Why farmers have choked central London with tanks, tractors Hundreds of farmers along with their tractors flocked to Central London to protest against the proposed 20% tax on farm inheritances. Not just tractors, a tank was also seen rolling in London’s Parliament Street. The protest in London involving tractors comes months after similar protests were seen in half-a-dozen countries in Europe. It was not just the hundreds of tractors in the protest that caught attention, but a tank decked up with the Union Jack, too, took to the streets in protest of the new inheritance tax plan. The plan introduced by the Labour government-led by PM Kier Starmer-seeks to impose an inheritance tax of 20% on farms worth over one million pounds. Such a march in the UK comes almost a year after farmers rode on their tractors and staged tractor protests across countries in Europe, including France, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Italy, and Poland. On Monday, tractors rolled through London with hundreds of farmers marching in protest over the proposed changes to inheritance tax by the Labour government. The new policy would include an inheritance tax of 20% on farms worth over 1 million pounds, which has outraged the farming community. The proposed tax, according to the BBC, would come into effect from April 2026. The march in London, organised by the Save British Farming movement, was the third large-scale demonstration since Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced the policy last year, according to the UK-based Independent. Farmers have claimed that the increase in tax could wipe out family farms, which are extremely low in profit. It is feared by many farmers that the policy will divide farms that are passed down the generations, with families being forced to sell land in order to pay for the tax. Protesters lined up in Central London’s Whitehall with tractors, which stretched back to Trafalgar Square. Union Jack flags flapped, and banners were raised, calling for the government to reconsider the policy. Liz Webster, one of the organisers of the protest, warned that the government’s stance could lead to a “food crisis” by making it more difficult for individuals to invest in agriculture. In an interview with The Independent, she stated, “The government is marching into a food crisis.”

Questions raised over Rachel Reeves’s CV and expenses She stood in a by-election on 29 June 2006 but had taken up a role at HBOS in March that year and received a relocation package to move from London. It is understood she rented a flat in Leeds and kept a flat in London at this time. The chancellor’s online CV gives incorrect dates for her time at HBOS as well, which her team also acknowledged. It states that she left in December 2009, five months before she was elected to parliament in May 2010. In fact, we have established, her employment at HBOS finished in mid-May 2009, when she signed a compromise agreement. An invoice for legal advice on the agreement stated that it arose “from a decision by your employer to terminate your employment”. The bank was undergoing restructuring at the time of Reeves’s departure and a spokesman for the chancellor said she had taken voluntary redundancy. A compromise agreement, now known as a settlement agreement, is a legal document between an employer and employee which HBOS used when senior managers were made redundant. Reeves was allowed to continue using a company car for six months, according to her spokesman. She then spent a year campaigning ahead of the May 2010 general election without seeking further employment. The MP for Leeds West and Pudsey has previously faced accusations that she has embellished her online CV. Her LinkedIn profile was changed last year to describe her role at HBOS as “Retail Banking”. It had previously claimed she worked as an economist at the bank but she instead held a management role in the bank’s Customer Relations department, which dealt with complaints. In November, several MPs raised the row in the House of Commons while putting questions to Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner. The prime minister’s spokeswoman also faced questions at that time, with journalists asking if Sir Keir expected members of his Cabinet to tell the truth on their CV. The spokeswoman said the row related to “the chancellor’s time before she was the chancellor”. “The prime minister is very clear that what is most important is having a chancellor who is able to balance the books and who is able to be straight with the public and restore the public finances,” she added.

The 1976 Uk Intelligence coup against PM Harold Wilson with links to South African white supremacists – The Pencourt File book and 2006 BBC documentary. The British, too, have met their Watergate, or so it seems after reading this fast-paced descent into the swamp of political corruption by two freelance reporters, formerly attached to the BBC. On May 12, 1976, nearly two months after his resignation as Prime Minister, Harold Wilson summoned Penrose and Courtiour to his office and effectively offered to become their “”Deep Throat”” in the matter of South African involvement in British affairs and subversion in the famed MI5 department. (Wilson was a bit more theatrical than this: “”I see myself as the big fat spider in the corner of the room. Sometimes I speak when I’m asleep. You should both listen.””) The actual extent of South African interference is never discovered, but our intrepid news hounds, acting upon a Wilson tip, uncover a completely different can of worms, the alleged homosexual affair between a sleazy nonentity, Norman Scott, and the leader of the Liberal Party, Jeremy Thorpe, a case assiduously covered up by Thorpe’s friends in government. Their investigation of the Scott-Thorpe scandal loses the authors their jobs with the BBC, but they continue their efforts independently and soon Scott and his blackmail schemes become the centerpiece of the book. Hardly a corner of British society remains pure of implication in this sordid affair. Their interviews and travels also lead the authors to uncover a murder conspiracy against Scott, as well as an implausible plan for a military coup against Wilson’s Labour government. The BBC, their former employer, comes off rather poorly, as a place where the truth is easily sacrificed at the first hint of scandal. Although the story is not over yet and all the threads have not been followed to their ends, British democracy has been put on its guard, it is hoped, from its enemies both inside and outside the establishment. – An extraordinary tale of two journalists summoned by ex-prime minister Harold Wilson to investigate connections with South African intelligence agency BOSS and smear campaigns against Wilson and colleagues. As they start their investigations, they quickly end up in the mire of the Norman Scott/Jeremy Thorpe relationship. It’s a fascinating and easy read.
George Galloway on the arrest of Richard Medhurst, journalist, for allegedly being pro Hamas. British independent journalist Richard Medhurst raided and detained by Austrian authorities British independent journalist Richard Medhurst, who has reported critically on Israel’s genocide in Gaza, was detained on Monday in Austria. This followed police and intelligence agents raiding his home, ransacking it and confiscating many of his possessions, including all his journalistic tools. The state agents showed Medhurst a warrant that also required him to face an interrogation. Medhurst was then detained for six to seven hours, fingerprinted, had his DNA taken and photographed for mug shots. Medhurst was only able finally to release information via social media about the raid and his detention on Thursday due to his equipment being taken away. Medhurst is also one of a growing number of independent journalists who have been raided and detained by the British state over the past year, utilising draconian anti-terrorism legislation for exposing US, British and Israeli war crimes in Gaza and across the Middle East. Medhurst was arrested at London’s Heathrow Airport on August 15 last year as he disembarked from his plane, under Section 12 of the Terrorism Act (2000). He was held for almost 24 hours, questioned, and had all his electronic devices and journalistic equipment confiscated. His latest arrest comes as the far-right Austrian Freedom Party (FPÖ) and the conservative People’s Party (ÖVP), currently negotiating a coalition government in the Alpine state, plan massive attacks on the working class and on migrants.

The service aggressively maintained its position until I produced evidence proving it was untrue, including a recording of one of the calls. The BBC can reveal: MI5 first lied in a court case where the government attempted to block the BBC from reporting on agent X’s wrongdoing – and succeeded in banning us from naming the foreign national The Security Service then repeated the lie to a specialist court, where the woman attacked with a machete – known by the alias Beth – is seeking answers about MI5’s handling of its agent It repeated the lie again to a judicial review, where Beth was challenging the specialist court’s decision A senior officer said he was legally authorised to tell me X was an agent – so MI5 had not stuck to its policy of not confirming or denying agents’ identities The director general of MI5 phoned the BBC’s director general to cast doubt on the corporation’s original story about agent X, wrongly calling it “inaccurate” In an unprecedented admission, MI5 has now issued an “unreserved apology” to the BBC and all three courts, describing what happened as a “serious error” and saying “MI5 takes full responsibility”. Judge-led inquiry into Nottingham attacks announced Families of those who died at the hands of Valdo Calocane have been pushing for a statutory inquiry A judge-led public inquiry into the Nottingham attacks will take place “within weeks”, it has been announced. The families of Barnaby Webber, Grace O’Malley-Kumar, both 19, and Ian Coates, 65, who were stabbed to death by Valdo Calocane in Nottingham in June 2023, tearfully applauded the news during a meeting at No 10 Downing Street on Wednesday. The families had called for a statutory inquiry in order for witnesses to be compelled to give evidence, which Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said was important so witnesses could “answer questions about their actions and their decisions”. The relatives of those who died said it was “a great day” and a “watershed moment”. The case, which resulted in Calocane being sentenced to a hospital order in January 2024, had previously seen a number of reviews, including a major investigation into the mental healthcare and treatment he received. Sir Keir told the families of those killed and injured in the attacks an inquiry will take place in “a matter of weeks”. During Wednesday’s meeting, the families were told by the PM a “number of different agencies” would be scrutinised. The prime minister acknowledged it had “taken a long time” to reach a decision on announcing an inquiry, as he was sitting around the table alongside high-profile ministers such as the health secretary, home secretary and attorney general. A retired judge is due to be appointed in due course, and Sir Keir added: “As soon as that happens, the process will start.” Calocane killed Mr Webber, Ms O’Malley-Kumar and Mr Coates, before using Mr Coates’s van to drive into three pedestrians – Wayne Birkett, Marcin Gawronski and Sharon Miller – in the city centre. He pleaded guilty to three counts of manslaughter on the basis of diminished responsibility and three counts of attempted murder after being diagnosed with who has paranoid schizophrenia prior to the killings. Following Calocane’s sentencing, the families were highly critical of the police and Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). A subsequent review into the CPS found while prosecutors had been right to accept Calocane’s pleas of manslaughter on the basis of diminished responsibility, they could have handled the case better. And in May, a judge ruled that Calocane’s sentence was not unduly lenient. A few months later, in August, a review published by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) found “a series of errors, omissions and misjudgements” by mental health services. This month, an independent review into the NHS treatment given to Calocane prior to the killings detailed “a catalogue of failings”.

The 24-year-old, who injured at least 28 people — some of them critically — when he plowed his white mini into the crowd, was already known to the police and was detained at the scene. Authorities have not yet determined his motive, but the case is being investigated by Bavaria’s counterterrorism unit. Friedrich Merz, the likely next chancellor from the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU), posted on X: “We will consistently enforce law and order. Everyone must feel safe in our country again. Something has to change in Germany.” Bavarian Premier Markus Söder, from the Christian Social Union, a sister party to the CDU, described the incident as a likely “terrorist attack” and called for tougher measures, warning that Germany “cannot keep moving from one attack to another without action.” The incident in Munich follows a series of attacks by foreign citizens residing in Germany. In January, a 28-year-old Afghan man attacked a school group, killing a two-year-old child and a man in the southern city of Aschaffenburg. In December, a Saudi Arabian citizen drove a truck into a Christmas market in the eastern city of Magdeburg, killing five and injuring 200. The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) quickly blamed lax migration policies, pointing to the suspect’s nationality. The party’s leader, Alice Weidel, posted on X: “Is this supposed to go on forever? Migration turnaround now!” Seeking not to be outflanked, Chancellor Olaf Scholz from the Social Democratic Party said at a campaign event in Fürth in northern Bavaria: “He cannot hope for any kind of leniency … He must be punished, and he must leave the country.” The AfD official account on X accused the government of failing to deport dangerous asylum seekers, referencing the Aschaffenburg stabbings. Economy Minister Robert Habeck, the chancellor candidate from the Greens, struck a different tone, expressing shock at the attack but urging restraint until a full investigation is completed.

Tens of Bristol babies being removed from their parents More than 80 babies came into care within a week of being born More than 200 babies in Bristol were removed from their parents before the age of six months in the past five years. A total of 81 Bristol babies came into care within a week of being born between 2019 and 2023, with a further 142 being removed from their birth parents before turning six months old. Information released to Bristol Live after a Freedom of Information request also shows a decreasing number of children are being adopted in the city, with the number of Special Guardianship Orders (SGOs) increasing. As explained by Cafcass, a SGO is unlike adoption, in that it is not lifelong and ends when the child turns 18. SGO also do not legally end the child’s relationship with their birth family and the person looking after the child is usually someone already known by the child such as another relative or a foster carer. In 2019, 20 children were adopted and 36 were placed under SGOs. However, the number of adoptions has since gradually reduced to nine in 2023 while the number of SGOs has ranged from a peak of 40 in 2021 and a low of 22 in 2023. In terms of adoptions, the Bristol City Council figures show children under the age of three were the most likely to be adopted, with 14 adoptions of such age happening both in 2019 and 2020. This compares to six adoptions of children aged 3 to 10 in 2019 and 2020. No teenagers were adopted in Bristol between 2019 and 2023. The council also released figures on the number of children currently in foster placements in the city. This has remained fairly static since 2019, ranging from 680 to 713. The number of repeat removals has also stayed consistent in that time, staying between 26 and 36 each year. According to Foster Care UK, there are many reasons why social services would need to intervene and place a child or children into care, such as neglect, parent illness, physical or emotional abuse, abandonment or parent incarceration.

SENSITIVE: Johnny Vedmore Responds to Whitney Webb – As you probably know, Whitney Webb, a household name in dissident journalism, whose work I have followed with reverence and shared generously with friends all throughout COVID, accused Johnny Vedmore, another gifted investigative journalist known especially for his work on Klaus Schwab’s ancestry and the CIA, of having been abusive in their personal relationship. Out of respect for both of them, I am not going to comment on the plot. I stepped forward to offer a platform to Johnny to present his side, for two reasons: One, I hate to see friends in distress. Having been through severe and very cruel abuse earlier in life and having paid a very high price for not defending myself at the time, I take this subject seriously, and I don’t believe it would be easy for a narcissist to befriend me at this point in my life. Two, the situation is very sad and yields itself very readily to exploitation and juicy takes. There is no lack of people who don’t like Johnny, or don’t like Whitney, or just like clickbait, and who would be thrilled to use this situation to make us all dumber or more militant, to divide us into Team Whitney and Team Johnny, and to make us fight another religious war with each other (while the people with a lot of money are restructuring our world). I rather detest this trend, so I stepped forward, albeit reluctantly so.

Trump says ‘let all hell break out’ if all Israeli hostages are not freed by weekend Trump’s threat comes after Hamas said it was pausing the planned release of several hostages President Donald Trump threatened Hamas after the militant group paused plans to release more of the Israeli hostages it holds this weekend, telling reporters that “all hell is going to break out” if all of the Israeli hostages held by the group aren’t freed. “As far as I’m concerned, if all of the hostages aren’t returned by Saturday at 12 o’clock – I think it’s an appropriate time – I would say, cancel it and all bets are off and let hell break out,” he said. “I’d say they ought to be returned by 12 o’clock on Saturday. And if they’re not returned – all of them, not in drips and drabs, not two and one and three and four and two – by Saturday at 12 o’clock. And after that, I would say, all hell is going to break out,” Trump added. Trump made the declaration as he addressed reporters during a marathon signing session in the Oval Office on Monday. He also said the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas should be tossed out if the militant group doesn’t live up to its obligation to release hostages under phase one of the agreement, but he also said it’s up to Israel whether to throw the agreement out. “Saturday at 12, we want them all back. I’m speaking for myself. Israel can override it, but from myself, Saturday at 12 o’clock, and if they’re not, they’re not here, all hell is going to break out,” he said. Asked what he meant by “all hell will break out,” he replied: “You’ll find out, and they’ll find out to. Hamas will find out what I mean.” He also said “we’ll see what happens” when pressed further on whether he’d send U.S. troops to fight Hamas if the Saturday deadline wasn’t met. The president’s threats to Hamas were prompted by him being asked to weigh in on the condition of some of the hostages who were released by the militant group over the weekend. He said the gaunt condition of several of the male hostages — which some observers have likened to that of Holocaust survivors — was “a terrible look” and suggested that Hamas had pushed to delay the release of the next round of hostages because their conditions were so shocking. “I looked at the hostages that came in, and they’re emaciated. It looked like something out of the 1930s. It’s an absolute disgrace … I think they saw the way the world viewed it, and they’re looking for a reason not to send more” because “they looked [like] the Holocaust. And what a sad thing,” he said.

Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu backed Mr Trump’s threat, saying Israel will resume “intense” fighting in Gaza if all hostages were not freed at the weekend. “There is nothing left in Gaza but sand. Does he want to come and take the sand? The whole of Gaza is already hell; there is nothing else,” said Ali Salama, 72, from Beit Lahia, the most destroyed part of Gaza.
Malaysia march: “Go to Hell Donald Trump!” February 14, 2025 Dozens of people chanted “Go to hell Donald Trump!” outside the US embassy in Malaysia’s capital Kuala Lumpur, as pro-Palestinian protesters gathered to publicly reject the “lunatic ideas” of the US president to displace more than two million people from Gaza, Al Jazeera reported. Organized by 18 civil society groups after Friday prayer, the protest in Kuala Lumpur was the second of its kind for the day, with the first being held in the morning outside the embassy. Both times, demonstrators had a written memorandum addressed to Trump containing a total of seven demands regarding Gaza and its Palestinian population, copies of which the embassy refused to accept. “It is very disappointing as a country with the superpower status, they closed the whole embassy, refused to even receive our memorandum. This is really an act of cowardice,” said Chua Tian Chang, a representative of the Malaysian groups advocating for Palestinian rights. According to the memorandum, the groups called on Trump to ensure the ceasefire in Gaza, protection of Palestinian sovereignty, an end to Israel’s siege of the territory, rejection of plans for the US to “take over” Gaza, as well as accountability for war crimes perpetrated in Gaza and sanctions on those committing crimes against humanity.

In practice, it was a day that saw the Trump administration upend the alliance’s approach to this almost 3-year-old war, lay out a vision that seemed to deliver some of Moscow’s key demands, and leave NATO allies fighting to avoid the appearance of disunity. There were, of course, clear signs this was not going to be smooth sailing. US President Donald Trump fired the starting gun on this critical week of diplomacy by pouring cold water on Ukraine’s hopes of a favorable peace deal. “They may be Russian someday, or they may not be Russian someday,” he said on Fox News on Monday. European leaders have since been tight-lipped about Trump’s comments. “There are different comments now coming out,” said Latvia’s Defense Minister Andris Spruds on Wednesday, “it is important to see a very clear specific plan.” Meanwhile, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte sidestepped the issue when questioned by CNN at his pre-summit briefing, simply noting, “We are intensely coordinating with President Trump’s team at all levels, and these are very good conversations.” U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth meets with British Defence Secretary John Healey, on the eve of a NATO defence ministers’ meeting at the alliance’s headquarters in Brussels, Belgium February 12, 2025. Overnight it has lurched the NATO alliance from a stated policy that Ukraine was on an “irreversible path” to membership, to Hegseth’s blunt statement: “The United States does not believe that NATO membership for Ukraine is a realistic outcome of a negotiated settlement.” Several of his European counterparts tried to argue the two positions were not incompatible. “We as a NATO alliance, to which (Hegseth) also gave the firmest possible continuing commitment, have always been clear that Ukraine’s rightful place is in NATO,” said UK Defense Secretary John Healey. “That is a process that will take some time.” He deflected CNN’s question on whether Hegseth’s comment risks the appearance of capitulating to Moscow.

Shifting toward denuclearization would mark a stark shift in traditional Republican foreign policy. His comments come after several conflicts across the globe, including the war between Russia and Ukraine, have stirred nuclear concerns in the past few years. Trump said during his press conference he would like to lead changes in military spending and denuclearization with China and Russia, longtime U.S. adversaries. He said that once “things settle down,” he plans to meet with China and Russia to discuss how all three countries can reduce their military spending, adding that there is “no reason” for the U.S. to be spending nearly a trillion dollars on the military. Donald Trump nuclear announcement Nuclear de-escalation would also be a priority for him during those discussions, he said “President Putin and I agreed that we were going to do it in a very big way. There’s no reason for us to be building brand-new nuclear weapons. We already have so many, you could destroy the world 50 times over, 100 times over. And here we are building new nuclear weapons. And they’re building new nuclear weapons. And China’s trying to catch up,” he said. Those conversations would only happen when things “calm down a little bit,” Trump noted. He said he wanted to achieve denuclearization during his first term, but that “never took place” after the 2020 presidential race. Just days earlier, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un vowed to expand his country’s nuclear arsenal, currently comprised of roughly 50 nuclear warheads. According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, Russia has the most nuclear weapons of any country at 5,580, followed by the U.S. at 5,044. At 500, China places third.

What we know about Russia’s Oreshnik missile Media reports say the Oreshnik could be a scaled-down version of the Yars-M ICBM On Thursday, the Ukrainian city of Dnipro was hit by a Russian air strike which eyewitnesses described as unusual, triggering explosions that went on for three hours. The attack included a strike by a missile so powerful that in the aftermath Ukrainian officials said it bore the characteristics of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). Western officials were quick to deny this, saying that such a strike would have triggered a nuclear alert in the US. Hours after the strike, Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a TV address, said that Russia had launched a “new conventional intermediate-range” missile with the codename Oreshnik, meaning hazel tree in Russian. Putin said that the weapon travelled at a speed of Mach 10, or 2.5-3km per second (10 times the speed of sound), adding that “there are currently no ways of counteracting this weapon”. He said that a major military-industrial site in Dnipro, used to manufacture missiles and other armaments, had been hit. He described the attack as a test which was “successful” because the “target was reached”. Speaking a day later to senior defence officials, he said tests of the missile would continue, “including in combat conditions”. Putin’s description of the weapon notwithstanding, there seems to be no clear consensus about what it actually is. Ukrainian military intelligence maintains that the missile is a new type of ICBM known as Kedr (cedar). They say it was travelling at Mach 11 and took 15 minutes to arrive from the launch site, more than 1,000km (620 miles) away in the Astrakhan region of Russia. They said the missile was equipped with six warheads, each with six sub-munitions. This assumption is backed up by BBC Verify’s examination of video footage of the strike. Most of it is blurry or of poor quality, but it clearly shows six flashes against the night sky, each comprised of a cluster of six individual projectiles.
National Endowment for Democracy to be cancelled by Trump as well as USAID. Trump freezes all National Endowment for Democracy funding – media The US president’s spending cut reportedly leaves the organization unable to pay staff and grantees US President Donald Trump’s administration has frozen all funding to the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), several media outlets reported on Wednesday. The move is said to have caused a “bloodbath” within the organization, leaving it unable to pay staff or fulfill financial commitments. The NED, established in 1983, is officially a nonprofit organization that provides grants to support democratic initiatives worldwide. However, over the years, it has faced allegations of covertly influencing political outcomes, with critics arguing that it has taken over covert functions previously handled by the CIA, particularly those aimed at overthrowing foreign governments. Earlier this month, Elon Musk, who heads Trump’s new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and has been in charge of finding ways to cut federal spending, singled out NED, calling it a “scam” and an “evil organization” that needs to be dissolved. Since then, the organization has reportedly been “under siege” from Musk’s DOGE, according to Free Press. “It’s been a bloodbath,” one NED worker told the outlet, explaining that the organization has been unable to meet payroll and pay basic overhead expenses. The NED has faced longstanding criticism over its role in supporting political movements to undermine sovereign governments. The Center for Renewing America, a think tank founded by Russell Vought, Trump’s director of the Office of Management and Budget, released a policy paper on February 7, accusing the NED of acting as the “tip of the proverbial spear for heightened CIA and State Department efforts to foster political revolution in Ukraine.” The report claimed that the NED had funneled tens of millions of dollars to a myriad of Ukrainian political entities and anti-Russian interests and “advanced both the ‘Orange Revolution’ and ‘Maidan Revolution’ that paved the way for the current Ukraine-Russia war.” The NED has also faced accusations of sponsoring “color revolutions” in Georgia and Kyrgyzstan and of funding opposition groups in Belarus, Serbia, and Egypt. “The reasons for defunding NED are as numerous as they are imperative,” Vought’s think tank wrote, listing things like “Ukraine warmongering” and “Middle East meddling” as the most clear and pressing rationales for dismantling the agency.

EU plans to ‘mobilize’ €200B to invest in AI to catch up with US and China Captain’s Log, Stardate 3529.7 – oh yeah, Commish also withdrawing law that would help folks sue over AI harms European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says the EU will top up a continental AI push to hit €200 billion ($207 billion). The funding comes as Europe looks over its shoulder nervously at the US’s $500 billion Stargate Project and new Chinese AI contender DeepSeek. The €150 billion ($155 billion) in the European AI Champions initiative pot so far was placed there by backers led by venture capitalist General Catalyst, and includes Dutch photolithography giant ASML, France’s Airbus, Germany’s Siemens, Infineon, Philips, Volkswagen and more. The EU budget will, among other things, serve to “derisk” the investment of the private firms. The new funding was announced at the AI Action Summit in Paris, France. The EU’s €200 billion is smaller than the amount of funding announced for America’s Stargate project, which aims to build advanced AI infrastructure with an eventual $500 billion price tag. OpenAI’s Stargate was billed by US pres Donald Trump as “the largest AI infrastructure project by far in history,” though following this his right hand man and would-be OpenAI owner Elon Musk claimed “They don’t actually have the money.” The project is backed by SoftBank, OpenAI, Oracle, and MGX. Von der Leyen said the EU’s InvestAI fund would finance four future AI gigafactories across the region, specialized in training “the most complex, very large, AI models.” She said the bloc wants AI “to be a force for good and for growth. We are doing this through our own European approach – based on openness, cooperation and excellent talent.” The Commission had already announced an initial seven AI factories in December and said it would “soon announce the next five.” The Commish said the bloc’s “approach still needs to be supercharged,” claiming the move would “mobilize unprecedented capital…” in a “unique” public-private partnership she characterized as a “CERN for AI.” Von der Leyen, a second term commission president and famously a backer of Europe’s data privacy game changer the General Data Protection Regulation (GPDR), as well as Big Tech antitrust law the Digital Services Act, was also keen to let the world know the EU would be reducing bureaucratic red tape. Like it or not, AI technology is perceived as business-critical, and this is not lost on the politicos. The Commission yesterday decided to withdraw its long-stalled ePrivacy Regulation and the Artificial Intelligence Liability Directive (AILD), long feared by the tech sector as it would have made it much easier for people to sue companies over damages caused by AI tech. The Register understands an impact assessment of the directive is partly behind the decision.
Elon Musk’s grandfather, chiropractor and Technocracy Inc. head, Joshua Haldeman was a Canadian Nazi who emigrated to South Africa believing, from there, whites ‘might rule the world‘. Similarly, in an article for the Atlantic, titled, “Elon Musk’s Anti-Semitic, Apartheid-Loving Grandfather,” Joshua Benton, journalist and founder of Nieman Journalism Lab at Harvard University, described Haldeman as a radical conspiracy theorist with racist, antisemitic, and antidemocratic views. Benton also uncovered excerpts from Haldeman’s self-published 1960 book, where he wrote about his belief that South Africa could become the “leader of White Christian Civilization,” portraying the country as a bulwark against “anti-Christian, anti-White forces.” Elon Musk embracing South African heritage to ‘fulfill destiny’, proud dad says As tech mogul Elon Musk prepares to step into a new political role in the next Trump adminsitration, his dad Errol seemed proud about his son’s transition from left-wing to right-wing politics Elon Musk once branded his dad Errol “pure evil” “When you come from South Africa, Lefties think you’re a Nazi. To succeed, you need to be accepted by them so my sons, [Elon and younger brother Kimbal, a hugely successful restaurateur], started to become these flaming liberals – turning away from South Africa and their roots, which included me. Finally, Elon was embracing his heritage and his destiny.” In a separate interview, Errol explained how right-wing poltics were at the core of his family’s history. Elon’s maternal grandparents relocated from Canada to South Africa in the early 1900s as they knew the Afrikaner government was a stronghold of support for Nazism outside of Germany. “They used to support Hitler and all that sort of stuff. But they didn’t know, I don’t think they knew what the Nazis were doing. But they [the grandparents] were in the German Nazi party but in Canada. And they sympathise with the Germans. ” With Errol being a father-of-seven, the Musk family tree is particulary complicated – with the billionaire hoping that a property purchase might help him manage his own family more efficiently. And it’s certainly not a set-up that would suit all blended families. The New York Times reports that Musk has told those close to him that he wants his kids and two of their mothers to live in adjoining properties behind a six-bedroom mansion he helped purchase, as per two sources and public records. The total cost of both properties is said to be around $35 million (£27.5 million). Insiders told the publication that these new properties are conveniently located around a 10-minute walk from a third mansion Musk tends to stay in when in Austin. People magazine reports that Musk welcomed six children with his first wife, the Canadian novelist Justine Wilson, whom he married between 2000 and 2008. Tragically, the former couple lost their first child, a son named Nevada Alexander, in 2002, after he passed away from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) when he was just 10 weeks old. Opening up about her grief in a piece penned for Marie Claire, Justine wrote: “I buried my feelings … coping with Nevada’s death by making my first visit to an IVF clinic less than two months later. Elon and I planned to get pregnant again as swiftly as possible. Within the next five years, I gave birth to twins, then triplets.”…
Roger McNamee, C4 News, on AI not being as great as everyone makes out. Silicon Valley investor: ‘AI is a massive challenge to democracy’ We spoke to longtime Silicon Valley investor and Mark Zuckerberg’s mentor in the early days of Facebook, Roger McNamee, who’s now turned his attention to stopping social media from destroying democracy. Ciaran Jenkins: Roger, you’ve got this global summit in Paris, and at the end of it, the UK and the US say, ‘no, we’re not signing that’. What is going on? Roger McNamee: Fundamentally, I think that AI represents a massive challenge to democracy on a global basis. The essential problem with it is the technology has been around for about 50 years, and every few years they promise ‘this time we’re going to be able to make a machine that thinks like a human. Just give us more money, more processing power, more data’. And every time they do, we get the same outcome, which is a really crummy set of products that cause more harm than good. You’ve seen predictive policing. You’ve seen the way it’s used for mortgage approvals and job approvals. Basically, AI is a black box that nobody can criticise and nobody can challenge. And what’s going on in the United States right now is that Elon Musk and his people are trying to put AI in place of civil servants in every part of the government that matters. And their goal, very simply put, I think, is to replace democracy with technology that they control. And that is an incredibly scary thing. Ciaran Jenkins: And quite a big claim. There are plenty of people, obviously, who say that AI does some marvellous things, particularly in the world of health care and so on. But there’s a reason, aren’t there, that all these countries are trying to get ascendancy in this world? So just trying to figure out why you think the UK and the US have gone out on a limb in this way, not signing up to this agreement? Roger McNamee: I can’t speak for the UK, but the United States, it’s very simple. The largest technology companies in the United States made an assertion that there was only one way to build the next generation of AI and that would require roughly $1 trillion worth of investment, which would require us to change the way electric power is created in the United States, to use up huge amounts of fresh water to steal every copyright that exists, and to invade people’s personal privacy in exchange for which we would get this miraculous change. We spent about a quarter of that money already, and the results are, I think the best thing you could say, very disappointing. Listen, I absolutely believe that AI has valuable use cases. The problem is it’s not a technology that’s ready for the prime time it’s being put into. And if you put it in place today, I think the fundamental thing that’s going to happen in the US, and maybe in the UK, is that you’re going to see the government used as the candy jar, to pay all the costs for this technology that’s not producing results that are nearly as good as were promised a few years ago….
History Channel documentary about the German submarine U-234 chugging across the Atlantic in May 1945 which it is now believed had an enriched uranium cargo. Submarines – Hitler’s Last U-boat U-234 German submarine U-234 was a Type XB U-boat of Nazi Germany’s Kriegsmarine during World War II. Her first and only mission into enemy or contested territory consisted of the attempted delivery of uranium oxide and German advanced weapons technology to the Empire of Japan. After receiving Admiral Dönitz’ order to surface and surrender and of Germany’s unconditional surrender, the submarine’s crew surrendered to the United States on 14 May 1945. U-234 sailed from Kiel for Kristiansand in Norway on the evening of 25 March 1945, accompanied by escort vessels and three Type XXIII coastal U-boats, arriving in Horten Naval Base two days later. The submersible spent the next eight days carrying out trials on her snorkel, during which she accidentally collided with a Type VIIC U-boat performing similar trials. Damage to both submarines was minor, and despite a diving and fuel oil tank being holed, U-234 was able to complete her trials. She then proceeded to Kristiansand, arriving on about 5 April, where she underwent repairs and topped up her provisions and fuel. U-234 departed Kristiansand for Japan on 15 April 1945, running submerged at snorkel depth for the first 16 days, and surfacing after that only because her commander Kapitänleutnant Johann-Heinrich Fehler, considered he was safe from attack on the surface in the prevailing severe storm. From then on, she spent two hours running on the surface by night, and the remainder of the time submerged. The voyage proceeded without incident; the first sign that world affairs were overtaking the voyage was when the Kriegsmarine’s Goliath transmitter stopped transmitting, followed shortly after by the Nauen station. Fehler did not know it, but Germany’s naval HQ had fallen into Allied hands. Then, on 4 May, U-234 received a fragment of a broadcast from British and American radio stations announcing that Admiral Karl Dönitz had become Germany’s head of state following the death of Adolf Hitler. U-234 surfaced on 10 May in the interests of better radio reception and received Dönitz’s last order to the submarine force, ordering all U-boats to surface, hoist black flags and surrender to Allied forces. Fehler suspected a trick and managed to contact another U-boat (U-873), whose captain convinced him that the message was authentic. At this point, Fehler was practically equidistant from British, Canadian and American ports. He decided not to continue his journey, and instead headed for the east coast of the United States. Fehler thought it likely that if they surrendered to Canadian or British forces, they would be imprisoned and it could be years before they were returned to Germany; he believed that the US, on the other hand, would probably just send them home. Fehler consequently decided that he would surrender to US forces, but radioed on 12 May that he intended to sail to Halifax, Nova Scotia to surrender to ensure Canadian units would not reach him first. U-234 then set course for Newport News, Virginia; during the passage Fehler took care to dispose of his Tunis radar detector, the new Kurier radio communication system, and all Enigma related documents and other classified papers. On learning that the U-boat was to surrender, the two Japanese passengers committed suicide by taking an overdose of Luminal (a barbiturate sedative and antiepileptic drug). They were buried at sea.
Evidence Nazis conducted a successful atom-bomb test near Hamburg in October 1944 1: Four-part [VIDEO] Presentation by Dr Todd H. Rider, author of ‘Forgotten Creators, how German-speaking scientists and engineers invented the modern world, and what we can learn from them’ (2024). Dr Todd H. Rider’s book explains the Nazis had already designed a viable nuclear bomb (though didn’t have the enriched Uranium or Plutonium to make it) in 1934, FIVE YEARS before WWII began. Nazi nukes on submarine U234 . 8.8.10 (p.1594) – October 1944 Test Explosion on the Baltic Coast – A number of sources reported a test explosion on the Baltic coast in October 1944 (Section D.10). A May 1944 U.S. Army Air Forces intelligence document listed numerous research and development sites in Germany. It correctly identified the rocket and jet propulsion work being conducted at Peenemünde and the experiments being conducted at many other highly classified locations, but noted that the “most secret research” was conducted on Rügen and Usedom islands—research even more secret than the rockets and jets (p. 4393). In August 1944, a German prisoner of war reported that “experiments are conducted on an estate in Pomerania and it is alleged that this explosive is capable of destroying everything in a radius of several kilometers” (p. 4396). On 20 October 1944, the U.S. physicist and intelligence analyst Philip Morrison mentioned “recent reports of Baltic explosions” that were being investigated by the Manhattan Project as possible tests of a German atomic bomb (p. 4398). A 21 October 1944 OSS intelligence report described the October test: “The Germans have com- pleted a weapon which is founded on the principle of the disintegration of matter (Atomzertruem- merung). Experiments have been performed which have proved conclusive[…] The radius of action is supposed to be about three kilometers” (pp. 4400–4403). A 19 January 1945 U.S. military intelligence summary covering many areas of advanced German research included a subject heading for “ATOMIC BOMB,” under which it mentioned “close surveil- lance of the area in which tests are alleged to have taken place” (p. 4404). The report focused largely on the most recent work being conducted on the Baltic coast, suggesting that the tests occurred in late 1944 on the Baltic coast. In May 1945, German prisoner of war Friedrich Olmes said there had been “experiments with the atom-splitting bomb” and “practical experiments were conducted on the Baltic coast” (p. 4406). A 19 August 1945 U.S. Army Air Forces intelligence report entitled “Investigations, Research, Developments, and Practical Use of the German Atomic Bomb” presented testimony by Rudolf Zinsser, a German pilot captured by U.S. forces, that in October 1944 he flew near the massive explosion of a new German bomb on or near the Baltic coast, describing in detail a very large mushroom cloud and severe electrical disturbances (p. 4408). After further investigation, rather than dismissing Zinsser’s report, the United States decided to upgrade it from Secret to Top Secret in October 1945 (p. 4422). In testimony in 1955, 1984, and 2005, Italian military correspondent Luigi Romersa stated that by a special arrangement between Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler, on 12 October 1944 he witnessed the massive explosion of a new German bomb on the Baltic coast (apparently Rügen island), had to wait in a bunker for many hours afterward for the site to become less dangerous (short radioactive half-lives?), and then had to wear a special protective suit when inspecting the leveled test site afterward (pp. 4427–4434). Werner Grothmann stated in 2000–2002 interviews that there was a successful atomic bomb test in October 1944 (p. 4436). In a 13 March 2005 television interview, Elisabeth Mestlin stated that she observed a massive explosion on Rügen from a neighboring island on 12 October 1944 (p. 4435).

In the file, obtained by the daily newspaper Bild, the task of the academics who prepared the paper between 1944 and 1947 was the “investigations, research, developments and practical use of the German atomic bomb”. The report was prepared by countless American and British intelligence officers and also includes the testimony of four German experts – two chemical physicists, a chemist and a missile expert. It concurs that Hitler’s scientists failed in the quest to achieve a breakthrough in nuclear technology – BUT that a documented test may have taken place of a rudimentary warhead in 1944. The statement of the German test pilot Hans Zinsser in the file is considered evidence: the missile expert says he observed in 1944 a mushroom cloud in the sky during a test flight near Ludwigslust. His log submitted to the Allied investigators reads; “In early October 1944 I flew away 12-15 km from a nuclear test station near Ludwigslust (South of Lübeck). The report was prepared by American and British intelligence officers “A cloud shaped like a mushroom with turbulent, billowing sections(at about 7000 metres) stood, without any seeming connections over the spot where the explosion took place. Strong electrical disturbances and the impossibility to continue radio communication as by lighting turned up.” He estimated the cloud stretching for nine kilometres and described further “strange colourings” followed by a blast wave which translated into a “strong pull on the stick” – meaning his cockpit controls. An hour later a pilot in a different machine took off from Ludwigslust and observed the same phenomenon. According to other archival documents, the Italian correspondent Luigi Romersa observed on the ground the same explosion. He had been sent by dictator Benito Mussolini to watch the test of a “new weapon” of the Germans. He was ordered to report his impressions back to Mussolini. It is known that Hitler pursued the goal of nuclear technology and wanted his V-2 rockets to be able to carry them to destroy the UK. The testimony of the four German scientists in the declassified American report mentions a top secret meeting held in Berlin in 1943 at which armaments minister and Hitler favourite Albert Speer was present for the discussion called a “nuclear summit.” In the end the report states that the Allies believe the Germans fell short of triggering the nuclear chain reaction necessary to trigger a nuclear blast – but none could come up with an explanation for what occurred in the skies over Ludwigslust in 1944.
