Thousands back St Nick’s Market traders as they fight council’s controversial plan “We don’t feel we’ve been properly heard. They’ve listened to us, but they are not hearing what we are saying” Market stall holders and street food businesses at Bristol’s iconic St Nick’s Market say they are facing a battle for survival, as city council bureaucrats want to hike the rents to extract another quarter of a million pounds a year from the venue. Thousands have signed a petition calling on the council to think again, and the stallholder leading the campaign said she and the other businesses are ‘overwhelmed’ by the show of support from people in the city. Lynn Hanby said if the rent hikes and overhaul of the system proposed by Bristol City Council officers goes through, it will ‘put many stallholders out of business and change the entire nature of the market’ forever. Article continues below The council has been involved in a ten-month back and forth consultation process with St Nick’s Market since the end of last year, but Bristol Live understands an impasse has been reached, which sparked Lynn and other traders to launch a petition and a campaign to save the market. Bristol Live reported back in December that the council was first proposing a new system of collecting rents based on taking 15 per cent of each stall’s turnover. That proposal met fierce resistance from the market stallholders, so a second proposal was made by the council – to make the system fairer by setting rents based solely on the square foot area each stall takes up. “We’re all for making the rents fairer, but the issue is the council are using this change to take more money from St Nick’s,” said Lynn, who has run the Aardvark arts and crafts stall for 34 years. “At first they said they wanted this process to bring an extra £115,000 a year to the council, and then they moved the goalposts and said they want it to increase the amount the council receives by £265,000,” she added. St Nick’s Market attracts a whopping 3.7 million visitors every year, features in pretty much every Bristol tourist video blog, and is regularly cited in all the ‘spend a day in Bristol’ travel guides. It has three distinct areas – a traditional market stall set-up in the main Exchange Hall building, a Covered Market that is mainly services and retail and the Glass Arcade where the famous street food stalls and businesses are. Over the decades, market managers have filled vacant stalls charging different rents, so there is a wide disparity in all areas with some stallholders paying more than others for similar spots. “We welcome the idea of levelling it all out, but this should be done fairly in a way which keeps things affordable,” said Lynn. “The first idea to simply take 15 per cent of turnover would have really badly affected the street food stalls, which have a high turnover but low profit margins.

LONDON FREE SPEECH RALLY ENTIRELY HIJACKED BY ZIOISTS One of the final speakers was former SAS soldier turned right-wing activist Ant Middleton, who used the stage to announce he will be running for London Mayor as an independent. Due to the enormous number of guests they ran out of time meaning Carl Benjamin (AKA Sargon of Akkad), ‘Young Bob’, former MP Andrew Bridgen and Chris ‘Billboard Chris’ Elston who had travelled from Canada, were unable to give their speeches. Britain’s Biggest Far-Right Protest: More than 100,000 attend Tommy Robinson’s Unite The Kingdom Rally Today saw Britain’s largest ever far-right protest with police estimating 150,000 people in attendance for the “Unite the Kingdom” rally. Organised by Stephen Lennon — aka Tommy Robinson — the event attracted some of the most extreme figures in the British far right. Although the event was nominally concerned with “unity, boldness and truth”, it was marred by far-right campaigners expressing the belief that Britain is being invaded by Islam. Across Saturday afternoon, the crowd were subjected to an array of speeches by high profile far-right figures from the UK and abroad including, Elon Musk (who appeared by video link), the French far-right politician Éric Zemmour, Rebel News’s Ezra Levant and politicians and activists from Germany, Poland, Holland, Ireland, Spain, Belgium and New Zealand. As the day progressed, scuffles broke out between Lennon supporters, counter-protestors, and the police lines separating them. Small groups intent on violence did manage to push through the police, forcing them to deploy dogs in response. “A number of officers have been assaulted,” said a Metropolitan Police statement. Arrest at Unite The Kingdom Demonstration Islamophobia permeated the speeches on Whitehall. “This is a religious war,” said Brian Tamaki, leader of New Zealand’s Destiny Church. “Islam, Hinduism, Bahá’í, Buddhism — whatever else you’re into — they’re all false. We’ve got to clean our countries up. Get rid of everything that doesn’t receive Jesus Christ. Ban any public expression of other religions in our Christian nations. Ban halal. Ban burqas. Ban mosques, temples, shrines — we don’t want those in our countries.” After his speech, several flags were torn up on stage, including the Palestinian flag. This brand of Christian extremism has become increasingly prominent at Lennon’s demonstrations. The day’s soundtrack was provided by the Christian rock singer Rikki Doolan from the Spirit Embassy church in north London. At one point, he shouted skywards, imploring the rain to stop “in the name of Jesus”.

For the past year, the Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa has held regular rallies in cities around New Zealand, calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and drawing attention to the ongoing genocide. If you attended one the rallies in Otautahi Christchurch you may have encountered a small counter-protest, sometimes as small as one man- specifically, Destiny Church pastor Derek Tait- and perhaps a couple of hangers on. Destiny Church has emerged as possibly the largest faction of Israel supporters in this country. There are more Israel-supporting evangelical Christians than there are Jewish people in Aotearoa, and of course a significant proportion of the Jewish population, represented by groups like Dayenu and Alternative Jewish Voices, are opposed to the occupation of Palestine. Destiny Church leader Bishop Brian Tamaki can usually pull a bigger crowd than Tait. At a protest he held outside parliament in December 2023, he described himself as a “spiritual Jew”. Destiny Church Pastor Nigel Woodley speaking at the same rally stated that “Israel’s right to defend itself includes the right to wage war until there is an unconditional surrender.” This was not Tamaki’s first protest in support of Israel, he had previously appeared on Israeli television, who showed Destiny Church members performing a Haka before the host asked Brian Tamaki how he decided that “the Maori tribe” would support Israel. Tamaki has been used by Israeli media to claim support for Israel’s actions by indigenous people. At the December rally Tamaki described himself as “a bit of a star over there” This is in stark contrast to Israeli news anchors claiming that Brian Tamaki is representative of Maori support for Israel. What Tamaki actually represents is his own evangelical church. His support for Israel comes from an ideology that is today called Christian Zionism. This ideology began with 17th century puritans in England who believed that for a Biblical prophecy to be fulfilled Jewish people needed to return to historical Israel. Deuteronomy 30:4–5 reads: “Even if you are exiled to the ends of the world, from there the Lord your God will gather you, and from there he will bring you back. The Lord your God will bring you into the land that your ancestors possessed, and you will possess it; he will make you more prosperous and numerous than your ancestors.”

Police ‘hunt’ man at Tommy Robinson rally who called for Keir Starmer’s assassination The Metropolitan Police are searching for a man at Tommy Robinson’s rally who called for Keir Starmer to be assassinated and specifically for someone to shoot him Police are hunting a man who was filmed as he called for Prime Minister Keir Starmer to be assassinated during Tommy Robinson’s London march. During an interview with former Conservative councillor and conspiracy theorist William Coleshill, the demonstrator was heard saying: “Keir Starmer needs to be assassinated, someone needs to shoot Keir Starmer.” Coleshill pushed back, although he did call for Starmer to face trial then be “lawfully executed”. The UK has not had the death penalty since 1965. The footage has been seen thousands of times online and sparked a forceful reaction online. One person wrote on social media: “Hope the Met [Police] get this man.” A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said officers were investigating the video. They told The Mirror: “We’re aware of a video circulating on social media from the ‘Unite the Kingdom’ protest on Saturday, 13 September in central London. “Officers are investigating and enquiries are ongoing to identify a man. No arrests have been made so far. Anyone with information is asked to call 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.” As of Sunday afternoon, no arrests have been made in connection with the video. The clip emerged during the Unite the Kingdom rally in central London on Saturday. Between 110,000 and 150,000 anti-migrant activists marched through central London, with police reporting officers had been assaulted and that they faced “unacceptable violence” as thugs attempted to reach smaller groups of counter demonstrators. POLICE ARREST WINDSOR CASTLE PROJECTIONISTS FOR ‘MALICIOUS COMMUNICATION’ Campaigners say arrests over Windsor video of Trump and Epstein a ‘ridiculous overreaction’ ‘No laws are broken, nobody’s hurt, no property was damaged,’ says Led By Donkeys The police crackdown over a video of United States President Donald Trump and convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein projected onto Windsor Castle has been dubbed a “ridiculous overreaction”. Thames Valley Police said four men were arrested on suspicion of malicious communications following the stunt. One is a 60-year-old from East Sussex and one is a 37-year-old from Kent. The other two men, both from London, are aged 36 and 50. The film, created by political campaign group Led By Donkeys, lasted nine minutes and was projected from a hotel room with a direct view to the castle. It covered the history of Mr Trump’s links to Epstein, including the recent release by US authorities of a raft of documents alleged to include a letter from the president to Epstein to celebrate his 50th birthday. It was an act of “peaceful protest”, a spokesperson said. “My colleagues were arrested for malicious communications, which seems ridiculous, because we’ve done 25 or 30 projections before, no one’s ever been arrested. “In fact, sometimes the police have just watched while we’ve done it. “So suddenly, because it’s Trump [no, Tampon Charlie], you get this reaction, which is surprising, disappointing and very heavy-handed from police. “I think they’ve been arrested for embarrassing Donald Trump. It’s because Donald Trump’s got a very thin skin. They’re protecting his ego.” The King is hosting the US president and his wife, first lady Melania Trump, at Windsor Castle until 19 September. A 24-hours-a-day policing operation is in place in the Berkshire town during the event, with a temporary order restricting the airspace until 18 September. But the campaign group argued they planned the stunt over weeks and took steps to avoid alarming police officers on the streets of Windsor. “We deliberately did it just before he arrived, so that the police wouldn’t be concerned for his (Donald Trump’s) safety,” the spokesperson said. “We’ve had legal advice before. There’s nothing illegal about this. “No laws are broken, nobody’s hurt, no property was damaged, and yet – look at the reaction. “So it’s just a ridiculous overreaction.”

Commonwealth (King Charles and MI6) ‘hid Pakistani election rigging’ Military regime ‘stole’ 2024 election from Imran Khan’s PTI party using fraud and voter manipulation, leaked report finds The Commonwealth has been accused of colluding with Pakistan’s military-backed government to cover up widespread election rigging. The Commonwealth Secretariat acts as an independent observer for its members’ elections and sent a 13-person delegation to Pakistan for the February 2024 vote. But for the first time in its 70-year history, the organisation failed to publish their findings, instead praising the fairness of the vote and Pakistan’s democratic process. The report, which until now had been suppressed, had in reality found widespread rigging and accused the government of violating “fundamental political rights, including freedom of association, assembly and expression”. The military-backed regime limited the ability of Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party to campaign, forcing its members to run as independents and banning the use of electoral symbols, the Secretariat found. ‘Consistently limited one party’s ability’ The report, obtained by Drop Site News and now leaked in full, found widespread fraud and manipulation that tilted the result in favour of Pakistan’s current government. The observer team said the government’s decisions “consistently limited one party’s ability to contest the election on a level playing field”. They also noted “a number of discrepancies between polling station results forms and tabulated results forms at the constituency level, which may have resulted in some candidates being unlawfully” declared winners. The Commonwealth Secretariat informally shared their findings with the Pakistani government soon after it was submitted to then Secretary General Patricia Scotland, but Pakistan then allegedly asked the Commonwealth to suppress it. The agency appeared to comply, burying one of the most detailed reports highlighting the widespread electoral fraud that the Pakistani military used to hang onto power, Drop Site said. Protocol requires the Secretariat to publish election reports within days of the votes, but the report never appeared on the Commonwealth’s website. The European Union has also not published its report yet. A report that should have been released days after the election is still being suppressed,” Syed Zulfikar Bukhari, a spokesman of Khan’s PTI, said. “This was the most rigged and fraudulent election in Pakistan’s history and the ‘independent observer’ that was tasked to expose these atrocities seems to be complicit in them,” Mr Bukhari said. “They (the Commonwealth) are complicit in the murder of democracy in Pakistan.”

I I wanted to go along to both the Tommy Robinson event to identify the type of character uh people beliefs that people were there for and I also wanted to go along to the counter-protest. I didn’t manage to make it to that because when I got there there was a there was a a row of police blocking access to them and there are a lot of Tommy Robinson supporters uh pressing up against the police lines and therefore it wasn’t possible. Personally on that question I would wonder why it is the police agreed to have two counter-protest demonstrations on such sharply conflictual issues in Whitehall itself. I find that a little bit odd given the fact that only a month or or two months ago there was a Palestine demonstration that was forbidden from going marching to the BBC and was restricted to remaining inside Whitewater and they weren’t able to march anywhere without getting arrested and Piers Corbyn who we know quite well was was arrested for going to the BBC at that time and presenting a bunch of flowers and so I can’t see why it is that the police would have authorised and the Home Office and the authorities authorized two demonstrations which were directly in conflict with each other on such uh uh sharply divided political opinions to gather in the same street. I find it most odd. Uh and there was of course some conflict which broke out afterwards. the newspapers and um uh television stations and radio stations have reported an estimated 100,000. Then they changed it to 150,000. My own belief is there was something between perhaps 300 and 500,000 people there. It was extremely large demonstration on behalf of Tommy Robinson and Co. extremely large demonstration and uh and it reflects genuine mood with amongst certain sections of the population who are angry at migration. Now migration I looked at the statistics this morning and um the peculiarity is when you look at the data on migration uh in the last 10 years the biggest spike in migration followed Brexit. Now, it’s quite peculiar because Brexit was clearly an issue where the population were or the majority who voted in favor of Brexit um what is it 52 to 48 whatever the the the statistic was uh were clearly hostile to free movement and migration inside the European Union. And yet after Brexit there was this giant spike in the amount of people who migrated into Britain. And so I find that a little bit odd. Uh some people put conspiracies behind that. I’m not sure that that’s necessarily the case, but it certainly is peculiar that the main spike in migration took place after Brexit in particular after uh the Corona virus events.

Ridiculous ‘Nature Minister’ Mary Creagh announces an absurd ban on burning peat. DEFRA: Burning banned on England’s deep peat to ‘protect wildlife’ while humans freeze Local communities are set to be destroyed, following an announcement that the government will extend the ban on burning vegetation on deep peat as part of new plans to protect both the environment and public health. The burning ban will protect our globally unique network of peatlands which are commonly referred to as the Earth’s lungs. Peatlands improve water and air quality, create habitats for wildlife, absorb carbon and help protect communities from flooding. To deliver these benefits, they must be in a healthy condition but 80% of peatlands across England are dried out and deteriorating and actually emit carbon dioxide contributing to global warming. Burning vegetation on deep peat causes the release of harmful smoke into the air, impacting air quality across communities. This includes harmful air pollutants for human health, including ones strongly associated with strokes, cardiovascular disease, asthma and some lung cancers. The move as part of the government’s Plan for Change sees the burning ban extended to cover 676,628 hectares of deep peat up from the current 222,000 hectares – meaning an area equivalent to the size of Devon will now be better protected. The extension comes into force from 30 September. Environment Minister Mary Creagh said: “Our peatlands are England’s Amazon Rainforest – home to our most precious wildlife, storing carbon and reducing flooding downstream. “Burning on peatland releases harmful smoke ruining local air quality and damaging the precious ecosystems found in these iconic landscapes. “Restricting burning will help us restore and rewet peatlands. These new measures will create resilient peatlands that are naturally protected from wildfires.” The extension comes following a consultation on measures announced earlier this year, and expands protections to all deep peat in the uplands, and redefines deep peat from the current 40cm to 30cm depth.

US Health Secretary Robert Kennedy JR discusses Covid pandemic mRNA jab dangers, US Foreign Policy and his faith. Recently, a great friend of mine who’s American, he has he’s been treated for Crohn’s disease. It’s an inflammatory bowel disease as you know and he was stunned to find that he pays $3,000 a month for the for the the medicine he’s prescribed here in America and once he was in S. Paulo Brazil he paid simply $400 for the same exact medicine. Uh many Brazilians and I would guess citizens of the whole world kind of worried that this could push drug companies to raise prices abroad. uh what is how are you looking at this particular uh policy right now? Well, they you know the United States basically pays for global pharmaceutical research. So, US citizens uh we account for about 70% of of the profits for the pharmaceutical industry. We’re only 4.2% of the world’s population. And the reason for that is that other countries simply won’t pay for it. And so the drug companies sell to other nations to say we’re not going to pay for these more, you know, these more expensive prices. And what we’ve now told the drug companies is whatever the lowest price that you’re paying in any other nation, that’s what you’re going to charge here. And there’s ways that we can do that. The way that we can do this is that most the drugs that are purchased in this country are purchased by Medicaid and Medicare. These are government programs. So, we can tell the drug companies we’re not going to pay anymore, but we also want them to lower the price for the private market. And we have other uh tools for getting them to do that. We’re trying to get them to volunteer to do that. And uh you got to push a little further and a little stronger. Is that are you facing some sort of Well, it’s not resistance from big pharma particularly. Well, of course, but it’s not only it’s not only the pharmaceutical companies, but the other countries have kind of gotten a free ride on the United States because they’re getting the benefit of all of our research in there that they ought to be f paying their fair share. We spend about 8% of our GDP on drugs and in Europe, they spend 3%. And so what we’d like to do is see them uh bring that up to maybe 6%. And if I might even add to that, uh some estimates say US consumers pay up to 300% more on jerk prices than their European counterparts. I think that goes along the same lines that you were describing, right? uh we spent a lot more you can get um OMIC for example in this country the I think the list price is $1,300 a month and in in London you can buy the exact same drug that’s made in the same factory in New Jersey for $88 a month and so President Trump has said this is something that has been bothe bothering him a long time and that we’re not going to do it anymore. Uh in terms of the anxiety crisis both of our countries also face, the WHO has

Minsters were dispatched to tell the nation nothing had changed. Mandelson had expressed sufficient contrition and would be remaining in his post. When Donald Trump dines with the King and Prime Minister during his state banquet next week, disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein will be the ghost at the feast. The White House, the royal family and Sir Keir Starmer’s Government have all been tarnished by association with the sex offender, with the sacking of Lord Peter Mandelson the latest stage in the saga. Mr Trump continues to deny being the author of a sexually suggestive letter in Epstein’s 50th birthday book in 2003, while the Duke of York – the King’s brother – was forced away from his public role in 2019 amid the furore over his friendship with the convicted billionaire paedophile. Just days before the state visit brings Mr Trump, Sir Keir and the King together, the Prime Minister sacked his ambassador to the US after the emergence of emails showing the full extent of his relationship with Epstein. Sir Keir had insisted at Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday that “full due process” was gone through in relation to Lord Mandelson’s appointment and “I have confidence in the ambassador in the role he is doing”. But the disclosure of emails between Lord Mandelson and Epstein from 2005 to 2010 – including after his conviction for soliciting a minor for prostitution – changed Sir Keir’s thinking. The suggestion that he believed Epstein’s first conviction was wrongful and should be challenged was “new information”, the Foreign Office and No 10 said. But Lord Mandelson’s links with Epstein were widely known before Sir Keir took the unusual step of appointing a prominent political figure – rather than a career diplomat – to the Washington post. The risks of appointing a politician who is no stranger to scandal were obvious and Sir Keir is now paying a political price for the gamble. Epstein died in a New York jail cell in 2019 while facing sex trafficking charges.But six years later his shadow still hangs over the special relationship between the UK and US.

Johnson is now likely to face questions about whether the non-disclosure amounts to a breach of the ministerial code. The hour-long afternoon meeting on 28 August 2019 was marked “private” in a log of Johnson’s activities that day and was not subsequently disclosed on the government’s public log of meetings. It took place in Downing Street on the day Johnson had informed the queen he was proroguing parliament in an effort to push through his Brexit plans, triggering a huge backlash. The secrecy around Johnson’s encounter with Thiel raises serious questions about how transparent the government’s public log of meetings has been in recent years. It is unclear why officials did not disclose the meeting between the prime minister, his senior adviser and a tech mogul around the time Thiel’s company was seeking lucrative business with the UK government. Johnson did not respond to multiple requests for comment. After publication, Johnson emailed a statement to the Guardian that did not respond directly to questions about his meeting with Thiel. The statement denied that his private office misused a subsidy scheme intended to support an ex-PM’s public duties. The public duty costs allowance (PDCA) should not be used for private or commercial purposes. “This story is rubbish,” he said. “The PDCA has been used entirely in accordance with the rules. The Guardian should change its name to Pravda.” Thiel did not respond to repeated requests for comment. The existence of the meeting is revealed in an official government document contained in the Boris Files, a cache of leaked documents. The files have been seen by the Guardian after they were obtained by the transparency group Distributed Denial of Secrets. Meetings carried out in an official ministerial capacity have to be disclosed on the public government log but may be exempt if they are considered political relating to party business, or personal with a friend or family. Thiel is not a donor to the Conservative party and as an American would not be able to give money to UK politics.

Speaking to reporters at a White House press briefing Tuesday, Leavitt delivered a strange statement on behalf of the president, expressing just how sad he’d been to hear about the deadly attack. “This morning the Trump administration was notified by the United States military that Israel was attacking Hamas, which—very unfortunately—was located in a section of Doha, the capital of Qatar,” Leavitt said. While attacking Qatar “does not advance Israel or America’s goals,” eliminating Hamas was a “worthy goal,” Leavitt said. Leavitt claimed that Trump had “immediately directed” U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff to inform the Qatari government of the impending attack. “The president views Qatar as a strong ally and friend of the United States, and feels very badly about the location of this attack,” Leavitt said, adding that Trump believed that the incident could be an “opportunity for peace.” Unsurprisingly, Qatar didn’t quite see it that way. It condemned the attack as a “flagrant violation of all international laws and norms.” Leavitt also repeatedly refused to answer questions about whether Israel had warned Trump about the strike on the U.S. ally ahead of time, referring reporters back to her “lengthy and thorough” statement. Advertisement In the aftermath of Israel’s attack on Qatar Tuesday, Israeli sources told multiple outlets—including CNN and Israel’s Channel 12—that the U.S. had prior knowledge of the attack. It looks like not even a $400 million luxury jet could buy Trump’s protection, and Leavitt’s statement was just crocodile tears. This isn’t the first time the Trump administration hasn’t been forthcoming about its coordination with Israel. When Israel launched a sweeping attack on Iran in June, two Israeli officials claimed that Trump had given them the green light to do it, despite the U.S. president’s claims that he’d had nothing to do with it. The sources said that Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had lied to reporters about coordinating the attack in the days before. Later, when Trump was asked whether Israel had given him a “heads-up,” he replied: “Heads-up? It wasn’t a heads-up. It was, we know what’s going on.”

We had completely run out of formula feed in Nasser [hospital]. “Four days before she died, US doctors had brought in formula feed, knowing there was a shortage. They had those removed, deliberately, by Israeli guards. That formula feed may have saved Zaynab.” More than 64,000 people have been killed in Gaza by Israel since it launched its war on the besieged enclave in October 2023, following the Hamas attacks on southern Israel, during which an estimated 1,200 people were killed. The so-called Gaza tribunal, a two-day event which concludes on Friday, is being hosted by Jeremy Corbyn, the former Labour leader and lifelong supporter of Palestinian rights, who is launching a new left-wing party in the UK. Mark Smith, a former diplomat who resigned over the UK’s failure to stop sending arms to Israel, will address the tribunal on Friday.

British police have arrested hundreds of Palestine Action group supporters, many over 60, at a demonstration in London. The UK government banned the group under anti-terrorism legislation in July after some of its members broke into a Royal Air Force base and damaged military planes. The group, which has also targeted defence firms in Britain with links to Israel, has accused Britain’s government of complicity in what it says are Israeli war crimes in Gaza. Police arrested almost 900 Palestine Action supporters on Saturday, in a string of arrests in recent weeks under anti-terrorism legislation. Police arrest pro-Palestine protesters in London. Of those, 857 were detained for showing support for a banned group, while 17 were arrested for assaults on officers after police said the protest turned violent. Hundreds of demonstrators gathered near parliament in central London on Saturday to protest against the ban, with many holding up signs that said: “I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action.” Defend Our Juries, the campaign group organising the protest, said 1,500 people took part in the London demonstration. Within minutes, police began arresting the demonstrators, as bystanders chanted “Shame on you” and “Met Police, pick a side, justice or genocide”. There were some scuffles and angry exchanges as officers dragged away demonstrators who went limp as they were removed from the crowd.

At least 138 people have been charged so far, following weeks of protests in London and other cities, in which hundreds of people have been arrested for opposing the ban on the direct-action protest group. Statistics published by the Home Office on Thursday reveal that just 34 people were charged with offences under Section 13 of the 2000 Terrorism Act between 2001 and the end of June 2025, days before Palestine Action was added to the government’s list of designated terrorist organisations. The shocking figures appear to raise further questions about the proportionality of the ban, which has been widely condemned by human rights and civil liberties organisations. Section 13, which prohibits the display or wearing of symbols of support for proscribed organisations, has been the main power used by London’s Metropolitan Police against protesters attending demonstrations against the ban outside parliament organised by the campaign group Defend Our Juries. Many of those arrested at the protests have held signs reading: “I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action”. At the protest against the ban in London’s Parliament Square on 9 August, more than half of those arrested were over the age of 60. Those arrested have included a Roman Catholic priest, a Baptist minister and a disabled blind man. Last weekend, police said they had arrested 857 people under Section 13 for “showing support for Palestine Action”, taking the total number of arrests since the ban was introduced to more than 1,500. The Crown Prosecution Service said last week it had so far charged 138 people with Section 13 offences. It said it was working closely with police and the Attorney General’s Office to process more case files and expected to bring more charges in the coming weeks. The UK government has continued to back the policing of the ban. On Saturday, Shabana Mahmood, the new Home Secretary who replaced Yvette Cooper last week, attended the police control room monitoring the protest with Metropolitan Police chief Mark Rowley and commented on social media that it was “an honour… to see them at work policing protests”.

Young Israelis refuse draft on conscientious grounds. Israeli army refusers defy harsher backlash to protest genocide Facing longer prison terms and greater public hostility, a new cohort of conscientious objectors insist refusal is both a moral duty and an act of hope. In mid-July, a few dozen young Jewish-Israeli activists marched through the streets of Tel Aviv to protest the ongoing genocide in Gaza. The demonstration ended at Habima Square in the city center, where 10 participants who had received army draft notices set them on fire and publicly declared their refusal to enlist. The act sparked an uproar on Israeli social media, unleashing a wave of private messages — some supportive, others hostile — alongside calls of incitement from right-wing pages. “People would reach out to me every single day after we burned the notices,” said 19-year-old Yona Roseman, one of the participants, in an interview with +972. “I don’t know if this alone can bring about change, but even one fewer soldier taking part in the genocide is a positive step.” Roseman is one of seven young Israelis imprisoned in August for refusing military service in protest of Israel’s genocide and occupation. According to the conscientious objector network Mesarvot, it is the largest number jailed simultaneously since the group began operating in 2016. Their sentences range from 20 to 45 days, after which they will likely be summoned again, serving several more prison terms before being officially discharged. In total, 17 young Israelis have been jailed for publicly refusing the draft since the war started. The first was Tal Mitnick, who was imprisoned for 185 days. Another, Itamar Greenberg, was held for nearly 200 days, marking the longest sentence for a conscientious objector in over a decade. Their cases signal a hardening of the army’s stance; according to Mesarvot, the military appears to have abandoned its previous policy of releasing refusers after 120 days, making extended prison terms the new norm. While conscientious objection among drafted teens remains rare in Israeli society, Israel’s onslaught on Gaza has sparked a broader wave of refusal among reservists who have already completed their mandatory service. More than 300 have sought support from the refusal movement Yesh Gvul (Hebrew for “There is a limit”), most of them called up for service in Gaza. “What characterizes this wave [of refusal], unlike during the First Lebanon War and the [First and Second] Intifadas, is that back then there were selective refusers — those who refused to go to Lebanon or the West Bank,” explained Ishai Menuchin, chair of Yesh Gvul. “But now, these are refusers who, for the most part, are unwilling to serve in the army at all.”

These intermittent notes of sobriety make The Day Shall Come a superior film to Four Lions, Morris’s first feature – although both contain his characteristic fast-paced dialogue. Beginning from Morris’s premise that a terrorist cell is “just a bunch of blokes”, Four Lions mocked our fears of the all-powerful terrorist bogeyman by showing the failures, ideological inconsistencies and patent chaos of a group of men trying to organise a suicide bombing attack. The Day Shall Come is slicker and pacier, but the film’s great strength is its poignancy. Moses is a lovable character: his calls to pacifist forms of community, his “mission to change the lives of poor people” and his cultivation of small-scale crops resonate with mainstream ethical and moral concerns around the need for social equality and ecological change.

Wes Streeting mixes with tech billionaires at Bilderberg summit Britain’s health secretary, who wants to shake up the NHS, was tight lipped about his encounter with AI moguls at elite conference. UK health secretary Wes Streeting ignored questions from the media as he left the annual Bilderberg meeting at the Grand Hotel in Stockholm, Sweden on Sunday. Streeting, who fancies himself as a future prime minister, spent the weekend rubbing shoulders with over 120 politicians, media moguls, and corporate CEOs such as Pfizer’s Albert Bourla and Microsoft’s Satya Nadella. Tech billionaires were well represented at this year’s Bilderberg, including Palantir founders Peter Thiel and Alex Karp, whose firm’s vast data contract with the NHS is the target of campaigners. Palantir has controversially just been given the entire US population’s database to process. If knowledge is power, then that’s a lot of power. Topics on this year’s agenda of closed door talks included sessions on artificial intelligence (AI), which may well have caught Streeting’s attention. He is an enthusiastic convert to AI in the NHS, pledging to “bring our health service into the digital age” and vowing to “cut unnecessary red tape” around the implementation of new technology. The conference ended with all the delegates being ferried on a boat to a lavish banquet at a palace owned by Sweden’s fabulously wealthy Wallenberg family. Onboard the boat “Sjobris” or “Easy breeze” the champagne flowed as Streeting was seen chatting with Ryan Air’s CEO Michael O’ Leary. Photos from this cruise may not impress Streeting’s constituents of Ilford North, where last year an anti-establishment independent candidate Leanne Mohamad came within 528 votes of taking his seat. Jeremy Hunt, himself a former UK health secretary, was also onboard but preferred to hang out on the more discreet lower deck with the Bilderberg organisers and John Micklethwaite of Bloomberg. Bilderberg has remodelled itself as the golden ticket on the elite AI conference circuit offering something that no other tech summit can give: three days of locked-away access to heads of state, senior public officials and policymakers.

Despite all these public figures there on government business, no press conference was held after the talks. So I tried to grab a few words with Streeting as he waited for his Volvo to take him to the airport. I asked him if he was going to divulge who he had met with and what had been discussed, and whether he was going to declare the hospitality he had received from the Bilderberg group itself and by extension the Wallenbergs. He maintained a stony silence throughout our chat. The wall of silence met by anyone trying to cover Bilderberg is obviously concerning: the heady mixture of lobbyists, public officials, bank bosses and military leaders means that policies that affect us all are being shaped behind closed doors at a conference funded by and packed with rapacious billionaires. I reached out for comment from the UK’s department of health for a statement on Streeting’s attendance at the meeting. The response was: “The Secretary of State will be attending the meeting in Stockholm as a government representative and will engage in discussions across a range of issues.” This creates an interesting tension in the light of the rather disingenuous statement on the Bilderberg group’s website that delegates attend the talks as private individuals only. It claims: “Thanks to the private nature of the Meeting, the participants take part as individuals rather than in any official capacity, and hence are not bound by the conventions of their office or by pre-agreed positions”. Streeting is one of only a handful of Labour MPs who have been invited to Bilderberg in the last decade. Streeting’s colleague, foreign secretary David Lammy, attended Bilderberg in 2022 before entering government. Lammy later declared that his trip, costing more than £5,000, had been paid for by Newbridge Advisory, of which the sole director was former MI6 chief Sir John Sawers. Sawers, who sits on Bilderberg’s steering committee, invited the current head of MI6, Richard Moore, to this year’s summit, which also discussed geo-politics.  

When war criminal Israeli President Isaac Herzog lands in London on Thursday he is NOT to be arrested! Herzog to visit UK next week Israeli leaders have made secret trips to Britain on multiple occasions over the past year despite ongoing ICJ and ICC cases The Israeli president is set to visit London next Thursday, just days before Britain is expected to recognise Palestinian statehood at the UN general assembly later this month, according to UK media reports. Isaac Herzog is expected to meet ministers and senior political figures, the Guardian reported on Thursday, but Downing Street has not yet confirmed a meeting. The latest, unannounced, visit is likely to spark outrage among Labour backbenchers and other MPs, since the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, is wanted for alleged war crimes by the International Criminal Court. Herzog has backed Israel’s military operations in Gaza. In October 2023 he claimed that all Palestinians in Gaza were “unequivocally” responsible for the 7 October Hamas attack. “It is not true this rhetoric about civilians not aware, not involved,” he said in remarks that are widely accused of having been genocidal in nature. Herzog’s reported trip is one of many by senior Israeli officials to the UK over the last two years of the genocidal campaign in Gaza. On 25 November 2024, Israeli military chief Herzi Halevi flew to Britain on a secret trip and met Lord Richard Hermer, the attorney general. The Labour government gave Halevi special mission immunity for the trip. In mid-April, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar made a similarly clandestine trip to the UK and met the foreign secretary. That visit was just days after Israeli authorities detained and deported Abtisam Mohamed and Yuan Yang, two Labour MPs. The head of the Israeli air force, Major General Tomer Bar, also recently met senior British defence officials on a visit to the UK. Herzog’s expected visit comes amid frayed diplomatic relations between Britain and Israel. British Foreign Secretary David Lammy told parliament on Monday afternoon that the government intends to make good on its threat to recognise a Palestinian state later this month if Israel does not meet a series of conditions. These conditions, announced in late July, included that Israel agree to a ceasefire and commit not to annex any of the occupied West Bank.

Sharing the news on Substack, he said the officers ‘escorted him to a private area’ and revealed he was under arrest over three of his tweets about transgender people. One of the offensive tweets read: “If a trans-identified male is in a female-only space, he is committing a violent, abusive act. “Make a scene, call the cops, and if all else fails, punch him in the balls.” Another tweet saw him post a photo of activists gathering for a trans rights march. He wrote with it: “A photo you can smell.” Speaking of the arrest, he added: “When they began reading me my rights, the red mist descended and I came close to becoming one of those police body-cam videos where you can’t believe the perp isn’t just doing what he’s told—and they treated me gently after that. “They even arranged for a van to meet me on the tarmac so I didn’t have to be perp-walked through the airport like a terrorist. Small mercies.” After being interviewed, a nurse was sent to check on him and discovered his blood pressure was ‘over 200 – stroke territory’. Graham continued: “The stress of being arrested for jokes was literally threatening my life! So I was escorted to A&E, where I write this now after spending about eight hours under observation.” He later returned to his Substack to share an 11-minute muffled voice recording of the arrest. In the recording, a police officer could be heard saying he was ‘inciting violence’ before reading out his tweets. When an officer told him he was under arrest, Graham could be heard yelling: “I don’t f**king believe it! I’m under arrest?” After a few seconds of muffled speaking, Graham was heard repeatedly saying: “I’m going to sue you into the ground”, before adding: “How dare you?” Someone tells him to “calm down”, telling the writer: “There’s no need for it” as Graham continues yelling. There were a couple of minutes of muffled sounds before Graham mentioned how ‘furious’ he is and talked about ‘incels’. He also said: “You don’t talk to me for standing up for women’s rights.”

The appeal of the Goodies-led Bouncing Party has waned, as older folk support the Waltzers and a few voters even fancy the extremist strutting Max Walling and McKenzie Square Dancing parties. Eventually with Bouncing Party supporters finding it difficult to fill out the ballot papers while on the move, there is a landslide victory to the Standing Party, whose politicians look suspiciously like wooden dummies in pinstripe suits and bowler hats. The town crier soon reads out a parliamentary edict which bans all bouncing, funky chickening and enjoyment of any sort and makes it an offence for anyone to have fun anymore. The streets are policed by the dreaded Mirth Inspectors; hooded, black garbed, baton wielding thugs on horseback who clobber puppeteers, burst kids balloons and harass anyone who is having a good time in their bid to ‘Keep Britain Gloomy’. However there is an uprising in nearby Sherwood Forest and the Robin Hood-like Goodies ride about on their trandem and entertain people with various circus and magic acts, which leads to prohibition where the fun laws are tightened even further. The ‘unmentionables’ are not to be denied though and after they cause havoc with the St.Valentines Day custard pie massacre, they seek refuge in underground ‘joke-easys’ and gradually round up all of the banned entertainers (although they have the eminently good sense and taste to leave Tony Blackburn behind on the street!) Following a vote of no confidence, the government is toppled (as wooden dummies tumble over like dominoes) and the Entertainers Party is set to govern, except for one major hitch. Because they have spent so long in hiding, all of the old stars have forgotten how to do their acts and despite some expert reminders from Graeme’s brilliant mimicry, they are utterly useless. As an interim measure, a puppet government is set up (with Sooty as the new Prime Minister!), but his prefence for playing the xylophone on Nationwide rather than discussing political issues, followed by a rowdy nursery room-style scrap among the puppets in parliament forces the Goodies (who are watching a tv set imbedded in a tree in the woods) to venture to the country mansion Chequers to sort things out. After they avoid security (Punch and Judy atop a barn door), the Goodies storm the Cabinet room and Tim lectures the puppets for behaving badly, only to come under attack from all directions by enraged puppet politicians. The Goodies escape through a window and flee into the spacious gardens, but the pigs set off an alarm and giant Andy Pandy puppets soon lope after them.

The Reform UK leader was in Washington DC giving evidence to a US congressional committee holding a hearing into whether European laws “threaten Americans’ right to speak freely in the US”. Citing the cases of writer Graham Linehan and a woman who was jailed over a racist tweet, Farage spoke about what he called “the really awful authoritarian situation that the UK has sunk into”. During the session he was heavily criticised by some Democratic members of Congress, including Jamie Raskin who labelled him a “Putin-loving free speech impostor”. Responding to Farage’s appearance at the committee, Labour’s Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said: “Jetting off to another country and hyping up the prospect of the UK’s trade with our closest allies being hit is about as anti-British as you can get.” Earlier in the day Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer accused Farage of having “flown to America to badmouth and talk down our country” adding: “He has gone there to lobby the Americans to impose sanctions on this country that will harm working people.” In his written recommendations to Congress,, external Farage suggested the US government should use “diplomacy and trade” to defend its position on free speech against the UK. However, speaking to members of Congress, he insisted he was not calling for sanctions but instead wanted American companies and politicians to have “honest conversations” with the UK about free speech.

Authorities in the Portuguese capital are investigating what caused the Elevador da Glória — a cable car popular with tourists that dates to 1885 — to derail, hurtle down a steep hill and smash into a building around 6pm, local time (3am Thursday AEST). In addition to the fatalities, 23 people were injured in the incident. Information available online shows Carris, the publicly owned company that operates Lisbon’s funiculars, cancelled a maintenance tender for them on Monday. He said there must be an independent investigation into the “root cause” of the crash. “Especially because workers have been reporting for a long time that the maintenance of these elevators must return to the responsibility of Carris workers and not be handed over to external companies, as is the specific case of the Glória elevator,” he told the Lusa news agency. A colleague of the driver who died in Wednesday’s crash told the ABC “we need to learn” from the incident. On Thursday, Carris chief Pedro de Brito Bogas said the company was doing everything it could to assist authorities probing the crash. ‘It easily could have been me’ The Elevador da Glória carries an estimated 3 million passengers each year on a steep 275-metre journey between Restorers Square and the lively Bairro Alto district.
