New policy to build on allotments. Letter of Jeremy Corbyn  The loss of allotments makes us all poorer By Jeremy Corbyn News that Angela Rayner may approve allotment sales will fill many with deep dismay. Allotments have always been under threat from developers. Now, that threat seems to have government backing, which makes the future of these precious spaces even more perilous. Those advising government and local authorities should have some regard for the troubled history of land ownership, and the struggle over access by those who simply want to grow their own crops. The debate goes back to the English Civil War, when the King wanted to secure control of the land he had gained, while Cromwell claimed to speak for the farmers. In truth, it was the Diggers who were the real revolutionaries. They wanted land to be in common ownership. Despite the restoration of the monarchy, huge areas of land were known as the Commons and survived for almost another two centuries. That is, until the greed of big landowners won out once again. The Enclosure Acts, one of the most grotesque abuses of power by Parliament, took away the growing and grazing rights of the rural poor. A monstrous attack on working-class life, the enclosures represented the widespread theft of public land, sanctioned by a parliament that was dominated by landowners. The rural poor, left with nothing and facing starvation, were forced to migrate to industrial cities. It was in these rapidly growing industrial cities – notably in Birmingham – that allotments started to grow. Allotments, then, grew out of opposition to enclosures and the privatisation of common land. Allotments were regulated in the late 19th and 20th century and, even though numbers have since fallen, there are about 330,000 allotment plots. At least 100,000 people are on waiting lists. ‘Once lost, they never return’ Allotments have been crucial in times of national stress. Many came out of the Second World War. Indeed, many that were established in the First World War, such as the one I enjoy in north London, have survived to this day. Once lost, they never return. Their loss makes us all poorer, as we become more and more detached from how food is grown and how nature interacts with us. Allotments provide a vital space for community cohesion, biodiversity and social solidarity. These parcels of land, that cannot be individually fenced, provide growing space for many people. Many people have no access to their own garden, and an allotment gives them the opportunity to grow vegetables and fruit and observe nature. Allotments are particularly important for people who experience stress and mental health problems. I speak to many people who would love access to them for this very reason. Property developers have always had their eyes on these parcels of land. Together with local authorities, they construct various arguments for building over them. Instead of contemplating sales of these wonderful spaces, the Government should be encouraging the growth of allotments, or where there is insufficient land, the growth of community and school gardens. In my own borough of Islington, community gardens have played a vital role in bringing the community together and encouraging sustainable food production. Of course, social housing is desperately needed, but we need not sacrifice these vital green spaces to build it. We can build on ex-industrial land and take over empty properties. Even then, we should ensure social housing is accompanied by community gardens and adequate growing space. Is this Government going to put the nail in the coffin of the joy of digging ground for potatoes on a cold, wet February Sunday afternoon? The battle for the grass roots is on! Rushanara Ali, Housing Minister, resigns after evicting tenants then raising rent on house by £700.00/month .  Homelessness minister resigns after ‘forcing out tenants from east London townhouse and raising rent by £700’ Rushanara Ali reportedly increased living costs on the four-bedroom property near the Olympic Village to £4,000 a month Labour’s homelessness minister has resigned from government after it was revealed she evicted four tenants from an east London townhouse — before hiking the rent by hundreds of pounds per month. Rushanara Ali, 50, is said to have increased living costs on the four-bedroom property from £3,300 to £4,000, after telling the previous tenants their lease would not be renewed. In a letter to Sir Keir Starmer, she insisted she had “at all times” followed “all legal requirements” and taken her responsibilities “seriously” but quit as to not be a “distraction”. In response, the Prime Minister thanked Ms Ali for her “diligent work” at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. The occupants at the home, just a short distance from the Olympic Park, were reportedly handed a four months eviction notice last November. Weeks after they had left the property, it had been re-listed with the rent £700 a month higher than before, the i reports. A source close to the Labour MP for Bethnal Green and Stepney told the i the occupants were told their fixed-term tenancy would not be renewed and offered a rolling contract while the house was on the market, but chose to leave. The property returned to the renters’ market for £700 more a month than the previous rent when a buyer could not be found. Ms Ali has previously criticised “private renters being exploited”. She has also said the Labour government would “empower people to challenge unreasonable rent increases”. The government’s upcoming Renters’ Rights Bill will prevent landlords who have ended a tenancy to sell a property from then re-listing it with higher rent until six months or more after its occupants have left. The property is listed for sale at just under £900,000 and has access to a shared gym and swimming pool. Trying to get that much money from renters is extortion”. The occupants were also told by letting agencies that they would be charged £2,400 for the home to be repainted and professionally cleaned. Landlords are prevented from charging tenants for professional cleaning under the Tenant Fees Act 2019. It is understood the charges were dropped after Ms Ali was told of them. Shadow housing secretary James Cleverley said the allegations “would be an example of the most extreme hypocrisy and she should not have the job as homelessness minister”. A spokesperson for Ms Ali said: “Rushanara takes her responsibilities seriously and complied with all relevant legal requirements.”

The Environment Agency has placed much of the Harbourside into the highest flood risk zone, with a “significant and unacceptable risk to life” for residents and users. Further, the Bristol City Council recently passed a cross-party motion to protect all green spaces from destructive development.   They claim to be getting £2m from a central Brownfields Fund when a Council debate showed that Baltic Wharf is far from a brownfield site. We got 3000 signatures for a petition demanding they use only the official NPPR definition of brownfield. There is no history of any buildings here. It was a lumber yard for shipbuilding. Marvin forced it through during the elections because he knew the Greens would cave in, not wanting to be seen as nimbys against housebuilding. It’s not too late to challenge this illegality now, with a Green-led council. Baltic Wharf is the Trojan Horse which opens the floodgates to the destruction of our historic Harbourside. Is it possible to stop privatisation? Tesla board awards $29bn of shares to Elon Musk The award is worth about $29bn based on Friday’s closing share price. Musk is worth $350bn, according to the Bloomberg billionaires index. Over the past year, Musk has become embroiled in US politics and a political relationship with Donald Trump that turned toxic after the president entered the White House for the second time, a feat assisted by the Tesla chief executive’s financial and personal support. The furore put off left-leaning Tesla buyers inside and outside the US, though competition in the electric car market has also affected sales. A survey from the research firm S&P Global Mobility shared with Reuters showed that Tesla’s customer loyalty has plunged since Musk endorsed Trump. It found 49.9% of Tesla-owning households in the market for a new car bought another Tesla last March. This was just below the industry average, but was down from 73% in June 2024. It edged back up to 57.4% in May this year. Chief executive will pay $2bn to buy stock in the carmaker at 2018 price after court rules against pay deal Tesla’s board has approved the award of $29bn (£22bn) worth of shares to its chief executive, Elon Musk, after a US court ruled against a previous pay deal for the world’s richest person. Musk will pay $2bn to buy 96m shares in the electric carmaker at the same price per share as a 10-year pay package agreed in 2018, which is stuck in legal limbo awaiting a court date for an appeal. The award was based on a recommendation from a “special committee” of the board. The announcement in a financial filing was accompanied by a shareholder letter from two members of the committee, Robyn Denholm, Tesla’s chair, and Kathleen Wilson-Thompson. It described the award as a “good faith” payment to Musk after the previous pay deal, worth $56bn, was rescinded in 2024 by a judge in Delaware, where the company was incorporated until June that year.

Online Safety Bill – we need a better press. Ali Mc Forever – who’s writing these laws – Carnegie – Robber Barons. Regulatory capture. Philanthropists or oligarchs.  The new book-banning. Even if the act’s proponents were interested in protecting children, this would not be the way to do it. The underlying logic of the Online Safety Act is that shielding young people from unsavoury, objectionable or difficult content – rather than teaching them how to engage with it critically – is a necessary act of protection. This rhetoric joins the ranks of book-banning and abstinence-based sex education by infringing on young people’s right to information, privacy, and expression – rights enshrined in the 1989 UN convention on the rights of the child, which the UK has signed. Today’s moral panic around social media and youth owes much to Jonathan Haidt’s The Anxious Generation, which claims that smartphones and social media have “rewired” children’s brains and exacerbated their mental health. As has been widely pointed out, Haidt is not an expert on child development or online harms, and the scientific community has thoroughly refuted his book for its sensationalism and reactionary undertones. Yet Haidt’s pop psychology book continues to be referenced by Ofcom. How then to address the various crises – mental health, for one – that our young people are suffering, and which social media appears to contribute to? Well, ask them: in 2024, Crisis Textline, a mental health hotline that provides free, confidential support text in English or Spanish to young people globally, asked its adolescent users what they need to cope with crises. The number one response? More opportunities for social connection, which age verification does nothing but restrict. The real and perhaps only winners of the Online Safety Act are not children, but tech companies. Take the age verification vendors. As content moderation scholar Eric Goldman writes, platform companies will outsource age verification to specialised vendors in an effort to comply with the act. This means that a small number of age verification vendors will have access to users’ personal data, which they can monetise into consumer profiles. These vendors also stand to gain lucrative contracts with big platform companies and government agencies as the market for digital identity verification expands. Unsurprisingly, the Age Verification Providers Association has been a key driver of the act. Meanwhile, the tech industry will continue expanding its extraction of our personal data, feeding its surveillance business model that, for example, creates targeted advertising that coerces kids into sports gambling or mines their facial data to train models. An online safety regulation that actually centred young people’s wellbeing would go after the tech industry’s predatory business model for starters. Ofcom has set a dangerous precedent. There is a wave of child online safety legislation around the world that will be emboldened by the UK’s move. Australia led this wave last year by passing the social media minimum age restriction, which will go into effect this December. In the US, the Kids Online Safety Act was passed in the Senate but voted down by the House last year, though several states have already passed age verification laws, with more set to join. The Malaysian government passed its Online Safety Act in 2024. Canada’s is currently under review. There is a glaring contradiction here. The preoccupation with online safety, divorced from young people’s real lives, distracts politicians from being held accountable for the ruthless cuts they are making to education, healthcare and domestic violence shelters – things that would actually improve children’s mental health. Child safety is too urgent and serious an issue to be made into a Trojan Horse for authoritarianism. Responsible adults must redirect their moral panic to what actually matters: improving young people’s lives. The war-battered Gaza Strip is on the brink of “irreversible humanitarian collapse” it was claimed today as at least 41 Palestinians were killed since dawn. More info Gaza’s health officials said there have been six new deaths of locals from starvation or malnutrition, including a child, bringing the starvation toll to 184, including 94 children. Aid workers say desperation is so severe that many residents risk approaching aid hubs despite fears of Israeli fire and being killed or wounded. A local aid worker told al-Jazeera:“People are exhausted, malnourished and still willing to risk their lives to find food for their families.” And an aid official reportedly claimed Gaza is “spiraling into collapse” without a ceasefire, adding: “The situation is beyond catastrophic.” Six hundred retired Israeli security officials, including former heads of intelligence agencies, have asked US President Donald Trump to pressure Israel into ending war in Gaza. They said in a statement: “It is our professional judgement that Hamas no longer poses a strategic threat to Israel. Your credibility with the vast majority of Israelis augments your ability to steer Prime Minister Netanyahu and his government in the right direction: End the war, return the hostages, stop the suffering.”

Huda Ammori Wins a Judicial Review of Palestine Action Proscription 114 Instead a court-appointed “Special Advocate” is supposed to represent their interests, without being allowed to tell them what the accusations are. Nor can they tell the special advocate what points to make, as in “we absolutely have no foreign funding and have never had any contact with any foreign intelligence agencies”. Nobody is ever allowed to know what a “Special Advocate” actually does or says in the closed session, nor what the government lawyers or those giving evidence on behalf of the security services do or say. If I were a Special Advocate, I would do nothing except hand the judge a copy of the Dossier on Iraqi Weapons of Mass Destruction, and say: “This shows the quality of security service intelligence. Now go and wipe your arse with it.” Having told us there had been a closed evidence process, Judge Chamberlain then gave us what he said would be a brief summary of his judgment. The link is to the full judgment. Chamberlain said that the claimant (Huda Ammori) had introduced evidence of police action against people expressing in various ways support for the Palestinian cause. There was also evidence of people deliberately breaking the law on support for proscribed organisations. The Home Secretary had submitted that the correct route for an appeal against proscription was to POAC (the Proscribed Organisations Appeals Commission). The Claimant had responded that this would take too long, until June 2026 at the earliest. There were five reasons that POAC might not be a viable alternative remedy to a judicial review: 1) Timing – the POAC process could not conclude before mid-2026. 2) The impact on freedom of expression and assembly while the proscription remained in force. 3) There would be numerous criminal proceedings over support for Palestine Action in magistrates’ courts and crown courts up and down the country, in each of which it might be argued that the proscription was itself unlawful. There was a danger of conflicting judgments in different localities. 4) The legislation did not specify that an appeal against proscription could only be through POAC. 5) A judicial review did not close off an eventual process through POAC. In assessing that a judicial review was a permissible route, he had declined to follow the judgment over the Kurdish Workers’ Party, because new court procedures (the Special Advocate nonsense) now permitted the courts to handle intelligence material, which they did not at the time of that case. Plus, that judgment was plainly wrong. This was stated with such offhand disdain as to be striking. Of course judges can differ, but the bland contempt of the phrasing and delivery were unusual: “plainly wrong” to a judge of equal standing. Which brings me to the unavoidable question of Chamberlain’s demeanour. Sometimes my powers as a writer are not equal to the occasion. I have never seen anybody quite as self-satisfied as Chamberlain; he radiates assurance. He is the walking antithesis of impostor syndrome. It is worse than smug: there is a palpable gloat about him. Judges in the Royal Courts are seated on an imposing tiered dais, many feet above the courtroom. Some judges attempt to diminish the distance; this can come over in different ways, from condescension to chumminess to intellectual equality. Chamberlain does not bother. He is quite happy that our only view of him is up his nostrils.

Netanyahu’s bid to fire attorney general blocked by Israel’s top court Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara had repeatedly clashed with Netanyahu over his trial, judicial overhaul, and security interference The High Court of Israel has blocked the government’s attempt on 4 August to fire Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara, ruling that she would retain all her authorities and that no replacement could be appointed until further review. The court’s decision came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet voted unanimously to dismiss Baharav-Miara, who is leading his prosecution in a long-running corruption trial. The cabinet decision was announced by Justice Minister Yariv Levin, who wrote to Baharav-Miara that she “should not try to impose herself on a government that has no trust in her and cannot work with her effectively.” The court ruling followed urgent petitions from opposition parties and civil groups, including the Movement for Quality Government in Israel, which said the vote had turned the role of attorney general into a “political appointment.” A court hearing is expected within 30 days. This marks the first time any Israeli government has attempted to fire an attorney general. In a letter to ministers hours before the vote, Baharav-Miara called the move “unlawful” and accused Levin of seeking a compliant legal advisor who would back efforts to exempt ultra-Orthodox yeshiva students from conscription and interfere in police investigations. She warned that her dismissal could influence Netanyahu’s trial and investigations involving his ministers and associates. The vote, postponed from the previous week, followed a ministerial committee hearing which Baharav-Miara refused to attend, saying participation would lend legitimacy to a foregone conclusion.

I saw the court case as an opportunity to communicate and to find out whether the justice system is just. It did not matter that I’d never stepped inside a court room in my life. I received a lot of earache from those who feared for my future security and many people offered their support, for which I am grateful beyond words. Building and presenting my case was a true communal effort that forged new relationships. A healthy dose of reading and long discussions about Roman and Common Law kept me occupied while I Occupied. Research and strategy planning often went on right through the night. A relative stranger offered to assist me, I said “Why not?” and things started to fall into place. We referred to each other as ‘unlearned friends’. I arrived in court with no suit, bad breath, barely any sleep and fear in my belly. Then, out of nowhere, an upsurge of optimism rinsed away the what-have-I-done, rabbit-in-headlight state. According to the City of London Corporation their issue with the Occupy LSX camp has nothing to do with our call for transparency with regards to their financial dealings and undemocratic institutions. It has nothing to do with the reasons for encampment, nothing to do with the just cause, nothing to do with our challenge to the value system that benefits a small number of the global population. No, all the City is concerned about – so they say – is the tents, duvets, sleeping bags and pillows. The pristine buildings filled with people wearing smart attire are not used to dealing with a public who are there to do something more than sightsee.

The appeal was made in a letter sent to Trump on Sunday. Its signatories include former Mossad chief Tamir Pardo, former Shin Bet chief Ami Ayalon and former deputy Israeli army chief Matan Vilnai. They called for pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to end the nearly two-year conflict, which has devastated Gaza. The letter was sent as a furore grows over videos released by Palestinian groups showing two emaciated Israeli captives held in Gaza, where more than two million Palestinians are struggling to survive the starvation crisis. “Everything that could be achieved by force has been achieved. The hostages cannot wait any longer,” the Commanders for Israel’s Security (CIS) group said in a post on X, where it shared the letter. The letter said the Israeli army has achieved two of its three objectives by force, “dismantling Hamas’ military formations and governance”, but the third, bringing back all Israeli captives, can “only be achieved through a deal”. “Stop the Gaza War! On behalf of CIS, Israel’s largest group of former [military] generals and Mossad, Shin Bet, Police, and Diplomatic Corps equivalents, we urge you to end the Gaza war,” the letter read. “You did it in Lebanon. Time to do it in Gaza as well,” it added.

Richard Dannatt, an ex-army chief who works as an adviser to Teledyne Technologies, wrote to two Home Office ministers urging them to crackdown on activists after they targeted a factory belonging to the company in 2022 over sales of military equipment to Israel. Four activists were convicted of conspiring to damage Teledyne’s factory in Presteigne, Wales, after they broke into the premises and caused £1m ($1.33m) worth of damage, according to prosecutors. Dannatt wrote to then Home Secretary Suella Braverman after speaking with the factory’s general manager and another senior Teledyne member on 22 December 2022, warning that “the threat from Palestine Action has more widespread implications for security and the economy within the United Kingdom”. He said he would be “very grateful to receive assurance that the threat from Palestine Action is fully recognised by our security services and appropriate action [is] either planned or being taken”. Dannatt added that he had “undertaken to brief the Teledyne main board in the United States that the threat from Palestine Action in the UK is being suitably addressed”. In September 2024, Dannatt contacted Dan Jarvis, Labour security minister, citing renewed “attacks on Teledyne facilities”, and saying he would be “very grateful to receive assurance from the current government that the threat posed by Palestine Action continues to be fully recognised by our security services and that appropriate action is being taken”. An ‘invested interest’ Three of the activists who targeted the factory pleaded guilty, while the fourth went to trial. In court in May 2023, Alex Stuart of Dyfed-Powys police, who was in charge of the investigation, expressed concerns that Dannatt was seeking to have some input in the case. Stuart had written to four of his superiors on 19 December 2022 saying that a senior Teledyne executive based in the US “had spoken to Lord Richard Dannatt about Palestine Action”. “Lord Dannatt was chief of the army general staff. He’s now a life peer. He has an invested interest [sic] in this aspect of UK trade and investment, particularly military projects,” Stuart wrote in an email. He said that Dannatt “wants to have some input” in the investigation, adding that he had said “it would not be wise to have a member of the House of Lords poking around in a live criminal case”.

Declassified UK – Senior Israeli Officers training next to Downing St. Israeli army officers have been allowed to study at a British military academy in central London throughout the Gaza genocide, Declassified can reveal. At least two Israeli colonels have attended the prestigious Royal College of Defence Studies (RCDS) since 2023. One of the soldiers, thought to be Elad Edri, only graduated a fortnight ago. Another officer, Yeftah Norkin, completed the course in July 2024 and almost immediately led the army’s “Bang” division in Israel’s invasion of Lebanon. Norkin, who comes from an influential military family, commanded a patrol company in Operation Cast Lead, Israel’s 2008-9 war in Gaza which killed hundreds of children. ‘Rising stars’ Established in 1927 as the Imperial Defence College, the RCDS in Belgravia is one of Britain’s most eminent military academies. From its elegant Georgian building ringed by embassies, the college organises training for “rising stars” among the officer class from the UK and abroad. While Sandhurst teaches junior army officers, the RCDS mentors mid-ranking troops who have ambitions to climb the chain of command, awarding them a post-graduate certificate in international security studies. The college describes itself as “a world-renowned institution committed to developing strategic thinkers… who have the potential to reach the highest ranks”. RCDS alumni include Major General Hidai Zilberman, the former IDF spokesperson and now Israeli defence attaché to the US, and General Harel Knfao, who served as Chief of Staff of Israel’s Southern Command.

ACORN take over science centre in demonstration Union ACORN occupied science centre We The Curious on Saturday as part of a protest against the centre hosting an insurer linked to Israeli companies. There were more than 80 members of ACORN involved, including parents and their children. The group say they were made aware by staff members that We The Curious had allowed for AXA insurers to use their events space for a conference. AXA insurers have continuously been condemned by protesters for investing in companies that sell weapons to Israel. ACORN took control of the entrances and let families enter for free In an email to the centres’ CEO Donna Speed, the group said they were “outraged” that they were “supporting arms companies selling weapons to Israel, while Israel commits genocide against Palestinians.” The group also cited a plaque in the museum that “celebrated Leonardo UK as a sponsor,” despite Leonardo UK making “F35 fighter jet parts that have been sold to Israel and used in Israel’s genocidal campaign in Gaza.” The group went into the centre and demanded that as a result of these ties, visitors would enter the centre for free that day. Blocking some of the entrances they say that more than 480 visitors were able to visit for free. Avon and Somerset Police were called to the centre at 1.47pm. A spokesperson said that: “Officers attended to enable a peaceful protest and found a group of about 40 people gathered.” Protesters gathered outside. James Baldwin of ACORN said: “The children are always ours, every single one of them, all over the globe; and I am beginning to suspect that whoever is incapable of recognising this may be incapable of morality. “We will not rest or stand by while you continue to work with arms companies that are complicit in the mass murder of Palestinian children. “We will use all our power to expose your unethical and immoral behaviour, until you reassess your position. “We, the people of Bristol, are capable of morality, and it is time to show us that you can be.” The group have demanded the following from We The Curious: Stop taking funds from all arms companies, including in particular those profiting from Israel’s genocide in Palestine Donate the money you received from Leonardo UK to a charity supporting Palestinians, such as Medical Aid for Palestinians State publicly that you are refusing to take funds from arms companies, and calling on other institutions in our city to do the same Sign up to Bristol Apartheid Free Zone We The Curious closed early and protesters left at 3.45pm.

Sky News report about a homeless man. Daniel Wren, a carpenter who, despite working, is unable to afford a place to live, highlighting the stark reality of working homelessness in Britain today. Daniel Wren has fallen on hard times and he is among a growing population of rough sleepers. His demographic, someone in the twilight of his working life, is one that homeless charities are increasingly concerned about. ‘You don’t think the bubble will burst’: The carpenter rough sleeping on trains The hours after midnight allow Daniel Wren the chance to drift off to sleep while the trains are empty. He can nap for 45 minutes from Croydon to London Bridge, then back, 45 minutes more sleep, then repeat. From 1am to 5am – which he calls the “zombie hours” – Daniel naps and swaps trains, trams and buses until, as the public returns, he becomes a commuter on his way to work. The 56-year-old is a working carpenter who has fallen on hard times, and he is among a growing population of rough sleepers. His demographic, someone in the twilight of his working life, is one that homeless charities are increasingly concerned about. “You’ve been working hard all your life – you don’t think the bubble is going to burst,” says Daniel, carrying his fresh laundry from the crisis centre, where he has also showered. He does not look homeless. Conscious of the stigma, he says he is “incognito homeless”. Daniel wants to blend in and “stay under the radar”. Older generation ‘no longer safe from housing crisis’ Figures released by the Combined Homelessness and Information Network show that the number of people considered to be living on the streets in London is up 26% on last year, and has doubled in the past 10 years. This is despite a pledge from the previous government to end rough sleeping, and this government offering to develop a cross-government strategy to tackle the problem. Daniel’s road to homelessness was complex. He took a period off work to look after his sick father, whose death left Daniel without a home to fall back on. He later had his van broken into and had to endure aggressive flatmates in a multi-occupancy house from which he was ultimately evicted. Then, while Daniel was staying in B&Bs, an employer failed to pay him for a job. He is still trying to work. “The problem with my kind of work is if you’re not focused on that specific detail, you make mistakes,” he says. “Me not being about to work skilfully through lack of sleep, lack of washing facilities and lack of food, there comes a point when I’m a liability.” A new study by homelessness charity Crisis found that among older low-income earners, one in five feared homelessness in their retirement, and many say they cannot afford to stop working. “A generation once thought to be safe from our housing crisis is now increasingly being swept up in it and at real risk of homelessness,” it concludes. Francesca Albanese, executive director of policy and social change at Crisis, told Sky News: “Most people are thinking they will go into later life with savings and security, and actually the cost of housing alongside lower wages is meaning that for lots more people that just isn’t an option.”

ACORN return to bailiffs to protest ‘harassment and intimidation’ ACORN members in Bristol have been protesting outside a bailiffs for the second time in less than a month. Around 20 members gathered outside the offices of Able Enforcements in St Anne’s to protest again alleged “harassment and intimidation”. The group blocked access to their offices, after contacting the companies who operate from the same building ahead of the action, explaining the situation and encouraging them to work from home. ACORN Bristol, a community union of low to moderate income people, recently began a campaign against bailiff use in the city called Boot the Bailiffs. The campaign is against councils using bailiffs to collect council tax and demanding they implement a more humane debt management system A freedom of information request filed by the union found that one in eight Bristolian households had bailiffs sent round for council tax debts alone. As of October 18 2024, the outstanding Council Tax balances was £27,146. Members of ACORN reported that despite the council’s supposedly ‘ethical’ debt collection policy, vulnerable people were regularly getting bailiff visits, indicating that the council’s policy doesn’t work, and isn’t fit for purpose. While not referring to Able Enforcements, ACORN have said that one ACORN member Lee, a vulnerable mum in just £114 of debt to the council, was told by a bailiff two weeks ago that her medically proven vulnerability “doesn’t matter” and was refused the option of setting up an affordable payment plan until ACORN stepped in.

Bristol council accused of ‘secrecy’ after quiet attempt to overturn order An activist claimed the council “keeps covering stuff up and it just looks terrible” A top council lawyer has taken the unprecedented step of appealing an enforcement notice from a regulator to improve transparency. Persistent failures to provide the public with information within legal time limits has caused Bristol councillors to raise fears about a culture of secrecy. Last year the Information Commissioner’s Office ordered Bristol City Council to get better at responding to freedom of information requests (FoIs). The watchdog said Bristol was “consistently” one of the councils which had sparked the most complaints about FoIs in recent years. Tim O’Gara, director of legal and democratic services, was grilled by councillors on the audit committee on Monday, July 28, about the enforcement. He faced questions over why he chose to appeal, if any politician was involved in the decision, and why councillors weren’t told sooner. Article continues below He said: “It wouldn’t be appropriate to comment on live legal proceedings. The decision to appeal the enforcement notice was made by me. Under the council’s constitution, I’m responsible for instituting and defending legal proceedings. I did that based on legal advice. “We’re waiting probably longer than we thought we would be waiting. We will report back in due course as and when we receive a judgement. It’s not a political consideration whether or not I institute or defend legal proceedings. We do that day in, day out.” This could be the first time a public authority has ever appealed an enforcement notice from the Information Commissioner, according to one expert. Writing on LinkedIn last year, Jon Baines, senior data protection specialist at Mischon de Reya, said: “As far as I can recall that will be the first ever appeal of an FoI enforcement notice to go to First-tier Tribunal.” The First-tier Tribunal is a court that hears appeals and disputes, including decisions from the Information Commissioner. The appeal has not been resolved, more than a year since it was made. The enforcement notice has also been removed from the Information Commissioner’s website. Anybody can legally request information held by the council, or another public authority, to ensure access to information for the public. While there are some exemptions, the council has a legal duty to provide any data that’s requested within four weeks — but it often doesn’t do so. Green Councillor David Wilcox said: “I’ve been on audit for four years now. Why is this the first time we’ve heard that the ICO is contesting our work as a council? I would have thought that would come to audit in some way, as it’s a reputational risk for the council.” Green Cllr Ellie Freeman added: “FoI requests are a really big part of how the public interact with us. This is all slightly concerning. This is a key part of how we operate as a council.” The decision to appeal the enforcement notice is unlikely to help with the perspective of some campaigners that the council could be more transparent. Freedom of information requests are often not answered due to the risk of “damaging commercial relationships”, such as a request asking for the business plan of the huge City Leap deal between the council and an energy firm. Speaking to the audit committee, Dan Ackroyd, a democracy activist, said: “Reform is coming. This council looks corrupt because you keep covering stuff up and it just looks terrible, month after month after month. Why are you allowing this situation to continue? It’s ridiculous.” Internal auditors at the council found responses to FoI requests faced a significant backlog. Half of the backlog sits within four service areas, but councillors weren’t told which ones. There is no up-to-date action plan to address the enforcement notice if the appeal is unsuccessful. But new staff will soon be recruited to help address the backlog and speed up responses to FoI requests…

This scenario was discussed at a recent secret meeting in the Alps, the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service revealed on Tuesday. Here’s what you need to know: Until February 2024, Zaluzhny served as the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He became notorious for organizing meat grinders for Ukrainian troops. In March 2024, after clashing with Zelensky over military decisions, Zaluzhny was removed and appointed Ukraine’s ambassador to London. As Ukraine’s ambassador, Zaluzhny revealed a new deal with the UK: 5,000 to 7,000 Ukrainian students will reportedly study in the UK annually, eventually becoming future officials in Ukraine. As of January 2025, Zaluzhny held first place in the trust rating of Ukrainian residents. According to Socis, the former commander-in-chief enjoyed the trust of almost 72% of Ukrainians. Most recently, Vogue published Zaluzhny’s column that outlines his “vision for Ukraine’s future.” After Zelensky’s 2022 Vogue feature boosted his Western image, Zaluzhny’s appearance in the fashion mag is most likely a political PR move.

The former Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and now a diplomat, Valeriy Zaluzhny, wrote a column for the glamorous edition of Vogue. Quite calm reflections on the Russified military towns of the 1970s, female volunteers, and his first traditional embroidered shirt in adulthood once again caused heated discussions. The main counterargument that I saw from those who follow any of Zaluzhnyi’s public outings sounded like this: “Some people are dying, and some are doing modeling. Now is not time.” Let’s not forget that in the fall of 2023, the then-current Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces wrote a detailed article for The Economist about the challenges of war and the need for new technologies. Then Bankova was so jealous of the crazy citation rate of that material that in the end it resulted in a very insidious dismissal with further nonsense and a campaign of hate in the court telegram channels. Because no matter what Zaluzhnyi does — even when he posts a family photo without captions — it will bother the minds that will want to find the rot and tell it on white walls.

Washington, DC – The images of emaciated children coming out of Gaza have moved some of Israel’s staunchest supporters in the United States Congress to decry the humanitarian situation in the besieged Palestinian territory ravaged by Israeli-imposed starvation. Some Democratic lawmakers pointedly condemned Israel over the past few days, slamming the US and Israeli-backed GHF food distribution mechanism that has led to the killing of more than 1,000 Palestinian aid seekers. But others issued vague statements calling for aid to enter Gaza without directly blaming Israeli policies. “This is the reality: Having already killed or wounded 200,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, the extremist Israeli government is using mass starvation to engineer the ethnic cleansing of Gaza,” progressive Senator Bernie Sanders said in a statement late on Friday. He accused the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of carrying out an “extermination” campaign in Gaza. The anger threatens to shake the strong bipartisan support that Israel has enjoyed for decades in Congress, which authorises the billions in military aid that the staunch US ally receives from Washington annually. But so far, there does not appear to be a significant push to impose actual consequences on the Israeli government for its forced mass hunger campaign in Gaza. Only a handful of progressive congressmembers have accused Israel of genocide in Gaza, of an effort to destroy the Palestinian people. But leading rights groups and UN experts have concluded that the Israeli military campaign is genocidal. “Israel has the ability and the means to deliver adequate food to the Palestinians,” Garamendi said in a statement. “They also have the obligation under international law to deliver it; it’s the choice of Prime Minister Netanyahu not to feed Gaza.” Numerous Israeli officials have publicly said that they aim to cut off aid to Gaza and force all Palestinians to leave the territory, effectively promoting ethic cleansing. Many have suggested that there are no innocent people in the enclave. Earlier this week, Israeli Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu appeared to confirm that his country is purposely starving Gaza, saying that “there is no nation that feeds its enemies.” “The government is racing ahead for Gaza to be wiped out,” Eliyahu said in a radio interview, according to The Times of Israel. According to Gaza’s health authorities, at least 127 Palestinians have died of malnutrition in the enclave, including five on Saturday.

80th anniversary of nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. CND groups across the country will mark the 80th anniversary of the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Lord Peter Hain on how Palestine Action are not terrorists – just prosecute them for criminal damage instead. The Labour peer Peter Hain, who was a leading anti-apartheid campaigner in the UK and who led the direct action protests that disrupted South African rugby and cricket tours in 1969 and 1970, has told peers that he is “deeply ashamed” that his party is banning Palestine Action. He was speaking in a Lords debate to approve the order banning the group. Peers have just voted, and the amendment condeming the ban was voted down, by 144 votes to 16. Mandela even remained on the US terrorism watchlist until 2008, many years after becoming South Africa’s first democratically elected president and receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. After his African National Congress had been banned, Nelson Mandela was convicted for sabotage and conspiracy to overthrow the apartheid government when he backed armed struggle despite strongly opposing the very essence of terrorism: namely violent and indiscriminate attacks on innocent civilians. Nevertheless, he became a global icon and in 1996 President Mandela addressed both Houses of this Parliament in Westminster Hall. Hain said the suffragettes would have been banned under the same logic, The suffragettes too have gained iconic status, treated as heroines today. Yet they could have been suppressed under this proscription. They used violence against property in a strategic manner to demand voting rights for women as part of civil disobedience protests when their peaceful protests seemed futile. They intended to highlight the injustice of denying women the vote and to provoke a reaction that kept the issue in the public eye. Like Nelson Mandela, they were vilified at the time, including in strident denunciations by members of this house … They even hid small homemade bombs inside mailboxes and attempted to bomb Westminster Abbey and Prime Minister David Lloyd George’s uncompleted house.

We’ll get to him, too.” A few weeks later, Rabin was assassinated by an Israeli ultranationalist at a rally in support of the peace agreement and the planned withdrawal from Palestinian territory. Ben-Gvir was also notorious for displaying on his wall a picture of Baruch Goldstein, the American Israeli who massacred 29 Palestinian worshippers in Hebron in 1994. Since winning a Knesset seat, he has pulled a gun on Palestinian parking attendants in Tel Aviv – over which he was interrogated by police – and gotten into a dispute with legislator Ayman Odeh, a Palestinian citizen of Israel, when Odeh blocked him from the hospital room of a Palestinian prisoner on hunger strike. Last November, Ben-Gvir went to the occupied East Jerusalem neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarrah, where Israeli authorities were attempting to evict Palestinian families, with a group of settlers who slashed Palestinians’ car tyres and tried to storm one family’s home. When Palestinians responded by throwing stones, he pulled out a gun, despite the police presence at the scene. Netanyahu’s decision to bring Ben-Gvir in, “straight from the fringes of the radical and lunatic right-wing to the heart of political life and to turn him into a hero”, was lamented by former minister Limor Livnat last year. Livnat, from the right-wing Likud party, wrote in a newspaper that a “real Likudnik won’t vote Likud” in the lead-up to the elections. Ehud Barak, a former Labour party prime minister, prophesied “dark days” if Ben-Gvir entered government, while left-wing Meretz leader Zehava Galon said the elections would “determine whether there will be a free country here or a Jewish theocracy”. Ben-Gvir’s comments last week have received widespread condemnation. Some Israeli journalists reacted with outrage on social media over Ben-Gvir’s comments, pointing out that he was acknowledging apartheid on air.

Uh now the smaller bombs the small and the medium do seem to have been tested The earliest successful reported test uh was from October 1944 on the Baltic coast And we have reports from a number of independent sources of this test So it’s quite impressive We have reports from Axis observers who were on the ground monitoring this test from a bunker nearby We have reports from access observers who are assigned to be in the air observing this test We have reports from the OSS We have reports from the Manhattan project We have a number of different reports on this The second apparent test happened about a month or so later in Poland And again we have a number of reports on this Uh according to these reports it appears that the Germans uh unfortunately used uh humans as guinea pigs They wanted to test the effect of the nuclear explosion on humans Uh so quite a very tragic event but a number of reports describing this And then the final tests seem to have occurred in Thringia in central Germany in March 1945 And again we have quite a number of reports Most of these are uh Soviet intelligence reports that describe this test and describe the design in great detail Uh but they’re also Allied reports from Allied intelligence describing the same thing and from Hinrich Kimler’s agitant describing this as well So quite a number of of reports here Now people always see that and they say great let me grab my geer counter I want to go out and go roaming around Germany in my geer counter and find where they tested this stuff Uh and goodness knows we’d like to do that Uh but from the physics it’s simply not possible uh we know uh from well-known uh nuclear physics that the radioactivity from a nuclear explosion decays over time and here it’s been over 80 years now So after 80 years the radioactivity uh from this nuclear explosion or any of these uh would have dropped by about a factor of a billionfold from what they were immediately after the explosion So if you do the math uh you work out that uh if this actually happened if you were to measure the residual radioactivity at the test site it’d be around 10 to 30 times smaller than the natural background radiation levels So you couldn’t detect it with your trusty Geiger counter Uh and uh you know that’s if everything remained at the test site kind of like Trinity But you know these were tested not in the middle of a desert like Trinity but you know tested in areas where there’s lots of snow and rain and everything So it probably wash stuff all over the place be even harder to detect Uh so it is very hard uh to prove or disprove these uh tests with modern methods Uh but if somebody out there has the resources uh to do this has the money to do this can persuade uh the German government to let them do this I’d love to see somebody try I think it may may be possible to take soil samples from a number of different sites Uh and then since you can’t look for overall radioactivity that’s too low Um do very sensitive laboratory tests Uh and even if you can’t see the fision products maybe you can see other things from the bomb like the very heavy uh natural uranium tamper uh that was blown to smitherines Uh so I’d really love to see

Todd Rider has uncovered evidence that the Allies were preparing mustard gas chemical weapons attacks on Germany ready for the H-Bombs or A-Bombs they Nazis were developing and testing. The December 2, 1943 ‘Bari incident’ in Italy where scores of allied servicemen and civilians were killed by a release of mustard gas after a German bombing raid corroborates what Todd Rider has exposed. The ‘garlic-smell’ Mustard Gas Incident at Bari, Italy – In 1943, Allied Forces and Italian civilians were exposed to mustard gas. This is a short history of the lead up to the incident and its aftermath. Of the more than 617 casualties who suffered from gas exposure at Bari, 83 died. Allied WWII Mustard Gas Disaster—and Cover-up— The German attack at Bari, dubbed ‘little Pearl Harbor,’ unknowingly hit an Allied ship full of poisonous mustard gas bombs. On the night of December 2, 1943, the Germans bombed a key Allied port in Bari, Italy, sinking 17 ships and killing more than 1,000 American and British servicemen and hundreds of civilians. Caught in the surprise World War II air raid was the John Harvey, an American Liberty ship carrying a secret cargo of 2,000 mustard bombs to be used in retaliation if Hitler resorted to gas warfare. The Luftwaffe’s lucky strike, which released a poisonous cloud of sulfur mustard vapor over the harbor—and liquid mustard into the water—prompted an Allied cover-up of the chemical weapons disaster. In the devastating aftermath of the attack, which the press dubbed a “little Pearl Harbor,” U.S. General Dwight D. Eisenhower and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill moved to conceal the truth about the shipment of poison gas, for fear Germany might use it as an excuse to launch an all-out chemical war. As a result of the military secrecy, medical personnel weren’t alerted to the danger of contamination from the liquid mustard that spread insidiously over the harbor, mixing with the tons of fuel oil from the damaged ships. In the crush of casualties that first night, hundreds of survivors, who had jumped or been blown overboard and swam to safety, were mistakenly believed to be suffering from only shock and immersion. They were given morphine, wrapped in warm blankets and left to sit in their oil-soaked uniforms for as long as 12, and even 24 hours, while the seriously wounded were attended to first. It was tantamount to marinating in mustard gas. But all remained ignorant of the peril. By dawn, the patients had developed red, inflamed skin and blisters on their bodies “the size of balloons.” Within 24 hours, the wards were full of men with eyes swollen shut. The doctors suspected some form of chemical irritant, but the patients did not present typical symptoms or respond to standard treatments. The staff’s unease only deepened when notification came from headquarters that the hundreds of burn patients with unusual symptomology would be classified “Dermatitis N.Y.D.“—not yet diagnosed. Then without warning, patients in relatively good condition began dying. These sudden, mysterious deaths left the doctors baffled and at a loss as to how to proceed. Rumors spread that the Germans had used an unknown poison gas. With the daily death toll rising, British officials in Bari placed a “red light” call alerting Allied Force Headquarters (AFHQ) in Algiers to the medical crisis. Lieutenant Colonel Stewart Francis Alexander, a young chemical warfare specialist attached to Eisenhower’s staff, was dispatched immediately to the scene of the disaster. The Investigator’s Findings Were Censored Despite the British port authorities’ denials, Alexander quickly diagnosed mustard gas exposure. Convinced that preoccupation with military security had compounded the tragedy, he doggedly pursued his own investigation to identify the source of the chemical agent and determine how it had poisoned so many men. After carefully studying the medical charts, he plotted the destroyed cargo ships’ positions relative to the gas victims and succeeded in pinpointing the John Harvey as the epicenter of the chemical explosion. When divers pulled up fragments of fractured gas shells, the casings were identified as being from 100-pound American mustard bombs. On December 11, 1943, Alexander informed headquarters of his initial findings. Not only was the gas from the Allies’ own supply, but the victims labeled “Dermatitis N.Y.D.” had suffered prolonged exposure as a result of being immersed in a toxic solution of mustard and oil floating on the surface of the harbor. The response Alexander received was shocking. While Eisenhower accepted his diagnosis, Churchill refused to acknowledge the presence of mustard gas in Bari. With the war in Europe entering a critical phase, the Allies agreed to impose a policy of strict censorship on the chemical disaster: All mention of mustard gas was stricken from the official record, and Alexander’s diagnosis deleted from the medical charts.

A computer engineer turned political blogger, he’s known for writing long screeds that advocate for a radical reform of governance – dismissing America’s democratic values and instead calling for the return of an absolute monarchy. For years, these ideas were buried in the blogosphere, but they began to gain traction after Donald Trump was first elected to the White House. With Mr Trump back in the oval office, some observers think this once niche school of thought is what’s inspiring some of the president’s more controversial policies – from Elon Musk’s DOGE to attacks on elite institutions like Harvard University to the widespread dismantling of DEI programmes. Accelerationists argue that technology, particularly computer technology, and capitalism, particularly the most aggressive, global variety, should be massively sped up and intensified — either because this is the best way forward for humanity, or because there is no alternative. Accelerationists favour automation. They favour the further merging of the digital and the human. They often favour the deregulation of business, and drastically scaled-back government. They believe that people should stop deluding themselves that economic and technological progress can be controlled. They often believe that social and political upheaval has a value in itself. Accelerationalism began life as the British cousin of the Californian philosophy of Extropianism, which also began in the early 1990s (as I wrote here). There’s a similar anarcho-libertarianism, hyper-capitalism, worship of new technology and expectation of a sudden leap beyond the human. But this wasn’t California, it was Coventry — and Accelerationism was much darker and more nihilistic than Californian transhumanism. After all, Land’s first book was called ‘Thirst for Annihilation’. Land has said: ‘I have no interest in human liberation, or liberation of the human species. I’m interested in liberation of the means of production’. In other words, Accelerationism had nothing to do with expanding human potential. This was not Californian self-help. This was about liberating the machine from the human. Accelerationism aimed to push capitalism further and faster, until it’s just machines whirring round in a lifeless universe. Pure Fordism. The CCRU grew out of cybernetics, and the sense that humans are agents in a world full of other agents — machines, ecosystems, DNA, perhaps demons as well. All these entities have desires. Machines have desires. Why foreground human desires and aspirations? The obvious answer is because we’re human. But that’s not enough for post-human philosophies. For Accelerationists, the aim is the liberation of What Technology Wants. Here’s a quote from a good write-up by Yuxi Lin at LessWrong: our world, with its cars, finances, AI, and other industrial technologies, has a clear goal of its own: a future dominated by more upgraded versions of these technologies, with humans becoming extinct or irrelevant. You can come across this idea in Californian transhumanism / Extropianism too. It’s humans’ glorious destiny to be supplanted by AI machines. But transhumanists typically imagine super-intelligent spiritual machines, far smarter than humans. It’s a worship of intelligence. With Accelerationism, at least in Land’s case, I get the feeling it’s more a misanthropic hatred of the human condition and a desire to annihilate consciousness and replace it with the machine. It’s philosophy as modish death-wish. Pot noodles and black magic The CCRU was an unconventional academic research centre. The Guardian’s Andy Beckett interviewed philosopher Iain Hamilton Grant, a former undergrad in the CCRU, who recalls how Land’s office became a CCRU hub: he had good drugs — skunk [cannabis]. Although it could be grim going in there, once he started living in his office. There would be a tower of Pot Noodles and underwear drying on the radiator, which he had washed in the staff loos. Rather like Tim Leary and Richard Alpert at Harvard, an undergrad personality cult grew up around Land. Another former student, Robin Mackay, recalls: Before I met Land, I already knew of him through the gossip of new undergraduates taken aback by what they had heard on the grapevine: Did Land really claim that he had come back from the dead? Did he really think he was an android sent from the future to terminate human security? In person he belied these outrageous claims (both of which he did indeed make in writing), being thoroughly polite and amiable and, above all, willing to engage in earnest conversation with anyone…He preferred to spend his time in the bar with undergraduates, always buying the drinks, smoking continually, and conversing animatedly (and where possible, vehemently) about any topic whatsoever.

LONDON: The defamation trial between Brigadier (retd) Rashid Naseer and UK-based former army officer Adil Farooq Raja opened today at the Royal Courts of Justice in London. The proceedings, scheduled to continue until July 24, centre on a series of online allegations made by Mr Raja against the retired intelligence officer, which Brigadier Naseer claims are defamatory and untrue. Mr Raja, who runs a YouTube channel and has positioned himself as a whistleblower, is accused of making multiple defamatory statements on social media, including allegations of corruption, electoral interference, judicial manipulation, and human rights abuse, all of which Brigadier Naseer strongly denies. Brigadier Naseer appeared in person in the court, whereas Mr Raha appeared via video link. Mr Raja’s witness former accountability tsar Shehzad Akbar appeared in person, whereas Shaheen Sehbai and Syed Akbar Hussian appeared online from the US. Naseer told the UK High Court that he and his family had faced threats to their lives, harassment, abuse, and serious breaches of privacy following online allegations made by Major (retd) Adil Farooq Raja. Testifying on the opening day of the four-day trial in London, Brigadier Naseer described the personal and professional impact of nearly a dozen online publications made by Mr Raja. He was cross-examined by Simon Harding, counsel for the defendant, while Mr Raja appeared remotely via Zoom. Among Mr Raja’s witnesses were former Assets Recovery Unit (ARU) head Shehzad Akbar, who attended in person, and journalist Shaheen Sehbai and Syed Akbar Hussain, who joined online from the United States. Brigadier Naseer told the court: “False lies were spread about me, posing dangers to me and my family. My daughter had an offer from the King’s College London and so did my son from another UK university, but I was concerned after what Adil Raja did to me and decided to send them to the US for higher studies. I have family and friends in the UK, friends from the UK intelligence I have worked with. In a report published today, it warns that foreign governments are being increasingly bold in attempts to silence and intimidate individuals and communities in the UK. The Joint Committee calls on the Government to do more to protect and support victims. The Government should show leadership to prevent criminal justice mechanisms being exploited by foreign governments to silence dissent. Current support for individuals and communities at risk of transnational repression is inadequate leaving victims unsure of how to get help, the report finds. It calls for improved police training to deal with incidents of TNR and a dedicated reporting line to provide support and triage cases to law enforcement. The number of state-threat investigations run by MI5 has grown by 48% since 2022. Evidence submitted to the inquiry included cases of coercion, online threats and physical violence. The growth of TNR online is a serious concern and needs to be closely monitored. The Committee received credible evidence that a number of states have engaged in acts of transnational repression on UK soil. It received evidence alleging that Bahrain, China, Egypt, Eritrea, India, Iran, Pakistan, Russia, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates have each conducted acts of transnational repression on UK soil.
