She was, of course, many things: a formidable parliamentarian, a woman of profound Christian faith and conviction, an accomplished author and broadcaster and someone who never sought the comfort of fashionable opinion. She spoke her mind, often to the irritation of opponents and sometimes even allies. Yet, whether one agreed with her or not, there was never any doubt about the sincerity of her beliefs.” “It is easy in the days following her death to celebrate those qualities in general terms. I remember them for a far more personal reason. When I became caught up in the grotesque injustice of Operation Midland, much of public life fell silent. Allegations that would later be exposed as heinous lies were treated as established fact. My reputation, painstakingly built over decades, was destroyed almost overnight. I lost my home, my livelihood and, for a time, I thought my entire life would be extinguished. Many people who knew me, and many who privately doubted what was unfolding, chose discretion over courage. Bristol’s LTN survives crunch vote as critics say ‘it’s an absolute joke’ The city council voted to make the scheme permanent Bristol Live readers are divided on the news that the controversial East Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood is a step closer to becoming permanent after councillors voted to back the scheme, despite fierce opposition from some residents. Bristol City Council’s transport policy committee approved a £10 million business case, including money already committed to the project, by five votes to four. The proposal now goes to West of England Mayor Helen Godwin, who must decide whether to release £6.4 million in funding. Hundreds of people commented ahead of the meeting. While most supported the scheme, many warned it had caused congestion, longer journeys and problems for disabled residents. Supporters argued the project has made residential streets quieter and safer, with more people walking, cycling and using public transport. Haydn Gill told councillors: ‘The more we rely on cars without viable alternatives to driving, the more oil is bought and burned. This might be a small scheme, but east Bristol is fighting back.’ Opponents said the road closures have made daily life harder for people who rely on cars. Brislington dad ‘lucky to be alive’ launches search for mystery woman who saved him from drowning Bristol Rovers’ Paul Raynor on Josh McEachran’s and Taylor Moore’s absence from pre-season so far Sue Hughes said: ‘For residents with chronic pain and severe mobility impairments, a car is an essential medical aid, not a luxury. Road closures drastically increase journey times.’ The trial introduced planters, bollards and bus gates across Barton Hill, Redfield and St George to discourage through traffic and encourage walking, cycling and public transport. Critics say it has simply shifted congestion onto surrounding roads, including Crews Hole Road and Troopers Hill Road. Green councillors, backed by Liberal Democrat Nicholas Coombes, voted in favour, saying the scheme has improved road safety and public health. Labour and Conservative members opposed it, arguing it has divided communities, although they welcomed the proposed changes. The final decision now rests with West of England Mayor Helen Godwin, who is awaiting the findings of an independent review before deciding whether to release the funding. Stitched Up in Barton Hill. Bristol City Council, the EBLN vote, and the case for Bristol CIC. You’re not a shareholder. You’re not even a customer. A customer can leave. by John Langley There’s a planter on a road in Barton Hill. It’s been there two years. It isn’t going anywhere. Nobody in that street chose it, exactly. It just arrived, the way weather arrives. And now it’s staying, the way weather doesn’t ask permission either. Thursday night, nine people in a committee room made that official. Behind them sat hundreds of statements from residents — heartfelt, furious, and in the end, decorative. Here’s the thing nobody said out loud: the decision was made long before the vote. The vote was just the bit where everyone got to pretend they’d been listened to. That’s not cynicism. That’s the shape of the thing. The East Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood was funded and built £1.65m over budget before residents ever got a binding vote on whether it should continue. The 5-4 result at the Transport & Connectivity Policy Committee wasn’t democracy weighing the evidence. It was democracy being wheeled out, after the fact, to sign the guestbook on its way past a decision the spending had already made. Councils call this “consultation.” Everyone else calls it a receipt. However — and here’s where it stops being one bad Thursday and starts being something worse — this isn’t a story about a planter. It’s a story about a council that was never built to answer to the people paying for it. And a structure that isn’t built to answer to you doesn’t need to lie to you. It just needs to outlast your attention span. The shareholder test: what Bristol City Council actually owes you. Try this. If Bristol City Council were a company and you were a shareholder, what would you actually be owed? A vote on the board. Audited accounts. A binding say over who runs the thing with your money. Real oversight — not a suggestion box, not a “have your say” form that closes the moment the decision’s already banked. Council tax payers get none of it. Council tax funds just under half of Bristol’s £634m General Fund — and you hold none of a shareholder’s rights over a penny of it. Not the EBLN business case. Not the overspend. Not the officers whose spending had, in effect, decided the outcome months before the room that supposedly decided it. Compare that to Finland — a country that taxes people harder than almost anywhere on earth and tops the World Happiness Report for the ninth year running while doing it. The lesson isn’t that tax makes people happy. It’s that trust comes first, and tax tolerance follows it, never the other way round. Bristol hasn’t earned a fraction of that. Thursday just spent two years and £1.65m proving it again — slowly, in public, with minutes taken. WECA: the same failure, one desk further away. Widen the lens. It gets worse. The West of England Combined Authority — the body that actually decides whether EBLN gets built, since Mayor Helen Godwin holds the funding veto — was issued a formal best-value notice in 2024, after auditors found troubling relationships among WECA’s leadership and hundreds of thousands overspent on salaries in a single year. Green Party Councillor for St George West, Bristol My personal assessment of East Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood trial scheme data (January 2026) Posted on January 2, 2026 by Robert Jesse Telford/Bryher This is my attempt to summarise and assess the monitoring report for the East Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood trial scheme. Before I summarise the data, let’s restate the aims of the scheme as defined in the monitoring strategy: to reduce traffic cutting through the Liveable Neighbourhood to boost active travel and public transport use to not significantly impact nearby roads So let’s dig into the data and what it says. The volume of traffic has reduced and has not significantly impacted nearby (external/boundary) roads: On internal and external (boundary) roads, the volume of all motorised vehicles has gone down by 26 per cent on weekdays and by 21 per cent on weekends. On internal roads the decrease is 77 per cent on weekdays and 72 per cent on weekends. On external roads the decrease is 6 per cent on weekdays and 5 per cent on weekends. Walking has been boosted: Walking increased by 7 per cent on weekdays and 5 per cent on weekends. Cycling has been boosted: Cycling volumes increased overall by 22 per cent on weekdays but did not go up overall at weekends. The volume of cycling on internal roads increased by 39 per cent on weekdays and 13 per cent on weekends, and it went up on external roads by 4 per cent on weekdays and went down by 12 per cent on external roads on weekends. Use of the Wesley Way cycle route increased by 60 per cent on weekdays and 24 per cent on weekends. Public transport has been boosted: The 5 and 16 buses (which run mainly through the EBLN area) have increased their patronage by 116% and all buses (41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 5, 16) which run through EBLN and boundary roads (e.g. Church Road) have seen a 5% increase in ridership. In summary, the data shows that the trial scheme has achieved its aims in each of the three categories. This clearly suggests that simply removing the scheme in its entirety would not be a wise course of action (if you believe the scheme aims are desirable).
Melissa Topping, disabled campaigner against EBLN has had her vehicle sabotaged, the steering boot slashed which could easily cause her to have an accident. Green supporter takes down their complaint notices. Melissa’s van steering boot has been slashed with a knife so fluid has leaked out and steering has seized. This is extremely dangerous so would potentially be a ramped up charge from criminal damage for anyone prosecuted for the crime. I wonder if the police will be bothered to chase up this potentially politically motivated crime or will they simply not bother? ‘Locked in and blocked in’ by liveable neighbourhood A Barton Hill resident claims that her independence has been taken away due to the new infrastructure installed around her home as part of the East Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood trial. Melissa Topping suffers from multiple disabilities which have severely affected her over the years. Since 2010, she has been using a wheelchair and mobility scooter to access areas that she cannot on foot. A keen traveller, Melissa, 55, often loads her wheelchair and mobility scooter in her customised van to visit areas that she would not be able to otherwise. A new bus gate on Avonvale Road, however, now limits Melissa’s access to her own home on Victoria Avenue. While other traffic could divert through Byron Street, Melissa says it is too risky for her large van to be driven through the narrow street as it could hit parked cars. On a recent morning, Melissa told Bristol24/7 that her van “is everything to me”. She said: “Being able to get away with a little bit of independence, even if that is just occasionally, that’s everything. That’s the only thing that’s brought me out of severe depression with being disabled.” Melissa claims that the new liveable neighbourhood infrastructure means that larger emergency service vehicles, or any trader with a larger van, cannot access several roads across Barton Hill, Redfield and St George. But Bristol City Council say “the whole area will be accessible by emergency services although some routes may change depending on the location of modal filters” and that their team “will continue to engage with emergency services on the detailed design of the trial scheme”. Bristol24/7 has seen photos of paramedics parking their ambulances and running to where they need to get to, then running back and forth to their vehicle to retrieve equipment. We have also been sent a message from one firefighter who lives within the EBLN trial area saying “the blocked off roads could actually impact response times where seconds/minutes are the difference between rescuing someone or not”. The firefighter added: “I appreciate we can go a different route (when we eventually understand all the closures), but the amount of traffic to navigate will slow the response time.”…

Following the war, the site was used temporarily as a car park before land being leased to the Bank of England and Norwich Union Insurance company for office buildings in 1962/63. Bank of England house featured deep level vaults for bullion storage and front of house services for customers. In the mid-1970s, an additional building, Bank House, was built alongside the Bank of England House. Both Norwich Union & Bank of England had vacated their buildings in the 1990s. Lloyds banking group continued to operate in the Bank House before finally consolidating multiple Bristol offices in Oct 2020. Over the years that the buildings have remained vacant, they have been used for various TV & Film productions including Casualty, Skins, Showtrial & The Outlaws.
The story of St Mary le Port: how finance capital got what it wanted in the historic heart of Bristol Date: February 26, 2024Author: Joe Banks Two significant things are set to happen in Bristol in 2024: Mayor Marvin Rees departs City Hall in May and construction work will begin on a major new development at the historic heart of the city. If one of the enduring legacies of Rees’ time in office will be a wave of crass buildings across the city, the imminent scheme at St Mary le Port may well stand as the most totemic example. The office block development was approved by a council planning committee in December 2021, got held up by an unsuccessful appeal to the Secretary of State from the Bristol Civic Society, and finally received planning permission in September 2022. Nothing has happened on site yet but I’ve been assured by the developer’s PR consultants that work will start this year. The story of its journey through the planning system exposes many of the features of the current planning and development regime that has incited recent public anger: political interference from the Mayor’s Office, disdain for transparency and due process, the sidelining of the council’s own placemaking specialists, and the green light given to developers to create bland, poorly designed places. The remains of St Mary le Port church sit on the western edge of Castle Park, surrounded by three derelict office buildings from the 1960s and 70s. This is where the city began, by the crossing of the Avon where Bristol Bridge stands today. The area around the ancient crossroads of High Street, Wine Street, Broad Street and Corn Street was the heart of the city from its early beginnings in late Saxon times to the devastation of the Second World War. The Bristol Blitz of November 1940 saw the entire quarter of tightly-packed streets on the eastern side, then the city’s bustling shopping and entertainment district, sent up in flames. What little survived was later demolished and the area was turned into Castle Park in the late 1970s. Directly to the west of St Mary le Port – left with only its church tower standing after the bombing – is what remains of the Old City and its dense concentration of Georgian and Victorian listed buildings. As you currently look across the site from Castle Park you see the grouping of historic churches, with the spires and towers of St Nicholas, All Saints, Christ Church and St Mary le Port forming a distinctive skyline, still visible from vantage points across the city. Though the site has proved difficult to re-develop since the unloved post-war buildings have fallen into disuse, it’s one you would expect the city authorities to treat with diligence, care and respect. But a close look at how the planning process unfolded for St Mary le Port shows a troubling carelessness, as well as cynical efforts to manipulate the planning system in line with developer demands, with the judgements of specialist council officers trampled over in order to “get stuff done”. This is a breakdown in the firewall that is supposed to exist between the Executive and the Local Planning Authority around planning decisions, stipulated in planning guidance and law. And the story also illustrates a breakdown around the accountability of public officials and politicians, along with the legibility of their roles within a supposedly democratic system…
Murdered Reform UK Justice spokesperson Ann Widdecombe makes a solid case against women only or ‘equal number’ lists for political roles. Liz Truss on a system within politics that keeps people in line. Ms Widdecombe has held the position of Shadow Secretary of State for Health from 1998 to 1999 and the position of Shadow Home Secretary from 1999 to 2001. When I mentioned the dreaded words: political shortlists for women, I elicited an explosive response: “Demeaning, insulting and patronising!” she argues vehemently. “If you start to select people not on the basis of their ability, but of their gender, then inevitably it results in a diminution of standing.” Her advice to aspiring young female politicians: “don’t make an issue of the fact that you’re a woman. I’m just an MP that happens to be a woman.” And she’s anything but boring. At times it feels rather like talking to a bulldog on the end of a leash. If you’re friendly and polite to her, she’ll wag her tail at you. But get on the wrong side of her and what she believes, and you may come away badly bruised. It’s her abrupt charm, I suppose. Once you get beyond the hard shell, you realise that Ann Widdecombe is actually a softie – even if a principled and honest one! What of her values? “I think if you’re true to your values you can manage most things,” she says. “It’s only when you equivocate and prevaricate, that you really get the problems. As long as you know what you believe in and that’s what you’re working towards, then it’s fine.” “Why did you become a Roman Catholic?” I asked her. “When I looked at the churches from afar, the Anglican Church always seemed to be compromising on everything – just blowing about with every fad and fashion.” “Catholicism” on the other hand “seemed to be insisting on two thousand years of continuous truth and therefore I was much more attracted to it.” But I wondered what a principled politician such as Ann Widdecome had to say about honesty in politics? “I think pure honesty is very difficult for any politician for the very simple and straightforward reason that you have to accept collective responsibility. Especially if you’re either a minster or a front bench spokesman: you speak for the party. People understand that.” I interjected, and pointed out that some people are suspicious of collective responsibility in the wake of the expenses scandal. “Well then you shouldn’t be concerned,” she says. “People have this notion that collective responsibility is saying what you don’t think. In fact, it’s simply explaining a government’s position.” Other people think “that politics is about these huge clashes between your beliefs and your party. And yes those clashes do occur, but they’re not the norm.” Following that, I brought up the subject of recent equality legislation. Widdecombe claims that “there has been a massive erosion of individual conscience and you’re now obliged to facilitate the things that you believe should not happen.” Take B&B owners for instance. “If they refuse to supply double rooms to married couples, and providing they apply that to heterosexual couples, that to me is not discrimination. But the law says it is!” In a passionate response she says she thinks “it’s an erosion of the understanding of the Christian conscience.” “Once you say that there is nothing unique about the institution of marriage, then that is a blow against the family and frankly it’s not unique to civil partnerships but it’s another nail in the coffin of the family. Saying that, there were nails there before.” So, what’s next for this formidable woman? “I’m retiring to the West Country and I’m going to write more” she says. When I asked her why she thought an Act of Fear was her favourite book, she was perfectly candid: as always. “Because I think it’s the best written…. and really because it got the most fan mail.”
Support for IRGC banned. UK Labour government rams through authoritarian National Security Bill The Labour government’s National Security (State Threats) Bill passed all its stages in the House of Commons on July 6, becoming law two days later. It represents one of the most far-reaching attacks on democratic rights and press freedom in modern British history. The Bill is a weapon against political protest, journalism and humanitarian work, and gives the state the means to prosecute those who oppose its wars. Its purpose is to intimidate and suppress political dissent and critical journalism by depicting this as a threat to national security. The Commons passed the Bill unopposed after agreeing to six amendments proposed by the House of Lords supposedly meant to safeguard against its extraordinary attacks on press freedoms and the activities of NGOs, without addressing the equally chilling impact on anti-war and anti-genocide protests. Security Minister Angela Eagle spun the government’s false narrative that it was aimed at tackling threats “predominantly, though not exclusively, from three countries: Russia, China and Iran”. The Bill’s preamble stated it was to make “provision for the designation of bodies involved in foreign power threat activity; to create offences relating to bodies designated under this Act; and for connected purposes.” The list of “bodies” designated as “involved in foreign power threat activity” can be extended almost at will by the Home Secretary. Clause 2 of the National Security (State Threats) Bill inserts new sections 17A–17C into the National Security Act 2023, creating offences of supporting a designated body (s.17A), assisting a designated body (s.17B), and obtaining material benefits from a designated body (s.17C).From the moment a body is designated, any person deemed to “support,” “assist” or “obtain material benefits” from it faces up to 14 years in prison per offence. To “obtain material benefits” can include even receiving information. Assisting a designated body is an offence “if the person—(a) engages in conduct of any kind, and (b) intends that conduct to materially assist a designated body in carrying out UK-related activities.” Such conduct “includes providing, or providing access to, information, goods, services or financial benefits (whether directly or indirectly).” The legal checks placed on the sweeping power are so limited as to be worthless, with barely any oversight even by Parliament’s intelligence committee and bypassing the judiciary altogether, leaving the courts only with the power to review actions, not authorise them. The legislation is the state’s answer to growing anti-war sentiment. Over the past two years—as part of a mass movement internationally—more than 30 mass anti-war demonstrations have mobilised in London, and many more in other cities across Britain, opposing the complicity of successive Conservative and Labour governments in Israel’s genocide in Gaza. The marches have been routinely condemned by senior Tory and Labour figures as “hate marches” and “antisemitic”….

US and Israel war crimes – US bombing Iran. Warren Thornton on white phosphorus bomb and the terrible harms it does. The Israeli military has deployed white phosphorus, an incendiary substance that can be extremely harmful, over populated areas in Lebanon in its battle against Hezbollah, according to experts, aid groups and visual evidence collected by The New York Times. Distinctive smoke trails from this type of munition were seen as recently as May 30 in Nabatieh, a city of roughly 40,000, in social media footage verified by The Times, which was filmed as Israeli forces captured Beaufort Castle, a landmark in the area. Other verified footage showed that white phosphorus had been used in the vicinity of the coastal city of Tyre, as well as near three small towns – Qlayaa, Khiam and Yohmor – in the months since fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed militant group, began again in March. The latest fighting erupted after Hezbollah fired rockets into northern Israel, following joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran. Once exposed to air, white phosphorus spontaneously ignites and is exceptionally difficult to extinguish. Often deployed by militaries to create fires and smoke screens during combat, white phosphorus is not illegal in itself, but deploying it deliberately against civilians or in an area populated by civilians violates the international laws of war. Human rights advocates have raised concerns that civilians have been affected by the Israeli military’s use of it. Israel denies using the substance in violation of those laws. It is not clear for what purpose the Israeli military used white phosphorus in these incidents. The Times asked the Israeli military questions about its use of white phosphorus in Nabatieh, Qlayaa, Khiam and Tyre in four specific instances and provided the coordinates for those incidents. The Israeli military had no comment on those incidents. The Times also asked the military about its internal guidelines for the usage of white phosphorus. “I.D.F. procedures require that such shells are not used in densely populated areas, subject to certain exceptions. This complies and goes beyond the requirements of international law,” it said in a statement. Israel uses American-made 155-millimeter M825A1 artillery projectiles that contain 116 felt wedges, in the shape of pizza slices, coated with white phosphorous. They are designed to create five to 10 minutes of dense white smoke, providing cover to fighters. The shells can be fuzed to break apart and dispense their cargo midair, which will spread their incendiary effect over a wide area. That can be used to create a smoke screen, but also will cause fires on the ground wherever the wedges land. The munitions can also be set to rupture on impact – to create a single fire, that militaries use as a visual marker to guide additional strikes. Munitions experts who analyzed recent footage from news agencies as well as social media posts concluded that the imagery showed artillery projectiles bursting midair in Lebanon, releasing streams of burning white phosphorous below – consistent with previous Israeli uses of American M825A1 shells. In response to questions by The Times, the Israeli military said that, “the primary smoke-screen shells used by the I.D.F. do not contain white phosphorus.” “Like many Western militaries,” the statement added, “the I.D.F. also possesses smoke-screen shells that include white phosphorous that are legal under international law. These shells are used by the I.D.F. for creating smoke screens and not for targeting or causing fires and are not defined under law as incendiary weapons.” There are currently no publicly available statistics about the Israeli military’s use of other smoke-screen shells. Israel’s use of white phosphorus News agency video filmed on March 27 shows these munitions dispersing over an area near Tyre, a large city in the south of The substance is “cheap, plentiful and pretty good at what it’s used for,” said N.R. Jenzen-Jones, the director of Armament Research Services, a private intelligence consultancy based in Australia that tracks arms and munitions. Israel’s deployment of white phosphorus in populated areas has brought about scrutiny in the past. A 2024 report by Human Rights Watch documented its widespread use in Lebanon and questioned its necessity, pointing out that there were safer alternatives, such as the M150 shells, which the Israeli military reportedly used in 2024.

War reaches sports: US bombing targets Iran’s largest sports complex The repercussions of the military conflict in Iran have extended to the sports sector, after the Azadi Stadium complex, one of Tehran’s most prominent sports landmarks, was bombed. The Iranian news agency reported that the US-Israeli bombing targeted the area surrounding the sports complex, resulting in the destruction of its indoor arena, which has a capacity of approximately 12,000 spectators. In addition, several other sports facilities within the complex sustained damage. The agency added that some facilities surrounding the Olympic swimming pool were also damaged by the explosion, while circulating images showed the extent of the destruction. Azadi Stadium is considered the largest stadium in Iran and one of the most famous stadiums in Asia. It regularly hosts matches of the Iranian national team and many major sporting events, with a capacity of approximately 78,000 spectators. Reports indicate that the damage recorded so far is concentrated in facilities within the sports complex, without confirmation of direct damage to the main football stadium. This marks the first time sports facilities have been targeted during the US-Israeli war in Iran, which has entered its second week. The war has cast a shadow over the sporting scene, with matches being postponed in Asia and football leagues suspended in Qatar, Kuwait, and Jordan. There are also indications that Qatar may be forced to cancel the international tournament scheduled to be held in Doha at the end of March, which includes the national teams of Argentina, Spain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Serbia, less than 100 days before the start of the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Whereas the police have arrested those holding signs under section 13 of the Terrorism Act, an offence which is tried in the Magistrates Court, and has a maximum sentence of 6 months imprisonment, inviting others to support a proscribed organisation is an offence under section 12 of the Act, meaning trial by jury and a maximum sentence of 14 years imprisonment. On Friday, Defend Our Juries wrote to the Met Commissioner, Sir Mark Rowley, explaining why Defend Our Juries considers the police to be suitable potential recruits to Palestine Action: “Many of your officers are sincerely committed to saving lives and upholding the law. The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) filed a time-sensitive motion in the Eastern District of Virginia’s federal court on behalf of journalist Max Blumenthal, seeking the immediate return of two smartphones unlawfully seized and retained by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The motion argues that CBP’s warrantless seizure and continued retention of Blumenthal’s phones violate the First and Fourth Amendments and the Privacy Protection Act. It seeks the immediate return of both devices and all information or copies obtained from them under Federal Rule of Criminal Procedure 41(g), along with an expedited hearing because the seizure is interfering with Blumenthal’s work, chilling his reporting, and threatening the confidentiality of his sources and unpublished reporting. But it’s Neill’s performance that makes the show ridiculously watchable, even when the plots are convoluted or the social mores of the 1980s and the early 1900s collide awkwardly. In nearly every scene, Neill’s demeanor is one of quiet confidence and danger. He’s portrayed initially as a Bond-esque cad, but any sexism to the character is mostly connected to the period of time, rather than a misguided celebration of chauvinism. In short, as Reilly, Neill feels like a more ethical James Bond, which again, will call to mind, in many episodes, what an Indiana Jones TV might have looked like. Neill’s performance in Ace of Spies was almost certainly a factor in his being among several actors tapped to replace Roger Moore as James Bond just a few years later. Ace of Spies concluded in 1983, and the final Moore Bond film, A View to a Kill, was released in 1985. In 1986, Neill auditioned to play Bond for the film that would become 1987’s The Living Daylights, though eventually the part went to Timothy Dalton. Like many Bond hopefuls, Neill auditioned by performing a version of a scene made famous by Sean Connery in 1963, in which Bond enters his hotel to find Tatiana Romanova in his bed, waiting for him. Like another future Bond, Pierce Brosnan, Neill is originally from Ireland, having been born in Omagh, County Tyrone, in Northern Ireland in 1947. Though his mother was Irish, Neill’s father was from New Zealand, and he spent much of his early years in that country. In Ace of Spies, Neill’s cosmopolitan and global background in real life certainly adds to the flavor of the character of Reilly, a man who isn’t really from one place and seems to have multiple allegiances. If you’re looking for an underrated gem from the career of Sam Neill, Ace of Spies will give you everything you could hope for: a great 1980s historical drama with high production values, several complex espionage plots, and Sam Neill looking sauve as hell through all of it.

Ansarallah Vows to Block Saudi Access to Bab al-Mandeb After Strikes on Sana’a The first Saudi airstrikes against Ansarallah in four years threaten to upend their tenuous ceasefire, just as the truce between the U.S. and Iran is crumbling over the Strait of Hormuz. A leading official from Yemen’s Ansarallah vowed that the group would block Saudi access to the Bab al-Mandab strait—a vital bottleneck connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean—in response to strikes on Sana’a airport on Monday that were blamed on Saudi Arabia. The move would exacerbate the economic impact of the ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz, particularly on Asian markets currently relying on Saudi crude exports through the Red Sea. Ansarallah claimed on Monday night to have launched retaliatory strikes with ballistic missiles and drones hitting Abha airport in Saudi Arabia. But the Ansarallah official, Mohammed al-Bukhaiti, told Drop Site News that the strikes were “merely one of the initial steps in a broader escalation…we will focus on intensifying our military operations,” adding that “the Bab al-Mandab strait is a legitimate leverage tool.” Ansarallah leader Abdulmalek al-Houthi added to the threats in a speech on Thursday, saying that “all Saudi oil facilities and vital installations” were targets. A statement on Wednesday by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) also supported Ansarallah’s pledge, warning that other oil and gas export routes, in addition to the Strait of Hormuz, could be closed to the U.S. and its allies. It remained unclear whether Ansarallah would in fact carry out the threat to close off the vital waterway to Saudi Arabia, yet the latest developments have ushered in a dangerous game of brinkmanship. The strikes on Sana’a airport were the first attack by Saudi Arabia against Ansarallah, also known as the Houthis, since 2022. The attack and retaliatory missile and drone launches by the Houthis into Saudi Arabia, along with the vows of further escalation, threaten to upend a four-year-long tenuous ceasefire just as the truce between the U.S. and Iran is crumbling over access through the Strait of Hormuz. The Saudi-backed, internationally recognized Yemeni government, largely based in Riyadh, claimed responsibility for the strikes on Sana’a airport on Monday saying they aimed to prevent the landing of an inbound Iranian flight carrying an Ansarallah delegation returning from Tehran for the funeral of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei who was assassinated by a U.S.-Israeli strike in March. At least four individual strikes hit the runway shortly after a UN humanitarian air service flight departed from Sana’a. The Iranian Mahan Air passenger plane diverted and later landed safely at Ansarallah-controlled Hodeidah airport on Yemen’s Red Sea coast. In response, Ansarallah’s military spokesman Yahya Saree accused Saudi Arabia of being behind the strikes and declared that the attack “ended the de-escalation phase,” threatening “consequences.” The reported strikes claimed by Ansarallah on Abha airport in Saudi Arabia, around 100 kilometers from Yemen’s northern border, soon followed. Flights to and from Abha were cancelled late Monday and Tuesday morning….

Concern over ‘$500m upgrade’ at RAF Fairford used by US bombers An MP has expressed concerns over plans for a reported ‘$500 million investment’ in an RAF airbase used by US bombers. RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire has been at the centre of heavy traffic of US bombers since March, immediately following the outbreak of the America-Iran war. US bombers such as B-52s and B-1s have become a frequent sight over the skies of Swindon and north Wiltshire, and the perimeter of the fence proving a busy location for plane spotters. Earlier this month local MP Roz Savage has said the local community has experienced “significant disruption from increased activity”, and approached the government over concerns for “the safety of my constituents living in the surrounding areas”. Dr Savage’s concerns also revolved around reports that there is to be further US investment at the airbase. According to reporting by the Guardian newspaper, nearly 500 million US dollars is to be spent at the airbase, to complete a new hangar complex and renovate houses to accommodate “a significant influx of aircrew.” In a letter addressed to Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis, Liberal Democrat Ms Savage wrote that since the outbreak of the war with Iran, she has “consistently” raised concerns about the safety of her constituents and transparency over the use of UK bases. She added that the disruption has been felt “both in terms of noise levels and the impact to the local economy.” Dr Savage wrote: “It is therefore important that any expansion of RAF Fairford fully considers the impact on the surrounding community.” She also said there isa “need for greater transparency and parliamentary scrutiny of the use of UK military bases by the United States”. She also urged Mr Jarvis to confirm what discussions had taken place with the US, and what assessments had been made regarding the impact on her constituents living near the airbase….

But even after half an hour of dense rhetoric, it is still not especially clear what this is. Burnham, who will become prime minister on Monday after this formal party coronation, is a politician who runs largely on vibes, and that was the driving force of his address to the Labour faithful in central London. The second striking point was how much Burnham’s themes borrowed from populism, albeit lightly, and infused with togetherness rather than Nigel Farage’s division and anger. A long section harking back to the fate of steelworks, mines and shipyards almost echoed Reform’s laments about deindustrialisation, even if Burnham’s response is to pledge support to the fate of communities left behind by this, rather than vainly promise a new era of manual labour. Similarly, there were numerous references to football, a subject Burnham trots out on an almost reflex basis to emphasise his man-of-the-people credentials, much as Farage does with pubs and pints. On the other side of the ideological divide, Burnham’s references to hope, and particularly the closing line – “That’s my mission as your new leader, to bring back hope. I believe in all of you, and I am confident we can do it” – could have been spoken by Zack Polanski, pioneer of his own brand of left-leaning populism. February 2019 – Ofcom complaint result: UKLFI exposed as creation of Israeli foreign ministry – Bristol Post article: BCfm cleared after being reported to Ofcom for anti-semitic conspiracy theories – It could have resulted in BCfm radio station being shut down if the complaint was upheld Tony Gosling reported to Ofcom by UK Lawyers for Israel after being accused of anti-semitism A Bristol radio station, which had one of its programmes reported for anti-semitism and racism has been cleared by Ofcom. The radio regulatory body received a complaint from “UK Lawyers for Israel’ over a show on BCfm radio, hosted by investigative journalist Tony Gosling. The weekly politics show, on the popular community radio station based in Easton, was reported for several allegations on a show which aired on November 23. Tony Gosling, who was a former BBC journalist between 1989 and 1993, has been producing and presenting ‘The Tony Gosling Politics’ show every week on BCFM radio for 11 years. They have released a statement which reads: “Whilst we are supportive of all our volunteer presenters, The Tony Gosling Politics Show only represents approximately ten percent of our political output content wise, and less than two per cent of our entire weekly output.” Mr Gosling’s programme looks at local politics and he interviews a range of councillors and MPs in the city. The show is also perhaps more well known for its alternative look at international politics, and he has a cult following online from across the world. Mr Gosling has made regular appearances on national media including the politics show with Andrew Neil on BBC One, and international channels such as Russia Today, Channel1 Russia, NTV, and recently for both Turkish and Lebanon TV.
November 2012 – Tony gets death threats on the phone from the Jewish Defence League – ‘you’re a dead man walking’ – a man calls him and Tony records the call. Audio of UK Jewish Defence League (JDL) death threat against British journalist Tony Gosling (2012) – Avon and Somerset police Special Branch investigate, trace the caller, and after six months report to Tony that the individual has been served a caution that they will proceed with a prosecution for harassment under the 1861 offences against the person act. Seems pretty clear this death threat was issued alongside the lies, copied below, which were published on their blog by London based UK JDL in November 2012. Firstly Tony Gosling is not a ‘homophobe’. That accusation was first made in an article published by the ‘Harry’s Place’ blog, penned by Zionist David Toube and propelled by him anonymously into Private Eye in 2008. It refers to Gosling’s criticism of senior teachers at Bannerman Road Primary school in Bristol who used homosexual early learning picture books against the express wishes of the parent governors. His criticism was about the deception by teaching staff not because of the homosexual content of the books. Secondly, if you follow the JDL link you’ll find what Tony Gosling actually says about the ‘Protocols Of The Learned Elders Of Zion’ says “…I don’t think there is much doubt that the Protocols are fake…” Thirdly he is not a member of Bristol Palestine Solidarity Campaign and has never been to any of their meetings.
Autumn 2014 – Tony’s documentary production and distribution business shut down by its bank. Our thriving Co-op business bank account ordered closed for undisclosed reasons. Tony Gosling and Ben Edwards founded i-Contact Video Network to distribute documentaries on VHS video and DVD and to make their own documentaries as well as attend news events and sell video footage to TV news channels. Amongst the films we distributed were Operation Solstice, Coconut Revolution, Mark Purdey and Organophosphates, McLibel, 9/11 In Plane Site, Ludicrous Diversion and The Battle of Trafalgar. These, plus books, and even a board game about drug dealing ‘Dollars and Dibble’, were all available via mail order and we supplied libraries around the world too. The bank had clearly been ordered to investigate us for money laundering, although they never admitted it. All the questions they asked Ben and I were about proving our identity through passports etc.. When we did, yet more letters kept arriving demanding more proofs, birth certificates etc. and eventually when one of us missed supplying the required information, within a week or so of being asked, the account was summarily closed and we got a cheque made out to one of us with the few hundred pounds that was in the business bank account. Since neither of us could get a business bank account up and running for at least a few months and the bank account meant nobody could any longer use the website, we made the reluctant decision to shut it down. Thus was a thriving business killed off by the Co_operative bank. Having said that, co-op were not quite the worst. We did apply to open an account at Bristol’s ‘ethical’ Triodos bank, who proceeded to string us along for several months and then said our business was too risky for them to provide an account!
