BCfm’s weekly Politics Show presented by Tony Gosling with Irish Republican Labour activist Martin Summers continues online after being ‘rested due to the pandemic’ on 24 March 2020 by BCfm charity CEO Pat Hart. The Internet only BCfm Politics Show is now available 17:00-19:00 live on Fridays.

We are ready to go live on BCfm’s FM server remotely, awaiting the go-ahead from the managing editor. Initially we were told ‘In the light of government and Ofcom guidance’ his team decided ‘not to broadcast discussion or political shows’ that ‘might put the FM licence at risk’, because they ‘don’t want the burden of dealing with potential Ofcom complaints’. Now we’ve been told a wider ‘reorganisation’ is underway and this show may be allowed to return to FM in November 2020.

Bristol Energy scrapped – after costing Council £50m. Loss-making Bristol Energy’s boss earned £322k last year – The ex-boss of a council-owned energy firm that made a £32m loss was paid £322,960, city council accounts show. Managing director, Marek Majewicz, was paid a £228,081 salary last year and a £94,879 payout when he left. Bristol Mayor Marvin Rees earns £79,468 a year. Liberal Democrat Tim Kent said: “He was being paid over £200,000 a year to lose council taxpayer’s money at a rate of over £1m a month.” Mr Majewicz has not commented. Bristol City Council has declined to comment. Speaking on BBC Radio Bristol, Mr Kent added: “I will say one thing, he was consistent. Every month that that company has operated they’ve lost £1m of Bristol taxpayers’ money.” In the previous eight months, between August 2018 when Mr Majewicz first became a director of the company and March 2019, he took home a salary of £187,500, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

Special educational needs funding  – parents have to battle with the Council and take them to court. Parents’ fury as 190 children can’t return to special school in Bristol next week. The council have announced a £28.7m plan but it will take a year or more. – A total of 190 children with special needs across Bristol will not be returning to a specialist school next month – because the council has failed to provide enough SEND places for them. There are 13 children who have no place at all, while the other 177 will study in mainstream schools with specialist education, health and care plans (ECHP) drawn up to help them there. The children, who number the equivalent of a secondary school’s entire year intake, have special educational needs, but the shortfall in places means they will either be staying in mainstream schools, at home or remain in pre-schools. Furious parents have slammed the council, and described a council pledge that children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) would ‘be a priority’ as ‘a load of rubbish’. Bristol City Council has announced a £28.7 million plan to create more places for SEND children, which will include major redevelopments at two schools, as well as create additional special school places at a number of mainstream schools across the city….

Things will look and sound different. Points West presenter Alex Lovell said job cuts at the BBC in Bristol which will see only one presenter front the show for the first time ever were a ‘hard pill to swallow’. She or co-host David Garmston face redundancy or a job share as part of a raft of cuts at the corporation’s Whiteladies Road headquarters. As well as cutting the number of presenters for the BBC’s flagship evening news programme from two to one, there will also be one fewer presenting slots on the daytime BBC Radio Bristol too…

US B52 Bombers arrive at USAF Fairford – getting ready to ‘defend’ Belarus? US B-52 Bombers back in Britain: escalating nuclear tension. Six US Air Force B-52 bombers arrived at RAF Fairford on Saturday. Official sources describe it as ‘a long planned training mission’, carrying out theatre and flight training across Europe and Africa. But local news site GloucestershireLive describes it as a ‘surprise deployment’. Yesterday the much respected expert Hans Kristensen from the Federation of American Scientists posted a picture of all six bombers on twitter, describing it as ‘a pointed message to Russia’. He went on to note the ‘interesting timing of deployment’, given what’s happening in Belarus, observing that these exercises normally take place over Poland and the Baltic states – Belarus’s neighbours. Such a mobilisation raises serious concerns, not least because some B-52s are nuclear capable. To bring these into an already tense mix seems ill-advised to say the least but this appears to be what is happening: Kristensen points out that two of the B-52s in the image are nuclear-capable. General Jeff Harrigian, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa commander, describes the deployment thus: “B-52s are back at RAF Fairford, and will be operating across the theater in what will be a very active deployment. Our ability to quickly respond and assure allies and partners rests upon the fact that we are able to deploy our B-52s at a moment’s notice.”

Bahrain, Oman and Sudan all fail to follow UAE’s lead in normalising ties with Israel – US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo headed home on Thursday, marking the end of a Middle East tour aimed at pressing other Arab countries to follow the UAE’s recent move and normalise relations with Israel. The tour was less than successful, however, as stops in Bahrain, Oman and Sudan failed to produce any public commitments to mend relations with Israel, following the United Arab Emirates’ decision to do so earlier this month. “Met today with Omani Sultan Haitham bin Tarik Al-Said on the importance of building regional peace, stability, and prosperity through a united Gulf Cooperation Council,” Pompeo tweeted as he left Oman, the last stop on his itinerary. While Bahrain and Sudan have stated implicitly that they do not plan on following the UAE’s lead regarding Israel, Oman, one of the more neutral players in the Gulf, did not immediately comment on the subject after Pompeo’s visit. The official Oman News Agency did say that during the meeting, “aspects of the existing bilateral cooperation between the sultanate and the United States were reviewed within the framework of the strong relations that bind them,” AFP reported….

Top US body asks explosive questions on the origin of coronavirus – American health body asks if Covid-19 is linked to deaths of miners 8 years ago – The agency also asked if roadblocks were put around the Wuhan lab in October – The National Institutes of Health asked if lab had virus sample pre-outbreak – The US government’s leading health research body has raised a series of bombshell concerns over the origins of the coronavirus pandemic and the activities of a secretive Chinese laboratory that was investigating bat diseases. The National Institutes of Health has asked if Covid-19 was linked to the deaths of three miners eight years ago and questioned whether the high-security laboratory in Wuhan possessed samples of the virus prior to the pandemic’s outbreak late last year. The agency also demanded to know more about the ‘apparent disappearance’ of a scientist at the lab rumoured to be Patient Zero, and questioned if roadblocks were placed around the Wuhan Institute of Virology between October 14 and 19 last year.  – The NIH is Washington’s key medical research body, headed by Francis Collins, one of the world’s top geneticists. He was appointed by Barack Obama and reconfirmed in the post by Donald Trump. NIH raised the concerns in a letter last month to EcoHealth Alliance, a charity trying to get US support restored for research with its long-term collaborators at the Wuhan Institute of Virology into zoonotic diseases that cross from animals such as bats to humans. A $3.7 million (£2.8 million) grant to the charity – headed by British scientist Peter Daszak – was ended after The Mail on Sunday disclosed that the US was funding the controversial Chinese laboratory at the centre of global scrutiny….

New mutation of Covid 19 – New mutation of the coronavirus ‘may be a GOOD thing’: Strain common in Europe, America and parts of Asia is more infectious but less deadly, expert claims – Mutated strain D614G seems to be more infectious but less deadly than original  – Top expert says ‘maybe that’s a good thing’ as it could lower COVID-19 deaths – Dr Paul Tambyah said most viruses tend to become less virulent as they mutate – A strain of the coronavirus thriving in Europe, the US and parts of Asia has a specific mutation which makes the virus more infectious but less deadly, an expert believes. The variation in the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the agent which causes Covid-19, is called D614G. Paul Tambyah, senior consultant at the National University of Singapore and president-elect of the International Society of Infectious Diseases, said evidence suggests the proliferation of the D614G mutation in some parts of the world has coincided with a drop in death rates, suggesting it is less lethal. ‘Maybe that’s a good thing to have a virus that is more infectious but less deadly,’ Dr Tambyah told Reuters. – Herd immunity against Covid-19 could be closer than scientists first thought and as little as 10 per cent of people may need to be infected for the virus to fizzle out, experts say. It means pockets of London and New York and countries like India may already be immune to the life-threatening disease, should a second wave hit. Tambyah said most viruses tend to become less virulent as they mutate…

David Livingstone, author of ‘The Dying God: The hidden history of Western civilisation’, discussing the history of Kabbalah, Biblical Magi and hermetiscism.
