See Joe’s Substack, Temple Scenes. He forensically looks in to the failures of the modern planning systems – particularly in Bristol. Who is Bristol’s Chief Planner working for? As Simone Wilding warns councillors not to challenge major developments, a look at her LinkedIn activity reveals the close relationships she’s been cultivating with the city’s developers and lobbyists It had seemed that the developers wanting to build the tallest ever building in south Bristol were going to have to go back to the drawing board. In January this year, a planning committee of councillors refused a proposal for a 23-storey block of student flats in the Victorian inner-urban district of Bedminster, still largely characterised by low-rise residential terraces and light industrial uses. Members had voted 5-3 against the scheme – a high-density mix of 400 Purpose-Built Student Accommodation (PBSA) units, 434 Build-to-Rent flats and commercial floorspace. As the council’s procedure dictates, officers were instructed to come back to the following meeting with written-up reasons for refusal. The councillors had refused the planning application on the grounds of over-intensive development and harm to the skyline, including the setting of the Grade 1 listed heritage asset St Mary Redcliffe church. There was also the issue of poor design: 55% of rooms do not meet the British Research Establishment’s guidance for sunlight and more than half the proposed units are single-aspect. Other concerns included the over-concentration of student accommodation in the area and a letter from the NHS warning that local GP practices were already operating at or near capacity and would be “unlikely to be able to accommodate the increased demand arising from this development.” But what came back to the following meeting was an officer report that told the committee that they couldn’t, in fact, refuse – not without the developer taking the council to the Planning Inspectorate for an appeal that would be certain to succeed. And the council’s Chief Planner, Simone Wilding, raised the stakes further in the meeting by saying that the council would be likely to lose around £750,000 in appeal costs, plus a further £250,000 through the expense of defending the case. To illustrate the Planning Inspectorate’s supposed willingness to overturn refusals based on over-densification, the attention of councillors was repeatedly drawn to a development in Brighton that had a refusal overturned at appeal last year. In the initial committee meeting, when Wilding brought up ‘Brighton Gasworks’ – a mixed-use residential scheme with buildings ranging from 3 to 12 storeys – she made the false claim that it was “a much higher density” than the proposal before them. In reality, the reverse is true: Brighton Gasworks is 245 dwellings per hectare (dph); Princess Street is 384 dph if you don’t include the student tower, 427 dph if you do. Both Princess Street levels exceed the threshold identified in London planning debates as ‘hyperdensity’. Nevertheless, the Chief Planner went on to tell the committee categorically: “We haven’t got a policy on density on which we could refuse this.”…

The yield, effectively the interest rate, on the benchmark 10-year UK government bonds (known as gilts) rose eight basis points (or 0.08 of a percentage point) to 5% on Monday. The yield on 30-year gilts rose 9.3 basis points to 5.67%, edging closer to the 28-year high of 5.78% last week when uncertainty about Starmer’s future as prime minister was intensifying. In his speech, Starmer said he would fight any leadership challenge and would not walk away from his responsibilities after Labour’s drubbing in local elections in England and parliamentary contests in Scotland and Wales last week. Borrowing costs fell on Friday as the results of the elections emerged with signs that Labour had not suffered as badly as first feared. Those falls, however, were more than erased by Monday’s rises. Susannah Streeter, the chief investment strategist at Wealth Club, a non-advisory investment service, said the speech had not “done the trick of calming bond markets”. “There is still a sense of jitters playing out as concerns about political instability collide with inflationary fears prompted by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East,” she said. Bond yields move in the opposite direction to bond prices because investors want to pay less and get a bigger reward for the risk of holding them. Higher yields increase the cost of borrowing for the government and eat away at the headroom that the chancellor, Rachel Reeves, has built up against her fiscal rules. Investors, however, are becoming increasingly worried that the risk of rising inflation as a result of soaring energy prices linked to the Iran war, alongside in-fighting among Labour MPs over Starmer’s future, will lead to a downgrade in the UK’s creditworthiness. Part of the worry is that if Starmer is forced out of Downing Street, his possible replacements may seek to increase public spending and loosen the government’s fiscal rules. Two potential frontrunners to succeed him, Angela Rayner and Andy Burnham, have hinted that they would like to see higher public spending.

Israel extends detention of ‘tortured’ Gaza flotilla activists Saif Abu Keshek and Thiago Avila of the Global Sumud Flotilla were both mistreated in Israeli detention An Israeli court has extended by two days the detention of two activists arrested aboard a Gaza-bound flotilla intercepted by Israeli forces in international waters, their lawyer said on Sunday. Saif Abu Keshek, a Spanish-Swedish national of Palestinian origin, and Thiago Avila, a Brazilian national, were detained by Israeli authorities late on Wednesday and brought to Israel, while more than 100 other pro-Palestine activists aboard the Global Sumud flotilla were taken to the Greek island of Crete. According to the Brazilian embassy, Avila said he had been subjected to torture, beatings and mistreatment in Israeli detention. During a monitored visit in which he was separated by glass and unable to communicate freely, embassy officials observed visible marks on his face. He also reported significant pain, particularly in his shoulder. Abu Keshek was “subjected to torture and severe abuse while detained aboard the military vessel prior to transfer”, the Global Sumud flotilla said, citing eyewitness testimony. An Israeli court spokesperson confirmed that the activists’ remand had been extended until 5 May. The governments of Spain and Brazil issued a joint statement on Friday calling their detention illegal. The second Global Sumud Flotilla set sail from Barcelona on 12 April in an attempt to break Israel’s blockade of Gaza by delivering humanitarian aid. Israeli authorities had initially requested a four-day extension of the activists’ detention on suspicion of a range of offences. The legal rights group Adalah, which is representing them, said the offences include assisting the enemy during wartime, contact with a foreign agent, membership in and providing services to a terrorist organisation, and the transfer of property for a terrorist organisation. Both men deny the allegations. Adalah solicitors Hadeel Abu Salih and Lubna Tuma argued before the court that the proceedings against the activists were “flawed and illegal”, stating that there is no legal basis for the “extraterritorial application of these offences to the actions of foreign nationals in international waters”. Abu Salih added that both men were subjected to violence en route to Israel and were kept handcuffed and blindfolded until Thursday morning. The Israeli military did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters. Israel’s foreign ministry has called the flotilla organisers “professional provocateurs”….

These violations are compounded by detention policies that result in serious and long-lasting physical and psychological harm, including injuries that cause permanent disability and impacts on the reproductive health of certain victims. The risks extend beyond the occurrence of violations to the mechanisms that enable and obscure them, with evidence pointing to medical facilitation or cover-ups in some cases, undermining professional ethics and violating the safeguards imposed by international law for the protection of detainees. In a troubling parallel, the report uncovers the Israeli medical system’s role in militarising medicine, with certain medical personnel shifting from caregivers to facilitators of torture’s legitimisation and continuation. This extends beyond denying life-saving treatment or participation in painful medical procedures without adequate anaesthesia or pain relief. It also includes issuing certificates of “fit for interrogation,” hiding torture injuries in medical records, and forcing detainees to cooperate with interrogators to get treatment. This pattern is further supported by documentation practices that obscure the perpetrator’s identity and hide doctors’ details, making it difficult to trace, preserve evidence, and hold individuals accountable. With the scale of violations growing, the report shows that the Israeli justice system has not functioned as an effective mechanism for accountability. Rather, it has been historically and systematically employed to entrench impunity for crimes committed against Palestinians, effectively making the judiciary the first line of defence for Israeli violations and their perpetrators. Nevertheless, this structural failure is especially clear in the detention and prison system, where judicial and oversight mechanisms often serve as a procedural cover that undermines independent oversight, normalises torture, and grants investigators and system administrators practical immunity. In this context, the incidents at Sde Teiman exemplify this pattern. The Israeli judicial system’s response extended beyond obstructing accountability. It showed signs of undermining evidence by restricting victims, as complainants and witnesses, from participating in proceedings and reclassifying serious incidents as minor offences or misdemeanours, ultimately culminating in the dismissal of charges in one of the most serious documented cases, despite their reliance on substantial medical and visual evidence. These facts collectively indicate an institutional reluctance to ensure effective accountability, thereby triggering the admissibility criteria and bolstering the International Criminal Court’s jurisdiction to investigate these crimes and prosecute perpetrators across the entire chain of command.

Politicians and media commentators often talk about government borrowing, but that is a misnomer. A more appropriate description would be to refer to it as corporate welfare, whereby the government offers corporations and super rich individuals risk free investment opportunities in government bonds. Pension funds often hold government bonds as part of their overall portfolio, but the truth is government borrowing makes little economic sense. Furthermore, a government that only borrows (issues bonds) in its own currency cannot ever default on its own debt because it can always issue an instruction to the Bank of England to settle the debt whenever anyone wants to redeem it. This enables governments, with the political will, to face down the financial markets. Although the primary purpose of taxation is to control inflation, its social purposes are also essential. It can be used to create the space for public spending priorities when the economy is at or near full capacity. Otherwise, inflation would be created because the public and private sectors would be chasing scarce resources. Taxation can also be used to address income and wealth inequality and incentivise or penalise certain activities like promoting healthy lifestyles by taxing smoking and reducing taxes on low emission vehicles etc. Tax is a reflection of society’s values and is the primary mechanism that governments have for reinforcing those values. So, to summarise: The government can and does create money. Government debt is just a means for saving private wealth. Deficits are not a problem, as long as they’re not overheating the economy, but taxation can be used to stop the economy over-heating. Governments cannot create money without limit. The key is ensuring public spending is matched to the availability of real resources in the economy. The Global Sumud Flotilla accused Israeli occupation forces of sexual assault and abuse against detained activists. Organizers said testimonies indicate systematic physical violence and degrading treatment. Two activists, Saif Abukeshek and Thiago Avila, remain in Israeli detention. Activists Report Sexual Abuse, Violence The Global Sumud Flotilla accused Israeli occupation forces on Thursday of carrying out acts of sexual assault, physical violence, and degrading treatment against activists aboard a Gaza-bound humanitarian mission intercepted in international waters. In a statement released by the coalition, organizers said preliminary testimonies from detained crew members and civilian participants point to what they described as “a pattern of severe physical and sexual violence and systematic degradation perpetrated against civilian participants.” According to the coalition, the testimonies were gathered directly from activists detained after Israeli forces seized the flotilla vessels. Organizers said the abuses form part of a broader effort aimed at intimidating international solidarity initiatives attempting to break the blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip. The flotilla departed from Barcelona on April 15 carrying humanitarian supplies intended for Gaza, where Palestinians continue to face catastrophic humanitarian conditions amid ongoing Israeli attacks and blockade measures. On April 29, activists aboard the vessels reported that Israeli naval forces intercepted the mission near the Greek island of Crete. According to flotilla organizers, Israeli forces seized the ships, damaged engines and navigation systems, and later withdrew from the area. The coalition argued the interception took place in international waters and therefore constituted a violation of international maritime law, particularly given the civilian and humanitarian nature of the mission.

Chinese-linked ships cross Strait of Hormuz on eve of Trump-Xi meeting Chinese supertanker carrying two million barrels of Iraqi crude crossed the waterway before turning off its transponder Multiple ships linked to China transited the Strait of Hormuz in the last 24 hours, coinciding with US President Donald Trump’s arrival in Beijing, where he says he plans to discuss the war on Iran with his Chinese counterpart. The most watched vessel is a Chinese supertanker carrying two million barrels of Iraqi crude. It sailed through the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday before turning off its transponder somewhere in the Gulf of Oman, according to ship tracking data. Iran has tried to assert its authority over the Strait of Hormuz by imposing a toll on vessels, while the US has imposed its own blockade on ships linked to Iran or those that agree to pay Tehran for the right of transit. A day earlier, six other Chinese-linked vessels crossed the Strait of Hormuz, including five oil tankers and one known to carry Liquefied Petroleum Gas, according to open-source intelligence analysts citing maritime tracking data. It’s unclear whether the Chinese-linked vessels paid any toll to Iran, but Tehran previously accepted Chinese yuan as payment. Trump arrived in Beijing on Wednesday. He will start his two-day visit on Thursday, meeting his counterpart, Xi Jinping. Business and trade deals are at the top of the agenda for the leaders of the world’s two largest economies, but Iran will loom large in the background. Trump told reporters before leaving for Beijing that “we’re going to have a long talk about [Iran]”, even as he insisted that he did not need Beijing’s help to strike a deal with the Islamic Republic. “We have a lot of things to discuss. I wouldn’t say Iran is one of them, to be honest with you, because we have Iran very much under control,” he added. China is the US’s only peer rival. The two are locked in competition over artificial intelligence, critical minerals and Taiwan. The US’s failure to subdue Iran has been welcomed in China, and the emerging power has not just been sitting idle on the sidelines. Middle East Eye was the first to report that China provided air defence systems to Iran following its June 2025 conflict with Israel that culminated in the US attacking Iranian nuclear facilities. The Financial Times reported that Iran used a sophisticated Chinese satellite to target US military bases in the Gulf. Uh they have the Geranium 2, 3, 4, 5, six. Now the six, which is a just basically like a V2 looking uh rocket. Um and the Russians are just pumping these things out. Um they’re stockpiling them. The Russians just showed the other day that they can saturate Ukraine’s airspace. 1,500 launched in a day. Uh they can expand that launch capacity. Um they can darken the skies of Europe and Europe has no air defense. I’ll just say that one more time. Europe has no air defense. There’s no air defense in Europe today. The Germans know this. Uh they said, “What can we do to stop the a Russian attack on uh Germany?” The answer is nothing. There’s nothing you can do because you have nothing. you literally have no air defense capacity. Russia can darken the skies of Europe with drones. Um, again, if they want to put 3,000 drones over uh Europe a day, um, you know, and I just told you what their their capacity, they’ve been they’ve been, you know, bankrolling 700 a day. So, in 10 days, that’s 7,000. Uh, in a month that’s 21,000. It’s now been a couple years. So, the Russians will be able to sustain a 3,000 drone a day attack against a continent that can’t defend itself for several months, meaning they will literally flatten everything. There’s nothing Europe can do. Now, we bring we bring to bear the fact that the archnik and other long range missiles because the United States in our stupidity have withdrawn from the INF treaty and now the Russians have had to take action.

To my mind, there’s only one way to describe those marches. They are hate marches. Suella Braverman went as far as explicitly stated Mark Rowley must go. Leaked emails have exposed that the INSS runs counter influence projects with the Israeli internal intelligence agency the Shinbet and the Israeli external intelligence agency Mossad and with the military intelligence Aman. The current head of the INSS is none other than Tame Hayman. He is the former chief of Israeli military intelligence Aman. The previous leadership of the INSS is Amos Yaoing who was also formerly the chief of the military intelligence. Many of the researchers at the INSS were formerly employed by Mossad, the Shinbet and the Aman. And while of course the INSS claims that it is independent, it has received funding from the Israeli Ministry of Defense and the National Cyber Directorate in the Israeli government. In fact, the INSS goes so far as regularly submitting strategic analysis for the Israeli president.

To quote: ‘Please let us know when you or Dave would like to come and retrieve your equipment and drop off your keys. Chloe Slater (formerly Jez and self-defined as ‘she’) also made it difficult for us to retrieve the last of our equipment by inferring we couldn’t be trusted, we were made to wait outside their building for over 30 minutes to return their mixing desk in December 2024.

March 2020 – BCfm’s weekly Politics Show presented by Tony Gosling with Irish Republican Labour activist Martin Summers was forced off FM, now online only by station manager Pat Hart. He decided the show should be ‘rested, due to the pandemic’ on 24 March 2020 and then refused to communicate at all when we requested to do the show remotely. Bristol Community FM (BCfm) charity ‘CEO’ Patrick Hart is a longtime personal friend of Bristol’s all-powerful right-wing ‘Labour’ mayor Marvin Rees. Now on Internet only NOT The BCfm Politics Show is available 17:00-c. 21:00 live on Fridays. Pat Hart replaced us with an inane student show repeating MSM stories called The Bristol Agenda. February 2019 – Ofcom complaint result: UKLFI exposed as creation of Israeli foreign ministry – Bristol Post article: BCfm cleared after being reported to Ofcom for anti-semitic conspiracy theories – It could have resulted in BCfm radio station being shut down if the complaint was upheld Tony Gosling reported to Ofcom by UK Lawyers for Israel after being accused of anti-semitism A Bristol radio station, which had one of its programmes reported for anti-semitism and racism has been cleared by Ofcom. The radio regulatory body received a complaint from “UK Lawyers for Israel’ over a show on BCfm radio, hosted by investigative journalist Tony Gosling. The weekly politics show, on the popular community radio station based in Easton, was reported for several allegations on a show which aired on November 23. Tony Gosling, who was a former BBC journalist between 1989 and 1993, has been producing and presenting ‘The Tony Gosling Politics’ show every week on BCFM radio for 11 years. They have released a statement which reads: “Whilst we are supportive of all our volunteer presenters, The Tony Gosling Politics Show only represents approximately ten percent of our political output content wise, and less than two per cent of our entire weekly output.” Mr Gosling’s programme looks at local politics and he interviews a range of councillors and MPs in the city. The show is also perhaps more well known for its alternative look at international politics, and he has a cult following online from across the world. Mr Gosling has made regular appearances on national media including the politics show with Andrew Neil on BBC One, and international channels such as Russia Today, Channel1 Russia, NTV, and recently for both Turkish and Lebanon TV.
November 2012 – Tony gets death threats on the phone from the Jewish Defence League – ‘you’re a dead man walking’ – a man calls him and Tony records the call. Audio of UK Jewish Defence League (JDL) death threat against British journalist Tony Gosling (2012) – Avon and Somerset police Special Branch investigate, trace the caller, and after six months report to Tony that the individual has been served a caution that they will proceed with a prosecution for harassment under the 1861 offences against the person act. Seems pretty clear this death threat was issued alongside the lies, copied below, which were published on their blog by London based UK JDL in November 2012. Firstly Tony Gosling is not a ‘homophobe’. That accusation was first made in an article published by the ‘Harry’s Place’ blog, penned by Zionist David Toube and propelled by him anonymously into Private Eye in 2008. It refers to Gosling’s criticism of senior teachers at Bannerman Road Primary school in Bristol who used homosexual early learning picture books against the express wishes of the parent governors. His criticism was about the deception by teaching staff not because of the homosexual content of the books. Secondly, if you follow the JDL link you’ll find what Tony Gosling actually says about the ‘Protocols Of The Learned Elders Of Zion’ says “…I don’t think there is much doubt that the Protocols are fake…” Thirdly he is not a member of Bristol Palestine Solidarity Campaign and has never been to any of their meetings.
Autumn 2014 – Tony’s documentary production and distribution business shut down by its bank. Our thriving Co-op business bank account ordered closed for undisclosed reasons. Tony Gosling and Ben Edwards founded i-Contact Video Network to distribute documentaries on VHS video and DVD and to make their own documentaries as well as attend news events and sell video footage to TV news channels. Amongst the films we distributed were Operation Solstice, Coconut Revolution, Mark Purdey and Organophosphates, McLibel, 9/11 In Plane Site, Ludicrous Diversion and The Battle of Trafalgar. These, plus books, and even a board game about drug dealing ‘Dollars and Dibble’, were all available via mail order and we supplied libraries around the world too. The bank had clearly been ordered to investigate us for money laundering, although they never admitted it. All the questions they asked Ben and I were about proving our identity through passports etc.. When we did, yet more letters kept arriving demanding more proofs, birth certificates etc. and eventually when one of us missed supplying the required information, within a week or so of being asked, the account was summarily closed and we got a cheque made out to one of us with the few hundred pounds that was in the business bank account. Since neither of us could get a business bank account up and running for at least a few months and the bank account meant nobody could any longer use the website, we made the reluctant decision to shut it down. Thus was a thriving business killed off by the Co_operative bank. Having said that, co-op were not quite the worst. We did apply to open an account at Bristol’s ‘ethical’ Triodos bank, who proceeded to string us along for several months and then said our business was too risky for them to provide an account!
