AI uses loads of energy in data centres – Business Insider The cloud uses massive amounts of energy. Generative AI will be way worse. A Microsoft data center veteran warns big changes are coming. Training AI models in data centers uses up to three times more energy than traditional cloud tasks. Most existing data centers don’t have the infrastructure to handle this surge in new demand. The next generation of data centers will be a major drain on resources. Last year, Data Center Alley nearly ran out of power.Bit coin use of huge amount of energy in data centres. This area of Northern Virginia is home to more data centers than anywhere else in the US and the local utility Dominion Energy warned it might not be able to meet surging demand. This happened before a ChatGPT-inspired AI boom that is set to double or triple the amount of energy consumed by new types of data centers. What’s coming will probably make the Dominion Energy debacle look like a walk in the park, according to industry executives, researchers, and analysts. Major cloud providers including Amazon, Microsoft, and Google are racing to meet demand for generative AI, and access to electricity could become even more important than clever new model designs or computing heft. What’s clear is that today’s data centers are not built to support this new era of technology. “It’s staggering,” said Marc Ganzi, CEO of DigitalBridge, an investment firm that owns and operates data centers, fiber networks, and other tech infrastructure. “Not sure how we do it.” By 2030, data centers are expected to reach 35 gigawatts of power consumption annually, up from 17 gigawatts last year, according to McKinsey. A recent Cowen research report estimated that AI data centers could require more than five times the power of traditional facilities. The coming competition for energy resources The tech industry, and society in general, is not ready for this new energy-intensive wave. But there are early signs of a troubling future where Big Tech builds AI models that disrupt companies and put people out of work — all while competing against them for resources and potentially raising their energy bills. Earlier this year, weapons manufacturer Nammo said it couldn’t expand a factory because a data center used by TikTok was slurping up all the spare power in the area, according to The Financial Times. This is “a taste of things to come, as data centers supporting great money-printing machine minds compete with other big industries for electricity,” Jack Clark, a co-founder of Google-backed AI startup Anthropic, wrote in a recent industry newsletter. AI model training is especially energy intensive. It requires the use of graphic processing units. These GPUs are specialized chips that multitask better and work faster than central processing units, or CPUs, which run most traditional cloud services. AI computer servers being installed in data centers are often equipped with multiple GPUs, usually supplied by Nvidia. Each GPU consumes up to about 400 watts of power, so one AI server can consume 2 kilowatts. A regular cloud server uses 300 to 500 watts, according to Shaolei Ren, a researcher at UC Riverside who has studied how modern AI models use resources. For instance, the power consumption of Nvidia’s new GH200 server cluster is about two to four times more than a regular cluster of the same physical size, he estimated. Tom Keane, who oversaw Microsoft’s cloud data centers for about two decades, recently warned about this. Microsoft is the main backer of OpenAI, creator of ChatGPT and builder of the most powerful AI models around. “In the case of a training data center, you make that as big as possible, you put as many computers in there as possible and you’re running that data center at full utilization all of the time,” Keane told Bernstein analyst Mark Moerdler in a recent interview. “That physical data center starts to become more resource intensive. You start to design that AI data center very differently.” An AI data center will need up to three times more power than a traditional cloud facility, he estimated. A regular setup might have 30 kilowatts powering a rack of cloud computer servers, while a new AI version of this will need 100 kilowatts, he estimated. “Everything begins to change when you think about what AI represents,” he added. (Keane left Microsoft last year, about a month after an Insider report revealed he was verbally abusive to some employees. At the time, Keane didn’t respond to requests for comment.) A ‘massive’ opportunity The surge in AI demand, and the changes coming, present an opportunity for investors like Ganzi. “Massive would be the understatement,” he said. This year, DigitalBridge is focused on building and upgrading data centers to handle generative AI workloads, deploying nearly $8 billion to meet this new demand, Ganzi told Insider. One key difference between traditional data centers and new AI facilities is how power is consumed. Regular cloud data centers are designed to handle variable demand. When everyone in the US is working and streaming videos, these facilities are busy. When night falls and most people sleep, usage falls. In contrast, AI data centers run constantly, especially when training big models. That requires increased access to power and the ability to sustain it consistently. ‘The data center of the future is not in Virginia’ For companies like DigitalBridge, that means going outside existing major data center markets to build a new generation of facilities that will power the AI boom. At DataBank, a data center provider backed by DigitalBridge, Ganzi is putting smaller data centers in the suburbs of “tier two and tier three cities,” where the electricity grid is established but not stressed by existing energy-sucking cloud workloads. Proximity to smaller urban areas means better power density, which means a faster connection. Smaller cities also mean lower power costs for the data center operator. Ideal locations for future data centers will be in low-cost areas, according Cowen. “The data center of the future is not in Virginia, it’s not in Santa Clara, it’s not in Dallas, Texas,” Ganzi said. “Those are the major markets right now, and there’s a limitation of the amount of power you can get in those markets.” Do you work at a major cloud provider? Electric Car ‘Net Zero’ FRAUD! Mahyar Tousi  on Manhattan Institute survey about electric cars – they use as much CO2 as other cars. Face it: Electric cars don’t do much of anything for the environment Electric-car sales are up 66% this year. President Joe Biden promotes them, saying things like “The great American road trip is going to be fully electrified” and “There’s no turning back.” To make sure we have no choice in the matter, some left-leaning states have moved to ban gas-powered cars altogether. California Gov. Gavin Newsom issued an executive order banning them by 2035. Oregon, Massachusetts and New York copied California. Washington state’s politicians said they’d make it happen even faster, by 2030. Thirty countries also say they’ll phase out gas-powered cars. But this is just dumb. It will not happen. It’s magical thinking. Let me point out some “inconvenient” facts about electric cars, simple truths that politicians and green activists just don’t seem to understand. “Electric cars are amazing,” says physicist Mark Mills of the Manhattan Institute. “But they won’t change the future in any significant way [as far as] oil use or carbon dioxide emissions.” Inconvenient fact No. 1: Selling more electric cars won’t reduce oil use very much. “The world has 15, 18 million electric vehicles now,” says Mills. “If we (somehow) get to 500 million, that would reduce world oil consumption by about 10%. That’s not nothing, but it doesn’t end the use of oil.” Most of the world’s oil is used by things like “airplanes, buses, big trucks and the mining equipment that gets the copper to build the electric cars. Even if all vehicles somehow did switch to electricity, there’s another problem: Electricity isn’t very green. I laugh talking to friends who are all excited about their electric car, assuming it doesn’t pollute. They go silent when I ask, “Where does your car’s electricity come from?” They don’t know. They haven’t even thought about it. Inconvenient fact No. 2: Although driving an electric car puts little additional carbon into the air, producing the electricity to charge its battery adds plenty. Most of America’s electricity is produced by burning natural gas and coal. Just 12% comes from wind or solar power. Auto companies don’t advertise that. “Electric vehicles in general are better and more sustainable for the environment,” says Ford’s Linda Zhang in a BBC interview. see also No, Biden, the discussion about climate change hasn’t ‘ended’ “She’s a Ford engineer,” I say to Mills. “She’s not ignorant.” “She’s not stupid,” he replies. “But ignorance speaks to what you know. You have to mine, somewhere on earth, 500,000 pounds of minerals and rock to make one battery.” American regulations make mining difficult, so most of it is done elsewhere, polluting those countries. Some mining is done by children. Some is done in places that use slave labor. Even if those horrors didn’t exist, mining itself adds lots of carbon to the air. “If you’re worried about carbon dioxide,” says Mills, “the electric vehicle has emitted 10 to 20 tons of carbon dioxide [from the mining, manufacturing and shipping] before it even gets to your driveway.” “Volkswagen published an honest study [that points out] that the first 60,000 miles or so you’re driving an electric vehicle, that electric vehicle will have emitted more carbon dioxide than if you just drove a conventional vehicle.” You would have to drive an electric car “100,000 miles” to reduce emissions by just “20% or 30%, which is not nothing, but it’s not zero.”

Farage’s Coutts bank account shut down for ideological reasons –  who next?      Nigel Farage: Coutts document ‘shows bank account shut over my views’  Nigel Farage says he has evidence that Coutts bank decided to close his account because his views “do not align” with their values. Writing in the Telegraph, he said he had gained access to a report by the bank’s wealth reputational risk committee via a subject access request. The BBC previously reported that his account was being closed because he fell below the financial threshold. Coutts said decisions to close accounts included reputational considerations. In the Telegraph article, former UKIP leader Mr Farage says that the “36-page” document shows that he was targeted “on personal and political grounds”. According to what the Telegraph says are minutes of a meeting of Coutts’ wealth reputational risk committee held on November 17 2022, they read: “The committee did not think continuing to bank NF [Nigel Farage] was compatible with Coutts given his publicly-stated views that were at odds with our position as an inclusive organisation. “This was not a political decision but one centred around inclusivity and purpose.” He also said there was a perception that he was regarded as “racist and xenophobic”, which he called an “appalling slur”. The BBC has not seen the document. In a video posted to his Twitter account, Mr Farage said he put in a subject access request because he wanted to establish the reason “behind them closing the account”. He said it read like “a brief that you could give to a barrister ahead of a serious criminal trial”, and made several references to Brexit and Russia. He added that the document said that closing his accounts for financial reasons was not justified because his “economic contribution is now sufficient to retain on a commercial basis”. Coutts said: “Our ability to respond is restricted by our obligations of client confidentiality. “Decisions to close accounts are not taken lightly and take into account a number of factors including commercial viability, reputational considerations, and legal and regulatory requirements.” Last month, Mr Farage went public with the fact that his account was being shut, and said he believed it was for political reasons. He later said he had been turned down by nine other lenders. But people familiar with Coutts’ move subsequently told the BBC it was a “commercial decision”, and that the criteria for holding an account with the bank “are clear from the bank’s website”. Coutts requires its customers to borrow or invest at least £1m with the bank or hold £3m in savings.

The verdict was unanimous despite Mr. Hayes’ surprising non-guilty plea. The trader was arrested by the City of London police and the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) in December 2012 after evidence of his involvement in the Japanese yen LIBOR rate manipulation was found. Nicknamed by his fellow colleagues as “Rain Man” similar to a movie character suffering from autism, Mr. Hayes was allegedly one of the leading figures in a conspiracy to manipulate global benchmarks involving a web of 25 traders and brokers from about 10 companies…..

Three businessmen involved in eccentric aristocrat Heinrich XIII Prinz Reuss’s plan to overthrow Germany’s government and replace it with a pro-Russian monarchy had been invited to a meeting at the Russian Consulate General in Leipzig on Dec 8 last year, public broadcaster MDR reported. But the meeting never took place because the trio were among 25 people arrested the day before across 11 German states over the coup plot. Many of the 25 were members of the Reichsbuerger, or citizens of the German empire movement, authorities said. Police found printouts of an email exchange between the trio and the Russian consulate after a raid on one of the suspects’ houses in the Ore mountains on the German-Czech border.

Bombing of Kerch Bridge – British?  Leaked files suggest hidden British hand in latest Kerch Bridge strike The Grayzone has exposed British intelligence freelancers for collaborating with Ukraine’s Security Service to destroy Kerch Bridge. Leaked documents suggest they played a role in the latest attack on the bridge, and may be helping Kiev hunt down accused collaborators. On July 16, a predawn assault on the Kerch Bridge connecting Crimea with mainland Russia left two civilians dead and a 14-year-old injured. As advisors to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hinted at Ukraine’s culpability, Russian President Vladimir Putin pointed his finger at Kiev and vowed revenge. The attack was the second attempt at destroying the Kerch Bridge in less than a year. On October 8th 2022, a suicide attacker remotely detonated a truck bomb on the bridge, killing three and inflicting such severe damage the vehicular crossing remained closed until February this year, while railroad traffic resumed in May. As The Grayzone revealed two days after the bombing, a cabal of British mlitary-intelligence freelancers had drafted detailed plans for destroying Kerch Bridge months earlier. The blueprints were drawn up at the behest of Chris Donnelly, a senior intelligence operative and former high ranking NATO advisor. His transnational nexus manages London’s contribution to the proxy war at arm’s length, in conjunction with the Security Service of Ukraine’s (SBU) Odessa branch. After an initial burst of Ukrainian public and governmental celebration in the wake of the first Kerch bombing, officials in Kiev quickly backtracked, claiming it was in fact a Russian false flag. In May this year, SBU chief Vasyl Maliuk finally admitted his agency undertook “certain measures” to carry out the attack, coercing an innocent truck driver into unwittingly and unwillingly serving as a suicide bomber. This time, the SBU appears to have used unmanned submarines to target Kerch Bridge with explosives. A review of leaked files previously revealed by The Grayzone provides a solid basis for again blaming Donnelly’s cabal. These files show Prevail Partners as the cutout enlisted to train a secret Ukrainian partisan army to target Russian territory with terror attacks. Prevail pledged to provide the SBU with extensive targeting expertise and technology for operations targeting Crimea – particularly, the Kerch Bridge. They also raise grave questions about whether the Ukrainian Security Service is being assisted in its criminal war on collaborators by Donnelly’s shadowy clique…
