Chinese Government announces contraction in industrial activity Beijing – Saba: The Chinese government announced on Friday that industrial activity in the country contracted in October, marking the seventh consecutive month of decline. The National Bureau of Statistics in China stated that the official Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) for the manufacturing sector fell to 49 points in October, compared to 49.8 points in September, a worse-than-expected drop. A reading below 50 indicates contraction in the sector. US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday, following a meeting with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in South Korea, that he would reduce tariffs imposed on China due to fentanyl from 20% to 10%, thereby lowering US tariffs on Chinese goods from 57% to 47%. HSBC economist Taylor Wang stated that the reduction in tariffs on Chinese exports would allow them to “regain more competitiveness in the US market, and we could see some recovery in direct exports to the United States soon.” But Wei Li (pronounced We Lie!), head of multi-asset investment at BNP Paribas Securities Group in China, believes that “despite the progress made in the tariff truce, global uncertainty still casts a shadow over manufacturing confidence,” adding that agreements between Washington and Beijing will likely prevent further deterioration rather than drive a strong recovery.

After graduating from university in 1991 with first class honours in sociology, he worked as a lecturer at Teesside from 1993, a member of the team that established the country’s first single-honours criminology degree. After spells as a senior research fellow at the University of Durham and a researcher and teacher at Northumbria University, he re-joined Teesside in 2010. Professor Hall has published widely in the fields of criminology, social theory, philosophy and history. His current research includes the establishment of firmer links between criminological theory, social theory and philosophy; criminality, subjectivity and consumer culture; comparative homicide rates; violence and the pacification of populations; and violence and masculinity in late modernity. Together with his long-time research and writing partner Simon Winlow, also Professor of Criminology at the Social Futures Institute, Professor Hall has established a global reputation in these fields. In the past he has co-directed ESRC funded research on violence, policing and the night-time economy, which examined the relationship between private and public security in a lucrative sector of the leisure market that was experiencing rapid growth. He has also directed a number of independent and collaborative research projects on criminological theory; violence and masculinity; criminality and consumer culture; and urban riots, all of which are on-going. At the moment he is researching and writing in the areas of social exclusion, social unrest, the ‘pseudo-pacification’ of populations and the importation of the latest philosophical thinking on subjectivity and ideology into the field of criminological theory.

That’s the grim finding of a new report from our allies Tax Justice Network. The British Virgin Islands (BVI), the Cayman Islands and Bermuda came top in the new ranking of corporate tax havens. Tax Justice Network estimates $84 billion of global corporate tax revenue is lost as a result of the British tax havens and the UK every single year. However, it’s hard to know exactly how much money is being avoided in tax as it flows through these places. Secrecy and opaqueness are the name of the game to tax havens. The UK is responsible for this The UK government holds a share of responsibility for this lack of financial transparency. British Overseas Territories – such as the BVI, the Cayman Islands and Bermuda – are subject to UK law in certain circumstances. One example can be found in the 2018 Sanctions and Anti-Money Laundering Act. Our government must act The Sanctions and Anti-Money Laundering Act requires the UK government to support the Overseas Territories to implement public registers of company ownership. Public registers of company ownership tell us which people own or control assets such as shell companies. Having this information is crucial to tackle tax dodging, money laundering and other financial criminality. So far, however, successive governments have failed to make good on the requirements of the Sanctions and Anti-Money Laundering Act. The new government has the opportunity to take a different path and make progress on company transparency in Overseas Territories like the BVI, Cayman Islands and Bermuda. The UK government must set out clear expectations for the BVI and other Overseas Territories to adopt the same transparency measures as the UK itself has. Additionally, Keir Starmer’s administration should go one step further and support global efforts to take action against tax havens – by supporting the UN Tax Convention.

The UK’s new renters’ rights bill aims to enhance tenancy security and strengthen tenant protections in England. Key provisions include extending “Awaab’s Law” to the private rental sector for damp and mould issues, establishing a landlord ombudsman, and creating a private rented sector database. The legislation seeks to abolish “no-fault” Section 21 evictions and end the practice of “rental bidding”, though the effectiveness of the latter in controlling rent prices is questioned. The bill has been criticised for not addressing lengthy court delays for landlord repossessions, which could complicate property recovery for landlords. The reforms are expected to increase costs for landlords, potentially leading some to exit the market, which could impact property prices, tenant rents, and the composition of landlords. The UK’s rental market has changed dramatically over recent decades, with the proportion of renters doubling to 30% since 2000. Over the same period, housing costs have increased far faster than wages. Historically, the rental sector has faced less regulation in the UK than in many other European countries. But now new legislation aims to improve the security of tenancies in England and strengthen tenant protections against environmental hazards. Many elements of the renters’ rights bill are likely to improve the lives of renters without harming landlords. But some of the improvements for tenants will make being a landlord more difficult or even, for some, undesirable. So far, we feel that the proposed measures fall into three groups – the good, the not-so-good, and the complicated. The good A government report from 2023 estimated that 3.6% of private rented properties had serious levels of damp and mould. One section of the bill will extend “Awaab’s law” (named after two-year-old Awaab Ishak, who died as a result of living in a mould-infested home) to the private rental sector, offering protection to tenants in problem properties. Also, a new private rental sector landlord ombudsman will be able to help tenants resolve disputes without slow and costly legal proceedings. The creation of a private rented sector database will improve transparency for tenant and compliance with pre-existing laws by landlords.

Stefan Szczelkun on the plot lands of the 1920s, 1930s in England – you could build your own small house on a piece of land.  Chalet Fields of The Gower (2020) by Stefan Szczelkun”A slump in agricultural profits in the Britain of the 1920s and 30s,and a consequent precipitous drop in the value of land,led to the growth of the “Plotland” movement. Enterprising farmers would divide their fields into small plots which would be rented out or sold outright at low prices to anyone wishing to build a small cabin or chalet on them. The sizes of the plots,and the facilities offered and conditions imposed varied from site-to-site,and what emerged was an eclectic vernacular, relying very much on found or re-purposed items to create buildings which ranged from essentially allotment huts to full-time dwellings. There was a strong independent, even politically radical streak amongst the plotlanders, and this, combined with the ad-hoc nature of construction led to them falling foul of the authorities.The passing of the Town and Country Planning Act in 1947 sounded the death-knell for the movement, and many were compulsorarily purchased and the residents re-housed in the post-war period. Where they have survived, such as here on the Gower captured by Stefan Szczelkun’s camera, they are a powerful reminder of a brief but influential movement in British building, one which should cause us to review our relationship to the land upon which we live. The Chalet Fields of the Gower in South Wales represent one of the finest surviving examples of Plotlands… arguably the last significant vernacular architectural building movement in the British Isles. Often making use of re-purposed or salvaged material, these chalets were built on former farmland divided into plots, with minimal services or tenure. ‘Stefan Szczelkun, by his own evocative photography, and in conversation with Owen Short, a local architect experienced in the construction, extension and maintenance of these remarkable chalets, captures the unique atmosphere of a fascinating chapter in the history of our built environment.”

Labour Health Secretary Wes Streeting, Conservative shadow home secretary Chris Philp, and Liberal Democrat MP Josh Babarinde have all labelled the comments as racist. Pochin herself has apologised for her remarks; she said they were “phrased poorly”, but maintained that many adverts were “unrepresentative of British society”. In an interview with TalkTV’s Peter Cardwell, the Reform MP complained about TV adverts being full of black and Asian people – those who are “anything other than white”. There is no doubt that Pochin was clumsy with her words – and saying that the issue drives her “mad” is certainly theatrical. While Nigel Farage said the comments were not intentionally racist, he did say her wording was “wrong” and “ugly”. But, apart from anything else, was she fundamentally wrong in her observation? While Pochin’s badly-expressed sentiments have given ammunition to opponents who are eager to frame Reform as a racist and xenophobic party, it is certainly the case that TV advertising – for some time – has not been remotely reflective of modern Britain. Let us look at the evidence. A recent report, commissioned by Channel 4 as part of its “Mirror on the Industry project” and carried out by the agency Tapestry, audited the top 500 adverts across all broadcasters over two blocks of four weeks. It is the sixth year the company has carried out the research. The analysis found that black people remained vastly overrepresented on screen: they feature in more than half of the adverts in 2022. This is a sharp increase from the 2020 figure of 37 per cent. It is likely that the emergence of the Black Lives Matter movement in the summer of 2020 and its impact on the corporate world has played a part. To put this astonishing over-representation into perspective, the 2021 England and Wales Census showed that the black population is around 4 per cent. Even in London, the city with the largest number of black people, the share of the capital’s population that is black is 13.5 per cent. Advertisement The research also found that South Asian people appeared in seventeen percent of adverts – around double their proportion of the general population. Possibly because of a certain gerontophobia which exists in modern Britain – which was certainly on show following the Brexit result – pensioners are virtually invisible on our TV screens, despite the fact that around one in five people in the country are over 65. Pregnant women, meanwhile, featured in one in a thousand adverts, revealing the modern-progressive tendency to avoid traditional depictions of womanhood.

Beginning a career in ’64, he spent six years in Africa, Chief of Base in the Katanga during the Bob Denard invasion in ’68, then Chief of Station in Bujumbura, Burundi in ’70, before being transferred to oversee Vietnamese Tay Ninh province intelligence operations. He was awarded a CIA Medal of Merit for keeping his post open until Saigon’s ’75 fall. In December of 1976, Stockwell resigned from the CIA, opposed to the methods & results of CIA paramilitary operations in the Third World & testified before Congressional committees. Two years later, he wrote the exposé ‘In Search of Enemies’, about that experience & its implications. He claimed the CIA was counterproductive to national security & that its secret wars afforded no benefit. The CIA made the Angolan MPLA to be an enemy despite the fact the MPLA wanted relations with the USA & hadn’t committed aggressive acts. In 1978, on TV’s ’60 Minutes’, he claimed CIA Director William Colby & National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger had systematically lied to Congress about CIA operations. Stockwell was one of the 1st professionals to leave the CIA to go public. The CIA retaliated by suing him in the 4th District Court in Washington DC. Part of the suit intended to eliminate the possibility of selling the story for the purpose of making a movie & required future publications be submitted for CIA review. Unable to afford contesting the case, Stockwell filed for bankruptcy in Austin, TX. After the litigation was processed thru bankruptcy, the CIA dropped the suit. His book is useful for researchers & journalists interested in uncovering information about the conduct of US foreign policy in Africa & Asia. For example, the book tells of a CIA officer having Patrice Lumumba’s body in his car trunk one night in then Elizabethville, Congo. Stockwell mentions in a footnote that at the time he didn’t know the CIA was documented as having repeatedly tried to arrange Lumumba’s assassination. His concerns were that, although many CIA colleagues had integrity, the organization harmed national security & its secret wars harmed innocents.

However, what Robinson failed to disclose in his vlog-like post, is that the church has survived – and been protected – under Muslim caliphs for centuries. Moreover, the 20cm-long iron key to the church has been entrusted to two Palestinian Muslim families in Jerusalem who have been opening and closing the church’s doors and caring for the holy site for nearly 1,000 years. The keys to the church were handed to the Nuseibeh and Joudeh families by Sultan Salahuddin Ayyubi after he captured Jerusalem from the Crusaders in 1187 to maintain a neutral guardian over the space, which is shared by multiple Christian denominations. Social media users stepped in to give Robinson a history lesson about this holy site, which welcomes thousands of pilgrims every year. “The Church you visited, Tommy? Its keys are held by two Muslim families, the Nuseibehs and Joudehs, guardians since Saladin’s time in 1187,” posted journalist Hala Jaber. “Muslims protected Christianity’s holiest site for 900 years.” “The arrangement was made by Saladin in the 12th century and symbolizes Muslim-Christian coexistence,” another user said. “Who preserved those Christian locations for centuries?” asked another user. “Israel’s only 75 years old.”

Far right rally – lady on stage saying she was abused by a white guy was pulled away. “I am a victim of grooming. I was groomed when I was 11 years old. And I am disgusted with all of you here. It was multiple, multiple…white men…white men…” Anti-migrant campaigners in Hull physically threw a rape survivor off the platform when she tried to tell the crowd she had been sexually abused not by an immigrant but by ‘multiple white men’. The incident happened in Hull last Saturday at an event organised by veteran racist campaigner John Francis Gillling. At that point the microphone was snatched from her hand by John Francis Gilling, and a thug grabbed her round the waist, dragged her towards the back of the stage and pushed her away. Members of the crowd can he heard shouting at her to “Fuck off” while Gilling says “We gave her a chance.” Gilling, a former member of Tommy Robinson’s English Defence League, was the principal organiser of a demonstration in the city after the Southport murders last year under the banner of Hull Patriotic Protesters. That event degenerated into rioting where a mosque was attacked and riot police had to be deployed to protect a hotel housing migrants.

UK Woman Booed for Revealing Her Rapists Were White, Not Immigrants — and the Data Backs Her Up – A UK woman was booed off stage during a rally when she revealed her rapists were ‘white men’ and not immigrants. At a ‘Protect Our Women’ rally led by the right, a UK woman revealed that her rapists were white, not immigrants—and the crowd booed. The reaction exposed the hollowness of the conservatives’ supposed advocacy for women: an obsession with the ‘migrant rapist’ myth so implicit that truth itself is rejected when it doesn’t fit the narrative. Yet the data is clear: her claim aligns with reality. While statistics on migration status and rape are limited, one fact is clear: there is no credible evidence that immigration drives higher rates of sexual violence. The Office for National Statistics does not publish data on sexual offences by ethnicity or nationality, meaning the oft-cited ‘40%’ figure has no grounding in ONS findings. Peer-reviewed studies likewise show no correlation between immigration and violent crime (including rape) in the UK. This includes work by the London School of Economics (2013), the Institute of Labor Economics (2013), and the Oxford Migration Observatory (2020). For context, migrants make up around 37% of London’s population, and disproportionately are younger males—demographics that already overrepresent in crime statistics regardless of nationality. Even if 40% of charges were migrant-linked, such a figure would not, on its own, indicate disproportionality. However, no reliable evidence exists to suggest that migrants are more likely to commit rape. White Britons Are Overrepresented If anything, white British nationals are overrepresented in rape and sexual offence statistics. Ministry of Justice conviction data (2011–2016, 2018–2023) shows that the majority of those convicted of sexual offences were white. Likewise, child sexual abuse figures from 2023 reveal that 90% of defendants charged were from white ethnic groups. While high-profile scandals such as the Rotherham or Rochdale cases highlighted overrepresentation of Pakistani-heritage men in certain localities, this was not reflective of national trends. These incidents, though statistically rare, gain symbolic power because they tap into pre-existing fears and are continuously amplified by media narratives, giving them undue prominence in public perception. Instead, the media’s disproportionate focus on such cases has served to fuel conservative anti-immigrant rhetoric rather than reflect the broader statistical reality. Weaponizing rape to vilify immigrants doesn’t just endanger migrant communities—it endangers all survivors of sexual violence. He claimed personal credit for inventing the “pager method” during his tenure at Mossad’s Special Operations division between 2002 and 2004. “You know how many treated equipment we have in these countries? Not only booby-trapped, but spy-manipulated… in all countries you can imagine,” Cohen told Simons, describing what appears to be a far-reaching system of compromised commercial hardware used to gather intelligence or, in some cases, cause physical harm. The technique, Cohen said, originated with the weaponisation of communications equipment used by Hezbollah fighters, specifically pagers rigged to function as remote surveillance tools or explosive devices. “If adversaries are purchasing equipment, Israel should intervene by embedding itself into their supply chain and exploiting it,” he explained, adding that the concept was refined and scaled globally after being tested during the 2006 Second Lebanon War. The former intelligence chief further admitted that Israel’s sabotage apparatus had not been fully applied to Gaza, calling this a “critical shortfall” in the lead-up to the Hamas-led offensive on 7 October 2023. “Not Gaza. Not enough,” he said, arguing that Mossad had repeatedly warned of this vulnerability, only to be ignored by Shin Bet and the IDF.
