof Nutt has been at odds with government policy. He was sacked as an adviser over views that ecstasy and LSD were less harmful than alcohol. Psilocybin is illegal in the UK and is a Class A drug. Earlier research at Imperial College London showed that injections of psilocybin could calm a region of the brain which is overactive in depression. The group is now trying to conduct a clinical trial to test psilocybin as a treatment. Stumbling block The UK’s Medical Research Council has given the lab a £550,000 grant to test the idea – in 30 patients who have not responded to at least two other therapies. They have also been given ethical approval. However, there are more stringent regulations for testing the drug as a treatment than in earlier experiments. As a potential medicine it must meet Good Manufacturing Practice requirements set out by the EU. “It hasn’t started yet because the big problem is getting hold of the drug,” said Prof Nutt. He said finding a company to provide a clinical-grade psilocybin had “yet proved impossible” as none was prepared to “go through the regulatory hoops”. “So we are between a rock and a hard place, which is very unfortunate, because if this is an effective treatment for patients then they’re obviously being denied that possibility so one of the things we have to do now is have a more rational debate about the way the drugs laws are being implemented.” He will tell the British Neuroscience Association that similar rules are hampering research into other drugs such as ecstasy and cannabis. Ahead of the meeting he told the BBC: “We have regulations which are 50 years old, have never been reviewed and they are holding us back, they’re stopping us doing the science and I think it’s a disgrace actually.” A Home Office spokesman said: “Our licensing regime enables legitimate research to take place while ensuring that harmful drugs don’t get into the hands of criminals. “We have no evidence to suggest that the current listing of psilocybin as a schedule one substance is a barrier to attracting funding for legitimate research.”

More in Common also polled voters for their perception of party leaders, and found that both Sir Keir Starmer and Kemi Badenoch have sunk to new lows. Sir Keir has reached a new approval rating of -49, while Mrs Badenoch has also sunk to -32. In September, YouGov published its first MRP mega poll since June, confirming that Nigel Farage is on course to be Britain’s next prime minister. MRP polls are much more accurate than other polls, with a sample size of 13,000 compared to the usual 2,000. It allows the pollster to dig into the details and make accurate seat-by-seat forecasts. On Wednesday, YouGov forecast that Mr Farage is on course to be prime minister, though he could still fall short of an overall majority. The reputable pollster reported that Reform would win 311 seats if the election were called now, just 14 shy of an overall majority. This is a big improvement since its last MRP poll three months ago, when Mr Farage was set to fall 55 seats short of a majority. By contrast, Labour has fallen back further, and would now win just 144 seats, 34 seats fewer than YouGov forecast in its last MRP.

From the end of July 2024 to the end of July 2025, the debt rocketed from £2.53 trillion to £2.71 trillion meaning the current Labour government has racked up £186.2 billion in borrowing in just 12 months. The Information Commissioner’s Office has ordered the council to get better at responding to subject access requests. Anybody has the legal right to ask a public organisation, such as a council, to send them information they hold about them. While responding to these requests is onerous, public organisations have to respond by law, in a similar way to freedom of information requests. But in Bristol, people are often made to wait much longer than the legal deadline. Now the Information Commissioner, a regulator, has wrapped the council on its knuckles for failing to respond to subject access requests. Sally-Anne Pool, head of investigations at the ICO, said: “Subject access requests are a fundamental right that allows people to know what information organisations hold about them and how it is being used. Despite our repeated engagement with Bristol City Council over a sustained period of time, limited progress has been made to clear a backlog of requests. “Our investigation has found that the council’s approach towards compliance demonstrates a poor organisational attitude towards data rights and compliance with the law. This enforcement notice requires them to clear their SAR backlog in a timely manner, and make lasting improvements to bring their practices in line with the law.” Earlier this year, a judge threw out an unprecedented appeal in a similar situation. The Information Commissioner hit the council with an enforcement notice due to its poor performance responding to freedom of information requests. The council then appealed this notice, with the case ending up in front of a tribunal. This latest enforcement notice requires the council to contact all people with overdue subject access requests, to notify them of delays; give weekly progress updates to the ICO until all overdue requests are resolved; create and share an action plan within 90 days to address the backlog; and provide outstanding responses to requests within set deadlines.

Armed police who shot synagogue terror victims, killing one and injuring another, could face criminal charges Greater Manchester Police (GMP) admitted one of the victims of Thursday’s attack died after apparently being injured by a police gunshot. His family tonight described him as a hero. Another person was also injured as police sought to contain the terror threat. It is believed both victims were standing behind a door at Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Crumpsall when they were hit. Al-Shamie, 35, was shot dead at the scene wearing what appeared to be a suicide vest. The device was later discovered not to be viable. But police do not believe Al-Shamie was armed, meaning the two gunshot injuries were likely from police firearms. In a statement, Emily Barry, director of engagement at the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), said the watchdog would now investigate. She said: ‘Our thoughts remain with the victims and their families, as well as all those affected by yesterday’s horrific events. ‘As is standard when there has been a fatal police shooting, we are carrying out an independent investigation to establish the facts of what happened, and our findings will be shared with the coroner in due course. ‘IOPC investigators attended the police post-incident procedures and were at the scene last night gathering evidence. We will be present at the post-mortems today to provide independent oversight. ‘It is important in these circumstances that the police are able to continue their vital work, and there are established protocols we follow to ensure our role does not hinder their ability to conduct enquiries as part of their own investigations. ‘We will share further information when we are in a position to do so.’ Adrian Daulby, 53, and Melvin Cravitz, 66, died after Al-Shamie drove into a group of people before stabbing a man. The terrorist was shot dead by police seven minutes after officers were alerted to the attack, which took place on Yom Kippur, Judaism’s holiest day. In a tribute Mr Daulby’s family described him as ‘a hero’ who ‘tragically lost his life in the act of courage to save others’ They said: ‘Adrian was one of the brave worshippers attending the synagogue at the time of incident and prevented the attacker from gaining access to the premises. ‘It is currently believed that Adrian’s injury may sadly have been sustained as a tragic and unforeseen consequence of the urgently required action taken by our officers to bring a vicious attack to an end.’ Yoni Finlay, who is being treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, was holding the doors of the synagogue closed to stop the attacker entering when he was injured during gunfire by police, the BBC reported. Arnold Saunders, a rabbi and Conservative councillor, said Mr Finlay was now ‘stable’ in hospital and ‘out of the woods’.

Police were called to a hospital where a man in his 30s arrived with a knife wound on September 22. He self-presented after the attack in the Hounslow area of London. Al Furqan Education Trust, a charity and community centre in Hounslow, has identified the victim as Imam Sheikh Mohamed Yusuf. The trust said the religious leader was “the victim of an unprovoked stabbing” in a “deeply distressing incident”. It added that the motive for the attack “remains unknown”, with police adding that it is keeping an open mind as it investigates. There have been no arrests. A spokesperson for the Al Furqan Education Trust, Hounslow, posted to X: “Our community experienced a deeply distressing incident involving our Imam, Imam Yusuf, who was the victim of an unprovoked stabbing. “Alhamdulillah’s, he is currently in a stable condition in hospital and receiving the appropriate care. “This matter is now the subject of an active police investigation. Babies could be born without a biological mother after scientists made a huge step forward in helping infertile people have babies. Scientists revealed only yesterday that they have turned human skin cells into eggs and fertilised them with sperm in the lab for the first time. American experts from Oregon Health & Science University say that the human eggs made from skin cells are ready for fertilisation. When the team fertilised the egg with sperm, it began growing into an embryo, until the experiment was halted at six days – the point at which an embryo would be transferred to the womb in IVF. The breakthrough would allow older women struggling to conceive or women who lack eggs for medical reasons to have a baby. It also opens the door for DNA from a man being placed inside a donor egg and fertilised by another man, leading to a baby with two biological fathers and no DNA from a woman. “It also would allow same-sex couples to have a child genetically related to both partners,” Dr Paula Amato, co-author of the study told AFP. The study could also also result in a infinite amount of eggs. Dr Amato told The Telegraph: “In theory, the technique could result in a limitless number of eggs. “The skin cell DNA however can come from anyone, even if they personally don’t have any eggs or remaining eggs – older women, women after cancer treatment, people born without eggs, men. “So, it’s a way to produce eggs genetically identical to the person providing the skin cell, even if they personally don’t have any eggs, and allows them to reproduce to have a genetically-related child.”

As part of this war preparation, the EU Commission has drafted a 7-year budget that is more about Ukraine than about the European Union.” “This is practically a Ukraine budget,” he then emphasized. “Instead of tackling Europe’s real challenges, such as restoring competitiveness, ensuring energy security, and rebuilding economic growth, they focus on financing the Ukrainian army and the Ukrainian state.” Meanwhile, European Council President Antonio Costa described at a press briefing, “Leaders broadly supported initial priority flagship projects that will strengthen Europe’s security, including the European drone wall and the Eastern Flank Watch.” A lot of noise has been made over last month’s alleged several incursions of Russian aircraft, mostly drones, in European airspace.

Top military brass intensifies Germany’s war preparations against Russia – With the appointment of Lieutenant General Christian Freuding as the new Inspector of the Army, the highest-ranking officer of the military brass, the German government has taken another step in its aggressive rearmament and war preparations. Defence Minister Boris Pistorius (Social Democratic Party, SPD) praised Freuding as the “general of the new era” and the “head of German Ukraine policy.” Freuding represents a new generation of officers who are not merely ready but eager to wage war. His appointment comes at a time when the German and European bourgeoisie are rapidly preparing for a major conflict—against Russia abroad and against their own population at home. This development parallels that in the United States. At the end of September, US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth assembled hundreds of generals at a military base near Washington D.C. to invoke the so-called “warrior ethos”—an open call to arms against Russia, China and ultimately any domestic opposition. Germany’s ruling class is moving along the same lines. The German cabinet recently adopted the Military Security Act, granting the army sweeping powers for deployment at home. It authorises not only the use of armed drones but also expands soldiers’ authority to carry out searches, arrests and other measures against civilians. Recent exercises, such as those held in Hamburg, show that the Bundeswehr (Armed Forces) are already training for operations inside the country—a development that like the preparations for war against Russia recalls the darkest chapters of German history. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed he had halted Israel’s offensive to “prepare for the immediate implementation of the first phase of the Trump Plan for the immediate release of all hostages,” his office said. The 67-year-old was sailing on the Omar Al Mokhtar boat – which originally set sail from Libya – as part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, which was aiming to deliver much-needed humanitarian aid to Gaza. Israeli forces intercepted the 40-strong convoy in international waters last week, detaining nearly 500 people and imprisoning them in the notorious Ketziot prison, where activists reported being subject to degrading conditions, torture, and a lack of access to food and water, among other things. Concerns were raised regarding Ridley’s condition after it was reported she was being subject to “aggressive” and “intimidating” treatment, was without medication and had joined a number of other activists in going on hunger strike in protest. Ridley, who is originally from the north east of England but is based in Scotland, is a founding member of the Alba Party. She is also an award-winning journalist who made headlines in 2001 when she was captured by the Taliban and held for 11 days after entering Afghanistan without a visa. Ridley was deported from Israel on Tuesday along with 130 other activists to Jordan. The National understands Ridley flew to Istanbul in Turkey before flying to Libya with the rest of the Omar Al Mokhtar crew who were released on Saturday. She flew to Libya on a private jet belonging to the Libyan government. It is understood the flotilla participants will receive a special welcome from the government upon their arrival. “I mean, could you imagine Keir Starmer sending a private jet to get me out? It really puts it into perspective how some countries treat their citizens,” she told The National. Ridley said it was “wonderful to be away from that horrible prison”, but added that she was “sad for all the children in Gaza” who the activists were unable to reach. “That was the reason for our mission,” she said. “We just wanted to open a humanitarian corridor on the Mediterranean Sea so that we could get our aid into Gaza. “I’m sorry we failed you.”

But the seemingly opposed worldviews of Land and Dugin are the very ether within which alt-right thought is steeped. It is an ideology torn between technophilic Futurism and neo-Orthodox Traditionalism. Both positions reject Enlightenment modernity, but each of these fascist ‘postmodernisms’ represents its own distinct variety or brand. For Dugin, the break with modernity is accomplished through an ethno-religious apocalypse – a return to orthodoxy, and an activation of a mystical eschaton beyond time. Land imagines the break from liberal modernity will be accomplished through an accelerating techno-capitalism, superseding humanity itself. Despite these differences, both figures reject modernity as ending in the nightmare of cultural Marxism.
