Ken Mc Callum, new MI5/6 chief, on the continuing threat in Northern Ireland.Russia’s GRU seeking to cause ‘mayhem’ in Britain and Europe, UK spy chief says LONDON, Oct 8 (Reuters) – Russia’s GRU military intelligence service is seeking to cause “mayhem” across Britain and Europe, the UK’s domestic spy chief said on Tuesday, while a growing threat from resurgent al Qaeda and Islamic State was his greatest terrorism concern. In a wide-ranging speech outlining the current threat picture, Security Service (MI5) Director General Ken McCallum also accused Iran of being behind “plot after plot” on British soil. McCallum said state threat investigations were up 48% in the last year as Russia and Iran turned to criminals, drug traffickers and proxies to carry out their “dirty work”. “It will be clear to you that MI5 has one hell of a job on its hands,” he said. Since March 2017, he said MI5 and the British police had disrupted 43 late-stage plots, some of which were in the final days of planning for mass murder. The terrorist trend which the spy chief said concerned him most was a worsening threat from al Qaeda seeking to capitalise on the conflict in the Middle East, and especially Islamic State, which had resumed efforts to export terrorism, such as the March attack on a Moscow concert hall. Events in the Middle East had not yet translated at scale into militant violence at home, he said. “We are powerfully alive to the risk that events in the Middle East directly trigger terrorist action in the UK,” he said, citing an incident where a Moroccan man stabbed to death a passer-by in northern England in what he said was revenge for Israeli actions in Gaza.

The Alternative Skripal Narrative by Michael Antony for The Saker Blog Let’s take the famous Nina Ricci perfume bottle, laced with novichok, which was found in a rubbish bin or charity bin by a homeless man and given weeks later to his woman friend, who tragically died after spraying it on her wrist. The police/MI6 narrative is that this perfume bottle was used to transport the novichok from Russia in the baggage of one of the alleged GRU men caught on CCTV in Salisbury. The novichok was then sprayed on the door handle of the Skripals’ house. The assassins then callously threw away the bottle (which they knew contained enough novichok to kill more people) in a dustbin or charity bin, demonstrating their indifference to loss of life as well as their indifference to leaving clues all over the place. There are problems with this narrative. The homeless man claimed he had found the perfume bottle still in its box sealed in cellophane, proof it was not reopened after it had been laced with novichok and professionally repackaged. The bottle could not therefore have been used (as claimed) to spray the novichok on the doorknob, or the cellophane seal would have been broken. Assassins far from home don’t usually carry around cellophane-wrapping machines to repackage opened perfume bottles, especially when they are just going to chuck them in the bin. Nor would they take the risk, having fitted the separate spray nozzle onto the bottle and sprayed the doorknob, of disassembling it again to put it back in the box, knowing that a drop on their skin would kill them. And where would they perform this delicate operation? On the street? This poisoned perfume bottle was therefore never reopened, never used and it affected nobody until it ended up in the hands of the homeless man. So who or what was it intended for?

As an aside: the nozzle on the bottle was almost certainly not created by Russian scientists (as was claimed by “expert” Hamish de-Bretton Gordon) but taken from a throat spray made in Czechoslovakia by an Israeli pharmaceuticals company called Teva, part-owned by Pfizer.

A counter-terrorism chief has defended the vetting process for Metropolitan Police officers after a former officer was jailed for belonging to a neo-Nazi group. Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu spoke of being “shocked and betrayed” after Ben Hannam, 22, was jailed for more than four years for being a member of banned extremist group National Action (NA). However, Mr Basu, National Police Chiefs Council lead for counter terrorism policing, denied the force’s vetting procedure was the problem, saying that Hannam would not have been caught if background checks had been more rigorous. He told Times Radio: “When I found out about this case, when we originally identified him, I was as shocked and betrayed as the tens of thousands of decent police officers all over the country will have felt when they saw the sentence today. “This is not a man who represents us, and it was a significant sentence and a pretty stark warning for anybody who’s interested in right-wing extremism and this kind of filth, let alone a serving police officer.” He went on to say: “No vetting process is 100%, the judge recognised the vetting process wasn’t to blame here, in this particular case, it can’t be 100%.” Mr Basu said it would be “foolish” for him to say vetting procedures are not being reviewed nationally because of the case….

Director of MI-5 Ken McCallum’s remarks about alleged Russian sabotage acts in Europe are baseless, the Russian embassy in London said in a statement. “The Russian Embassy emphatically rejects the unsubstantiated allegations by Director of MI-5 Ken McCallum,” reads the statement, posted on the embassy’s Telegram channel. “By virtue of his profession Mr McCallum is well aware that the Russian Federation is the real target of proxy and mercenary warfare as well as hostile intelligence operations, conducted in the context of the Ukraine crisis by NATO countries, including the UK.” “The scare tactics he seeks to employ are clearly aimed at sustaining the ebbing public support for the Kiev regime which is quickly draining the UK’s finances and arsenals,” the embassy added. Earlier, McCallum accused Russian special services of a plot to create chaos in Europe, including the United Kingdom. He explained it by his country’s active support to the Kiev government, together with other allies.

National Security Act.  MI5 can authorise informants to commit murder, kidnap and torture A tribunal has ruled the policy is lawful A controversial policy which allows MI5 to authorise informants to commit serious criminal offences – potentially including murder, kidnap and torture – is lawful, a tribunal has ruled. But the Investigatory Powers Tribunal (IPT) said “this does not mean that (MI5) has any power to confer immunity from liability under either the criminal law or the civil law”. Four human rights organisations took legal action against the Government over a policy they claimed “purports to permit (MI5) agents to participate in crime” and effectively “immunises criminal conduct from prosecution”. Privacy International, Reprieve, the Committee on the Administration of Justice, and the Pat Finucane Centre asked the IPT to declare the policy unlawful and grant an injunction “restraining further unlawful conduct”. But, in a ruling on Friday, the tribunal ruled by a 3-2 majority that MI5, also known as the Security Service, does have the power to authorise the commission of criminal offences by informants. In the majority ruling, IPT president Lord Justice Singh said MI5 has “an implied power” under the Security Service Act 1989 “to engage in the activities which are the subject of the policy under challenge”.

Alleged Russian arson and sabotage in UK… Two men charged over alleged Russia-linked arson plot. Counter-terrorism police are investigating a fire at a Ukraine-linked business premises Two more men have been charged in relation to an alleged arson attack against a Ukraine-linked business in London, taking the total number of suspects to seven. It comes after two British men were charged in April with helping a foreign intelligence service in relation to a large fire which broke out at an industrial estate in Leyton in March. It is understood the foreign country in question is Russia. On Saturday, the Metropolitan Police said Jakeem Barrington Rose, 22, and Ugnius Asmena, 19, had been charged with aggravated arson. Neither are accused of ties to Russian intelligence. They were arrested on Thursday and appeared in court earlier on Saturday. Mr Asmena, of no fixed address, was born in Lithuania and has previously unsuccessfully applied for EU Settled status, the court was told. Mr Rose, of Croydon, also faces two charges of possessing a knife. Neither was asked to enter a plea during the short hearing. Earlier this year, Dylan Earl and Jake Reeves were charged with National Security Act offences in relation to the fire, becoming the first two people to be prosecuted under the new law. The legislation is designed to crack down on alleged espionage, sabotage and foreign interference. Mr Earl is accused of planning to target the business, as well as attempting to recruit individuals to materially assist a foreign intelligence service, undertaking fraudulent activity and arson. Mr Reeves is accused of accepting money knowing that it was from a foreign intelligence service. Three other suspects – Dmitrijus Paulauska, Paul English and Kojo Mensah – have previously been charged with lesser offences not linked to national security legislation.

Crisis measures to tackle English prison overcrowding imminent, says union POA chair says ministers could declare as soon as Monday that Operation Early Dawn is coming into force The launch of an emergency plan to avoid prison overcrowding in England could be announced as soon as Monday, the Prison Officers’ Association has said. The longstanding measure, known as Operation Early Dawn, would allow defendants to be held in police cells until prison beds became available and could mean their court dates are delayed or adjourned at short notice. Mark Fairhurst, the national chairman of the POA, said the measure risked “clogging up police cells” and he blamed rioters for increasing the pressure on prisons. The Observer revealed over the weekend that the prison operation was expected to start this week, having also been used for several days in March, when prison capacity hit critical levels. Fairhurst told BBC Radio 4’s Broadcasting House on Sunday: “Last week we had the biggest influx of new receptions I’ve seen for quite some time. We had 397 new receptions. As of Friday we only had 340 spaces left in the adult closed male estate, which is feeling the most pressure. “I wouldn’t be surprised if at some point tomorrow morning the Ministry of Justice would announce that Operation Early Dawn kicks in to play at some point next week, probably Tuesday onwards. “The pinch points at the moment are the north-east and the north-west, so it’s likely that if you commit an offence in those areas you will be carted 100, 200 miles away from home to serve your sentence because there’s simply very few spaces.” An internal document said prison escort staff would make assessments each day to check how many people being held by police could be taken to scheduled court hearings, be released on bail or have their cases delayed. Operation Early Dawn was last triggered by the Conservative government in May.

‘Murder Pod’ developed for ‘assisted dying’. Several arrested after woman dies in ‘suicide pod’ The latest model of the device – known as the Sarco – was displayed in Zurich in July Police in Switzerland made multiple arrests after a woman reportedly ended her life using a so-called suicide pod, in apparently the first case of its kind. Police in the Schaffhausen region said they arrested “several persons” on suspicion of inciting, and aiding and abetting suicide after she died reportedly by using a pod made by the company Sarco on Monday. While assisted dying is legally protected in some circumstances in Switzerland, it is strictly regulated and the Sarco pod has encountered opposition. Officers recovered the device and body at the scene. The company behind the controversial pod says it can be solely operated by the person seeking to end their own life, without medical supervision. Police said it was used on Monday at a forest hut in the Merishausen area, a sparsely populated part of Switzerland on the German border. Police said they were tipped off by a law firm about a suicide involving the device. The number of people arrested and their identities were not disclosed. The deceased also was not named. In July, a pro-assisted dying group, which promotes the Sarco device, said it anticipated that it would be used for the first time this year. Advocates say it provides an option not reliant on drugs ordoctors, and that it expands access to euthanasia as the portable device can be 3D-printed and assembled at home. However, there also has been opposition in Switzerland, despite the country having some of the world’s most protective laws surrounding assisted dying. Critics fear the device’s modern design glamorises suicide and the fact that it can be operated without medical oversight is concerning. Assisted dying is illegal in the UK and in most other European countries, but thousands have travelled to Switzerland over the years to end their own lives….

Labour MP Kim Leadbeater, who came first in the Private Members’ Bill ballot, announced yesterday that she would be introducing an assisted suicide Bill could be voted on before Christmas. Though details of the Bill have not yet been released reports suggest it is likely to be similar to Lord Falconer’s assisted suicide Bill in the House of Lords, which is his seventh attempt to change the law on assisted suicide. The announcement comes after it was reported that the Prime Minister was behind the Government approaching Labour MPs high up in the Private Members’ Bill ballot encouraging them to take forward a Bill on assisted suicide.

MAJOR GAP IN THE PROVISION OF PALLIATIVE CARE SERVICES IN THE UNITED KINGDOM The introduction of the Bill comes as many elderly people go into winter with their Winter Fuel Payment cut by the Government, as palliative care services are in crisis with 100,000 people dying each year needing palliative care but not receiving it, and a wider healthcare system also in a state of crisis, with Labour’s own Health Secretary describing the NHS as “broken”. According to Marie Curie’s Better End of Life Report 2024 “It is estimated that each year across the UK, 100,000 people die needing palliative care but not receiving it. People with lower socio-economic position, non-cancer diagnoses, and from ethnic minority groups are less likely to access high-quality palliative care”. According to Hospice UK, the UK hospice sector is facing a collective estimated deficit of £77 million in the financial year 2023-24. Demand for palliative care is set to increase. In 20 years’ time, there are expected to be 100,000 more people dying each year in the United Kingdom. Analysis by Marie Curie shows that by 2048, the number of people with palliative care needs in the UK will climb by more than 147,000 to over 730,000. Matthew Reed, chief executive of Marie Curie said the findings from the survey show that “care for dying people is in crisis”. A YouGov poll commissioned by King’s College London shows that 65% of the general population are worried about access to palliative and end-of-life care and 41% think there is too little NHS resource allocated to palliative care. PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES AND DOCTORS OPPOSED TO ASSISTED SUICIDE No major disability advocate groups in the UK – including Disability Rights UK, Scope and Not Dead Yet – support a change in the law to introduce assisted suicide or euthanasia. Polling commissioned by Scope showed that the majority of people with disabilities (64%) – including nearly three-quarters (72%) of young disabled people – are concerned about moves to legalise assisted suicide. Nearly two-thirds (62%) of people with disabilities who were concerned about a change in the law were worried that pressure would be put on disabled people to end their lives prematurely. No doctors’ groups in the UK support changing the law to introduce assisted suicide or euthanasia, including the British Medical Association, the Royal College of General Practitioners, the Royal College of Physicians, the British Geriatric Society, and the Association for Palliative Medicine. In particular, there is strong opposition to introducing assisted suicide from doctors who specialise in working with people with incurable conditions at the end of their life. A survey of palliative care doctors who are members of the Association for Palliative Medicine found that 82% oppose the introduction of assisted suicide. The results of the Association for Palliative Medicine survey have been mirrored in a more recent survey of doctors by the British Medical Association, which found that 83% of palliative care doctors oppose a change in the law to introduce assisted suicide, while only 6% supported such a change.

Doctors ask if covid is to blame. It’s not a new idea that viruses can cause or accelerate cancer. But it will probably be years before answers emerge about covid and cancer. “I’ve been in practice 23 years and have never seen anything like this,” Patel, CEO of Carolina Blood and Cancer Care Associates, later recalled. Asutosh Gor, another oncologist, agreed: “We were all shaken.” There was other weirdness, too: multiple patients contending with multiple types of cancer arising almost simultaneously, and more than a dozen new cases of other rare cancers. Increasingly, Patel was left with an unsettling thought: Could the coronavirus be inflaming the embers of cancer? The uptick in aggressive, late-stage cancers since the dawn of the pandemic is confirmed by some early national data and a number of large cancer institutions. Many experts have mostly dismissed the trend as an expected consequence of disruptions to health care that began in 2020. The group’s loosely affiliated members are launching research studies that are trying to piece together the puzzle of coronavirus infection, long covid and cancer. Wallace — the University of Pennsylvania scientist considered a father of the field of human mitochondrial genetics, which explores the power plants that fuel human cells — is researching how covid affects energy production in cells and how that might influence cancer vulnerability. Separately, biodata experts are sequencing the gene profiles of organs from people who succumbed to covid and underwent autopsies. And a University of Colorado team is studying whether covid reawakens dormant cancer cells in mice. Their provocative findings, according to a preprint report released in April, showed that when mice that were cancer survivors were infected with SARS-CoV-2, dormant cancer cells proliferated in the lungs. They saw similar results with the flu virus. Pathologists from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences reported in 2021 in the journal Communications Biology that SARS-CoV-2 proteins fueled the replication of a herpesvirus considered one of the major viruses leading to cancer. Other studies have implicated the coronavirus in helping to stimulate dormant breast cancer cells. A paper published in 2023 in the journal Biochimie explored mechanisms the coronavirus could exploit to aggravate several forms of cancer, including lung, colorectal, pancreatic and oral. Researchers suggested the most likely pathway was through disrupting the body’s ability to suppress tumors, but researchers acknowledged a lack of direct evidence to support the theory.

The women decided it was time to fight back.? “Had I known that he was an undercover police officer at the time, it would’ve had a devastating effect on me and I would’ve regarded it as rape. He was wearing a mask. I didn’t know who he was. I wouldn’t have consented to have sex with this man. So in that sense, it’s non-consensual. New Spycops Inquiry delay is ‘pandering to the abusers’ as ‘timescales keep slipping’ The Undercover Policing Inquiry was due to restart this week. But authorities have postponed it yet again. In a Campaign Opposing Police Surveillance (COPS) press release, the group said “the latest delays are symptoms of fundamental problems” with what has turned the Spycops Inquiry into “one of the longest public inquiries in UK history”. The massive scandal of decades of anti-left political policing As Madoc Roberts, one of the film-makers behind the Spies Who Ruined Our Lives documentary, previously told the Canary: unless you joined all the dots together, you wouldn’t have known that this was political policing, until you discover that it’s 1,000 groups and that all the groups just happened to be left-wing. He also insisted about Spycops: I think it is one of the biggest scandals that we’ve seen. But the irony of it all is it just gets treated as ‘a story for today, a story for this week’, and then it’s dropped again and then it’s dropped again. Yet it started in 1968, and we’re only getting to know about it in the last 10 years or so. It’s a massive scandal. A lack of resources, and a lack of time for Spycops Inquiry As COPS explained in its press release about the latest Spycops Inquiry delay: Established in 2014 with completion promised by 2017, it took the UCPI until 2020 to hear the first evidence. Four years later, it is not half way through evidential hearings, and doubts are mounting that the UCPI can even fulfill its Terms of Reference. It continued by insisting that: The Inquiry’s internal disorder is such that disclosure remains unfinished and timetables are yet to be published for the next hearings.

Contrary to some Israeli media reports, Argamani clarified that she was not beaten or had her hair shaved by Palestinian fighters. Through her Instagram page, Argamani clarified that the Qassam Brigades did not harm her physically or cut her hair, but she sustained injuries when a wall collapsed during an Israeli airstrike. “I cannot stay silent about what the Israeli media has done to me over the past 24 hours, taking my words out of context,” she stated, adding: “I am a victim of the October 7 operation, and I refuse to be victimized again by the Israeli media.” Argamani explained that Al-Qassam members “did not hit me while I was in captivity, nor did they cut my hair.”

Sky News investigates slaughter of Palestinian family fleeing fighting | Israel-Hamas War Sky’s Stuart Ramsay tells the story of Hind Rajab, a five-year-old Palestinian girl who was killed with her family as she tried to flee fighting in Gaza. The family’s car was attacked, killing the adults inside. Hind and her 15-year-old cousin survived, before the vehicle was attacked again. An ambulance that went to help the girls was also attacked, killing two paramedics. Israel denied its military was in the area, but a Sky News investigation tells a different story.

They’ve compared him to Hitler. This isn’t some unfortunate incident, this was an assassination attempt by a madman inspired by the rhetoric of the radical left.” Just last Monday, President Biden himself said it’s “time to put Trump in a bullseye” in a now-wince-inducing quote from a private call with hundreds of democratic donors, Politico reported at the time. The unfortunate wording brought to mind remarks NY Democratic Rep. Dan Goldman made last November in an MSNBC interview with former White House press secretary Jen Psaki, saying Trump should be “eliminated” over his alleged role in the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot. “It is just unquestionable at this point that man cannot see public office again. He is not only unfit, he is destructive to our democracy, and he has to be eliminated,” the District 10 representative said. Goldman later walked back his remarks in a post on X, saying he doesn’t condone “political violence.” The official Biden-Harris HQ account also made a post on X in December with the heading “Trump Parrots Hitler” featuring a series of images of Trump and Hitler’s faces juxtaposed with quotes from each, which the campaign alleged were similar. Casually comparing the former president to history’s greatest monster was apparently also a favorite pastime inside the Biden White House. Young staffers including aides to President Biden have reportedly taken to calling Trump “Hitler Pig” behind closed doors.

Sergey Lavrov said criticism of Russia’s “special operation” based on the UN Charter and Ukraine’s territorial integrity, ignored the fact that the UN’s founding document also “declares the obligation to respect the principles of the equality and self-determination of peoples”, he said, arguing that this had after all been the basis for ongoing decolonisation efforts. “The rights of Russians and those that feel they are part of Russian culture following the coup d’etat in Kyiv have methodically been exterminated,” he declared, and this poses a threat to Russian and wider European security. Mr. Lavrov said President Vladimir Putin had a “realistic settlement plan” and was prepared to negotiate, blaming the West for sabotaging previous attempts. He said the attempt by the Washington-London-Brussels axis to defeat Russia was nullifying the UN’s attempts to enhance global cooperation through agreements such as Sunday’s Pact for the Future – which Russia refused to back – and was “blocking the functioning of the entire system of global governance, including the Security Council.” “That’s not something we chose and we’re not responsible for the consequences of this dangerous course,” he added.

According to a United Nations inquiry released this month, over 80 percent of the 6,106 protesters wounded in the first nine months of the Great March of Return were shot in the lower limbs. Israeli soldiers intentionally shot civilians and may have committed war crimes in their heavy-handed response to the protests, which have been held regularly across Gaza since 30 March 2018, the report concluded. Healthcare providers say the pattern of wounds shows that Israeli soldiers are purposefully shooting to maim protesters, most of whom are in their 20s and now require long-term medical care. “The soldier knows exactly where he’s putting the bullet. This is not random. This is very intimate. Wider war imminent now?   BEIRUT – The United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon said on Oct 5 it would not leave positions in the south despite what it said was an Israeli request to “relocate”. “On Sept 30, the IDF (Israeli military) notified Unifil of their intention to undertake limited ground incursions into Lebanon. They also requested we relocate from some of our positions,” the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil) said. “Peacekeepers remain in all positions and the UN flag continues to fly. “We are regularly adjusting our posture and activities, and we have contingency plans ready to activate if absolutely necessary,” it added. Israel has intensified its campaign against Lebanese militant group Hezbollah since Sept 23, killing more than 1,110 people and forcing hundreds of thousands to flee their homes in a country already mired in economic crisis. Israel said earlier this week that it would start carrying out limited ground incursions into south Lebanon. “We continue to urge Lebanon and Israel to recommit to Security Council resolution 1701 – in actions, not just word – as the only viable solution to bring back stability in the region,” Unifil said. UN Security Council resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah, stipulated that only the Lebanese army and UN peacekeepers should be deployed in south Lebanon.

Nasrallah’s final speech – pager attacks  Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah killed in Beirut strike, group confirms The Lebanese movement vows to ‘continue its jihad’ against Israel and to support people in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories Lebanon’s Hezbollah confirmed on Saturday that its leader, Hassan Nasrallah, was killed after Israel launched a series of air strikes on the Lebanese capital, Beirut, a day earlier. In an assassination that risks triggering all-out war in a region already on the brink, Israeli fighter jets dropped approximately 10 bunker-busting bombs on residential buildings in Beirut’s southern suburbs, an area colloquially known as Dahiyeh, on Friday. Footage seen by Middle East Eye showed thick plumes of smoke rising from the blast site. The Israeli military immediately confirmed it was behind the strikes and initially claimed it targeted Hezbollah’s command centre. Later, Israeli media reported that Nasrallah, 64, was the intended target of the strikes, but did not confirm his death. On Saturday, the Israeli army posted a message on X, saying: “Hassan Nasrallah will no longer be able to terrorise the world.” The Arabic spokesman of the Israeli army, Avichay Adraee, also said in a statement on X that Nasrallah was killed alongside Ali Karki, the commander of Hezbollah’s southern front, as well as a number of other commanders. “The message is clear: we will reach everyone who threatens the citizens of Israel in the north, in the south and on more distant fronts.” Later, Hezbollah said in a statement: “His eminence, the master of resistance, the righteous servant, has passed away to be with his lord who is pleased with him as a great martyr. “The leadership of Hezbollah pledges… to continue its jihad in confronting the enemy [Israel], supporting Gaza and Palestine and defending Lebanon and its steadfast and honourable people.” The statement did not mention who would succeed Nasrallah or how the group would respond to the assassination of its long-time leader. According to analysts, the man widely regarded as Nasrallah’s heir, Hashem Safieddine, was still alive after Friday’s attack. Safieddine, who oversees Hezbollah’s political affairs and sits on the group’s Jihad Council, is a cousin of Nasrallah. Like Nasrallah, he is a cleric and descendant of the Prophet Muhammad. The US State Department designated Safieddine a terrorist in 2017, and in June, he threatened a big escalation against Israel after the killing of another Hezbollah commander. Khamenei urges Muslims to confront Israel Earlier on Saturday, Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei urged all Muslims to stand by the people of Lebanon and assist Hezbollah in confronting Israel’s “wicked regime”.

Israel says it is hitting Hezbollah sites, including weapons stores and ammunition dumps, but Lebanese officials say more than 100 women and children have been killed. There has been almost a year of cross-border hostilities between Israel’s forces and Hezbollah, sparked by the war in Gaza. Hezbollah has fired thousands of rockets at northern Israel during that time, forcing some Israelis living there to flee south, while the IDF has launched air strikes and artillery fire against Hezbollah positions in Lebanon. The number of weekly Israeli attacks on Lebanon more than tripled in the week before the IDF launched its ground invasion. The number of Hezbollah attacks, while small in comparison, also increased in the same week. Reported attacks peaked in the last week of September, with 823 Israeli attacks and 112 Hezbollah attacks. Israel has intensified strikes on Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, in recent days. The majority of the strikes have hit Dahieh, a southern suburb of the city and a densely populated area that is home to thousands of civilians. The suburb, close to the international airport, has a strong Hezbollah presence and a series of Israeli strikes on buildings in the area killed Hezbollah’s leader Hassan Nasrallah on 27 September. There have also been Israeli aerial attacks on locations closer to the centre of the city. A strike on an apartment block close to the Lebanese parliament building on 2 October killed several people, including rescue officers and paramedics, according to Beirut’s civil defence.

Words like “audacious”, “escalation” and “targets” have become tools to conceal meaning, not to illuminate – and for good reason. Because Israel’s actions are so obviously criminal, so obviously horrifying, so obviously genocidal. Language becomes a weapon to hide the truth. The media chorus goes like this: Israel is attacking Lebanon to stop Hezbollah rocket fire and allow the residents of Israel’s most northerly communities to return home. Or in the blunter, Orwellian language of Israeli officials framing this horror show: Israel must “escalate to de-escalate”. Lebanese civilians are paying the heaviest price: some 550 of them were killed in the first day of Israel’s bombing campaign alone. Many tens of thousands have been driven – ethnically cleansed – from the territory of south Lebanon. Why? Because, says Israel, Hezbollah has hidden its cache of rockets in their homes. Those homes must therefore be destroyed. Strangely, Hezbollah seems to have forgotten that it has extensive rocky terrain across south Lebanon where it could more safely and wisely hide its arsenal. If this story sounds familiar, that’s because it is. It is the same script used to justify the slaughter in Gaza. The Parliamentary Assembly includes lawmakers from 46 European countries. We are here. The world is with you,” one supporter shouted before Assange entered the Council of Europe building early Tuesday. “I am not free today because the system worked,” Assange said. “I am free today after years of incarceration because I pled guilty to journalism.” He added: “I pled guilty to seeking information from a source. I pled guilty to obtaining information from a source. And I pled guilty to informing the public what that information was.” Assange was released in June after five years in a British prison after he pleaded guilty to obtaining and publishing U.S. military secrets in a deal with Justice Department prosecutors that concluded a drawn-out legal saga. Prior to his time in prison, he had spent seven years in self-imposed exile in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, where he claimed asylum on the grounds of political persecution. Russians on invasion in to Lebanon this week. Iran vs Israel at UNSC: Tehran and Tel Aviv warn each other of retaliation if attacked. Israel and Iran have issued threats of retaliation if attacked as the United Nations Security Council convened amid concerns of a broader conflict in the Middle East. The council met following Israel’s assassination of the leader of Lebanon’s Hezbollah and its subsequent ground assault on the Iran-backed militant group. Anna Levina, a Russian researcher and photographer-documentarian living in Beirut, has been stocking up on supplies in preparation for Israel’s assault on Lebanon, and she still has non-perishables sitting in her kitchen since last October, when Hezbollah and Israel started firing missiles at each other. “The feeling is, of course, unpleasant, but I’ve been waiting for this moment for a year,” said Levina, of the dramatic escalation in Israeli missile strikes on many parts of Lebanon, including Beirut, over the past two weeks, in which more than 2,000 people have been killed. Cooper was a member of the Office of Naval Security and Intelligence serving as a Harbor and River Patrol Boat Captain at Danang and the Dong Ha River Security Group, Cua Viet, Republic of Vietnam. William Cooper was awarded several medals for his leadership and heroism during combat including two with “V” for Valor. He served on the Intelligence Briefing Team for the Commander In Chief of the Pacific Fleet. William was the Petty Officer of the Watch and designated KL-47 SPECAT operator in the CINCPACFLT Command Center at Makalapa Hawaii. There he held a Top Secret, Q, SI, security clearance. William Cooper achieved the rank of First Class Petty Officer, QM1, E-6 after only 8 years of Naval service, a difficult task in any branch of the United States military. William Cooper received an Honorable Discharge from the United States Navy on December 11, 1975.

No one comes at all Jonathan Cook It says much about the institutional racism of the BBC that it thinks Surviving October 7: We Will Dance Again is a suitable title for its documentary marking the first anniversary of the massacre of Israelis at the Nova rave. Presumably the programme-makers believed it suggested healing and empowerment for those who survived October 7, rather than, as it does, continuing indifference to the horrifying plight of the people of Gaza who live – or, in so many cases, have died – just a stone’s throw from where the Nova festival was held. At the time of the rave, Palestinians were trapped in the concentration camp of Gaza, under a medieval-style siege by land, sea and air that Israel had imposed on them for 17 years. Until, that is, Hamas broke out for one day, on October 7, briefly spreading carnage in its wake. Like most other Israelis, the partygoers at Nova either did not know or did not care that so much suffering was happening just out of view in Gaza. They know now. As do the programme-makers. Tens of thousands of Palestinians, most of them women and children, have been slaughtered by Israel’s bombs over the past year. The rest are being starved to death by an intensified Israeli siege. The International Court of Justice has ruled that a “plausible” case has been made that Israel is committing a genocide. Though no western politicians or media ever mention it, Israel is, in fact, on trial at this very moment at the world’s highest court, charged with the ultimate crime against humanity. So what is the title “We will dance again” meant to convey? That Israelis can get back to partying because the deaths and suffering they experienced at Hamas’ hands lasted only a day?

The preliminary research, which hasn’t been peer reviewed, is from law professors at Columbia University and New York University and details a “significant” and “unusual” spike five days before the attacks in short selling in the most popular fund linked to Israeli companies. Short selling is a way to bet against the value of a security. Those bets against the value of the MSCI Israel Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) in the days before the October 7 attack “far exceeded” the short selling activity that took place during the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2014 Israel-Gaza war and the 2008 global financial crisis, the paper finds. “Our findings suggest that traders informed about the coming attacks profited from these tragic events,” the authors wrote.

Krongard then became, as part of the merger, Vice Chairman of Banker’s Trust-AB Brown, one of 20 major U.S. banks named by Senator Carl Levin this year as being connected to money laundering. Krongard’s last position at Banker’s Trust (BT) was to oversee “private client relations.” In this capacity he had direct hands-on relations with some of the wealthiest people in the world in a kind of specialized banking operation that has been identified by the U.S. Senate and other investigators as being closely connected to the laundering of drug money. He was promoted to CIA Executive Director by President Bush in March of this year. BT was acquired by Deutsche Bank in 1999. The combined firm is the single largest bank in Europe. And, as we shall see, Deutsche Bank played several key roles in events connected to the September 11 attacks.

Today, the eleventh anniversary of the 11 September 2001 attacks on New York and Washington, I was struck by the news in Haaretz: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday launched an unprecedented verbal attack on the US government over its stance on the Iranian nuclear program. “The world tells Israel ‘wait, there’s still time’. And I say, ‘Wait for what? Wait until when?’ Those in the international community who refuse to put red lines before Iran don’t have a moral right to place a red light before Israel,” Netanyahu told reporters on Tuesday. Eleven years ago on this day, as the world looked on in stunned horror as the towers came down in New York, the same Netanyahu was already thinking strategically. Here’s how The New York Times reported it: Asked tonight what the attack meant for relations between the United States and Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, the former prime minister, replied, “It’s very good.” Then he edited himself: “Well, not very good, but it will generate immediate sympathy.” He predicted that the attack would “strengthen the bond between our two peoples, because we’ve experienced terror over so many decades, but the United States has now experienced a massive hemorrhaging of terror.”

This is crucial because without complete control, the setting of explosives to bring down the towers would be next to impossible without serious risk of discovery. Silverstein’s two children, who also worked in the WTC, were also absent from work that day. Larry Silverstein was paid $4.55 billion in insurance money as a result of the destruction of the WTC complex[10]. He also sued the airlines and airport security, seeking $12.3 billion in damages, though his ultimate payout after a 13 years legal struggle was just $95.2 million.[11] Silverstein was a personal friend of media-magnate Rupert Murdoch and former Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon. Haaretz reported that he was such good friends with Benjamin Netanyahu that he spoke with him on the phone every Sunday.[12] Larry Silverstein hid his role in 9/11? Frank Lowy, a Czechoslovakia born Jew, was the owner of Westfield America, one of the biggest shopping mall conglomerates in the world. Lowy leased the shopping concourse area called the Mall at the World Trade Center, made up of approximately 427,000 square feet of retail floor space. Frank Lowy was a member of the Golani Brigade, and fought in the Israeli war of independence.[clarification needed] Before this he was a member of Hagganah. He spends three months of the year at his home in Israel and has been described by the Sydney Morning Herald as “a self-made man with a strong interest in the Holocaust and Israeli politics.” He funded and launched the Israeli Institute for National Strategy and Policy, which will “operate within the framework of Tel Aviv University” in Israel. He is also close friends with many top Israeli officials such as Ehud Olmert, Ariel Sharon, Bibi Netanyahu, and Ehud Barak. He was implicated in an Israeli Bank Scandal with Olmert.[13] Frank Lowy was not at the WTC on 9/11. Lewis Eisenberg – Eisenberg was the head of the Port Authority of New York and authorized the lease transfer to Silverstein and Lowy. [14] Eisenberg was a large contributor to the Bush-Cheney presidential campaign, as well as a partner in Goldman Sachs. Eisenberg has been both a member of the Planning Board of the United Jewish Appeal/United Jewish Federation pro-Israeli government pressure group in the U.S. [15] Ronald Lauder – Billionaire Estée Lauder Cosmetics magnate. He was the chairman of NY Governor George Pataki’s commission on privatization. He is the key individual who lobbied for the privatization of the WTC[16] — but he was also instrumental in the successful privatisation of the former Stewart Air Force Base. Oddly, the flight paths of flight 175 and flight 11 converged directly over this airport. Map Lauder was active[When?] in the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations , Jewish National Fund, World Jewish Congress, American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, Anti-Defamation League and Jewish Theological Seminary. He was elected president of the World Jewish Congress on 10 June, 2007. He founded a school for the Mossad in Herzliya, Israel called the Lauder School of Government Diplomacy and Strategy. He is arguably the key Sayan in the preparation of 9/11.

Roger Cook – The Cook Report – smuggling bombs on to planes – The Cook Report – Terror in the Skies/Bombs on Planes S14E01 (1996) – Roger Cook Reports – The Cook Report was prompted to make the programme by Dr Jim Swire, whose 23-year-old daughter Flora was amongst 270 victims when a terrorist bomb brought down Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie in December 1988. Dr Swire subsequently became a spokesman for all the bereaved British relatives. He had run a small-scale test, successfully smuggling a dummy replica of the Lockerbie bomb through the airport security systems in London and New York – and suggested that the Cook Report could do it on a much larger scale with a correspondingly larger public impact. The programme’s first test involved sending a suitcase containing a mock Semtex bomb from Ancona in Italy, via Rome, to Gatwick. The suitcase was checked in at Ancona without any problems and then its ‘owner ‘got off the plane in Rome, leaving a theoretically lethal package to continue undetected and unaccompanied on its way to Gatwick. It was ludicrously easy, and the same dummy bomb got through X-ray and security procedures at no fewer than nine different airports on both sides of the Atlantic. Worst was Logan in Boston, which Mohamed Atta, the leader of the 9/11 terrorists, later chose as his departure point prior to hijacking the aircraft that demolished the Twin Towers. Research for the programme also took it to Manila, where the police had discovered details of an extraordinary plot to blow up the Pentagon and the World Trade Center. The evidence was discovered on a laptop computer left behind by a terrorist fleeing an unintended explosion in a bomb factory in a local apartment block. The programme was later able to reveal previously unknown links that led all the way from that bomb maker to Osama bin Laden. Manila’s Police Chief, Hermogenes J. Ebdane Junior – a retired general and future national security adviser – gave the Cook Report exclusive access to the computer’s files because he said the US Authorities, including the FBI and the CIA, simply weren’t interested. That was five years before 9/11 and had that evidence been followed up, then the lives of 2,973 people might not have been lost.

And finally, she woke up in a hospital burn unit six days later, only to find out that her husband had been killed in the north tower. Head became the face of the Sept. 11 survivors movement, telling her story to the media and to tour groups at ground zero. There was just one problem: Not a word of it was true. “Her real name wasn’t Tania Head at all,” author and documentary filmmaker Angelo Guglielmo tells weekends on All Things Considered host Guy Raz. “She was actually not even in the United States on Sept. 11.”

He just returned from Chile, and his latest article for The Nation magazine is “Chileans Confront Their Own 9/11.” We continue our coverage of the 40th anniversary of the overthrow of Chilean President Salvador Allende with a look at the critical U.S. role under President Richard Nixon and his national security adviser, Henry Kissinger. Peter Kornbluh, who spearheaded the effort to declassify more than 20,000 secret documents that revealed the role of the CIA and the White House in the Chilean coup, discusses how Nixon and Kissinger backed the Chilean military’s ouster of Allende and then offered critical support as it committed atrocities to cement its newfound rule. The Colony: Chile’s dark past uncovered – How did a secret German sect in Chile become a haven for Nazi fugitives and a torture centre for the Pinochet regime? Forty years after the US-backed military coup that brought General Augusto Pinochet to power in Chile, the truth about the sordid abuses and crimes that took place during his dictatorship are still emerging. The mountains of Patagonia in southern Chile witnessed a particularly bizarre chapter of the Pinochet era; one that is still claiming victims today. In 1961, a former Nazi corporal called Paul Schaefer fled Germany, along with hundreds of others, to found a sect in southern Chile. In an idyllic rural enclave framed by the Andes Mountains he created a virtual state within a state – one where horrifying events unfolded. Initially with the ignorance of the government, and then with the complicity of the Pinochet regime, children were separated from their parents at birth and raised in a Kinder House. Men and women were kept apart and often drugged, while Schaefer systematically sexually abused boys and, occasionally, girls. It also served as a haven for Nazi fugitives – such as Walter Rauff, the inventor of the portable gas chamber, and Joseph Mengele, the so-called ‘Angel of Death’ – who were permitted to hide out there in exchange for overseeing sophisticated forms of torture. All of this took place with the full knowledge of the Pinochet regime, whose notorious intelligence chief, General Manuel Contreras, would often visit the site.

Britain paying highest electricity prices in the world Cost of power for industrial businesses now four times more expensive than in US British companies are paying the highest electricity prices of anywhere in the developed world, official data has shown. The cost of power for industrial businesses has jumped 124pc in just five years, according to the Government’s figures, catapulting the UK to the top of international league tables. It is now about 50pc more expensive than in Germany and France, and four times as expensive as in the US. The figures will fuel concerns about the future of UK industry amid warnings that high energy prices are crippling domestic manufacturers. They underline the challenge facing Ed Miliband, the Energy Secretary, who wants industrial businesses to switch away from gas to electricity-powered processes. Frank Aaskov, the director of energy at lobby group UK Steel, said: “High industrial electricity prices have for too long damaged the competitiveness of UK steelmaking, and many in the wider manufacturing sector will be feeling the same pressure our steel companies do. “The Government should tackle steep electricity costs and make the UK a fruitful place to invest, while enabling growth and improving competitiveness.” The electricity price paid by UK industrial users per kilowatt hour rose to 25.85p in 2023, the data show. That compares to 10.43p as recently as five years earlier and 8.89p a decade ago. It also far outstripped European rivals and allies such as the US and Canada. The equivalent price was 17.84p in France, 17.71p in Germany and 6.48p in the US. Across all the 31 member countries of the International Energy Agency, which collates the data, the median price was 17.70p per kilowatt hour, with Britain’s price higher than any other country. It comes after paper and packaging giant DS Smith told The Telegraph that high power prices risked becoming a barrier to investment, while steel producers – including Tata, the owner of Port Talbot – have warned ministers they “must deliver” more competitive prices. Yet many manufacturers are being encouraged to ditch industrial processes that use fossil fuels such as natural gas and switch over to electricity, as part of efforts to reach net zero carbon emissions. For example, Tata is in the process of closing its last blast furnace and transitioning to an electric arc furnace. Meanwhile, heavily polluting businesses must pay for any carbon emissions that exceed a legally allowed threshold. Despite this, a report by UK Steel this month described the electricity price as “a barrier to growth, competitiveness and profitability”. Successive governments have attempted to bring down Britain’s power costs, with the Conservatives most recently introducing the “supercharger” discount for energy-intensive businesses such as steel producers and glass makers. The supercharger strips out the majority of network costs and green levies. However, even after this huge discount UK Steel said power remained roughly twice as expensive as in Germany. It blamed the disparity on the UK’s electricity generation mix being “more dependent on gas”, with high natural gas prices pushing up UK power prices. The UK generated 33.7pc of its power using gas in 2023, compared to 17.1pc in Germany and just 5.9pc in nuclear-dominated France. In the UK, wind was in second, generating 28.7pc. But the wholesale price of electricity is set by the most expensive method needed to meet demand. Because renewables such as wind and solar currently do not meet this demand on their own, it almost always tracks the price of gas. For example, on late Thursday afternoon, gas was still being burned to generate 20pc of Britain’s power, while 35.6pc and 10.7pc were generated by wind and solar respectively. Against this backdrop, the Government has previously considered trying to decouple gas from the electricity price so that companies could instead pay a lower rate linked to renewables. But in a consultation published in March on reforms to the electricity market, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero said it had dropped the proposal. It said this was “on the basis that they would not deliver benefits for consumers and fail in our assessment against our criteria of deliverability and investor confidence”. A Government spokesman said: “We are already bringing energy costs for UK industries closer in line with other major economies through the British Industry Supercharger. “This fully exempts eligible firms from certain costs linked to renewable energy policies, particularly those exposed to the high cost of electricity. “Our mission is for clean power by 2030 because clean, homegrown energy is the best way to protect billpayers and boost Britain’s energy independence, with improving infrastructure at the heart of this mission.”

I was curious about the London attacks and amazed to learn that both these attacks had something in common: terror drills of the exact same scenarios were being conducted when those events went live. Can it really be just a coincidence? Luckily we have a survivor’s account to tell us what the media would not about the events of 7/7. Luckily we have a man who had the wherewithal to take notes and ask questions, and to keep tabs on how the media reported the story and how their story kept changing. Yes, the book could have been proofread better, and at first one does question the need for frequent passages about flirting with women in the tube etc. But I think they just go to show Daniel Obachike’s attention to detail and honesty about his mindset. The way the book is written shows Obachike is just an ordinary man who was caught up in extraordinary events. Traumatic as those events were, he did not just try to sweep them under the rug and forget. No, he did the brave thing by sharing his story with the world, and it is a story worth reading.

Israel raids Al Jazeera offices in West Bank – – Israel accused the Qatar-owned network of “incitement to and support of terrorism.” Israeli troops raided Al Jazeera’s offices in the West Bank early on Sunday and ordered the station to shut down for 45 days. Al Jazeera reported that “heavily armed and masked Israeli soldiers forcefully entered” the network’s offices in Ramallah and handed the West Bank bureau chief, Walid al-Omari, the closure order, which accused the station of “incitement to and support of terrorism.” “Targeting journalists this way always aims to erase the truth and prevent people from hearing the truth,” al-Omari said, Al Jazeera reported. Israel’s Minister of Communications Shlomo Karhi posted about the raid on social media, calling Al Jazeera “the mouthpiece of Hamas and Hezbollah.” “We will continue to fight enemy channels and ensure the safety of our heroic fighters,” Karhi said. This isn’t the first time Israel has cracked down on Al Jazeera, one of the only media outlets broadcasting from the Gaza Strip. In May, Israel raided and closed the network’s East Jerusalem office, banning the company’s websites and broadcasts in the country. The initial closure order was also for 45 days, but it was renewed, Al Jazeera said….

Rupert’s concern is that the liberal trio may outvote Lachlan and take the firms in a more liberal direction, damaging them commercially. The outcome of the case could dramatically alter the trajectory of Fox News and the empire’s other key assets, potentially leading to a more moderate direction if James, Elisabeth, and Prudence prevail. Putin changes nuclear doctrine this week – his speech on first strike against NATO/Ukraine. Putin issues nuclear warning to the West over strikes on Russia from Ukraine MOSCOW, Sept 25 (Reuters) – President Vladimir Putin warned the West on Wednesday that Russia could use nuclear weapons if it was struck with conventional missiles, and that Moscow would consider any assault on it supported by a nuclear power to be a joint attack. The decision to change Russia’s official nuclear doctrine is the Kremlin’s answer to deliberations in the United States and Britain about whether or not to give Ukraine permission to fire conventional Western missiles into Russia. The 71-year-old Kremlin chief, the primary decision-maker on Russia’s vast nuclear arsenal, said he wanted to underscore one key change in particular. “It is proposed that aggression against Russia by any non-nuclear state, but with the participation or support of a nuclear state, be considered as their joint attack on the Russian Federation,” Putin said. “The conditions for Russia’s transition to the use of nuclear weapons are also clearly fixed,” Putin said, adding that Moscow would consider such a move if it detected the start of a massive launch of missiles, aircraft or drones against it. Russia reserved the right to also use nuclear weapons if it or ally Belarus were the subject of aggression, including by conventional weapons, Putin said. Putin said the clarifications were carefully calibrated and commensurate with the modern military threats facing Russia – confirmation that the nuclear doctrine was changing. Russia’s current published nuclear doctrine, set out in a 2020 decree by Putin, says Russia may use nuclear weapons in case of a nuclear attack by an enemy or a conventional attack that threatens the existence of the state. The innovations outlined by Putin include a widening of the threats under which Russia would consider a nuclear strike, the inclusion of ally Belarus under the nuclear umbrella and the idea that a rival nuclear power supporting a conventional strike on Russia would also be considered to be attacking it. The United States in 2022 was so concerned about the possible use of tactical nuclear weapons by Russia that it warned Putin over the consequences of using such weapons, according to Central Intelligence Agency Director Bill Burns.

The Actual Electoral Map Is Three States – If the former president wins the East Coast trio of Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Georgia, he will go back to the White House. PHILADELPHIA — There are really only three states that will decide the presidential election: Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Georgia. If Vice President Kamala Harris can’t carry Pennsylvania, her only hope is on a Southern strategy. Harris must win either Georgia or North Carolina. She has no other path to the White House. Telegram will now hand over IP addresses, phone numbers of suspects to cops – Maybe a spell in a French cell changed Durov’s mind In a volte-face, Telegram CEO Pavel Durov announced that the made-in-Russia messaging platform will become a lot less cozy for criminals. “We have updated our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, ensuring they are consistent across the world,” Durov said. “We’ve made it clear that the IP addresses and phone numbers of those who violate our rules can be disclosed to relevant authorities in response to valid legal requests.” A glance at current and past terms and conditions for the service, which offers private and public instant messaging, finds that the original fine print reads, “If Telegram receives a court order that confirms you’re a terror suspect, we may disclose your IP address and phone number to the relevant authorities. So far, this has never happened.” This has now changed to: “If Telegram receives a valid order from the relevant judicial authorities that confirms you’re a suspect in a case involving criminal activities that violate the Telegram Terms of Service, we will perform a legal analysis of the request and may disclose your IP address and phone number to the relevant authorities.” As you can see, a shift from cooperating with terror investigations to criminal probes in general. This is fairly significant as Telegram pretty much billed itself as a haven for those avoiding government surveillance and investigations. It offer a degree of end-to-end encryption for its users – more on that below – and organized its IT infrastructure around the world to effectively resist handing over information about its users to the authorities, which made it a destination for all kinds of netizens, good and bad.
