It will say their deaths are a tragedy, but the law must be upheld (The law they just created in July because Trevor Chinn gave labour £2m)  When a government can ban a protest group as terrorists, remand its members for a year, and let them starve while the press talks about the price tag of a jet engine, that is not just bias. That is a political choice about whose lives are allowed to matter.Let’s compare this treatment to other crimes. What can you get bail for in Britain? Well, you can kill someone drunk driving and get bail. You can commit fraud worth millions and get bail. You can beat someone unconscious outside a nightclub and get bail. Ralph Harris, convicted of 12 counts of indecent assault against children, got bail and walked free until his court date. Gary Glitter, the convicted pedophile, was granted multiple bales. In 2023, a man in London was convicted of rape. He got bail. While on bail, he raped again. Bail is routinely granted for violent offenses, sexual offenses, serious fraud because the legal principle is simple. You are supposed to be innocent until proven guilty. Remand, which is holding someone in jail before trial, is supposed to be rare, only used when someone is a flight risk or a danger to the public. What did the Filton 24 do? They broke windows and spray painted planes. No one was hurt. No one was threatened. They filmed it and posted it online. So, they are clearly not trying to hide. Yet, they have been in jail, no bail, no trial, no conviction for over a year, and they are now on hunger strike. And they are being grossly mishandled and abused by the prison services. Let’s talk about the people who sell those weapons, shall we? Elbit. Over 40,000 Palestinians dead at least since October 2023. Elbert system weapons are used by Israel to bomb hospitals, schools, people in tents. Their executives are not in jail. They are not on trial. The Ministry of Defense is preparing to award Elbert a 2 billion pound contract. They provide electronic warfare systems to the Royal Navy. Israel wouldn’t exist without British backing. Two former senior Ministry of Defense officials now sit on Elbert’s board. Sir Simon Balum and Sir Mark Puffley. That is called the revolving door. While technically legal, it is incredibly ethically corrupt. Moving from a government job into a company that benefits from a government contract is not okay, especially when it’s the war industry.

Ms Reeves, who last year raised £40billion through tax hikes, announced Treasury tax grabs on pensions, savings and homes. The Chancellor is expected to raise £8.1billion by freezing income tax thresholds until April 2031, taking the UK’s overall tax take to an all-time high of 38 per cent of GDP. Speaking at a press conference in Westminster, Mr Farage warned the Chancellor’s announced proved Britain is now trapped in an “economic doom-loop”. He said: “This really was the ‘Alice through the looking glass’ Budget, with a healthy dose of socialism thrown in. “Yes, words mean what I say they mean, not what they really mean. “She talks about growth and yet the projections for the next few years, growth is continually being downgraded. “They literally talked repeatedly about cutting debt and yet even in their first year they’ve borrowed £21billion more than they were forecast to borrow before they’ve even started. “And the parts I found really difficult to swallow she talked about supporting entrepreneurs, not understanding that entrepreneurial people are generally deciding not to stay in this country, let alone invest in this country … None of what she really said today was true.” The Reform UK leader went on to warn Ms Reeves had launched an “assault on aspiration” and claimed the Cabinet “literally doesn’t understand business”. During her second Budget, the Chancellor also took aim at Mr Farage and Reform UK. Addressing MPs in the House of Commons, Ms Reeves said: “We are ramping up sanctions on Russia and we are freezing known Russian assets.

BBC scandal is all about the Israel lobby tightening its grip as a Zionist propaganda outfit Anna Ford on Robbie Gibb and BBC pro-Israel bias.  Claims surrounding Gibb’s involvement: The comments follow claims that Gibb has “led the charge” in accusations that the BBC is systemically biased. He is reportedly a friend of Michael Prescott, a former external adviser to the BBC who wrote the crucial report criticising the broadcaster which led to its director general, Tim Davie, and the head of BBC news resigning over the weekend. The editing of Trump’s 6 January 2021 speech suggested Trump had said: “We’re going to walk down to the Capitol and I’ll be there with you, and we fight. We fight like hell.” In fact, those words were taken from different sections of Trump’s speech. Gibb was part of a consortium that bought out the Jewish Chronicle outlet in 2020 and still declares on the BBC website that he has a 100 percent holding of the outlet. The Jewish Chronicle last year published stories about Israel and its war on Gaza that were allegedly “wild fabrications”. In July, more than 400 cultural figures signed a letter calling on Gibb to resign from the board over fears he is harming the broadcaster’s credibility. Alan Rusbridger, the former Guardian editor who is currently editor of Prospect Magazine, has previously called into question Gibb’s position on the BBC’s editorial standards committee. The BBC has been widely accused of both pro-Israel and anti-Israel bias. A report released by the Centre For Media Monitoring earlier this year said the BBC gave Israeli deaths 33 times more coverage per fatality and ran almost equal numbers of humanising victim profiles, despite 34 times more Palestinian deaths. Middle East Eye reported earlier this week that the BBC’s online Middle East editor Raffi Berg said in 2020 that it was “wonderful” to be in a “circle of trust” with current and former Mossad agents while writing a book, and that the agency’s “fantastic operations” make him “tremendously proud”. Berg is suing journalist Owen Jones over an article published by Drop Site last December headlined “The BBC’s Civil War Over Gaza”. In the story, Jones said he spoke to 12 BBC staffers who said Berg “plays a key role in a wider BBC culture of ‘systematic Israeli propaganda'”.

‘Beeching Report’: Myth v reality A two-week rail strike just before the 1955 general election in Britain, which some now believe was deliberately provoked for political gain, brought the country to a halt. A ‘state of emergency’ was declared two weeks into June and the political classes were reminded just how reliant the nation was on the whim of transport unions. Although the oil companies hadn’t made it public, North Sea Oil had also been discovered, so in order to attract US investment into the ambitious offshore drilling program there was pressure from the oil lobby behind the scenes to open up a vast new market for petrol in the UK before releasing the cash to build the rigs. The new oil stream must not be allowed to depress the world oil price and demand for the petrodollar. With consecutive governments, particularly Tory Transport Secretary Ernest Marples – who owned road-building firm Marples Ridgeway – the industrial lobby got its way. Passenger travel on the railways would in future subsidize bulk freight transport. Even the newly-constructed state-of-the-art freight marshaling yards such as Whitemoor in Cambridgeshire were phased out, with the railways only taking container traffic or entire train loads of coal, ore, etc. for big business. One third of the rail network and half the stations had been closed. Who was ‘Ax Man’ Dr. Richard Beeching? Retired railway manager and author Ted Gibbins explained in his ‘Blueprints For Bankruptcy’ (1995) that the government’s British Transport Commission, later the British Railways Board too, had been consistently forced to keep fares artificially low by the government. The railways had been ‘regulated’ into making a loss year after year, when on a looser rein they could easily have turned a profit. Both in 1963 and five decades later in 2013, commentators mused about Beeching’s credentials for the job of ‘reshaping’ Britain’s railways. And well they might. The plan was sold to public and politicians on two myths: those railways could no longer make money and that the door-to-door technology of the motor car was simply more convenient. Few seemed to envisage the long commutes and choked roads of today. So it was with the stage set for the revolutionary motor car which was already sweeping across the United States and Germany that, out of nowhere, Beeching stepped on to the national stage with the grim news that Britain’s railways’ days were numbered. In ‘Doctor Who? Atomic Bomber Beeching and His War on the Railways’ (2013 eBook), former editor of the British Aircraft Corporation’s magazine and MEP Richard Cottrell was the first to expose the Ax Man’s shadowy past. Introduced to the British public simply as chairman of Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) Beeching’s link to explosives and nuclear weapons was never mentioned. After a stint at the Woolwich Arsenal designing anti-tank weapons in World War II, Beeching had been moved on to the top secret ‘Tube Alloys’ project which was a cover for the development of the first British atomic weapons. At Royal Ordnance’s secret Fort Halstead base under the North Downs near Sevenoaks in Kent, Cottrell reveals, Beeching’s expertise in metallurgy made a key contribution to Britain’s rudimentary nuclear arsenal. The success of Britain’s 1950s atomic testing program brought Beeching the top job at ICI. Qualifications in metallurgy and state-of-the-art explosives were not, you might think, the ideal qualification for a man whose job was to go through the accounts of British Railways with a fine toothed comb. No, the reason Beeching was hired was because the Conservative government had already decided his job was chop up the railways to make way for the motor car and they needed a figurehead that could keep his mouth shut. With lines to be closed decided before Beeching’s ‘surveys’ took place civil servants at the Department of Transport set about the simple but impish task of meddling with train timetables to make sure branch line trains left just before connecting trains arrived, nudging ever more passengers off the railways. Running costs of lines they wanted to close were grossly inflated, but nether rail unions nor public were allowed to see the figures to check them. Where these fraudulent figures were exposed, as in the pamphlet ‘The Great Isle Of Wight Train Robbery’ (1969) press, public and political furor led to lines earmarked for closure being reprieved, but atomic Bomber Beeching ran a tight ship and exposures of his closure orders to scrutiny were few and far between. A top secret de-industrialization plan was in place too. In late 1967, British Rail printed a secret ‘Blue Book of Maps’ with details of coalmines, steelworks etc. and associated rail lines secretly earmarked for closure over succeeding decades. Britain’s devastating 1984/5 mine closure program and subsequent strike had been secretly anticipated by government and oil industry alike, decades before. David Henshaw in his ‘Great Railway Conspiracy’ (1991) is one of the only analysts to have understood the secret Marples/Beeching axis untruth that rural rail, and urban rail outside London, could never pay its way, was simply propaganda cooked as a cover story, to take out the competition, by the oil industry and roads lobby.

Upcoming Budget and cost of living crisis. Trump and Tariffs. Housing problems. Confidence slumps amid Budget fears and cost of living pain Business and household confidence is slumping amid fears of a brutal Budget next week – and as soaring food prices pile pressure on families. The warning signs for Chancellor Rachel Reeves came as it was claimed Britain is living beyond its means and must cut rampant spending. Yesterday, official figures showed stubbornly high inflation of 3.6 per cent – well above the 2 per cent target – continues to gnaw at living standards. Food price inflation has increased to 4.9 per cent – blamed by the industry on higher costs imposed by the government. And a poll by the British Retail Consortium (BRC) today (THURS) reveals that weeks of ‘tumultuous’ speculation ahead of the Budget has further crushed consumer sentiment. The pressure is also telling on the housing market, as separate figures showed falling prices and buyers becoming hesitant amid uncertainty over the Chancellor’s tax plans. It came as more business leaders added to the growing chorus of dismay over Labour’s dismal handling of the economy. Lord Stuart Rose, the former boss of Marks & Spencer and Asda, said: ‘If you talk to people in business and you talk to people in the street they’re fearful, they’re demotivated, they’re anxious and they’re certainly very anxious now about what’s going to happen next week.’ Fears are growing that Ms Reeves will implement a series of tax hikes at the Budget, adding to the damage done by the £25 billion raid on employer national insurance (NI) announced last year. Taxes are likely to go up because the Chancellor faces an estimated £30 billion black hole in the public finances. But Lord Rose urged Labour to look at bringing spending under control too – as the cost of welfare, pensions, the civil service and long-term sickness spiral. ‘We are now living above our means… it’s unsustainable,’ he told the BBC, accusing the government of failing to get to grips with long-term issues. ‘It’s shambolic what we’ve got at the moment, we’re running an economy now where it’s run by opinion poll and it’s run by focus groups, it’s nonsense.’ Meanwhile, Paul Greenwood, a top UK executive at US oil giant ExxonMobil, accused the government of ‘deliberate’ policy choices that are ‘undermining’ the company. Mr Greenwood was speaking a day after the firm announced that it was closing a chemicals plant in Scotland, putting more than 400 jobs at risk. He blamed windfall taxes on North Sea oil and gas producers that are causing the industry to shrink as well as sky-high energy costs that are blighting UK industry more widely. ‘The government needs to understand that the whole industrial base in UK is at risk unless they wake up and see the damage that their economic policies are doing,’ Mr Greenwood told the BBC. Elsewhere, a survey of businesses by Santander UK showed they were under increasing strain from rising labour costs, tax and energy. The bank’s chief economist Frances Haque said the findings painted ‘a stark picture of a challenging business landscape’. Figures from the BRC show consumer confidence at its lowest level since ‘awful April’, a period when bills and taxes previously went up. ‘It has been a tumultuous month of Budget speculation and consumer confidence took a tumble,’ BRC chief executive Helen Dickinson said. Yesterday, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said that inflation fell to 3.6 per cent in October, down from 3.8 per cent in September. It remains the highest among all of the G7 group of advanced economies. Julian Jessop, economics fellow at the Institute of Economic Affairs, a free-market think-tank, said that the gap between inflation in the UK and Europe remained ‘worryingly large’ with Britain now ‘clearly an outlier’. Ms Reeves said she recognised that inflation was ‘still a big burden on families right across the country’ and was planning to take ‘targeted action’ tackle the cost of living. Separate ONS figures showed UK annual house price growth slowed from 3.1 per cent in August to 2.6 per cent in September. Prices fell over the course of the month by 0.6 per cent. In London, prices fell by 1.8 per cent compared with a year earlier and 1.1 per cent on the month. Meanwhile, a survey from property website Rightmove showed 17 per cent of potential movers have paused their plans due to uncertainty over property taxes in the Budget.

One of the UK’s biggest van-dwelling camps to be cleared from fringes of beauty spot City bosses have vowed to evict a van-dwelling community from a Bristol beauty spot after parts of the popular parkland were “used as a toilet”. In a joint statement, Green Party councillors Barry Parsons and Stephen Williams [of Grenfell Tower infamy] said the discovery of sites filled with human waste on the historic Durdham Down, known locally as the Downs, was “completely unacceptable”. The enforcement action comes after complaints from residents in the surrounding wealthy suburbs of Redland and Stoke Bishop over the increasing number of lived-in vans and caravansin the park. At a last count in August, The Independent found there to be more than 100 vehicles on the parkland, making it one of the biggest van-dweller communities in the UK. When approached, some said they had been forced to due to a housing crisisin Bristol, where private rents rose 23 per cent from 2020 to 2023. “We are currently working on an enforcement plan to begin to move the group of lived in vehicles from the Downs,” the councillors said. “We appreciate that moving such a large group is not going to be an easy task, and will require a lot of coordination, but we cannot allow a public health risk to continue.” The councillors, which said the open-air toilet use presented a “significant public issue”, said outreach workers would help residents of the vans and caravans find a “route away from vehicle dwelling”. The work to remove the vehicles, they said, would not be an “easy task” and will require “a lot of coordination”. They added: “Most vehicle dwellers will not be engaging in this sort of behaviour, but now that this issue has been identified and confirmed, we have to take action to put an end to this behaviour and make sure the Downs remains open to everyone.” Bristol has seen the number of lived-in vehicles across the city rise 300 per cent in six years to a peak of 680. Most are situated on roadsides, private land and council-owned sites with toilets and running water. With tensions flaring within local neighbourhoods over their presence, the council is working on a new policy on how to tackle concerns. Across the UK, at the last census in 2021, some 104,000 households lived in a caravan or mobile home, 19,000 more than a decade before. When The Independent visited the vehicle-dwelling community on the Downs in August, campaigners against it said they had evidence of threatening behaviour and antisocial behaviour, including bushes being used as open-air toilets. They even threatened legal action against the city council for failing to remove the vehicles. However, some van-dwellers told The Independent it was unfair to tar everyone with the same brush. On Wednesday, van-dweller Tim, who does not want to give his surname, said: “And where will everyone go now? It’s not dealing with the problem, it’s moving it on somewhere else.” As part of its newly-created policy, Bristol City Council said it aimed to increase the number of pitches for van-dwellers at council-owned sites from 67 to 250 by the end of March next year.

The Society of Merchant Venturers have defended the 163-year-old law which means they ‘manage and protect’ Bristol’s famous Downs area, after a city councillor called for the law to be repealed. Article continues below The Merchant Venturers said they are the landowners of most of the Downs, and it has been through the the 1861 which cemented the arrangements for managing the land that it has been preserved and protected. The area known as ‘the Downs’ is actually two different parcels of land, separated by an ancient and largely invisible redundant parish boundary. Durdham Down is the smaller area which is basically everything north of the water tower, and this area is owned by Bristol City Council. Clifton Down is everything else, from the Suspension Bridge and the Observatory, all the way past Bridge Valley Road and up to the Sea Walls – this area has been owned for more than 250 years by the Society of Merchant Venturers. In 1861, an Act of Parliament laid down the arrangements for managing this land, and enshrining it as a green open space that could never be developed or sold for development. It created the Downs Committee, which is made up of six city councillors and six members of the Society of Merchant Venturers, and chaired by the Lord Mayor. That arrangement has been in place for 163 years, and it means that the city council has a say over what happens to the SMV-owned Clifton Down, while the Merchant Venturers have a say over what happens on the council-owned Durdham Down. The Society of Merchant Venturers have defended the status quo, pointing out that most of it is their land, and is only open to the public because of the 1861 Act. “The Clifton and Durdham Downs is public land only in the sense that its owners, the Society of Merchant Venturers (SMV) and Bristol City Council, proactively initiated a binding agreement in 1861 to protect the green open space through an Act of Parliament so that it could never be developed or sold privately for development,” a spokesperson said. “Furthermore, the Downs Committee was created by the Downs Act to ensure that the two landowners would work together as guardians of the Downs, to manage and protect the land so that it could be used for recreation by the people of Bristol forever,” she added.

Irish gypsy traveller, Jimmy Donovan, on how Council won’t listen to their needs on a Council traveller site up at Avonmouth, and then evicted everyone from the site. James Donovan was evicted in June, along with 30 other residents, from Bristol City Council’s only transit site St Anthony’s Park in Avonmouth. When James started to go back to St Anthony’s Park from his nearby encampment to get pails of water the council came and turned off the mans water. This week the council employed workers from Doncaster with a digger to replace the old water valve for the site with an electronic one which can turn the water off remotely. Jimmy tells us how ‘bad people’ had been turning up at St Anthony’s Park to dump rubbish there but the council landlords refused to do anything about the dumping and once it got really bad the eviction took place. Gypsies did not go to court to defend agaisnt the psession order because they were afraid of the court process and felt either they would not be able to make their case or would be hit with costs which they could not afford to pay. “We just want somewhere to live in peace” “We get moved on wherever we go” “We fought for our country and we have a right to live in it” (Gypsies and Travellers speaking). For many Gypsies and Travellers a key area of cultural difference from the settled population is where they live. However public policy has significantly failed to meet their accommodation needs. Twice-yearly government counts show consistently that a quarter of Gypsies and Travellers in caravans are on unauthorised sites, because they have nowhere else to stop. This means that they are legally homeless under the Housing Act 1996. Between 1970 and 1994 under the Caravan Sites Act 1968 local authorities had a duty to provide sites for people “of nomadic habit of life, regardless of their race or origin”, “residing in or resorting to” their areas. Many did not provide sufficient sites, or put them in unsuitable locations far from local facilities, by motorways, rubbish tips or industrial activities. In 1994 the government repealed this duty and withdrew grant aid for sites. With fewer sites Gypsies and Travellers were forced onto increasingly problematic stopping places or into conventional housing unsuited to their cultural needs. Government research has calculated that up to 4,500 additional pitches are needed (Niner 2002).

She brags about her management style. “I’m trying to help you hit your targets,” she says – adding: “My team is always on point, we always meet our targets.” The recording will add to fears of residents of social housing that their safety is not taken seriously by landlords. The conversation took place in 2022. It was reported to Clarion’s HR team in September 2023. However, an investigation only began in September 2024 when the recording was sent to Clarion management. The manager involved was only sacked this summer – almost two years after it was first raised with Clarion. What has Clarion said? A Clarion spokesperson told Sky News: “In 2023, our HR team received an email from a former employee raising concerns, but no supporting evidence was provided despite our request. When an audio recording was shared with us in September 2024, we immediately launched a full investigation, which led to the dismissal of a staff member. “It is deeply regrettable that information was not shared sooner, as this would have enabled earlier action. Building safety remains our top priority across all Clarion homes.”

The Current Monetary System is a Predatory Ponzi Scheme The current Western monetary system has been put together by the world’s most powerful bankers. The system doesn’t have to be the way it is. “The monetary system is the way it is because those who run it choose to have it remain that way.”, says former hedge fund manager and economic analyst Alex Krainer. The monetary system, which is run by banker oligarchs and the banking system, achieves its ends via the use of physical (military), economic and psychological violence. “How so?”, you might me wondering. The system is set up in such a way that it requires constant growth in order to stay alive. In this sense the existing system is like a bicycle. If the accumulation stops, if the forward motion (growth) stops, the bicycle tips over and the rider falls off. When a banker gives you a loan, say 100,000 dollars for a mortgage, you have to pay it back with interest. Generally speaking, over time, you’re going to end up paying it back twice, to the tune of about 200,000 dollars. The problem is, only the principle, only 100,000 dollars enters circulation. The additional 100,000 that’s required to pay off your loan has to be earned and thus extracted from an overall pool of money that doesn’t include anything other than principal allocations. This creates a situation where growth is not only advantageous for bankers, it’s also essential in order to keep the overall system afloat. In other words, the monetary system is a huge predatory money lending scheme that financially entraps its prey in debt cycles. While all of this is happening the banking system continually accumulates untaxed, “untouchable” off-shore financial holdings that total out at upwards of 50 TRILLION dollars and counting.(1a) All Modern Wars are Bankers Wars for Profit and Conquest Following logically from all that has been said so far, the only way continual growth can be maintained is by moving outside of given markets once they are saturated. In other words, if growth is essential for the current system’s survival and growth is no longer possible within a given region then the profit makers must find new markets, new regions, new resources and new targets of exploitation or the system will collapse. In the US, Europe and in Canada, we’ve seen more and more cities slipping into drug addiction, suicide and deeper into poverty. This is because the banks have been pushing the donor owned political class to create more and more growth and therefore profit (for bankers) abroad. All of this has transpired at the expense of the aforementioned countries’ general populations. This growth fetish is the true underlying cause of the perpetual bipartisan push for more and more wars in the Middle East, Eastern Europe and wherever else imperialist expansion and looting are possible.

Nathan Gill was jailed for over ten years today after accepting tens of thousands of pounds in bribes to give speeches, interviews and arrange events supporting Russian activity in Ukraine. The former leader of the Reform UK party in Wales was told to ‘recruit’ other British MPs and Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) to attend pro-Russia events, including ‘a leading figure in the Brexit Party’, which was headed by Nigel Farage at the time. The 52-year-old was promised he would be ‘rewarded’ with a ‘sack of paper gifts’ thought to contain money, if he would bring his ‘friends’ in the Brexit Party, which is now known as Reform UK. Now it can be revealed that four other pro-Brexit MEPs are under investigation in connection with the scandal. Scotland Yard confirmed yesterday that Mr Farage is not one of the politicians being investigated and there is no suggestion of any wrongdoing by the Reform leader. As Gill was sentenced today, Head of Scotland Yard’s Counter Terrorism Command Dominic Murphy warned that Moscow’s attempts to influence British politics are ‘widespread’. He suggested Russia is seeking to bribe and influence MPs to subvert our democracy saying: ‘This is the first type of case we’ve seen like this but what we’ve seen in this case does raise questions. ‘I think we’re beginning to see a course of conduct in those states that wish to do us harm, about their influence over society, politicians and politics more broadly.’ In an unprecedented prosecution, Gill pocketed around £5,000 a time to read out parliamentary speeches urging Ukraine to negotiate with Moscow and seek peace after Russia invaded Crimea and sent paramilitary units into the Donbas region. He delivered scripted media statements criticising Ukraine leader President Zelensky and supporting Ukrainian politician, Viktor Medvedchuk, a personal friend of President Putin. Medvedchuk, who was later accused of treason in Ukraine and attempting to loot national resources, is considered so close to Putin that the Russian leader is the godfather of Medvedchuk’s daughter. Gill was paid thousands to give TV interviews in favour of the key Putin ally and to make speeches in the European Parliament, where he was an MEP for the UK Independence Party (UKIP) from 2014 to 2020. When Len Deighton’s first novel The Ipcress File was gearing up for film production in the 1960s, the author and lead actor Michael Caine tried to persuade producer Harry Saltzman to let Caine wear thick glasses on screen. Deighton and Caine both wore heavyset specs. The book’s hero Harry Palmer wore them too, but Saltzman wasn’t budging. “No, no, no. What film star have you ever seen wearing glasses?” Saltzman asked over supper one evening. Luckily, Harry’s wife Jacqueline was hosting the meal at their London home and interrupted: “Cary, darling. Cary Grant looks lovely in glasses.” “Michael looked down at his plate,” Deighton recalled. “We had won.” Len Deighton: Secrets of a Spy Writer’s Life It was a win not just for Deighton and Caine but for the working class. Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Romantic poet, named his son Berkeley after the Severn-side village where his friend Jenner lived, who was developing the first smallpox vaccine – the vaccine was tried on his son, who unfortunately died. Celebrated poet S. T. Coleridge subjected his new-born son, Berkeley, to Edward Jenner’s experimental smallpox vaccine. The disastrous result, death by cowpox-induced TB, led to a rift with, and separation from, his wife, Sara.  During the eleven months he was away from Nether Stowey, Sarah and the children grew ill as a result of a smallpox vaccine. Baby Berkeley’s immune system did not recover, and he died from consumption, a well-known cowpox complication, which he allegedly caught from the nanny. His decline was fairly quick, but it was painful. Sarah was devastated, and her grief was reflected physically: her thick brown hair, long considered her great beauty, began to fall out and was never the same—she had to cut it off and wear a wig for the rest of her life. Coleridge was also feeling depressed at this time, not because he knew of Berkeley’s passing, but because Sarah had ceased writing to him and he felt ignored. Poole felt that Coleridge should be kept apprised of only happy news so that his studies would proceed accordingly, and, at this time, Sarah naturally could think of nothing amusing to say. Eventually Sarah pressed upon Poole the importance of telling Coleridge about his son’s death; Poole’s letter was not entirely clear, so Sarah had to write Coleridge herself, pouring out her suffering on the page and likely expecting a similar response. She did not get it; instead, Coleridge spoke of his son’s death in philosophical, detached terms. He also decided to extend his stay in Germany for five more months, a choice that reflects his lifelong tendency to “[run] away from situations or [hide] his true feelings, in direct proportion to the urgency of the duty or the depth of the feeling. Those he most loved were likely to be the worst treated” (Jones 81). This habit was in full force when Sarah wrote him in May of 1799 to request he come home to her and Coleridge decided instead to take a walking tour of the Harz Mountains and climb the Brocken (Hill 11; Lefebure 104-20; Jones 75-81; Vickers 76).

Rachel Reeve’s Budget – plans for changes to savings. Is it good for people to have savings? Savers set to face ‘double whammy’ if Reeves raises income tax and cuts cash ISA The Chancellor is considering cutting the allowance on cash ISAs to encourage investing Savers are set to be hit by a “double whammy” in the upcoming autumn Budget if income tax is hiked and the cash ISA allowance is slashed as predicted, experts have warned. Chancellor Rachel Reeves is considering cutting savers’ annual cash ISA allowance from £20,000, with reports suggesting this could go down to £10,000 or £12,000. And at the same time, she is reportedly planning to increase income tax by either 1p or 2p, potentially across all tax bands. Savers pay their usual rate of income tax on savings interest over a certain threshold not held in ISAs. The combination of the two policies may mean savers can shield less of their money from tax, and pay a higher rate of tax on the interest earned from that money. Some of the highest earners – those making more than £125,000 a year – could end up paying more than £3,377 in tax on their savings over five years if the allowance is cut to £10,000 and income tax hiked, according to The i Paper analysis. Those earning over £50,270 – higher rate taxpayers – could face tax bills of £1,988 over the same time period. Shaun Moore, tax and financial planning expert at Quilter, said: “The potential reduction in the ISA allowance combined with a rise in income tax rates could present a ‘double whammy’ for cash savers, particularly for higher earners.” Reeves is reportedly considering cutting the allowance on cash ISAs to persuade people to invest instead in a bid to boost the flagging economy, but experts warn that the policy will not have the desired impact. Moore said: “Reducing the ISA allowance would fail to address the core issue of a lack of investment and long-term financial resilience in the UK. “In fact, it would risk sending the wrong message entirely by penalising those who do save and invest, while doing little to support those who aren’t yet engaged.” The changes could come alongside other tax increases in the Budget, which may affect those trying to save. The Chancellor is said to be preparing to strip back tax cuts offered to staff and employers that pay money into workplace pensions as she looks to plug a hole in public finances. How much extra savers could pay? Yet in Greece, former finance minister and prominent leftist Yanis Varoufakis (Athens, 1961) was paying close attention to how technology companies — the so-called Big Tech — were growing at breakneck speed. With millions of people locked down at home, working and shopping online, glued to screens and cloud computing, these companies became omnipresent and all-powerful. In the United States, between 2020 and 2022, there was a 52% increase in screen time in the under-18 age group. Armed with colossal amounts of personal data, giants like Facebook, Twitter, Google, Alibaba, or Amazon achieved what was once unthinkable: knowing their users better than the users know themselves. No longer content with just spotting behavioral patterns, they began to anticipate, exploit, and shape them — trapping millions in a relentless cycle of digital dependence: the circuit of cloud rent. Varoufakis concluded that something fundamental had changed: capitalism, as we had known it for more than two centuries, was dead. In its place arose technofeudalism, a new order controlled by technolords — a handful of ultra-wealthy players who extract rents from users and subordinate the old capitalists. His hypothesis remains controversial, even irritating to the Marxist left to which he belongs. But today, few doubt that Big Tech has accumulated unprecedented power. Sooner or later, citizens and governments will have to confront them to shape a different future. Those who fail to understand this soon will end up being ruled by algorithms, says Varoufakis, who answered questions from EL PAÍS by email. Question. We are witnessing an unprecedented accumulation of wealth. Media outlets report that Elon Musk could become the first trillionaire, while the global middle class stagnates. In the United States, real income is comparable to 1974; in China or Brazil, millions have escaped poverty, but without matching the increase in productivity or corporate profits. How did we get here, and what can we anticipate from this scenario? Answer. We arrived here through the natural process of capitalist accumulation, which organically produces crises that, in turn, provoke interventions by political agents representing capital. Their purpose is to shift wealth to those they represent through policies that liquidate public assets to artificially reinforce asset owners’ rates of return at the expense of the working and middle classes. The more this process continues, the greater the inequality and the deeper the anxiety of the beneficiaries — the ultra-rich — whether from fear that the many will revolt against them or that the fictitious capital they rely upon will implode. Q. The 2008 financial crisis marked a turning point. Shortly before, the iPhone and social networks inaugurated another stage: the prelude to technofeudalism. What are its basic characteristics? A. The 2008 crisis took down nearly every bank in the U.S. and Europe. To float the banks again, governments and central banks printed about $35 trillion, while at the same time practicing austerity by suppressing wages and social benefits, among other measures. The result was a coexistence of massive liquidity and low demand, leading to weak investment in goods and services. The only companies that invested some of the printed $35 trillion were those that, initially located in Silicon Valley, founded Big Tech on the back of a new form of capital I call cloud capital. That marked the beginning of technofeudalism.

Johnny Vedmore investigates. by Johnny Vedmore On the morning of 11 September 2001, Klaus Schwab sat having breakfast in the Park East Synagogue in New York City with Rabbi Arthur Schneier, former Vice President for the World Jewish Congress and close associate of the Bronfman and Lauder families. Together, the two men watched one of the most impactful events of the next twenty years unfold as planes struck the World Trade Center buildings. Now, two decades on, Klaus Schwab again sits in a front row seat of yet another generation-defining moment in modern human history. Always seeming to have a front row seat when tragedy approaches, Schwab’s proximity to world-altering events likely owes to his being one of the most well-connected men on Earth. As the driving force behind the World Economic Forum, “the international organization for public-private cooperation,” Schwab has courted heads of state, leading business executives, and the elite of academic and scientific circles into the Davos fold for over 50 years. More recently, he has also courted the ire of many due to his more recent role as the frontman of the Great Reset, a sweeping effort to remake civilization globally for the express benefit of the elite of the World Economic Forum and their allies. Schwab, during the Forum’s annual meeting in January 2021, stressed that the building of trust would be integral to the success of the Great Reset, signalling a subsequent expansion of the initiative’s already massive public relations campaign. Though Schwab called for the building of trust through unspecified “progress,” trust is normally facilitated through transparency. Perhaps that is why so many have declined to trust Mr. Schwab and his motives, as so little is known about the man’s history and background prior to his founding of the World Economic Forum in the early 1970s. Like many prominent frontmen for elite-sponsored agendas, the online record of Schwab has been well-sanitized, making it difficult to come across information on his early history as well as information on his family. Yet, having been born in Ravensburg, Germany in 1938, many have speculated in recent months that Schwab’s family may have had some tie to Axis war efforts, ties that, if exposed, could threaten the reputation of the World Economic Forum and bring unwanted scrutiny to its professed missions and motives. In this Unlimited Hangout investigation, the past that Klaus Schwab has worked to hide is explored in detail, revealing the involvement of the Schwab family, not only in the Nazi quest for an atomic bomb, but apartheid South Africa’s illegal nuclear programme. Especially revealing is the history of Klaus’ father, Eugen Schwab, who led the Nazi-supported German branch of a Swiss engineering firm into the war as a prominent military contractor. That company, Escher-Wyss, would use slave labor to produce machinery critical to the Nazi war effort as well as the Nazi’s effort to produce heavy water for its nuclear program. Years later, at the same company, a young Klaus Schwab served on the board of directors when the decision was made to furnish the racist apartheid regime of South Africa with the necessary equipment to further its quest to become a nuclear power. With the World Economic Forum now a prominent advocate for nuclear non-proliferation and “clean” nuclear energy, Klaus Schwab’s past makes him a poor spokesperson for his professed agenda for the present and the future. Yet, digging even deeper into his activities, it becomes clear that Schwab’s real role has long been to “shape global, regional and industry agendas” of the present in order to ensure the continuity of larger, much older agendas that came into disrepute after World War II, not just nuclear technology, but also eugenics-influenced population control policies. A Swabian Story On 10 July 1870, Klaus Schwab’s grandfather Jakob Wilhelm Gottfried Schwab, referred to later as simply Gottfried, was born in a Germany at war with its French neighbours. Karlsruhe, the town where Gottfried Schwab was born, was located in the Grand Duchy of Baden, ruled in 1870 by the 43 year old Grand Duke of Baden, Frederick I. The following year, the aforementioned Duke would be present at the proclamation of the German Empire which took place in the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles. He was the only son-in-law of the incumbent Emperor Wilhelm I and, as Frederick I, was one of the reigning sovereigns of Germany. By the time Gottfried Schwab turned 18 years old, Germany would see Wilhelm II take the throne upon the death of his father, Frederick III.

City-States Without Limits – Part 1 A powerful group of Silicon Valley oligarchs are using the Trump administration to push for the construction of privatized city-states in the US. Their interests are aligned with a global network of oligarchs who want to move away from the global governance of nation-states to the global governance of an international network of city-states. The intention is for the city-states to form a “patchwork” of realms overseen by a regional balance of power global governance system: the Multipolar World Order. New city-states—some being constructed from scratch and others being seeded into existing cities—go by many names. In the US, President Donald Trump has called them “Freedom Cities.” The United Nations refers to them as “human settlements,” the C40 Cities Network calls them “15 minute cities,” The Global Parliament of Mayors sometimes refers to them as “resilient cities,” and the Charter Cities Institute calls them, unsurprisingly, “charter cities.” But whatever they are called, they have a defined set of common characteristics. All of these emerging city-states are centrally planned and designed to maximise the use of technology. Some are already close to becoming completed “smart cities.” Many of these new city-states, as yet undeclared, have been given independent jurisdiction with varying degrees of autonomy from the nation-states in which they reside. Perhaps their most striking shared trait is their universal commitment to implement global governance policy initiatives. To this end, many nascent city-states have already joined city-based global governance networks. Their development is being driven by a public-private partnership investment strategy that is encouraged and supported at the global governance level. Some are currently being built in so called “Special Economic Zones” (SEZs). Other announced city-state developments, such as Freedom Cities in the US, bear all the hallmarks of SEZs. The global proliferation of Special Economic Zones, most notably those with “residential spaces,” is rapidly expanding the potential locations for yet more city-state projects. There are already thousands. Conspicuous philosophical and political theories, and the city-state landscape forming before our eyes, redefines our concept of global governance. The notion of phasing out the purported “sovereignty” of nation-states is now firmly embedded in the strategies to develop a new kind of intergovernmental structure. One in which the city predominates. The concept of a worldwide network of privatized, corporate city-state “kingdoms” has been embraced and is viewed as the best and most expedient method both for enslaving humanity to a centralised digital surveillance and behavioural control grid, and for establishing firm global governance. Gov-Corp Technates In a previous two-part investigation for Unlimited Hangout—The Dark MAGA Gov-Corp Technate Part 1 and Part 2—we explored the so-called philosophy of the Dark Enlightenment and the sociopolitical theory of Technocracy. We saw how these two concepts overlap and witnessed how they have captured the imaginations of a group of Silicon Valley oligarchs—Peter Thiel, Elon Musk, Marc Andreessen, etc.,—who have effectively seized control of the Trump administration. It is recommended that you read those essays to get a perspective on some of the concepts we will expand on here. The Dark Enlightenment was a philosophical treatise first published by British political theorist and philosopher Nick Land in 2012. It incorporated the ideas espoused by US “thinker,” tech entrepreneur and blogger Curtis Yarvin. Publication of the Dark Enlightenment in the UK and Yarvin’s theories, published in the US, combined to lay the alleged intellectual foundations of what has become known as the Neoreactionary movement (NRx). In the Dark Enlightenment, Land acknowledged the influence of Peter Thiel on the growth of his own ideas. Specifically, Land referenced Thiel’s 2009 article “The Education of a Libertarian” as formative. Curtis Yarvin describes Thiel as “fully enlightened,” and is a close associate of Thiel’s. Thiel’s Founders Fund financed Yarvin’s tech startup ventures.

Accelerationist literature echoes hypnotic delusions of Margaret Thatcher, Victor Rothschild: ‘There Is No Alternative’. Nick Land – quick and dirty introduction to acceleration. NICK LAND, A QUICK-AND-DIRTY INTRODUCTION TO ACCELERATIONISM (Nick Land in Bolivia, circa 1997) Anyone trying to work out what they think about accelerationism better do so quickly. That’s the nature of the thing. It was already caught up with trends that seemed too fast to track when it began to become self-aware, decades ago. It has picked up a lot of speed since then. Accelerationism is old enough to have arrived in waves, which is to say insistently, or recurrently, and each time the challenge is more urgent. Among its predictions is the expectation that you’ll be too slow to deal with it coherently. Yet if you fumble the question it poses – because rushed – you lose, perhaps very badly. It’s hard. (For our purposes here “you” are standing in as a bearer of “the opinions of mankind”.) Time-pressure, by its very nature, is difficult to think about. Typically, while the opportunity for deliberation is not necessarily presumed, it is at least – with overwhelming likelihood – mistaken for an historical constant, rather than a variable. If there was ever time to think, we think, there still is and will always be. The definite probability that the allotment of time to decision-making is undergoing systematic compression remains a neglected consideration, even among those paying explicit and exceptional attention to the increasing rapidity of change. In philosophical terms, the deep problem of acceleration is transcendental. It describes an absolute horizon – and one that is closing in. Thinking takes time, and accelerationism suggests we’re running out of time to think that through, if we haven’t already. No contemporary dilemma is being entertained realistically until it is also acknowledged that the opportunity for doing so is fast collapsing. The suspicion has to arrive that if a public conversation about acceleration is beginning, it’s just in time to be too late. The profound institutional crisis that makes the topic ‘hot’ has at its core an implosion of social decision-making capability. Doing anything, at this point, would take too long. So instead, events increasingly just happen. They seem ever more out of control, even to a traumatic extent. Because the basic phenomenon appears to be a brake failure, accelerationism is picked up again. Accelerationism links the implosion of decision-space to the explosion of the world – that is, to modernity. It is important therefore to note that the conceptual opposition between implosion and explosion does nothing to impede their real (mechanical) coupling. Thermonuclear weapons provide the most vividly illuminating examples. An H-bomb employs an A-bomb as a trigger. A fission reaction sparks a fusion reaction. The fusion mass is crushed into ignition by a blast process. (Modernity is a blast.) This is already to be talking about cybernetics, which also returns insistently, in waves. It amplifies to howl, and then dissipates into the senseless babble of fashion, until the next blast-wave hits. For accelerationism the crucial lesson was this: A negative feedback circuit – such as a steam-engine ‘governor’ or a thermostat – functions to keep some state of a system in the same place. Its product, in the language formulated by French philosophical cyberneticists Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, is territorialization. Negative feedback stabilizes a process, by correcting drift, and thus inhibiting departure beyond a limited range. Dynamics are placed in the service of fixity – a higher-level stasis, or state. All equilibrium models of complex systems and processes are like this. To capture the contrary trend, characterized by self-reinforcing errancy, flight, or escape, D&G coin the inelegant but influential term deterritorialization. Deterritorialization is the only thing accelerationism has ever really talked about. … which is the revolutionary path? Is there one?—To withdraw from the world market, as Samir Amin advises Third World countries to do, in a curious revival of the fascist “economic solution”? Or might it be to go in the opposite direction? To go still further, that is, in the movement of the market, of decoding and deterritorialization? For perhaps the flows are not yet deterritorialized enough, not decoded enough, from the viewpoint of a theory and a practice of a highly schizophrenic character. Not to withdraw from the process, but to go further, to “accelerate the process,” as Nietzsche put it: in this matter, the truth is that we haven’t seen anything yet….

Electronic Intafada – Sean Middleborough, Palestine Action, absconded from prison. Exclusive: Absconded activist refuses to be “prisoner of war” Palestine Action activist Sean Middlebrough, 33, nicknamed Shibby, has absconded from a UK prison after being released on temporary bail for his brother’s wedding. In a statement exclusive to The Electronic Intifada, Middlebrough said he was not a terrorist and should never have been imprisoned in the first place. After a four-day conditional release on 23 October, Middlebrough did not return to Wandsworth prison in London. Despite regular police checks at his home address, he managed to slip away without his family’s knowledge, sources confirmed to The Electronic Intifada. Middlebrough, who is from Liverpool in northwest England, was on remand for a third time in connection with an August 2024 action at an Elbit weapons facility in Filton, a town near Bristol in southwest England. Elbit Systems is one of Israel’s largest arms manufacturers and its British subsidiary, Elbit Systems UK, operates 16 sites across the country. During the Filton action, protestors allegedly drove a van into the factory and damaged Israeli weapons developed there. Middlebrough is accused of causing over $2.5 million in damages. It resulted in, among other things, the destruction of armed quadcopters widely used by the Israeli military in its genocidal aggression in Gaza. Six people were arrested on the spot, detained for 36 hours without legal representation or being able to contact family or the outside world, and charged with criminal damage, aggravated burglary and violent disorder. Further arrests by British counterterrorism police over the following year saw a total of 24 people detained in connection with the Filton action, including Middlebrough. Middlebrough, whose trial date is set for April 2026 and who had already spent a year in pre-trial detention, was facing a total of over 18 months on remand, far exceeding the six-month pre-trial custody time limit. “I am not on the run. I am merely being sensible, refusing to be held as a prisoner of war of Israel in a British prison,” Middlebrough said in a statement obtained and verified by The Electronic Intifada. “Outrageously, 23 of my heroic and honorable co-defendants remain in prison following our kidnapping by counterterrorism police.”…

Cultural treasures – Michelangelo’s David, Picasso’s Guernica, Pink Floyd’s inflatable pig – are preserved in a building that is itself a refurbished heritage artifact. This is our only glimpse into the lives of the elite, holed up against the effects of a catastrophe which has caused mass sterility: no children have been born for a gener- ation. Theo asks the question, ‘how all this can matter if there will be no-one to see it?’ The alibi can no longer be future gener- ations, since there will be none. The response is nihilistic hedonism: ‘I try not to think about it’. What is unique about the dystopia in Children of Men is that it is specific to late capitalism. This isn’t the familiar totalitarian scenario routinely trotted out in cinematic dystopias (see, for example, James McTeigue’s 2005 Vfor Vendetta). In the P.D. James novel on which the film is based, democracy is suspended and the country is ruled over by a self-appointed Warden, but, wisely, the film downplays all this. For all that we know, the authoritarian measures that are everywhere in place could have been implemented within a political structure that remains, notionally, democratic. The War on Terror has prepared us for such a development: the normalization of crisis produces a situation in which the repealing of measures brought in to deal with an emergency becomes unimaginable (when will the war be over?)

Nick Georges on having film of GBH pro-Israeli who attacked and hospitalised him, but police are doing nothing. Concerns after pro-Palestine activists attacked across Surrey Police are investigating several assaults on demonstrators at pro-Palestine protests in Surrey last month, prompting concerns about rising tensions at local protests. Three elderly protesters were injured in two separate incidents, with one man requiring hospital treatment for head injuries. The events involved members of the West Surrey Palestine Solidarity Campaign (WSPSC), a local group that regularly holds peaceful protests and information stalls calling for humanitarian support for Palestinians. The group, which includes many older residents, has said it is committed to non-violent action and dialogue. One of the incidents took place on Wednesday, October 15, on New Wickham Lane in Egham, where 73-year-old Guildford resident Nick Georges was assaulted during a small demonstration. He suffered a fractured skull and other injuries and later underwent surgery. Surrey Police said officers were called at around 5.15pm following reports of an assault. A man has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and common assault and released on police bail while enquiries continue. The protest, organised by a Woking-based activist named Chris, involved a small group from WSPSC. The group had attached banners to a bridge over the M25 and displayed several Palestinian flags when another group reportedly approached and a confrontation took place. Witnesses said one flag and its pole were taken and damaged, and that Mr Georges was attacked after intervening. He was treated at the scene by first-aiders and a passing medic before being taken to hospital. “I was unaware of being hit,” Mr Georges said. “I just remember lying on the road, dizzy and in severe pain. The experience left me physically and psychologically shaken.” In a separate incident on Saturday, October 18, two elderly WSPSC members said they were assaulted during a small demonstration in Farnham, near the junction of the A31 Farnham Bypass and Station Hill. A 69-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman reported being attacked by another individual. Video footage of the incident has been shared with police. Chris, who organised the Egham protest, said the event had been planned in advance and that participants were mostly older residents. “Our aim is to raise awareness of the humanitarian situation in Gaza,” he said. “It’s deeply upsetting that such an incident occurred at what was intended as a peaceful protest.” Mr Georges, who has previously undertaken humanitarian work in the West Bank, said the attack was distressing and had aggravated existing post-traumatic stress.
