A Conservative Friends of Israel spokesperson said in response to Duncan’s attack that it is “not affiliated to any political party in Israel.” “We enjoy cordial relations across the political spectrum in Israel,” the spokesperson added. “We support the Conservative government in its aim of a two-state solution and a peaceful resolution in the Middle East conflict.” ‘He should be sacked’ The row over Duncan’s comments comes amid heightened tensions in British politics over Israel’s war with Hamas. Duncan, who stepped down as an MP in 2019, claimed Tom Tugendhat, the U.K.’s security minister, disagrees with criticism of Israel’s settlement building — and urged his ouster. “How can you have a security minister in the British government, who does not believe in international law, when all this is going on? I think he should be sacked,” Duncan told LBC. Tugendhat has been contacted by POLITICO for comment. Their call was also backed by two of the country’s leading intelligence experts, who argued that Britain needed to use any leverage it could to persuade Israel, and its biggest backer the United States, to change course in the conflict. The British government has been a staunch ally of Israel since the eruption of hostilities on Oct. 7 but Foreign Secretary David Cameron has hardened his language in recent months over the humanitarian situation in Gaza. Cameron said on March 8 that Israel had to be compliant with international humanitarian law in order for Britain to grant export licences allowing arms sales to Israel, and that a judgement on that was underway and due in the “coming days”. The Foreign Office said on Thursday it kept advice on Israel’s adherence to the law under review but that the content of government advice was confidential. Senior members of Britain’s legal profession said the government needed to halt sales now to avoid “aiding and assisting an international wrongful act”. “The provision of military assistance and material to Israel may render the UK complicit in genocide as well as serious breaches of International Humanitarian Law,” the judges, barristers and legal academics said in a 17-page letter to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. One of the former justices, Jonathan Sumption, told BBC Radio he was concerned the British government had lost sight of its own obligations under international law. The Covert Operation to Back Ukrainian Independence that Haunts the CIA – After WWII, officials in Washington sent scores of agents to their deaths in a misguided effort to create an uprising against Moscow. In late 1949, a series of unmarked flights began launching from central Europe. Gargantuan C-47s, flown by Hungarian or Czech pilots, barreled toward Turkey, and then turned north over the Black Sea, evading radar by flying barely above the ground. As the planes flew over Lviv a string of parachutes opened, a handful of commandos tumbling into the sky over Soviet Ukraine. On the ground, they linked up with Ukrainian resistance fighters trying to beat back Soviet expansionism. Operation Red Sox, as it was known, was one of the first covert missions of the still new Cold War. The American-trained commandos would feed intelligence back to their handlers using new radio and communications equipment, stoking nascent nationalist movements in Ukraine, Belarus, Poland and the Baltics. The goal was to provide the U.S. unprecedented insight into Moscow’s designs in Eastern Europe — and, if possible, to help crack apart the Soviet empire itself. Over half a decade, dozens of operatives took part in these flights, becoming one of the U.S.’s “biggest covert operations” in post-War Europe. Ukraine’s bloody insurgency was the operation’s centerpiece. And it was in Ukraine that, as one scholar wrote, the CIA saw one of its “most pronounced failures of the Cold War.”
75th anniversary of NATO al Jazeera report – NATO faces ‘catastrophic defeat’ in Ukraine – ex-Pentagon adviser Strategist Edward Luttwak has argued that members of the US-led bloc will have to deploy troops to prevent a Russian victory NATO nations can only forestall an inevitable loss to Russian forces in Ukraine by deploying their troops to the former Soviet republic, a former adviser to the US military has claimed. “The arithmetic of this is inescapable: NATO countries will soon have to send soldiers to Ukraine, or else accept catastrophic defeat,” military strategist Edward Luttwak wrote in an oped published on Thursday by the British online media outlet UnHerd. “The British and French, along with the Nordic countries, are already quietly preparing to send troops – both small elite units and logistics and support personnel – who can remain far from the front.” The conflict can’t be won without direct troop deployments because regardless of the quantity and quality of weapons sent to Kiev, Ukrainian forces are too outnumbered by the Russians, Luttwak argued. “This means that unless [Russian President Vladimir] Putin decides to end the war, Ukraine’s troops will be pushed back again and again, losing soldiers in the process who cannot be replaced.” Luttwak’s comments follow weeks of battlefield advances by Russian forces in the Donbass region. Western leaders have insisted that they can ensure a Ukrainian victory by providing aid to Kiev, but French President Emmanuel Macron suggested in February that direct troop deployments by NATO members could not be ruled out.
