Paul Martin is the new Chief Executive – he has a history of agreeing to projects that don’t benefit the public. New Bristol City Council chief executive is named He’ll only be an interim one until they find someone to do the job permanently The new man in charge of Bristol City Council – for the next few months at least – has been named, as Paul Martin, a local government boss who previously ran councils in London and the Government of Jersey. Mr Martin has been chosen as the interim chief executive at City Hall, and will run the authority while the council recruits a permanent chief executive. The previous one, Stephen Peacock, is leaving at the start of June to take up a new role as the West of England Combined Authority’s chief executive. Council leader Cllr Tony Dyer has told councillors and staff at City Hall that Paul Martin will ‘lead us through an important transitional period’, as the organisation running Bristol gets used to the new committee system in place of having a directly-elected mayor. In a letter to staff, Cllr Dyer thanked the outgoing chief exec Stephen Peacock, whose last day in the job will be on June 9. “During his time here he has led the council through some challenging times, but he has always been focused on making a difference to the lives of our citizens and supporting our dedicated workforce towards our goals,” said Cllr Dyer. Mr Martin comes with a track record of leading big local authorities in London – most notably Wansdworth and Richmond-upon-Thames and in 2021 he took up a temporary role as the chief executive for the Government of Jersey. In Wandsworth, he was in charge as the council there co-ordinated big regeneration projects, including Battersea Power Station and the Nine Elms redevelopment, which became well known and sparked controversy over its ‘poor door’ system which separated social housing tenants from other residents, and denied them the use of a landmark rooftop pool.

Questions over Temple Quarter’s public spaces after phone ban ‘fiasco’ ast week a publicly accessible space behind Temple Meads station saw signs appearing to ban phones Councillors have raised questions over how public spaces will be managed in a major regeneration project in Bristol. Ten thousand homes are planned for a 130-hectare area around Temple Meads train station, as well as space for 22,000 jobs and a new university campus. The Temple Quarter regeneration is a joint project between Bristol City Council, Homes England, the West of England Combined Authority and Network Rail. In January they will set up a new company to lead the project, then hire a developer in spring next year. The University of Bristol is building a new campus behind Temple Meads, where the Royal Mail sorting office used to be. Contractors will soon start enabling works on Temple Island, ahead of 500 flats, offices and a hotel being built there by Legal & General, a finance firm. However it’s unclear whether the new “public areas” in all of the developments will be owned privately. Last week signs were temporarily put up appearing to ban the use of phones in a publicly accessible area in Temple Quay North, owned by Homes England, a government developer. Green Councillor Martin Fodor pressed for answers on whether the “fiasco” would be repeated once the Temple Quarter regeneration was complete, during a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, November 7. Mayor Marvin Rees said the area will become much more accessible. Cllr Fodor said: “Will the spaces between the developments, the public spaces, the roads, and any new areas for recreation be in public hands or private hands? More and more of the city is in private hands, managed in Harbourside, Millennium Square, Cabot Circus and Temple Quay North.

The first ever Green leader of Bristol has warned that the city council is at risk of going bankrupt unless urgent action is taken. Councillor Tony Dyer has revealed that the authority presently faces an overspend of £22m. A savings programme is being developed, with warnings that some charges will also rise. But there is already criticism from campaigners, with accusations that the Greens have rowed back on earlier pledges. ‘Very challenging’ In May’s local elections the Greens won the most seats, though without an overall majority. They were delighted, but three months later the mood is very different. Money was already tight, but extra costs have come to light, and planned savings have fallen short. “The financial situation is very challenging,” said Mr Dyer. That has led to a warning that Bristol could end up issuing a Section 114 notice – effectively going bankrupt.

Britain’s biggest water supplier made the shock demand in its response to Ofwat’s proposals to cap household water charges. Ofwat proposed in its draft determination in July that water firms should be allowed to increase bills by a third less than they had requested on average, capping it at around £19 extra a year. Thames Water put forward plans in April to increase bills by 44% in the five years to 2030. But Ofwat has proposed that Thames Water bill increases should be capped at 23% over that period and spending at £16.9 billion. Debt-laden Thames Water has now come back saying that it believes customer bills need to rise by far more than Ofwat has proposed – and even more than the firm itself first put forward. The water company proposed raising average yearly water bills to as much as £696, a 59% increase, if it is given extra spending allowances by the regulator. The average bill over the five-year period from 2025 to 2030 would be £638 under the proposal. Average bills in 2023 to 2024 were £433.

Summer 2024 Solidarity Brigade will visit Santa Clara, the site of the Che Guevara monument and museum, world heritage city Trinidad and explore local development in Cienfuegos. Summer 2024 brigade programme includes working in a rural area outside Havana alongside local farmers, as well as visits to museums and historical sites, plus talks on the current challenges of the US blockade, the economy, democracy and international solidarity. They will visit the Ecological Research Station in the Sierra del Rosario Biosphere Reserve to explore Cuba’s incredible biodiversity and how the environment is being protected. While in Cienfuegos they will visit a children’s community project and theatre, an agricultural cooperative to look at sustainable agriculture, and a small business to discuss new economic models on the island. They will also get to visit the city of Trinidad, a world heritage site, and spend the eve of the important national date 26 July with a local community, visiting Santa Clara and the Che Guevara museum and monument there on 26 July.

In a city with a history of resistance, the demise of the ‘strong leader’ mayoral model was perhaps inevitable. But community activism lives on. Listen: People Just Do Something and how to start a student encampment People Just Do Something is a relaxing and possibly enraging podcast about people who might self-identify as activists, untangling the means of effecting change in Bristol, broken Britain and beyond. People Just Do Something Pro-Palestine student encampments that began in the US earlier this year quick began popping up around the world. Students across Britain, including in Bristol, pitched their tents on their institution’s greens and public spaces to send a clear message and have remained there for months. The encampments were united by a simple cause: forcing academic institutions to divest funds from companies complicit in Israel’s genocide in Gaza. British universities alone have invested almost £4.3 billion in companies that fund, service or arm Israel, while flatly denying links to its regime. Those camping out at the University of Bristol’s Royal Fort Gardens said they would remain there until the uni “ends its complicity”. It resisted attempts to clear them off, including a legal challenge from the university, before standing down after a two-month stand off. In this second instalment of our new podcast series, People Just Do Something, reporters Priyanka and Isaac sit down with Daniel Green from the Palestine encampment at Cardiff University to discuss what it takes to organise one, including strategy, safeguarding, and communication.

Roger Cook – Central TV Cook Report on buying nuclear weapons on the black market. Nuclear material on black market. Iran nuclear bomb? the programme hired an eminent consultant nuclear engineer who built us a highly accurate replica nuclear device in a briefcase from information freely available on the internet. There were several options, but the programme opted to replicate a relatively simple bomb that would operate in one of two modes – in that even if it failed to produce a nuclear explosion, it would still act as a very effective Radiological Dispersal Device – an RDD. These evil devices later became known as ‘dirty bombs’, so called because triggering them would disperse countless millions of highly radioactive particles over the target area and could render that area uninhabitable for centuries. In a seedy back-street maisonette in Moscow, Cook’s Mafiosi targets negotiated to sell him 25 kilogrammes of Plutonium 239 for $200 million and offered a sample from a stash kept under the stairs next to their vacuum cleaner. The situation was as bizarre as it was dangerous and the sample later tested out as the real thing. Also on offer was a ready-made bomb in the form of an SS-20 nuclear warhead. Naturally, that was as far as the programme took the transaction, but the vendors were reported to the Russian security services, the FSB, later that day. They were promptly arrested and the illegal nuclear material was recovered. So, it was relatively easy to build a dirty bomb – and as the Cook Report would prove, relatively easy to acquire the nuclear material needed to do so. And if mere journalists could do this, surely a terrorist could too.

Imagine potentially live thermonuclear weapons falling off trolleys and clattered across the concrete. Aircraft with full bomb loads of nukes catching fire and burning to ash on US airbases. Nuclear bombers crashing and spreading plutonium dust for miles around. Planes taking off with their wiring mixed up, so that setting the onboard bombs to ‘safe’ actually armed them for detonation. These are the kinds of incidents Schlosser describes, and they are truly terrifying. At the heart of ‘command and control’ lies the story of an accident at a missile silo in rural Arkansas, where a handful of men struggled to prevent the explosion of a ballistic missile carrying the most powerful nuclear warhead ever built by the United States Schlosser interweaves this minute-by-minute account with a historical narrative that spans more than fifty years. American Political Science Review NukewatchUK Watching Britain’s Weapons of Mass Destruction How to spot a nuclear weapons convoy Once seen, a nuclear warhead convoy is easily recognisable and unlike anything else on the roads. There is a multiplicity of escort vehicles, often spread out over several miles, and travelling at up to 55mph. The best way to tell if you have seen a nuclear weapons convoy is to compare it to our recent videos here A warhead convoy contains: Warhead load carriers (enormous, plain dark green trucks) Ministry of Defence Police escort vehicles Military support vehicles to deal with accidents or breakdowns The warhead carriers are 44 tons, seven axle, articulated dark green trucks made by Mercedes-Benz. They are military green with the rear trailer covered by a fitted canvas. These trucks are known as TCHD’s, short for Truck Cargo Heavy Duty. Usual Convoy Configuration There could be a number of motorcycle outriders who will change position throughout the convoy as they stop traffic on side roads (*these outriders do not normally accompany the Convoy along motorways). Mercedes vans with large blue and yellow checkered stripes carrying the convoy commander and escort commander will be in front and behind. There are usually between 3 and 5 warhead carriers. Mercedes vans travel immediately in front and behind each carrier. The fire engine will follow, sometimes at a distance. The three support vehicles of Mobile Workshop & trailer, Breakdown Truck, and Support Coach travel some distance behind the main convoy. If the carriers are held up then these vehicles will wait several miles behind. All vehicles travel with lights on even in daytime.

Nuclear weapons factory near Reading handed warning after inspection The Atomic Weapons Establishment, Aldermaston and Burghfield has failed to address shortfalls Safety measures must be improved at a weapons factory near Reading, a regulator has warned. The Atomic Weapons Establishment, Aldermaston and Burghfield, has “failed to adequately address shortfalls”, the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) warned on July 19. The factory makes warheads for Trident, the UK’s nuclear weapons programme. The regulator has served improvement notices to the firm, demanding it improves “risk assessments for organisational change which may affect safety”. The regulator said: “[We] do not consider that the issue poses an immediate risk to nuclear safety, but expect to see sustained improvements so that safety is not adversely affected in the future. “ONR has been focusing on AWE’s organisational change performance for some time.” The regulator previously sent an enforcement letter, carried out targeted inspections, and given advice and guidance. David Cullen, director of the Nuclear Information Service, said: “Even after seven years of enhanced regulation, and two years into an improvement plan, there seems no end in sight and problems keep emerging. In a statement, Atomic Weapons Establishment said: “While improvements have been made, we recognise there is more work to do … and are committed to making the necessary enhancements.” The firm, which owns the factory near Reading, Berkshire, is required to comply with the improvement notices by January 2021. Last week, four protesters were found guilty of aggravated trespass at AWE Burghfield, while blocking entrances. Campaigners from Trident Ploughshares shut down the factory for the day on October 24, 2018. Chris Bluemel, one of those found guilty, previously said that Trident breaches international humanitarian law and the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Putin claims Ukraine tried to attack Kursk nuclear plant Vladimir Putin chairs a meeting on situation in Belgorod, Kursk and Bryansk following Ukraine’s invasion Vladimir Putin has claimed Ukraine tried to attack a nuclear power plant in Russia’s Kursk region overnight. The Russian president made the claim in a meeting with senior officials on Thursday in which Moscow’s response to Ukraine’s invasion of Russia’s border region was discussed. “The enemy tried to strike the nuclear power plant at night, the International Atomic Energy Agency has been informed,” Putin said on Thursday. Kursk’s governor Alexei Smirnov said that 133,190 people had left the border region, while Bryansk’s governor Alexander Bogomaz told Putin that an attempt by Ukraine to pierce its border had been repelled overnight. Kyiv’s incursion into Kursk, which was launched more than two weeks ago, saw thousands of Ukrainian troops pierce Russia’s western border, catching Moscow by surprise. Ukraine did not immediately respond to Putin’s claim.

Reporter Sarah Wilkinson arrested by UK government for opposition to Gaza genocide British human rights activist and reporter Sarah Wilkinson was arrested by UK police on Thursday morning, and subsequently released, allegedly for content she published online in support of Palestine and against the Israeli genocide in Gaza. The social media account Suppressed News quoted Jack Wilkinson, her brother, as saying, “The police came to her house just before 7.30am. [Twelve] of them in total, some of them in plain clothes from the counter-terrorism police. They said she was under arrest for ‘content that she has posted online.’ Her house is being raided, and they have seized all her electronic devices.” MENA Uncensored, a media company recognized by Lebanon’s Ministry of Information for whom Wilkinson is a contributor and roving reporter, said that she was detained for “supporting the Palestinian resistance and relaying what is really happening in Gaza and the West Bank to the world.” The publisher said the UK government alleges that Wilkinson supports terrorism. MENA Uncensored also published on its X account a copy of a letter it issued last April spelling out the role of Wilkinson as a reporter assigned to “cover the unfolding crisis in the Eastern Mediterranean region, particularly in Gaza, including accompanying the Freedom Flotilla aimed at breaking the maritime siege imposed on Gaza.”

Massive Attack delighted soaked fans – Massive Attack’s hometown gig was everything I imagined and more. Massive Attack fans gathered on The Downs last night (Sunday, August 25) to watch Bristol’s band perform what may be their final gig in the city. Echoing times gone by, the clouds closed in just as the headline act began and a torrential downpour followed. Although many soaked-through gig goers packed up and left around halfway through the set, most were happy to brave the rain. Donning ponchos and holding camping chairs above their heads, people were in good spirits. Despite now being in the later years of their careers, Massive Attack sounded fantastic. I overheard many fans whispering phrases such as “they sound just like on the tracks.” Horace Andy supported Massive Attack with ‘Girl I Love You’, followed by Elizabeth Fraser of the Cocteau Twins with ‘Black Milk.’ Now 60, Fraser delivered the same stellar vocals we heard when ‘Teardrop’ was released. The day started when gates opened at 2pm. Buses were running regularly between Bristol Temple Meads and The Downs, though despite road closures, there was a taxi drop-off point taking guests not travelling by bike or public transport directly to the entrance queue.

UK police charge co-founder of Palestine Action under Terrorism Act Richard Barnard is accused of expressing support for Hamas and has been charged with two counts of criminal damage The co-founder of Palestine Action has been charged with violating the Terrorism Act after a series of speeches in Manchester and Bradford. Richard Barnard stands accused of “expressing an opinion that is supportive of a proscribed organisation contrary to section 12 of the Terrorism Act 2000”. Barnard, 41, will appear before the Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 18 September, where he also faces two charges of encouraging or intending to encourage criminal damage. The charges stem from an investigation by the specialised Counter Terrorism Policing North West (CTPNW) unit into a demonstration held on 8 October in Manchester after Hamas launched an attack on southern Israel. Police have accused Barnard of expressing an opinion or belief in support of a proscribed organisation, namely Hamas, and of encouraging criminal damage. He also faces an additional charge of encouraging criminal damage for a speech he delivered in Bradford. On the same day Barnard was charged, counterterrorism police raided the home of another Palestine Action activist suspected of involvement in a breach at an Elbit Systems research facility. Last month, police arrested 10 activists who participated in the raid on a factory in Bristol, detaining them without charge under the Terrorism Act. They were later charged with non-terror offences and remanded to prison. Palestine Action has targeted various Elbit sites across the UK, including factories in Leicester, Oldham and Shenstone, as well as the company’s headquarters in London.

F16 shot down ‘by US Patriot missile’ today in Ukraine. The Israeli newspaper noted, “While many tech firms have streamlined mechanisms through which states can reach out to them” to censor content, “Telegram is considered the least cooperative of them all.” Haaretz adds, “More than that, while many social media platforms have invested heavily in moderation, allowing people and organizations to help monitor content – for example, the removal of antisemitic content or posts inciting terrorism or even the removal of videos from the October 7 massacre – Telegram has not.” Israel has been successful in controlling and censoring information on other social media apps, including Instagram, Facebook, X, and TikTok, via the lobbying of Cyberwell, an NGO with extensive links to Israeli intelligence. The Cambridge-based company fights cyberattacks using software that learns the behavioral patterns of every actor within an organization and detects unusual activity. There is nothing so far to indicate foul play in either man’s respective accidents, which have been put down to a tragic coincidence. Adding to the intrigue, however, are the business partners’ ties to the worlds of U.K. and U.S. intelligence. – Spy connections – Lynch co-founded Darktrace in partnership with former U.K. intelligence officials in 2013. One of the co-founders was Stephen Huxter, a high-ranking figure in MI5’s cyber defense team, who became a managing director at Darktrace. Lynch’s $1 billion VC fund Invoke Capital — set up following the sale of Autonomy — backed the Cambridge University spin-out with an initial investment of £12 million.

The International Criminal Court is also seeking arrest warrants for Israel’s Prime Minister and Defence Minister for crimes against humanity and war crimes, including using starvation as a weapon of war, a view backed by the UN Human Rights Council. Rector Stella Maris was elected by students to represent their voice independently, and whilst she maintains the title, she is being prevented from carrying out this duty. Further to undermining academic freedom, her dismissal which a KC-led investigation commissioned by the university concluded would be disproportionate, is the latest instance of the misuse of university disciplinary processes used to target Palestinians and pro-Palestinian voices. This contributes to a chilling effect on campuses, leading staff and students to self-censor.

Only days before it was due to come into force, the education secretary said she had decided to “stop further commencement of the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Act 2023, in order to consider options, including its repeal”. Bridget Phillipson also announced major changes to the work of the higher education regulator in England, the Office for Students (OfS), in order to prioritise financial stability in the sector, as many universities struggle in the face of a mounting financial crisis. The legislation, which faced bitter opposition from the point of its inception, required universities and student unions to take “reasonable steps” to promote free speech, or face sanctions by the regulator including possible fines. Phillipson was accused of pursuing “ideological dogma” by Damian Hinds, the former schools minister who is now the shadow education secretary. “Free speech is a fundamental right, and this must extend to universities. Without the ability to freely express views in higher education, these centres of learning risk becoming centres of co-option and intolerance,” he said. “The fact this Labour government is willing to scrap the measures we put in place to protect these rights makes clear that they are willing to sacrifice the next generation on the altar of their own ideological dogma.”

These are but a sampling of articles warning of such rampant anti-Jewish hate that Jews fear for their lives—heightened hyperbole of a decades-long legacy of the political exploitation of anti-Jewish racism by pro-Zionist organizations such as the Campaign Against Anti-Semitism, the Community Security Trust, the Board of Deputies and the (U.S.) Anti-Defamation League.

Faiza Shaheen was dropped like a stone last month as Labour candidate for the London seat of Chingford and Woodford Green. “There have been complaints, allegedly, about her ‘liking’ a tweet that referred to the ‘Israel lobby’ – widely considered an anti-Semitic trope,” reported the New Statesman’s associate political editor, Rachel Cunliffe. On a now-infamous Newsnight appearance following her defenestration, a tearful Shaheen apologised for liking the tweet and accepted it was a “trope”. She didn’t have much choice. The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), the statutory regulator, agrees. In 2020, it cited a claim that the “Israel lobby” was behind antisemitism complaints as evidence supporting a finding of unlawful antisemitic harassment. Pappe has entered perilous territory. Journalist Richard Medhurst, arrested at Heathrow, under Terrorism Act, for his journalism. I Was Arrested at Heathrow Airport as a “Terrorist” for My Journalism – The police said I have the right to inform someone I’m locked up. So I said, ok I want to call my family. And then they’d go: “well, your calls are withheld because of the nature of the alleged offense”. I tried to ask: well what’s the point of a right if you can randomly withdraw it? Why tell me that I have this right at all? And one of them said something along the lines of: “well it’s not an absolute right. It can be waived”. Similarly, they said I had the right to know why I was being detained. So I asked (again), and the police would say something like: “we’re just the arresting officers, we don’t really know”, or, “this will be explained to you during the interview”, or some other generic response. Despite the police officers’ civility and cheerfulness, I felt the whole process was designed to humiliate, intimidate, and dehumanize me; to treat me like a criminal, even though they must have been aware of my background and that I am a journalist. I was under surveillance almost the entire time, from the moment I was arrested until I was released, be it in the police van, the station, the cell—all of it. No privacy whatsoever. Many of my requests were also delayed or outright ignored. When I was detained, I asked for water several times. The police would always say “sure”, but I ended up waiting hours for a tiny cup of water. I asked if I could have my own clothes because I was in a t-shirt, it was cold and couldn’t sleep. They said they’d give me a pullover but never did. Although one guard did give me a 2nd blanket. See, you have to nag and nag for the most basic things. This is why I was afraid they weren’t even going to call a solicitor for me. I was able to see the nurse on one occasion. But on three other occasions when I asked to see the nurse, they’d say “yes”, then nothing. For many hours, no one in the world knew what had happened to me or where I was. Only the police could call a solicitor for me. I had to ask 4-5 different guards for several hours until I finally received a call. Some of my solicitor’s calls did not get through or were not answered. One of the calls, my solicitor was told would be monitored and so they simply refused to take it.

Ben Wallace, speaking as Kyiv-led forces continued their shock invasion of Kremlin territory, stated that ‘Ukraine should be allowed’ to fire the Storm Shadow missiles. It comes after the White House denied reports it was blocking a request by the UK for Ukraine to use the missiles. Mr Wallace, who stepped down last year, was behind the UK initially providing Ukraine with Storm Shadow missiles – which have a range of over 155 miles and are highly accurate. By contrast, the US-supplied Himars missiles have a range of around 50 miles. Both weapons have proved effective in striking Russian military infrastructure on the Crimean Peninsula and in eastern Ukraine. Neither has been used amid its incursion in the Kursk region due to restrictions imposed by the White House – apparently because this would represent an escalation of the conflict. Frustrations over the failure to employ the long-range rockets came as Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky suffered another blow yesterday. It emerged that Germany, to date the second biggest international donor of weapons to Kyiv, intends to suspend military aid due to budgetary constraints.

The former TV historian, still a regular presenter on the right-wing channel GB News, has increasingly been accused of indulging and amplifying conspiracy theories. Once a presenter on the BBC’s Coast, Oliverhas moved much of his output to YouTube, where he posts weekly interviews or monologues. Oliver, 57, announced that his most recent video — a discussion with the American writer Whitney Webb about an alleged ruling elite that brings together organised crime, politics and spies — was available on the rival platform Rumble.

What’s ironic is that conflating Webb’s research on Leslie Wexner and other organised crime-linked figures like the Bronfmans with “all Jews” as The Times has done in its hit piece on Webb and Oliver, is the real anti-semitism. Whitney Webb has been a professional writer, researcher and journalist since 2016. She has written for several websites and, from 2017 to 2020, was a staff writer and senior investigative reporter for MintPress News. She currently writes for her own outlet Unlimited Hangout and contributes to The Last American Vagabond and MintPress News. This week, YouTube blocked a video featuring Neil Oliver, a broadcaster and former television historian, and Whitney Webb due to alleged antisemitic content. The video, which was intended for posting on YouTube, claimed that a global and criminal ruling class emerged from the “Jewish mob,” according to The Times. The Times is behind a paywall, however, on Monday, The National published a version of The Times article about YouTube blocking Oliver’s interview with Webb. Explaining the reason for the video being taken down, BBC broadcaster Matthew Sweet said: “This video violated YouTube community guidelines. It claims a global oligarchy descended from the “Jewish mob” rules the world using false charges of antisemtism [sic] to protect it from criticism. So yes, if you want antisemitic videos from [Neil Oliver] you will have to go to Rumble” (Source). Sweet was reposting an image of a tweet from Oliver who was letting his followers know that the interview had been uploaded onto his Rumble channel. Oliver’s tweet said: this is “my interview with Whitney Webb that YouTube doesn’t want you to see.”

These private-in-name-only companies (PINOCs) often feed on large government paychecks, including through subsidies of modern advertising budgets spent to purchase views from their large user-bases, or through initial seed-funding and technological development from former government employees. While spending most of the day hiding behind oft-unread user agreements that restrict user content –– often speech –– or sell user data –– whether for commercial or national security applications, these PINOCs grow fat off of government contracts, amassing formidable, too-big-to-fail status as platforms within the “free” marketplace of ideas.

Special services subjected at least 30,000 people to checks after Raisi’s death, and concluded that human factor was not to blame, according to the source. He said the departure time had been set in advance, based on data from weather services, but the president’s visit to the border with Azerbaijan ran over time, so by the time of departure the weather had worsened. No GPS systems were installed on the helicopters in line with security requirements, the source said. That means the possibility of hacking the aircraft’s electronics systems and any attempts to tamper with them were ruled out.

Under the document, such foreign nationals will have the right to apply for temporary residence in Russia “outside the quota approved by the Russian government and without providing documents confirming their knowledge of the Russian language, Russian history and basic laws.” Applications may be based on the rejection of their countries’ policies “aimed at imposing destructive neoliberal ideals on people, which run counter to traditional Russian spiritual and moral values.” The values are listed in the foundations of Russia’s state policy in this field, while the Russian government is expected to compile a list of countries imposing unhealthy attitudes on their citizens. The Foreign Ministry has been instructed to start issuing three-month visas to such applicants as early as in September. In February, Putin supported the idea of Italian student Irene Cecchini that Russia should ease entry rules for those who share traditional cultural and family values. The head of state agreed that each case requires an individual approach.

Mike Lynch yacht disaster: Missing tycoons ties to UK spy chiefs

The serial entrepreneurs business ventures are entangled in the worlds of both U.K. and U.S. intelligence.

LONDON It was a freak yachting accident that gripped the world.

And the disappearance of British tech tycoon Mike Lynch in stormy seas off the coast of Sicily was even made stranger by the fact that two days earlier, his business partner Stephen Chamberlain was fatally injured in a car accident.

As long-standing business associates, the pair were tried as co-defendants in a fraud trial over the sale of software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion (7 billion). Following the sale of Autonomy in 2011, Lynch co-founded the cybersecurity firm Darktrace and Chamberlain was appointed chief financial officer.

The Cambridge-based company fights cyberattacks using software that learns the behavioral patterns of every actor within an organization and detects unusual activity.

There is nothing so far to indicate foul play in either mans respective accidents, which have been put down to a tragic coincidence.

Adding to the intrigue, however, are the business partners ties to the worlds of U.K. and U.S. intelligence.

Spy connections

Lynch co-founded Darktrace in partnership with former U.K. intelligence officials in 2013.

One of the co-founders was Stephen Huxter, a high-ranking figure in MI5s cyber defense team, who became a managing director at Darktrace.

Lynchs $1 billion VC fund Invoke Capital set up following the sale of Autonomy backed the Cambridge University spin-out with an initial investment of 12 million.

Huxter hired 30-year GCHQ veteran Andrew France as the companys chief executive he later joined the companys board. Lynch sat on the board until 2018, when he stepped down after being charged with fraud.

Former head of MI5 Jonathan Evans also sat on the Darktraces board for a time, while Jim Penrose, a 17-year veteran of the U.S.s National Security Agency, formerly headed up the company’s American operations.

Other former spooks at the company included director of technology Dave Palmer, who previously worked at MI5 and GCHQ, and director of security John Richardson, who worked on cyber defence for the UK government.

But Lynchs connections with the murky sphere of intelligence predated Darktrace. His first company Cambridge Neurodynamics, which specialized in computer-based fingerprint recognition, held contracts with the U.K. intelligence agencies.

They have the most interesting problems, he told Wired magazine in 2002.

Lynch spun Autonomy out of Neurodynamics in 1996. The company, which Chamberlain joined in 2005, used machine learning to analyze data from sources such as intercepted phone calls and emails.

A fan of the fictional spy James Bond, Lynch named conference rooms in Autonomys headquarters after the movie series villains including Dr. No and Goldfinger. He was said to have had a fish tank in the firms reception area filled with vicious piranhas, as a tribute to a scene in the movie You Only Live Twice.

Autonomy also scored high-profile tenders from U.K. and U.S. government agencies, including a contract to provide infrastructure to the U.S. Office of Homeland Security to analyze intelligence as part of the war on terrorism following 9/11.

A 2003 Guardian article described the company as dealing with secret intelligence and among the few UK commercial organizations that stand to profit from the Iraq war. It described the companys technology as advanced computer eavesdropping systems.

At that time, the company held other contracts with U.S. government agencies including the army, NASA, and US intelligence agencies. GCHQ and MI6 were also believed to be clients.

Richard Perle, a former Pentagon appointee who at that time served as chair of the Pentagons defense advisory board, acted as one of the companys directors.

Fraud case

A year after the sale of Autonomy, HP claimed that the firms value had been exaggerated. In 2018, U.S. prosecutors brought charges against Lynch and he was extradited to the U.S. to face trial in 2022.

The company’s chief financial officer, Sushovan Hussain, was convicted of fraud in 2018 and later sentenced to five years in prison.

However, Lynch unexpectedly escaped conviction on the basis that he focused on the company’s tech and had little knowledge of its finances. He put his escape down to being wealthy enough to afford the legal fees involved in fighting the case in the U.S. courts. He was represented by the same defense lawyer as the disgraced late pedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

In April, Darktrace agreed to a $5.3 billion (4.2 billion) takeover by the U.S. private equity firm Thoma Bravo.

Searches for survivors from the yacht accident are ongoing. Lynchs 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, Morgan Stanley International Bank chair Jonathan Bloomer, and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo, are also among those missing.

We do not exclude that they are not inside the boat, but we know the boat sank quickly, said Vincenzo Zagarola, a spokesperson for the Italian coastguard on Tuesday. We suppose that the six people missing may not have had time to get out.

UK trained Ukrainian soldiers ahead of Kursk attack – Times British instructors showed Kiev’s troops how to raid high-rise buildings, the paper has reported Ukrainian troops involved in the incursion by Kiev’s forces into Russia’s Kursk Region, were trained by British military specialists in the weeks before the surprise attack, The Times has reported. On August 6, Ukrainian forces launched their largest attack on Russian territory since the conflict escalated in February 2022. The advance into Kursk Region was swiftly halted by the Russian military, but Kiev’s troops still hold a number of settlements. Kiev “utilized some of Ukraine’s most battle-hardened fighters” taken from other parts of the front line during the incursion, the British paper claimed in an article on Friday.

A Ukrainian serviceman, who spoke to the Times from a hospital bed after being wounded in clashes in the Russian border town of Sudzha, said his unit had been defending Volchansk in Ukraine’s Kharkov Region when he was told that “today they were going to invade Russia.” According to the article, the members of this formation were already “specialists in street fighting,” having being involved in “some of the bloodiest battles” of the conflict, including the fight for the strategic settlement of Avdeevka in Russia’s Donetsk People’s Republic, which Ukrainian troops relinquished in February. The Times reported that, “a month before they were dispatched into Kursk, some of the unit were sent to England where they underwent a few days of training alongside British soldiers.” The major focus of this training course was “raids on high-rise buildings,” it revealed. Western officials have celebrated and voiced support for the Ukrainian incursion into Kursk Region, but denied any prior knowledge of the operation or involvement in it. However, Mikhail Podoliak, the top adviser to Ukrainian leader, Vladimir Zelensky, claimed earlier this week that “there were discussions between partner forces, just not on the public level,” of the attack on Russian territory. Adviser to Russian President Vladimir Putin and former Security Council secretary, Nikolay Patrushev, told Izvestia newspaper on Friday that Kiev’s incursion was “planned with the involvement of NATO and Western special services.” It was the US and its allies who “put the criminal junta at the head of Ukraine,” while “NATO countries have supplied Kiev with weapons, military instructors, and continuous intelligence while controlling the actions of neo-Nazis,” Patrushev added.

British Challenger 2 Tanks Being Used by Ukrainian Forces Inside Russia The UK says Ukraine can use British-provided weapons inside Ukraine Ukrainian troops have been using British Challenger 2 tanks inside Russia as part of the offensive in the Kursk Oblast, Sky News reported on Thursday. The report came a day after the UK Defense Ministry confirmed that Ukraine was allowed to use British weapons inside the Russian mainland. Former British Defense Minister Ben Wallace said that he gave Ukraine permission to use British-provided weapons inside Russia during his time in office. He said the only exception was for the Storm Shadow missiles, which have a range of about 155 miles. The use of British and other NATO-provided weapons inside Russia marks a significant escalation of the proxy war. Earlier this year, Moscow warned that Russian forces could target British military installations in response to British weapons being used in attacks on Russian territory. Military situation in Kursk on August 15, 2024 (SouthFront.press) “Any British military facilities and equipment on the territory of Ukraine and beyond could be a response to Ukrainian strikes with the use of British weapons on the territory of Russia,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in May. The US is also allowing Ukraine to use its weapons in the Kursk offensive. President Biden gave Ukraine the greenlight to strike Russian territory with US weapons at the end of May following Russia’s renewed assault on Kharkiv. The US maintains that Ukraine cannot use US weapons for “long-range” strikes, but it hasn’t defined a limit. Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi claimed on Thursday that Ukrainian forces had penetrated 21 miles into Russian territory…

Pepe Escobar An extremely serious debate is already raging among selected circles of power/intelligence in Moscow – and the heart of the matter could not be more incandescent. To cut to the chase: what really happened in Kursk? Was the Russian Ministry of Defense caught napping? Or did they see it coming and profited to set up a deadly trap for Kiev? Well-informed players willing to share a few nuggets on condition of anonymity all stress the extreme sensitivity of it all. An intel pro though has offered what may be interpreted as a precious clue: “It is rather surprising to see such a concentration of force was unnoticed by satellite and drone surveillance at Kursk, but I would not exaggerate its importance.” Another intel pro prefers to stress that “the foreign intel section is weak as it was very badly run.” This is a direct reference to the state of affairs after former security overseer Nikolai “Yoda” Patrushev, during Putin’s post-inauguration reshuffle, was transferred from his post as secretary of the Security Council to serve as a special presidential aide. The sources, cautiously, seem to converge on a very serious possibility: “There seems to have been a breakdown in intel; they do not seem to have noticed the accumulation of troops at the Kursk border”. Another analyst though has offered a way more specific scenario, according to which a hawkish military faction, spread across the Ministry of Defense and the intel apparatus – and antagonistic to the new Minister of Defense Belousov, an economist – let the Ukrainian invasion proceed with two objectives in mind: set a trap for Kiev’s top enemy commanders and troops, who were diverted from the – collapsing – Donbass front; and put extra pressure on Putin to finally go for the head of the snake and finish off the war. This hawkish faction, incidentally, regards Chief of the General Staff Gerasimov as “totally incompetent”, in the words of one intel pro. There’s no smoking gun, but Gerasimov allegedly ignored several warnings about a Ukrainian buildup near the Kursk border. A retired intel pro is even more controversial. He complains that “traitors of Russia” actually “stripped three regions from troops to surrender them to the Ukrainians.” Now, these “traitors of Russia” will be able “to ‘exchange’ the city of Suzha for leaving the fake country of Ukraine and promote it as an inevitable solution.” Incidentally, only this Thursday Belousov started chairing a series of meetings to improve security in the “three regions” – Kursk, Belgorod and Bryansk…..

Under Trump, the U.S. government has slashed taxes without cutting spending, and in fact increased military spending, so now the government has to borrow money to get by. All the arguments on TV are saying, look at these government deficits, we can no longer support the US government spending money like this, they just want to create a sense of fear so that they can cut social welfare spending on ordinary people and keep spending on the military . That’s what Republicans say. They kept discussing the China threat theory, saying that we should protect Taiwan from mainland China and help Taiwan fight against China. This is the focus of the bipartisan debate on the debt ceiling negotiations. The U.S. government pays its debts, and the Treasury always has the capacity to pay them. The U.S. government simply doesn’t care about Congress’s proposal to cut the debt because Congress already supports all of their spending programs. So, if Biden says, we have to agree with the Republicans on cutting social welfare spending, because Biden and the Democratic leadership have essentially become Republicans….

After the Tories dumped the born-again Eurosceptic Thatcher, John Major rammed through the Maastricht treaty and embarked on the disastrous privatisation of our railways using EU directives – a model now set to be rolled out across the continent. Even now, the majority of David Cameron’s Tories will campaign for staying in the EU if we do get the referendum the electorate so clearly wants. And most of the left seems to be lining up alongside them. My union stood in the last European elections under the No2EU-Yes to Democracy coalition, which set out to give working people a voice that had been denied them by the political establishment. We also set out to challenge the rancid politics of the racist British National party, yet the BNP received far more media coverage. Today it is Ukip that is enjoying the media spotlight. Its rightwing Thatcherite rhetoric and assorted cranky hobby horses are a gift to a political establishment that seeks to project a narrow agenda of continued EU membership.

So it was something of an about-turn when the Treasury announced last month that, far from cutting the royal cloth to match the times, the monarchy would instead be getting a pay rise of about 45 per cent. The increase in public funding — from £86.3mn this year and next to £124.8mn in 2025-26 and £126mn in 2026-27 — is driven by one of the more contentious sources of royal income. The Crown Estate, which controls the monarchy’s legacy portfolio of assets, is set to earn more than £8bn up to 2031 from a boom in revenues from offshore wind projects. This is because since 1964 the estate owns the seabed up to 12 nautical miles from Britain’s coast. The royal household receives a percentage of the estate’s profits in an annual payment known as the sovereign grant. In January the King said that the monarchy would do without its share in the renewable energy bonanza for “the wider public good”, in what was widely seen as a smart move, heading off potential controversy at the start of his reign. Accordingly, trustees of the sovereign grant — prime minister Rishi Sunak, chancellor Jeremy Hunt and treasurer to the King Sir Michael Stevens — revised down the percentage of Crown Estate profits accruing to the monarchy from 25 to 12 per cent. But even after this, the King’s household income will shoot up in cash terms because of the overall increase in Crown Estate profits, the Treasury forecasts. This is the result of a radical change in the way the monarchy is funded that was introduced a decade ago by then-prime minister David Cameron. In 1760 George III surrendered hereditary revenues from the Crown Estate in return for a fixed annual payment. Between then and 2012, the monarchy was financed by a discretionary amount set by government and approved by MPs. But Cameron changed the formula so that public funding of the royal household came instead from 15 per cent of the profits of the Crown Estate, all of which previously accrued to the Treasury. The government also guaranteed that the grant would never be lower than the year before, by agreeing to make up the difference if the estate’s profits fell…

Coronation: Met expresses ‘regret’ over arresting six anti-monarchy protesters The Metropolitan Police has expressed “regret” over the arrests of six anti-monarchy protesters on Coronation day. Republic chief executive Graham Smith, who was among the group, said he has now received a personal apology from police officers. He said he did not accept the apology and would take legal action after no charges were brought against him. The Met also confirmed, external it had used a controversial new law to detain the group. Mr Smith said a chief inspector and two other officers visited his Reading home on Monday evening to issue the apology. He told PA news agency: “They seemed rather embarrassed to be honest. “I said for the record I won’t accept the apology. We have a lot of questions to answer and we will be taking action.” Mr Smith, who is from Bristol, earlier said he wanted a “full inquiry” into the “disgraceful episode”. The Met said a review found there was no proof the six protesters, who were detained when their vehicle was stopped near the procession route, were planning to “lock on”, a protesting tactic which is now banned. Recent changes to the law, passed last week, make it illegal for protesters to use equipment to secure themselves to things like railings. The Met said the group of six were detained after items were found in a vehicle which officers “had reasonable grounds to believe could be used as lock on devices”. But the force said it was “unable to prove intent to use them to lock on and disrupt the event”.

Of course it wouldn’t matter if it were free – the cost to our democracy would still be too high – but when the palace tells you it’s “value-for-money”, don’t believe them. We could get much better for far less. A symptom of a bigger problem The huge waste and extravagance of the monarchy is a symptom of the main problem: the palace is totally unaccountable and is able to operate with a far greater degree of secrecy than any other part of the state. It also clearly has considerably lobbying clout within government, which explains why the government hasn’t cracked down on royal spending. How is the monarchy funded?The monarchy has never been funded like other public bodies, which are usually set an annual budget based on what they actually need to spend. Until 2013, the costs of the monarchy – that’s the King in his role as head of state and the other working royals – were funded by a civil list payment and a number of separate grants covering travel, property maintenance, communications and other expenses. All these costs have now been rolled into one single annual payment called the “Sovereign Grant”. This has been set at 25% of surplus revenue from the crown estate – a publicly-owned property portfolio – resulting in a payment of £76.1m for 2017/2018. However, the Sovereign Grant is just one part of the total cost of the monarchy. The royal family’s security bill is picked up by the metropolitan police, for example, while the costs of royal visits are borne by local councils. Meanwhile, income from the Duchy of Lancaster and the Duchy of Cornwall – despite belonging to the nation – goes directly to the King, depriving the treasury of tens of millions of pounds every year. When all this hidden expenditure is included, the real cost of the monarchy to British taxpayers is likely to be around £345m annually.

Activist King Charles will bring down monarchy – Campaign group Republic has branded Prince Charles ‘a gift’ to the republican cause today following fresh revelations about his political ambitions. Republic’s CEO, Graham Smith said today: “Charles seems hell-bent on breaking the Britih constitution and interfering in the democratic process. That will lead to conflict that can only end with the abolition of the monarchy.” “Charles is a real danger to British democracy, and a great advert for ending the monarchy and electing our next head of state.” “If Charles speaks up on controversial issues when King he will come into conflict with public opinion and the elected government. UK mass surveillance found unlawful by Europe’s highest human rights court The Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights today ruled that the UK’s mass interception programmes, disclosed by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, unlawfully breached citizens’ rights to privacy and free expression. Campaign groups Big Brother Watch, Open Rights Group, English PEN computer science expert Dr. Constanze Kurz brought the challenge following Mr Snowden’s revelations in 2013, joined by Amnesty International, Liberty, Privacy International, the Bureau of Investigative Journalism and others. The judgment confirms definitively that the UK’s bulk interception practices were unlawful for decades, a finding that vindicates Mr Snowden’s whistleblowing. Documents provided by Mr Snowden revealed that the UK intelligence agency GCHQ was conducting “population-scale” interception, capturing the communications of millions of innocent people. The mass spying programmes included: In September 2018, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that the UK’s mass interception programmes breached the European Convention on Human Rights as they lacked adequate safeguards. The landmark judgment marked the Court’s first ruling on UK mass surveillance since Mr Snowden’s revelations. However, the campaign groups argued that the judgment did not go far enough in declaring the mass surveillance practices unlawful, pushing the case up to the Grand Chamber. End to end safeguards Today, the Grand Chamber judgment upheld that the bulk interception had unlawfully breached citizens’ privacy and free expression rights and elaborated on the need for “end to end safeguards” throughout surveillance practices to respect fundamental rights. The judgment means that bulk surveillance in the UK and across Europe will require prior independent or judicial authorisation, checking for adequate “end to end safeguards”, from the initial collection of data to the selection of items for storage. In July 2019, the Grand Chamber heard Big Brother Watch & others’ case against mass surveillance practices by the UK government. The hearing saw Government lawyers defending bulk surveillance practices and automated processing to sift through billions of intercepted calls, texts, emails and internet records. The UK Government even admitted that the court’s confidential emails could be scooped up by UK intelligence agencies. The Government admitted that the purpose of bulk surveillance “is not to search for the communications of identified targets” but to gather mass data and decide “who should be a target”.

Ten Palestine Action campaigners charged after ramming Bristol Elbit building with a van. Demo to support them in Bristol Saturday lunchtime. Three more charged over ram raid attack on Elbit Systems in Bristol Seven have already been charged and a demonstration of support for what are now being called ‘the Filton 10’ is planned in Bristol on Saturday Three more people have been named and charged in connection with an incident which saw pro-Palestine activists smash their way into a Bristol factory owned by an Israeli arms company. The three have all been charged with criminal damage and aggravated burglary and one has also been charged with violent disorder in connection with the action at defence technology firm Elbit Systems in Filton, north of Bristol, earlier this month. The three join seven others who have been charged following the action on August 6. They were all arrested and detained under anti-terrorism legislation and the CPS said it will submit to Westminster Magistrates Court later today (Friday) that the offences they are charged with ‘have a terrorist connection’. A demonstration in support of those charged has been scheduled for Saturday lunchtime in Bristol city centre. The latest charges bring the total number of people charged in connection with the incident to ten. The incident earlier this month saw activists from Palestine Action force their way into the Elbit Systems building and began smashing up equipment inside. For years, demonstrators have staged protests which block the entrances to the Bristol base of the Israeli defence firm, and occasionally have accessed the building’s roof, but the August 6 action was the most serious so far. The three charged overnight with criminal damage and aggravated burglary are: Ian Sanders, 45, from Regent Place, Royal Leamington Spa in Warwickshire; William Plastow, 33, of High Croft Avenue in Manchester and Madeline Norman, 29, from Wester Drylaw Drive in Edinburgh – she has also been charged with violent disorder. Despite happening in Filton, the investigation into the attack on Elbit Systems is being lead by Counter Terrorism Policing South East. Their spokesperson said: “The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) will be submitting to the court that these offences have a terrorist connection. “The charges are in connection with an incident which happened last Tuesday (6 August), where a group of people forced their way into the building of defence technology firm Elbit Systems UK, causing extensive damage. Employees of the company and two police officers were seriously assaulted,” they added.

The three join seven others charged with a range of offences including criminal damage and aggravated burglary, following the attack on Elbit Systems in the early hours of Tuesday, August 6. They are: Samuel Corner, 22, of Rock Hill, Georgeham in Devon, who is charged with violent disorder, GBH with intent and two counts of ABH; Leona Kamio, 28, from Clifden Road in Hackney, London, who is charged with violent disorder; Hannah Davidson, 51, from Calder Gardens in Edinburgh; Charlotte Head, 28, from White Ash Glade in Caerleon, near Newport, who is charged with violent disorder; Zoe Rogers, 20, from Selborne Road in Southgate, north London, who is charged with violent disorder; Jordan Devlin, 30, from Stoke Newington High Street in London, who is charged with violent disorder, and Fatama Rajwani, 20, from East Mitcham in South London, who is also charged with violent disorder. A woman from South Wales, who has not been named by police, was arrested in connection with the investigation, but has since been released with no further action taken by police. The seven already charged appeared in court earlier this week and have been remanded in custody. All those arrested following the action on August 6 were detained under the Terrorism Act, which gave police seven days to hold and question them before they had to be charged or released. There were demonstrations by pro-Palestine activists outside police stations across the country where those detained were being held in the past week. Within hours of the attack in Filton, Palestine Action released videos and photographs of the action they took at Elbit Systems. Afterwards, a photograph of the first six arrested and charged, calling them the ‘Filton 6’ earlier this week, as a fundraiser was launched to support their defence.

Gaza Al Jazeera’s Sanad verification agency has probed the details of Israel’s Saturday morning attack on Gaza City’s al-Tabin School, which killed more than 100 people, including women and children. The investigation determined the attack was “deliberately timed to cause maximum casualties”, with a “large number of displaced people deliberately targeted,” it said in a statement on Tuesday. To reach its findings, Sanad examined survivors’ testimonies, photos of the remnants of bombs used in the attack, images showing how the bombs penetrated the ceilings of the mosque attached to the school, and documentation of the explosion’s immediate aftermath. Based on the evidence, Sanad said Israel’s military fired the two guided missiles used in the attack to coincide with dawn prayers. The missiles “penetrated the mosque’s roof, passed through the first floor, where the women’s chapel is located, and exploded on the ground floor, where the men’s chapel is situated”, Sanad said in its report. The agency added that fragments of at least two shells used in this targeting were of the American GBU-39 SDB type, confirmed by weapons expert Trevor Ball. These type of shells are manufactured and exported to the Israeli army by the American company, Boeing. Regarding the location and time of impact of the two guided missiles, Sanad said, “It is clear that the choice was not random.” “The southern missile landed at the beginning of the chapel area as prayer was beginning, while the northern missile landed in the sleeping area and near the ablutions and bathrooms where the displaced people were preparing for prayer,” the agency said.
